I’m on my The X-Files season 8 rewatch (I only have interest in season 8 & 9) and while watching Medusa I saw a familiar face. It’s Dr. Kelso from Scrubs!

Fannish Year Review - 2023
1. Your main fandom of the year: TXF always. Although I’ve taken a break from actually watching the show since I finished my rewatch and I’m at a low eb of reading fanfic, tumblr keeps my fandom needs fed. It’s the show I think about every single day whether I’m actively watching or not.
2. Your favorite film this year: If we’re talking new films then Barbie and Are You There God, It’s Me Margaret were my favorite ones I saw in theaters. Barbie was just such a delight and fun theater going experience. Are You There God was such a sweet, well done adaptation.
3. Your favorite book this year: Again, if we’re talking new (to me) books then Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin. I’ve never really had much interest in video games so I was surprised how much it sucked me in. Plus I read it on vacation in Puerto Rico so extra points for the experience of reading under an umbrella on a beautiful beach eating ice cream out of a pineapple.
4. Your favorite album or song this year: I just looked on Spotify and I don’t think I downloaded a new album or created a new playlist this year 🙈
5. Your favorite tv shows this year: The third season of Happy Valley - all the time and history that can make a conversation between family members the most nail biting, tension filled, heartbreaking scenes. Reservation Dogs - I caught up just in time for the final season and I’m so glad I finally watched it. I watched some old shows too that I missed for whatever reason and we’re the perfect evening soaps to put on when I needed a break after work - Felicity, Switched at Birth.
6. Your favorite tumblr community this year: I don’t really interact with anyone outside of txf community lol
7. Your best new fandom discovery of the year: I started watch Doctor Who and caught up with Ten in time for the specials - Ten and Donna are definitely my favorite duo so far so it was just delightful and I don’t have any of the long term investment that makes an event like that angst filled for those truly in the fandom.
8. Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year: txf fandom has definitely slowed down, but I’m in a lull too so can’t say I’m surprised.
9. Your tv/movie boyfriend and/or girlfriend of the year: Mulder/Scully - what can I say, I’m consistent
10. Your biggest squeeze moment of the year: Fanfic writers coming back to finish or continue old fics: Petrichor sequel Singing of Mount Abora by @aloysiavirgata and the final chapter of throat eye and knucklebone finished five!! years later by audries.
Thanks @amplifyme this was fun

🥏 TXF Fic Rec #17: "When the Ink Dries" by somekindofseizure
Today’s fic is something on a different level: gorgeous, sexy, and decadent. It was a wild ride and it blew me away.
It’s a crossover fic with the 2010s crime series The Fall in which Gillian Anderson starred as Detective Stella Gibson (you don’t need to watch that show to appreciate this fic).
I love post–“Never Again” stories. No fic explores the tension and hurt boiling under the lid, and the themes raised in that episode more thoroughly and better than this one. It’s a novel-length post-ep in which Ed Jerse’s case is never far from the emotional center.
@somekindofseizure’s exquisite prose and characterization are among the finest in the fandom. I found myself rereading every three sentences as I couldn’t believe how awesome the writing was.
On top of that, mix in Stella, a force of her own, forming an intriguing three-way relationship with our duo. Tons of UST, angst, and one of the hottest sex scenes ever. The first three chapters are a work of art, giving you the magical buzz that only top-quality narrative can deliver.
The first nine chapters are a self-contained story that starts after “Never Again” and concludes with M/S RST. The rest is set years later with a depressed Mulder and William-induced angst. I prefer the first part. It’s among my favorites and one of the masterpieces you cannot miss.

