New Adventurer Portraits Let’s Goooooo!
This is my main, Satou Saothru, my first FFXIV character and the most played, with the perfect green and yellow hair that I remain obsessed with.
Adventurer plate and my warrior images were carried over so they are the same, but all of the new quick portraits are under the cut!

I tried to make dynamic portraits that captured some movement. I’m pleased with how little repetition there was in poses, even with the DoL and DoH sharing some poses with paladins.
I had a lot of fun making these and look forward to seeing other player’s portraits!
#ffxiv#lalafell#I feel like that red mage portrait is one of the best things I've made ever#and just with a set of controlled image pieces xD#astro bard dark knight and red mage are the main classes I play so it is no wonder that I particularly like those portraits#clearly I used the battle stance and victory poses a lot#they have unique animations for disciples of war and magic so there is a lot to work with there#and lalafells have such cute cheer happy and joy animations#of course weaver has to be extra with the drama and suffering#when in general I tried to not overdo it with the backgrounds and borders because I feel like a lot of the options can pull attention away#from the warrior of light themselves#I used different portions of the Bees Knees for the weaver and fashion report sets but they look almost exactly the same >.<#Paladin and goldsmith are the same pose#as are botanist and alchemist#with the different weapons or tools making a difference in how the images look#and again the whole thing with disciples of the hand and land using paladin animations#Paladin and Reaper look similar by coincidence as I pulled the poses from animations unique to each of them#I hope that some of y'all enjoy these#and look forward to seeing other WoL's portraits#satou says

i wonder where the line is in FMA-alchemy before you get sucked into the portal of truth for your transgressions?
Like, clearly Human Transmutation is a no-no. Can’t bring back a dead person without Truth showing up and laughing in your face.
Now, I imagine the same would be true for any kind of life - I don’t imagine you could bring an animal or even a plant back to life, if only because that goes against the One is All, All is One concept.
But I wonder if it would just fail outright, or if it would fail in the same way? All the chimeras and other biological alchemy shown in the series were only performed with living ingredients, after all. There’s no way to know what would happen if someone tried to bring a tree back to life, or if they decided to test human transmutation theories by starting with rat experimentation...

realistically eyrie would only be a leatherworker and an alchemist, but the sirensong of having all the crafters is Very Tempting
#i say that as I have almost all of them save for armorer#and I’m a crafting mentor Sndjdjdjd#eyrie is an alchemist in the more medicinal sense—same with them being a botanist#it’s all basic medical knowledge#as much as there is a strong tradition of something akin to white magic on their mother’s side of the family#they were given a full education on practical ways of caring for injuries of the flesh#it was practical! one cannot rely only on healing spells to save oneself#I’ve been thinking a lot about eyrie’s home lately#living life skirting the tree lines of the skatay range. the winters and the summers there#the vicious winter windstorms up on the mountains where the tents would howl for hours#or the one time in their youth they were awoken by a terrible rumbling sound and watched in horror as an avalanche rushed down#the distant hill—crushing everything in its path by moonlight#even in their adulthood their patrols through the edges of the trees and further up#across glaciers and standing at mountain peaks with the clouds like an ocean all around#I think eyrie’s tribe kept sheep—Hardy mountain ones#oc: eyrie kisne#hot springs! eyrie on the edge of a hot spring in the middle of winter tending to their wounds from a recent fight#messy long hair and permenant sour face#it says something about them that they spent the better part of their life#in some of the quietest places on the star#wide scrub tundra with naught but the sound of one’s own breath and the wind#the stillness at sunrise and sunset#with the snow bright orange in the light#Minfilia talked about the dawn’s light and eyrie always pictured those mornings#and they thought about all these different places and the metaphor of it#and it didn’t stick until they thought about those#brilliant orange mornings at the top of the world#that made it make sense

Oh that's very interesting.
Also something Liios most certainly had researched in, but his were 99% in creating independent, fully-functional biomes because HIS degree was in environmental aetherology and mechanical engineering.
He stopped doing any more research on it that was submitted back to Old Sharlayan about 20-30 years ago though, because he resented the decision surrounding the Exodus. But his researches earlier than that, that would've made him Archon if he hadn't had "behavioral problems", served as some of the principles modern-day Labyrinthos and the Ragnarok built off of.

