Very cute astrophytum asterias I grabbed at a local shop. I love astros; I’ll probably end up with a couple if this one goes well.

When I first started researching how to grow cactus by seed, there were so many complicated directions and I was intimidated

But really all I do is throw them on some soaking wet regular cactus soil, stick it in a plastic bag for humidity, and place them on a seed heating pad. Then I leave an extra aquarium light I had laying around on for 12 hours on and 12 off

It’s worked very well for me so far

Astrophytum ornatum

Astrophytums are very popular with cactus growers, and it is easy to see why. Astrophytum ornatum is the largest species in the group, and the plant pictured is our largest specimen at the Ruth Bancroft Garden. Yellow is the usual flower color in Astrophytum, and A. ornatum starts out yellow on the first day it opens, but then the flowers become pinker on the following days, as is seen here. Astrophytum capricorne was the first cactus I came across at a cactus + succulent store and decided I really wanted one. The combination of curling flexible spines, pattern of fuzzy dots, but most of all the beautifully scented balloon-ribbon flowers enticed me. Native to northern Mexico they start out vaguely spherical but eventually grow into a column from which can simultaneously emerge several of these gorgeous blooms (mine has peaked at 2 now). This is a good example of a plant where the taxonomic name meets the common name! The genus Astrophytum means “star plant” and the specific epithet capricorne means “goat horn,” referring to the curled spines which give the cactus the common name “goat’s horn cactus.” Remarkably, Astrophytum contains just 6 species, all of which are found in Mexico, but only one of which grows native to the U.S. For such a small genus, it is amazing that the last species to be discovered was described in 2002.

Astrophytum ornatum

This is our tallest specimen of Astrophytum ornatum at the Ruth Bancroft Garden, and we like the way the ribs twist as they go up. It repeat blooms multiple times over the summer and into the fall, with showy yellow flowers that become tinged pink as they age. This is the largest-growing species in its genus, and the one that has grown the best for us. From east-central Mexico.
