I can understand where you'd get the idea that There's No Children In Hamelin is a game!! The diorama-style set designs are actually just for my personal reference they're not for exploring in a side-scrolling format.

Ideally the project will be an interactive comic book! Essentially it'll be an art piece/comic narrative with small game-ified sections but not rlly a proper GAME yknow.

🦝 - Do Crimeboys have a toxic Dynamic?

Toxic? No. Unhealthy? Yes.

This is gonna get Long and it still won’t express all my thoughts on crime boys but here we go

It wasn't always unhealthy. The early L'Manberg days, Wilbur was not some master manipulator whatever biased present views might have you think, he was a naïve, cunning, ambitious, passionate, caring idiot who believed what he preached. He kept his own struggling mental health from Tommy as long as he could and I would call that a personal weakness of Wilbur's, not a character flaw that reflects a damaged relationship.

Pogtopia, Wilbur was a dick, not all the time but he was, to everyone and Tommy saw the most of it because he was with Wilbur the most. Wilbur was unfair and he hurt those around him, but if anyone says Wilbur was abusive toward Tommy, even during the Pogtopia era, I will fucking throw hands gladly discuss why that is not the case. Abuse depends on an imbalance of power being deliberately used to cause harm (not to say there can't be harmful relationships where the person causing the harm is ignorant and still at fault, but I wouldn't call that abuse.) that I do not believe was present in the Pogtopia era because not only was Wilbur was incredibly ill at the time, but Tommy had never felt pressured to obey Wilbur's authority. He followed him as a leader but never had any issue disobeying him. (Dueling Dream being a more known example) Wilbur was never a threat to him, only someone he respected. In Pogtopia, Wilbur was not doing well mentally and was even weaker of an authority than what came before, and everything he said to Tommy which might have led Tommy to believe it was just the two of them against the world, they couldn't trust anyone, they had to take drastic violent measures etc, Wilbur believed wholly that was the truth. That was not good for Tommy to hear, but it cannot be called a manipulation if the person saying it believes it.

Additionally, I think we have to shut off certain perceptions we have of how the world works because they cannot translate. Wilbur was not Tommy's guardian. He was not responsible for him and therefore failed to protect him, Tommy had existed on his own well before Wilbur arrived and could live independently. Now, Tommy being put into the position where he had to take care of his big brother was not in any way fair, but it wasn't Wilbur neglecting his duty as a caretaker.

I don't like the term "toxic" relationship. It feels vague and insubstantial. But I tend to consider it more along the lines of a mutually harmful relationship. Schlatt and Quackity's relationship become toxic before turning flat out abusive, because there was a power imbalance.

Wilbur and Tommy's relationship was definitely not one of mutual harm. It was both of them being unequipped to help the other and Wilbur’s instability manifesting in lashing out at others. But it is so clear that it was a reflection of Wilbur being unwell, not of him trying to hurt Tommy to hurt Tommy. “You’re Never going to be president.” That huge moment of Wilbur talking down to Tommy– that was Wilbur’s own projection getting put on Tommy instead. Tommy showed little interest in being president! “I just wanted L’Manberg.”

Pre death, Wilbur hurt everyone he loved because he hated himself. And while he still must bear the burden and responsibility of the harm that caused, it was a side effect of him being very ill and very sad. His death hurt a lot of people as well and he must bear responsibility for the harm it caused. His last acts of destruction of so much, L’Manberg and himself, were cruel, but it was self destruction with collateral. He hurt others to hurt himself, but that doesn’t change that he did hurt them.

Now, post-death. There is a lot going on here. Let’s first talk Tommy’s time spent dead and with Wilbur. The audio we had showed Tommy not having a good time and Wilbur being relatively uncaring, but it is only on Tommy’s revival, him begging Dream not to bring Wilbur back, that indicate something more. My thought is, dead!Wilbur did not think he would ever come back. He could easily exist as the very worst of himself (the version Tommy saw a glimpse of on the 16th) without consequence. He probably did threaten to destroy the server, to hurt people, because for him it didn't matter. Nothing did after all that time alone, and of course that scared Tommy. I do not think during that time Wilbur hurt Tommy, not directly or deliberately beyond the obvious consequences of him threatening a world Tommy hadn't wanted to leave.

Wilbur, revived, however. Wilbur never thought he would live again and I do think his revival was a bit of an epiphany for him. He did not actually want to destroy the server. He probably had few actual plans for if he was alive again because again, he hadn't considered it a possibility. Revivebur is not powerful or a clever manipulator either. He is desperate, fragile, and emotionally weak. Over a decade of isolation has left him even worse at being part of relationships than before. He is utterly dependent on Tommy and Tommy is reluctant to leave him. It’s an off balance codependency where Tommy doesn’t feel like he can leave and Wilbur doesn’t want him to.

They both love each other. Wilbur wants to do better and Tommy wants his brother to be okay. Wilbur is just bad at it. And the tommy that told Pogtopia Wilbur he was being a moron has grown tired. He’s not going to push Wilbur to be better, he’s going to wait and not leave him.

Wilbur said horrible things to tommy regarding Dream because he didn’t know any better. The moment he knew better, everything changed. His efforts to help tommy manifested in selfish ways however good his intentions. It’s been said before, Tommy’s “thank you” at the end of that stream was a dismissal. It was a get out of that conversation sentence because he knows his brother just doesn’t understand Anything he left behind, as he told Wilbur, he was gone for a long time. And tommy survived it. Wilbur never rescued him before and he certainly won’t do it now.

But Wilbur does want to do better. And as Tommy said, he doesn’t believe in second chances, he does believe everyone has some good inside them.

It’s unhealthy, but it isn’t toxic. Wilbur has hurt people but he is not beyond saving. He still owes Tommy that apology.