The "potion-crafter" archetype of alchemist used in fantasy is often, like, an independent chemist that works off commission or sales to create fireball elixirs or exorcism salves. Is there a grain of truth, there? Did alchemists in any period you studied make a living by synthesizing magical items (like panaceas or DIY-chrysopoeia-kits or somesuch) and selling them on to any willing customer, or was that not really in their domain?
Ha! You know sometimes it can be a bit annoying answering asks like this, because most fantasy media isn t terribly interested in authentically representing history, BUT THIS TIME I can give y'all a specific and direct answer!
The archetype of the potion-crafter you're talking about almost definitely has its roots in an actual pre-paracelcian european medical profession; the Apothecary.
There were three types of doctors in the 1500s. There were diagnosticians, the people who went to school to learn about anatomy, and were allowed to call themselves "doctor." There were surgeons, the low-skilled workers who were in charge of hacking off limbs and draining bedpans. And there were apothecaries, basically the medieval equivalent of a pharmacist.
If you were a wealthy merchant, and you went to a doctor for your runny nose, he would look you over, and give you a prescription that you were supposed to take down to your local apothecary, so you could buy a potion from them.
But these prescriptions weren't exactly strict. A doctor might prescribe you an exact list of ingredients with the amounts, or he might just prescribe you "a healing ungent of cooling and drying herbs." So the apothecaries occasionally had some wiggle room based on supplies and expertise.
The important thing to remember, is that apothecaries were NOT considered magicians or alchemists.
That is, until Paracelsus came along.
See, good ol' Paracelsus was a radical innovator. He was one of the first physicians in history to be all three types of doctor at once. He was a diagnostician, a surgeon, and an apothecary. He argued that all doctors should have knowledge of their entire profession, and that no doctor was above suturing their patients wounds, and mixing their patients medicines.
He was also, crucially, an alchemist and a magician.
Alchemy was the cutting edge of technology for the time, a practice regarded with equal parts awe and suspicion, but it was more the realm of glassblowers and metallurgists than doctors or botanists. Paracelsus disagreed. He argued that if it's part of God's creation, it should be used to heal the human body.
This extended to magic. Paracelsus figured that you had to factor in things like "the movement of the planets and their influence on the earth." And he was known for prescribing patients things like "astral talismans to be worn about the neck." A practice that, even for his time, was often seen as backwards and superstitious. (Although given how harmful medieval medicine was, the astral talismans might have been your best option sometimes.)
Paracelsus was a radical. People fucking hated him, especially when he was alive. But his ideas were extremely influential, and exploded in popularity after his death in 1541. I can confidently say that the fantasy archetype of the Potion Brewer is based on Paracelcian physicians, the doctor/alchemist/apothecary/magicians who followed his theories.

so, as many may have noticed, our two favorite queers have been in the habit of showing off the flowers they really like. most significantly, we have louis putting flowers on his chest with his very own fashion line, 28 programme, and harry wearing a pair of coats in the late night talking mv where the boutonnières almost cover their entire fronts. this is - obviously - not random, but it really holds more significance than i even realised at first glance.

prince albert supposedly started the modern trend of the lapel flower, after queen victoria offered him flowers on their first wedding anniversary, which he subsequently put on display in his jacket. since there were photos made of the event, which was a rarity back then, the gesture spread as a trend
from then on, and especially through the years, it was a sign of a dressed-up gent. formal, masculine, and a show of love - wiki: symbol of good breeding, elegance, and sophistication
green carnation, oscar wilde:

AND THEN WE COMBINE WHAT WE HAVE LEARNED
louis came on stage at the afhf last summer with a custom-made jersey, designed by the man himself, which was pretty much covered in flowers. a flower on his right pec, a bouquet on his left.

