100 Albums to understand Muse - Part 1 [STYLE Series #004 - Muse (August 2010)]
The members of Muse started as a band in the heyday of Britpop, but their strongest influences were the US alternative scene, as well as the Grebo music scene such as Ned's Atomic Dustbin. Their musical interests broadened, especially Matthew's, as he travelled and met people in different countries, and he dabbled in tango, flamenco and even Italian folk music.
Muse were, of course, greatly influenced by the greats of the rock world, including Queen, but they also greedily embraced classical music such as Chopin and Rachmaninoff.
Here we introduce some of their influences and the artists they were involved with. These are 100 discs for a deeper enjoyment of Muse's world, and you'd be remiss if you didn't listen to them!

Back In Black
(1980)
The sixth album from Australia's greatest treasure, AC/DC. The riff of the classic ‘Back in Black’ on this album is one of the first phrases that every boy who picks up a guitar learns. A great rock basic, so to speak. Of course, the [guitar] prince is no exception [to this]. He performed a cover of the song here and there at the Australian festival Big Day Out. -J

(2009)
Adam Lambert was born and raised in the US, and his dramatic vocals are a feature of his US TV show ‘American Idol’. His major-label debut featured songwriting contributions from Lady Gaga, Pink, Weezer's Reeves, Darkness' Justin and many other well-known names. Matthew also contributed a song called ‘Soaked’ to the album. -H

(2002)
Matthew once travelled to Spain to study flamenco guitar, but it was Francisco Talega of ‘Memories of the Alhambra’ fame, born in Spain, who laid the foundations for classical guitar in the 20th century. This is a collection of masterpieces by Andrés Segovia, the master who took up many of Talega's works and popularised the classical guitar. -S

Belgian avant-garde progressive band. The band's diverse style is characterised by the use of piano and strings in tangos, contemporary-style suites and fast-moving punk, all of which make full use of the high skills of the band members. The band's wonderfully chaotic sound, where materialism and realism collide, is too good to be described as ‘only known to those in the know’. -M

