Thoughts on TAT

As I get closer and closer to that first day I began hosting TAT over @the-wandering-whumper while archiving the old posts, I’m struck by how much TAT has evolved over the years, and by how much it has stayed the same.  The quality of the content remains the same (astronomical), but I’ve certainly noticed many shifts in the themes of the TAT asks I receive.  Some of the later days seem show more proclivity toward torture and darker themes while my earlier submissions had a lot of tv/movie fandom content.  I find that fascinating and enjoy how TAT gives us a nice long snapshot of the evolution of our community and it’s tastes. 

I know my tastes have certainly changed.  I didn’t always ban underaged whump from TAT, but I didn’t receive many asks about it either. I also gushed over scenarios that reblogging today made me cringe a little, not because they were poorly written, but because the theme would probably be considered “problematic” by today’s standards.  For example, our treatment of mental illness in whump.  I think we’ve come a long way as a community in how we portray mental illness, choosing now to treat it with the respect and caution it deserves.

I’ve gotten a lot of hate over the years, too. Many people have expressed their anger towards my treatment of some themes, underaged whump in particular.  I’ve been told it’s not fair, that I need to step down and let someone else who accepts all types of whump take over.  While I understand where these feelings come from, TAT is not something the community elected me to run.  It’s a labor of love begun by @love-me-a-lotta-whump back in 2017 and which I’ve painstakingly cultivated over the past several years. I suppose what my mama told me is true, not everyone is going to like you, no matter how hard you try. I think I’ve come to accept that with TAT.

I fully intend to keep TAT going for as long as people submit asks.  I’ve had my ups and downs with it, for sure, but it’s always been my rock, my one constant in this ever evolving Whump Tumblrscape. I’ve cursed it, cried over it, gotten discouraged by the hate, thought about throwing in the towel or taking on more help, but in the end, I always realize how much I love running TAT and how much it has enriched my life and brought me closer to all of you. I’m in it for the long haul, and I hope you are too.

If someone were to make you a character/ship/song aesthetic what would you want it to be of?

Uhhhh! So confession, I’m an Old and I had to ask @rainbowstarbird what an aesthetic was so I could answer honestly! Now that I know, I love the idea and am in general far less lost in the tumblrscape haha

If someone were to make me an aesthetic, I would OF COURSE love Erasermight, but with a focus on like ... their teaching together? Like, a soft focus, classic tired (professor) dads. I hope that inspires you hypothetically!