NOW what’s super interesting here, is that louis is channelling the origins of the boutonnière with the abstract flower symbol he’s adopted as the 28 official programme logo!! it’s a yorkshire rose, the emblem of his home county. AND THEN on the OTHER SIDE he’s got ROSES, a whole bouquet of them, a universal symbol of romance, as well as that of a gay man. with the added fuck-me-up detail that the fabric of the jersey is green, the typical color of a certain someone we know, making the flowers green. just like the green coronation. ok. ok.
then we have harry, who has used lilies before, in the photo shoot for the fine line cover art and booklet, where it was used to symbolise rebirth and femininity. now, in the late night talking mv, he wore the lilies on his chest, first in the museum scene, which flows into the date scene, as well as at the end, where he officiates a wedding and then falls from the sky.
it’s completely meant to fit into the tradition of the boutonnière. harry is conveying the message: i am queer, and i am wearing it proudly on my chest. it’s not subtle, is it? it’s meant as a clear symbol for those who understand, just like oscar wilde and his friends wore the green carnation. it’s so beautiful that it’s the lily on his chest, causing the flower to be a theme in his art, of rebirth and femininity.
when you look at when exactly harry is wearing the boutonnières in the mv, it’s just...?? in the museum, he’s the art exhibit. he’s wearing the lilies openly on his chest. then, he’s on a private date with a man. his napkin is even pushed to the side a little to show off the flowers in full. then, when he’s officiating a queer wedding, he’s wearing them, and then he seems to be shot from the sky by lightning, and he’s falling through the sky on his bed. WHAT DOES IT MEAN? harry’s gayness, or the way he’s shown it with messages, isn’t hidden. irl he walks around with a pride enamel pin. he’s being scrutinised, studied, and he’s still not hiding it. then he’s in private, celebrating love, and he shows it, loud and proud. it reminds me of how harry’s stated in the past that he has shown us who he is. that he’s said it in enough ways. he hides in plain sight, just like oscar wilde and his entourage. general society knew what the green flower meant, but it remained something unspoken. now, any casual observer could see that harry is at least not straight. and yet, still, you are deemed straight until stated otherwise.
so what does one do, when one can’t say it out loud? a bit of queer signalling. with flowers.

disclaimer: this spawned off a twitter thread i made a while back, which itself came from something i’d noticed time and again within the xiv community: the idea that photography isn’t possible there. i’ve seen this a few times, and ultimately what i felt to be the truer statement is that digital photography as we know it in our phones, no. that is not a very accessible thing. most eorzeans aren’t getting a garland ironworks tomephone.
but that doesn’t mean they aren’t taking pictures.
A Case for Eorzean Photography
In the case of our modern world, the art of capturing an image onto paper directly from life dates back to the 1820s. It was called heliography. A wikipedia article on it can be found here. Heliography came about because its inventor wished for an efficient way to reproduce lithographs, engravings, and relief prints, three different illustration styles that had existed by now for varying lengths of time, but all still in use and being the choice method for adding images to text. I’m going to give a short bit of information on each style, because they are also very likely quite prevalent.
Woodcut (Relief)
Woodcut is as its name implies -- you carve your image into a block of wood, coat the raised portions with ink, and then use it in the press. Accessible to learn, accessible to do, if you want rp flavor there’s likely illustrators in every city-state employing this for the newspapers or illustrated editions of books.
Intaglio (Engraving)
Intaglio is my favorite printmaking method for illustrations, and probably also my favorite for FF14 because it involves playing with chemicals! Let’s get the alchemist roleplayers we know something cool to do. Anyway, with intaglio you’re using acid to burn an image into a metal plate, and the deeper the etchings the darker the shadows. Great for values, great for depth, and have I mentioned you’re just being a little scientist and an artist at the same time?
Lithography
Lithography is the one you’ve seen the most, even if you aren’t 100% sure how it works. It became very popular in the late 19th and early 20th century -- if you’ve ever gawked at vintage illustrations by Mucha or Leyendecker, those are lithographs! Some of the big plates used for them are just big rocks! Miners could 100% mine up limestone slabs for this.
Anyway, back to photographs. After heliographs cracked the capture nut suddenly everyone was getting in on it. People were mixing all kinds of chemicals to capture the world as it was at a moment onto a plate of glass (or others! they liked silver too).
Physautotypes used lavender oil as its photosensitive agent. Tree resin was also popular. Both things botanists would routinely be able to harvest and crafters able to distill. I can only imagine how it smelled to make photographs with this, I hope it was nice!
About 20 years after the earliest heliograph came daguerrotypes. Made on silver plates with a copper substrate, daguerrotypes were pricy but popular -- and they had their own special camera made rather than using a camera obscura.
Daguerrotypes were also when spirit photography came into prominence.