Hello! May I enquire after an X files episode? Like. Least scary/most fun. The tribbles episode of you will. If it exists? (There’s always one). I’m hoping to fall in love with characters in a lower stress mode for myself so then I will follow them into the pit of despair or sit in the creepy haunted mansion with them. Alternatively what is your absolute favorite?
oh!!! Magpie dearest!!! ok I'm going to give several answers, actually. TXF has a solid break-up of Mytharc episodes (overarching series plotline), Monster Of The Week Episodes (can range from light and fluffy to deep dives into the darkest recesses of the characters), and deliberately comedic episodes, so there's quite a lot of variety to choose from
I'd say that if you want a "Tribbles episode," I think Humbug (s2e20, this is Gurt's favorite comedy episode) or War of the Coprophages (s3e12, MY favorite, and one of my top 10 episodes overall) would be a good one. neither requires a lot of context for plot or characters, as they're intentionally written as a sort of break from the overall plot and emotional impact of the season. they're both very chill episodes, low-stress high-fun — however if you have a squick for bugs, War of the Coprophages may not be the best one for you lol. the premise is that people in a small town believe that cockroaches are attacking and killing them, and there's a couple scenes where that's exactly what it looks like, so fair warning. (WotC also has one of the best Mulder-Scully dynamics there is, because they just seem incredibly domestic and married the entire time)
however, if I had to pitch the series to you in one episode — apart from the Pilot, of course — it would be s5e18, The Pine Bluff Variant. it is a pretty tense episode, with undercover operations and some pretty dark imagery (the props department on TXF always loves to go full ham on icky things, but since it was the 90s it does seem a tad campy tbh), but it really encapsulates what the show is and who the characters are so perfectly in one episode. it's also one of the few episodes that doesn't deal with any kind of extraterrestrial or paranormal subjects, just simple human nature — to boil it down to its basis, it is an episode wholly about Good vs. Evil and what each of those things brings about. I've written a lot about it because it's both my favorite episode and the one that I think sums up the entirety of the show best.
and if you decide you want to actually start watching it, but not like... fully commit, the first four episodes of season 1 (Pilot, Deep Throat, Squeeze, and Conduit) are the true essentials and really do a great job of setting up a foundation of who Scully and Mulder are, individually, and what they're going to be as a duo. the first season is a lot more in the horror aspect of sci-fi horror, but it's also in a lot of ways the least intense season. I tend to think of it as "comfort horror," tbh, because while the vibes are darker than much that follows, it's also the season with (naturally) the last baggage on the characters and storylines, so it feels lighter at the same time.
I can give you a more comprehensive bare minimum viewing list if you want, but for now I would just say that Humbug or War of the Coprophages are good tribble episodes (keeping in mind the bug thing, but WotC is actually the episode I prefer 😅 Humbug kinda bores me bc the character dynamics are a bit flat imo) and Pine Bluff Variant is my favorite and my "sell someone on this show in one(1) episode" episode, so I hope that helps!! lemme know what you think!!!

Reader Appreciation, MEET KARRA!
Tumblr media
What are your favorite types of XF fanfictions? Any favorite tropes or anything?
K: Definitely case files with romantic elements. Much like the show, I enjoy reading about Mulder and Scully working a case and investigating the unexplained. I love added romance because they deserve it. Of course, just plain fluffy romance is high on my list as well.
As far as tropes go, I’m a sucker for the one bed trope where only one hotel room is available or something happens to one of their rooms (re: The Rain King). I’d also consider “All Things” fics to be a trope in the XF fandom. I’m glad we don’t seem to have a shortage of stories centered around this episode because I never get tired of reading them.
What got you into TXF fanfiction? Do you remember your first one or your introduction?
K: I’m not sure what exactly started my love of fanfiction. I think it was the result of starting to post about my love for the show on twitter and I saw others talking about it, so I decided to browse. What I can tell you is I spent my fair share of time bookmarking almost every story from each archive.
I do remember the first story I ever read because I still reread it occasionally and consider it one of my favorites. It’s called “Snowed In” by Barbarian Librarian on fanfiction.net.

Can you recommend three (3) of your favorite X-Files fanfictions and describe why you like them?
1.Wounded Heart by Sherry Davis. My all-time favorite. No question. Our favorite duo investigate a body found in his home town and it may or may not connect to Samantha. This is a heartbreaking read but I feel like it tackles the subject in such a powerful way. Both characters were written very well (in my opinion), and Scully’s caring side was at the forefront. It gets a bit dark in places and it’s definitely AU. But trust me, it’s essential if you enjoy angst and romance. The MSR was beautiful.
Wounded Heart Link Here
2. The Eyes of a Child by Lovesfox. My second favorite of all-time. As a fan of (happy) baby fics taking place during or after S8, this one has always stood out to me. In this one, Mulder returns but he’s not quite the same for the first half or so but it has a wonderfully happy ending. I really enjoyed the different angle this author took with a “Mulder return” story.
The Eyes of a Child Link Here
3. Desideratum by Rachel Anton and Laura Blaurosen. This is one giant angst fest from start to finish. I’ve always loved it because Mulder would do anything for Scully and loosing her would ruin him. These two authors pulled me in with the emotion shown throughout. It’s very dark but as with all my recommendations, it has a happy ending.
Desideratum Link Here
What would your dream fic be?
K: My dream fic is essentially what I described in the question regarding my favorite types of XF fanfic. I crave angst filled x files. I generally enjoy stories where Mulder and Scully are personally affected in some way. The stakes are always that much higher and it draws me in. Throw in a healthy dose of romance and some good smut, then I’ll be all in.

