So the thing about dair for me is that they literally can't stop arguing and never see eye to eye on anything at all. And I know Tumblr loves those couples who bicker nonstop, but those kind of ships annoy the hell out of me while showing that the two people involved are just not compatible. Chuck and Blair, for all their many flaws, don't actually bicker nonstop---they connect, they communicate, they understand each other. Dair barely even LIKES each other!

hi!! sorry it took me so long to answer this but after seeing a v hateful ask in my inbox answering this feels much needed so ty 🫶🏻🫶🏻 exactly!! at the risk of angering ppl further (again if u don't like chair pls leave my blog idk what else to tell u) for all their supposed similar interests they only seem to argue about them which shows they might have broadly similar interests but when u get into the specifics they're the complete opposite, which is a reason why they don't work romantically as it's not sustainable. chuck and blair however genuinely have things in common, and like u said they don't really bicker when they date (or when they're apart either, showing their true connection) and instead just enjoy each others' company. they know the other is on the same page so they can just be themselves and not worry about judgement or an argument breaking out, and in turn that makes them stronger and actually healthier. ur so right by saying dair barely like each other, bc dan likes the version of blair he's invented and when u look at how blair interacts and engages with him it's not loving or even vaguely romantic at all. they argue bc that's really all they can do, but it's not banter or playful bickering it's 2 characters who aren't suited for each other trying to be something they're not meant to be

I'm writing a gossip girl overhaul from pilot onward that I'm planning to turn into a book (meaning I've changed interests, physical features, and some personality traits).

GG Season 3 writers after throwing their brains in a blender: So Blair forcing herself to have sex with a man twice her age who has full control of the only thing her boyfriend still has left (and the prospect of losing has caused him to lash out at her and become deeply bitter and miserable about) is TOTALLY as bad as Chuck intentionally putting her in that position without her permission in the first place!! Blair is a terrible person for considering it and she deserves to be with Chuck because they’re as bad as each other and therefore the perfect couple!! How dare she want better for herself instead of instantly forgiving Chuck, now he has to go have sex with a bunch of random women (including on the literal same day they broke up) because she’s so mean :(

something I find really interesting is that a lot of anti-chair fics portray chuck as going away on business trips all the time and not spending time with blair or his family. I think canonically in the show he goes away once (and that's to see jack iirc) he barely leaves the empire to run bass industries, let alone the country. now bart was well established to frequently leave on business trips, but chuck pointedly wasn't. it's obvious that he doesn't want to be like his father, as shown throughout and especially with regards to his family. funnily enough if either of them were more likely to be away on business more it would probably be blair, given that waldorf designs has some kind of office in paris that eleanor regularly worked from. the fact that in order to paint blair as some kind of lonely wife (with her own multi-million dollar business to run mind you) who, presumably, needs to turn to dan for companionship and romance once again (never mind that she would canonically rather be alone than with him) they have to just... make something up that's never happened or been implied to happen (both chuck and blair could be suggested to be workaholics, blair probably moreso, as they do spend a lot of time working on their respective businesses but they also have thriving social lives so they clearly don't work that much) shows that it doesn't fit with anyone's characterisation

Ppl like Maddy bc she’s confident and hot. It’s not that deep.

From I’ve seen this is true. In most of the fan videos Maddy is hot or repeatedly saying c*nt. She’s a total mean girl and is loved for it. I don’t get the appeal of her character. She doesn’t really do anything that indicates she’s a good person or a caring friend. Her confidence comes off as obnoxiousness half the time. Alexa is given meatier storylines than other characters but they are underwhelming due her performance. I don’t like Blair because she’s a mean girl but I think Leighton elevated her character by giving her vulnerability.

A confident character I do like is Brooke Davis from One Tree Hill. In the beginning of the series she’s insecure and seeks validation from men. However, by the end of the series she’s a confident young woman who has her own fashion label. Even when she’s instigator (S1) we see her dynamic with other characters, we see her being a caring and loyal friend.

In season 1 yes, Maddy doesn't have much depth but we do briefly see her being a good friend to Cassie after that caroussel scene. In season 2 however she has time away from Nate so she gets more development and we do see a sweeter side to her when she was giving advice to Kat, hugged Rue and was a pretty sweet babysitter to Theo.

Blair on the other hand was a great character in season 1 however, in season 2 onwards I feel like the writers just took out her dark schemey mean side and made that almost her entire personality. It got really annoying at times especially in that Fashion week episode and the whole Yale thing. It was when her relationship and friendship with Dan developed that we say her softer and nicer side again. She was so much calmer and happier and more mature as opposed to how insecure she was always with Chuck. Just like Maddy, she is a much better person when she's away from her abuser.

From what I've seen on OTH I absolutely adore Brooke even though I have only seen the first season, she's still the best girl. However I would compare her to Cassie more than Maddy.
