[If we were villains][M. L. Rio]
Quando gli amici diventano nemici, non c'è limite al male che possono farci. If we were villains (Non è colpa della luna) di M. L. Rio

Dry point printing
Tumblr media
Dry point printing is printing which is done on a plastic plate to which you use a long metal pencil with a pointed end or some kind of carving tool to scrape and scratch into it leaving the indents for your print.
This way of printing is able to make very detailed prints and the ghost prints and reversed/ inverted pieces of these types of prints always look really effective.
I have tried dry point before, and I actually really liked how detailed you could get with it and how you could almost use your tool as a pencil and be able to “shade” with it etc. The only thing I didn’t like about this type of printing is the sound of the scraping of the tools for ages as you scratch in your piece.

Drypoint Experimenting
After experimenting with lino I decided I also wanted to experiment with dry point, a technique I explored in one of the previous projects, Cinematographer.
What is drypoint?
Drypoint is a printing technique where a design is engraved into a plate and with a sharp tool. Unlike lino where the spaces you cut are left blank, the lines engraved into the plate are the parts that fill with ink, which is easier to understand in my opinion, as it is basically the same as drawing with a pen. It is called drypoint because the process doesn’t use ink until you print, unlike monoprinting for example.
Before I started creating designs and engraving I looked at a few different artists to get inspiration and see how different people use this technique:

ANGIE HOFFMEISTER
Angie is a freelance artist and illustrator from Düsseldorf, Germany. Her drypoint artworks are quite hallucinatory and experimental, using a double vision technique, and also has quite melancholic themes. I really like the linework and how much detail she uses while still being stylistic and sketchy.
Characteristics:
• Monochrome
• Sketchy
• Expressive

SHANA JAMES
Shana James is an Australian that teaches drawing, painting and printmaking. The artworks I looked at were a series of drypoint illustrations inspired by a musical collaboration called Conversations with Ghosts. I liked how her pictures tell a story, and how she uses blue ink instead of black ink which I think gives it a softer effect. I also think this is relevant because she took something that inspired and influenced her and created a series of outcomes inspired by that, which is relevant to the aim of my project.
Characteristics:
•
I also looked at Sophie Lecuyer who I looked at in my linocut workshop here
After looking at these artists I started by drawing some ideas and gathering some imagery I could trace over like I did in the Cinematographer project.

Angie Hoffmeister is a German artist who is a freelance illustrator who lives in Duesseldorf, Germany. She uses a wide variety of mediums including watercolours, pencils, graphite, markers, acrylics and oil paints. She also makes etchings and ink drawings. Angie draws from her experience in arts school and is inspired by the city she lives in.
These stunning drypoint prints by Angie Hoffmeister make such intriguing imagery. Drypoint is a printmaking technique in the intaglio family where images are etched onto a plate using a sharp metal point.
Tumblr media
When looking at her prints this one caught my eye because of the fine detail that has gone into around the eyes. This image really messes with my eyes because the multiple eyes are confusing but at the same time you get drawn into them. This is a really good idea and is really effective. The emotionless face creates a cold, moody and miserable atmosphere to the print.
Tumblr media
Another one of her prints that caught my eye was this one because its like she captured a picture in 2d almost as if the car is moving. Again with the face it looks quite miserable like her eyes and mouth is frowning. The detailing in her hair makes It look lifelike but not too realistic. The doubling of the image is really effective and would love to experiment with my work.

Look at this... 👀
Angie hoffmeister
Angie Hoffmeister is a dry point artist.
On first impressions her art feels layered and mysterious. It is made in the style of plastic etching with a scratchy tool and ink, this art work could show messages of decision making or hallucinations with people due to the intense stares and overlapping imagery. In her drawing she doesn't include much shading using different marking techniques its mainly simple face outlines and feature then copied and over lapped several times to create a mutated 3 dimensional face. I could use her style in my own work to copy and layer prints into my board.

Angie hoffmeister is a dry point etching artist and her art is so clever as you can tell from this piece of art. Although this is all just lines with ink the way that the faces are overlapping eachother is so clever, this piece of art almost looks as if the face is blurred or even slightly moving. All of her work is made to a large scale so that features like eyelashes can get enough detail.