Ambrotypes came on the heels of daguerrotypes as a cheaper alternative made with less costly materials, and was followed by their even cheaper brethren the tintypes. Bit by bit, photographs were becoming more accessible -- not always the equipment (or the supplies), but in terms of a person or group of people having a portrait made you were starting to see that become more common.

Let it be said also that less costly materials does not mean lower quality image -- each method had its own charm. Tintypes were sturdier than ambrotypes, but both developed quicker than daguerrotypes. Ambrotypes could also have spot colors added to them!
Albumen prints made it to paper, and until we went digital that’s where photographs stayed, on paper! And one of their key binding materials was made from eggs, beautifully common eggs.
So Where Does This Leave Eorzea?
So why did I go into this much detail, with visual examples and links to references that include their materials? Because all these materials exist already within FFXIV. Glass, plates, the types of metals used, the types of chemicals.
They’re part of crafting logs, and gathering leves, and dungeon drops. Alchemists can make these chemical components, goldsmith quests have you making lenses and other more delicate mechanisms, carpenters could easily build boxes for camera obscura (and cameras!).
Different styles of photography and different materials used for them reflect availability of the materials -- where does this character live, what are their cultural beliefs, do they travel much outside of their home region? How much money do they have?
What if using unaspected crystals creates a different effect on the plate? With the right kind of aetherial charge, don’t you think you could photograph ghosts in actuality rather than trickery? There’s a whole quest in 1.0 where an NPC sees the ghost of the city of Sil’dih -- a ghost city!
At any rate, I just think it’s neat to look at what materials exist in this game, and how things from this world may translate to that with the understanding it will not be 21st century. We have a lot of technology that’s existed longer than we sometimes recall or acknowledge -- and it’s good material! Use that stuff! Have fun with it!

oml im obsessed with Wolsey n Warwick!!!!!!! could we see how they looked as kids.....?
im very glad that u like em!! tho they looked muuuch different when they were younger lol
they actually had sort of a, career swap once they reached adulthood!
firstly, Wolsey was sort of desperate to experience the outside world like everyone else did, so they began searching in the constant for a way out. though as they explored the constant more and more they have fallen in love with its uniqueness and decided to become an alchemist instead and find whatever other secrets the constant was hiding.
When it comes to Warwick tho. They had always been just as annoying as they are now, they were just simply...lazy. In their youth they were a botanist, believing that if their father had created something, it must be great, but eventually Warwick grew bored and began yearning for something unique, so they started to go on adventures, hoping to find some clarity that their sibling had found, just to find out that theyre a real adrenaline junkie and a kleptomaniac, now its them thats searching for a way to get out of the constant lol. Also, they inherited Maxwells poor eye-sight, but they stopped wearing glasses after they kept breaking on adventures.
tho, both of them had ALWAYS been spoiled brats. They got in trouble all the fucking time with little to none consequences so they both had picked up from their parents on how to be annoying and sarcastic, they also both have high standards for......everything, gifts, clothes, food...ok Wolsey isnt too picky about food,they have PICA and often munch on sticks and rocks