AND she has an Ao3 account where she’s posted one fic and plans on posting some more soon! FoxyFoxMulder (Ao3)

11x01 My Struggle III
The one where... the previous finale was all a vision sent to Scully from William, and CSM makes BS claims about William to Skinner.
Tagline: I Want to ..LIE..
Best: -
Worst: I’ve been putting off rewatching this episode for (checks watch) 4 years because the first time I saw it I found it to be:
A. a terribly written, boring episode to watch - is this an episode of txf or a car commercial?;
B. full of CC’s worst mytharc exposition monologing impulses;
C. frustrating because after 2 years of waiting to see how they would resolve the cliffhanger from the season 10 finale instead everything’s wiped away so that we can go back to the case of the week status quo; and
D. viscerally upsetting - this episode of my favorite show made me feel BAD. I can count on one hand the times I’ve been this emotionally disturbed by a piece of media. Yes, after 20 years I am overly emotional invested in this fictional universe and particularly in these characters, but this isn’t something that should be treated as a cool plot twist, especially when Scully’s bodily autonomy and relationship to motherhood is handled as badly as it has been on this show.
I powered through this rewatch - see below for a more detailed list of things I hated! - and I’m never watching this awful episode again.

MSR: 🐝🐝🐝
Goriness: 👽👽👽
Creepiness: 👽
Humor: 👽
Rewatch Thoughts:
William check-in: Look, CSM’s a known lier, Mulder is William’s father. Here are my En Ami thoughts and my pregnancy timeline thoughts. Any other explanation’s bad for my mental health, so that’s what I’m sticking with. Besides, see the tagline.
Break-up check-in: Everyone treats them like significant others, they treat each other that way, I guess that’s that?
Things I hate:
1. This time we get CSM’s struggle 🤢 - why is CC so obsessed with him
2. The frantic cutting and editing
3. That I’m not immune to Mulder and Scully’s close talking, even when what they’re saying is absolute nonsense
4. That we’re still doing the Monica Reyes character assassination from MSII
5. The Mulder voiceover - I don’t think we’ve ever gotten internal monologue voiceover like this before and it doesn’t feel right
6. The car chases - WTF is this
7. It was Jeffrey Spender that arranged William’s adoption??? Is that a retcon? Why would Scully have trusted him with that even if she did believe that what he did to the baby in the episode William took away his alien abilities (which it clearly didn’t, at least not permanently). I start think about any of this and immediately spiral into WTF are we doing here 😫
8. CSM and Reyes discussing plot holes 🙄
9. “your desk” 😑
10. Driving, driving, driving
11. Scully, a Medical Doctor - as she reminds us so often - signing herself out of the hospital AMA after a seizure, suffering another one, then getting in the car and causing an accident that could have killed her or someone else!! She’s clearly not in her right mind but this just doesn’t feel in character to me.
12. Hand waving away the alien invasion, I guess because we’ve destroyed the planet in last 20 years and they don’t want it any more?
13. This new duo’s plan. CSM won’t expect Mulder? The man who’s shoved his gun in his face countless times and demanded the truth? I mean, Mulder’s never pulled the trigger so I guess he wouldn’t expect him to actually kill him (if anyone can - remember when CSM’s face exploded, I do!)
14. More driving!!
15. Seeing Scully brutally attacked and fighting for her life - again
16. That I find Mulder slitting a man’s throat to save Scully in any way hot
17. Wait, who sent the assassin and why? Eh, who cares
18. That we’re going back to the distrusting Skinner well yet again
19. Mulder and Skinner’s stupid little fight - you’re grown men, use your words!
20. I already disliked the episode En Ami… but to imply via flashback 18 years later that our protagonist was - unbeknownst to her or the viewers - either raped or medically raped… The ending to this episode is upsetting on so many levels.
21. The term impregnated her with science WTF
22. I…
Things I don’t hate:
1. Mulder’s silver stubble
2. Mulder telling Skinner that where he’s needed is at Scully’s bedside
3. Scully: You need him, and I need you. She hasn’t looked for William for all these years for his own protection, however much that must have hurt her, but for Mulder she’ll do it.
4. The thigh grasp handhold
5. Again, Mulder looks fucking hot - just watch a couple gifs and skip this absolutely garbage episode
