tom's straightguysona was constructed by looking to the emphasis of exclusive heterosexuality without necessarily macho masculinity in 40s-modern middle america as well as academia, particularly the excusable effeminacy granted to men in the upper classes due to it simply being a mark of man being civilized, which is perfectly fine so long as you openly lament the loss of true masculinity. and greg's straightguysona was constructed by listening to weezer in middle and high school

#tom wambsgans #greg hirsch #tomgreg #do NOT take this as an admonishment of weezer either they're def one of my fav bands #i just think that greg has lowkey weezer masculinity whenever he does attempt to perform it #like i imagine him languishing over pink triangle in hs as an excuse for having no gf #like 'oh what a tragedy every girl i like is a lesbian'#and then later he realizes that he was purposefully having crushes on unattainable girls bc it was safe #anyway back to tom. i've been reading this book called Gay New York and it's gay history from 1890 to 1940 #and it's got a lot of insights on how homosexuality and gender were constructed specifically through class #and how that intersects #fun example is that middle class men - as opposed to working and high class men - are the least likely to tolerate homosexuality #BUT middle class men who ARE gay are more likely than working and high class gays to be versatile #like both in the sense of top and bottom and also in just accepting both the masculine and feminine in yourself rather than going hard in #either direction #mine #gay tom #gay greg
