Longhorn with a Wolverine Heart

I enjoyed watching Michigan annihilate Ohio State on Saturday. Growing up not far from Ann Arbor & literally cutting my teeth as a Michigan fan during the Bo Schembechler years will instill a deep seeded loathing for all things Ohio State & a love for the yearly battle on the gridiron, football’s greatest rivalry.

I’ll confess that when I attended UT Austin, I found it difficult to share in school spirit over Longhorn football. My Wolverine fan DNA was forged deep in my youth. Other things bothered me, too. Watching games, early in the season, with temps in the 90s wasn’t very football or autumn-like. I thought Memorial Stadium was a laugh compared to the Big House. Maize and Blue, those are football colors. Burnt Orange, not so much. Then there are the UT rivalries. The Sooners and “The Red River Shootout” as it used to be called didn’t stir my blood like “The Game.” And the Aggies, don’t get me started. I just always thought they were a bunch of goofenheimers and their insistent calling us “TU,” like they’re THE University of Texas? Please. That’s hilarious.

Being a Longhorn with a Wolverine heart is not easy. Yes, I rooted for Vince Young & the Longhorns in the stunning 2005 Rose Bowl victory over Michigan. I truly felt guilty though like I was doing something wrong.

Austin was home for 22 years and that town revolves around politics, music and UT football. I just was never that fired up about It. I am proud of my education. Don’t get me wrong. Four in my family have graduated from UT Austin, soon to be five in fact.

The day came when Anne and I packed up and left the UT kingdom for a new life in Oregon. If having a Wolverine heart was difficult in Austin, being in Portland was more challenging, a grueling nine year exercise in holding my tongue. How do I feel about the Ducks? I’ve kept my opinion to myself for this long. Why ruin a good thing?

Being back home is a relief. I don’t have to pretend anymore and I feel strangely blissful in unanticipated ways such as when I hear people talking about Michigan sports and I feel connected to them, to my home state and my past. Also just being back where we have a proper autumn, the best backdrop for enjoying football, which makes everything seem more visceral.

Watching this regular, undefeated season has been sublime, and the thorough crushing of the Buckeyes was the icing on the cake. GO BLUE!