I'm of the belief that the best way to enjoy an album is to listen to it from start to end, so that we can understand the influences far better. La muerte de Enrique IV de Castilla: natural o por envenenamiento
Al volver de una cacería, en los montes del Pardo, Enrique IV de Castilla se encontró mal y se refugió en el Alcázar de Madrid. La enfermedad del rey se lo llevó de este mundo el 12 de diciembre de 1474. La causa de la muerte,"flujo de sangre" como entonces se dijo, no está demasiado clara. Los síntomas que proporcionan los cronistas apuntan a una enfermedad dolorosa del vientre, acaso una litiasis renal o hepática, una nefritis o un cáncer de colon. En su agonía sufrió fuertes dolores y arrojó mucha sangre. Circularon rumores de que el difunto monarca había sido envenenado. Su esposa, Juana de Portugal, demandó una investigación a los Consejos y su hija Juana envió una carta a las autoridades de Madrid para que investigaran. Pero todos decidieron hacer oídos sordos. En su manifiesto de 1475, la hija del rey acusó a Isabel y Fernando de haber envenenado a su padre. Pero esa acusación era arma de dos filos, pues el monarca había estado, desde enero, en compañía de Juan Pacheco y de los partidarios de Juana.
En enero de 1474, Andrés de Cabrera había ofreció un banquete al rey y a los entonces príncipes Isabel y Fernando, reyes de Sicilia, en la ciudad de Segovia. En la Crónica de Enrique IV de Galíndez de Carvajal se dice:
Fiesta del día de los Reyes (6-I-1474)… después que ansi uvieron comido, el rey y sus hermanos se retruxeron a una cámara para oír música de instrumentos y cantares, con que paresció rezivir deleitación espiritual. Oída la música, fueles dada sumptuosa colación y passado algún espacio el rey se sintió mal de dolor de costado, de tal son que fue necesario irse a reposar a su palacio, donde por algunos días estuvo bien trabaxado, pero hechas algunas procesiones y rogarias en la ciudad y en los monasterios por su salud, paresció aver mejoría en su persona sin sentir dolor alguno, aunque siempre le quedaron reliquias de cámaras y gómitos y echar sangre en la orina hasta que murió.
Enríquez del Castillo en su Crónica da mucha importancia a este convite y afirma reiteradamente que desde entonces Enrique IV siempre estuvo enfermo. Para algunos historiadores el envenenamiento fue un rumor falso y la mala salud del rey algo evidente. Se dice que su muerte fue fruto de la mala vida digestiva que llevaba, con grandes comilonas y atracones, y con purgaciones propias. En vida, Enrique IV había descuidado abiertamente su salud, no fiándose de médicos, abusando de purgas y vomitivos como medio de buscar alivio a sus dolores.
Para el doctor Gregorio Marañón el cuadro clínico caracterizado por intensos dolores intestinales, anasarca y diarreas sanguinolentas, le hizo pensar en una muerte por envenenamiento con arsénico. El doctor tuvo la oportunidad, como miembro de la Real Academia de la Historia, de estar presente en 1946 en la exhumación de los restos de Enrique IV, descubiertos por azar un año antes detrás del gran retablo del Monasterio de Guadalupe junto a los de su madre. El doctor Marañón manifestó:
Los trastornos descritos en la enfermedad de Enrique IV pueden responder a un determinado número de enfermedades, aunque mucho mejor que a cualquiera de ellas se acoplan las de envenenamiento. Encaja tan bien esta sintomatología en la sospecha de envenenamiento que moralmente nos queda la casi certidumbre de que ésta fue la causa del término de su infeliz vida y reinado.
Así era, pues, el monarca, como le habían pintando sus cronistas: alto, recio, desgarbado de cuerpo, de anchas caderas, de cabeza redonda, grande y prognática. Así le sorprendió la muerte, de cuya causa no queda rastro en el cadáver. El tiempo hizo desaparecer la súbita y atroz hinchazón que, según Enriquez del Castillo, precedió a su final; y nos ha transmitido el cuerpo, ya enjuto, vestido con las mismas ropas groseras y con las mismas polainas de cuero con que se tendió a morir en la cama miserable que usaba.
En un manuscrito de la Biblioteca Nacional localizado por Pilar García Louapre, redactado por el monje Jerónimo de la Cruz, de la Orden de San Jerónimo, se describen los últimos momentos del monarca:
Su estado empeoraba, estaba flaco y muy débil, los vómitos y grandes dolores gástricos comenzaron de nuevo. El domingo once de diciembre, los médicos decidieron purgarle como era frecuente en aquella época, tras lo cual se sintió más aliviado y hasta pudo comer algunas vituallas. Durmió una hora y media con mucho sosiego, despertándose con un agudo dolor de costado que no cesó en el término de diez horas. Vomitaba y echaba sangre por la orina.
Parece ser que poco antes de su muerte su cuerpo experimentó cambios repentinos como la hinchazón generalizada con deformidad (¿anasarca?). Según el cronista Valera: "se tornó tan disforme, que era maravilloso de ver". Como existen claras referencias documentadas acerca de la hematuria "que no le abandonó hasta su muerte"; de las crisis de "dolor de costado persistente" incluso en horas previas al fallecimiento, y de la anasarca, no es muy aventurado conjeturar que quizás la enfermedad crónica del monarca (la litiasis renal) desembocara en una nefropatía aguda obstructiva que, entre otras causas, como los padecimientos digestivos (vómitos, dolor gástrico y cámaras) le llevaron a la tumba. Estas especulaciones no descartan, sin embargo, la posibilidad de un envenenamiento, aunque parece más verosímil un cuadro de toxemia aguda iatrogénica producida por los mórficos o analgésicos suministrados por los médicos durante la fase del cólico renal persistente que pudieron influir negativamente en su deteriorado estado.
