Mick didn't wanted to be there, not at all.
They were in Sahkir, after the testing of the new season incoming and they didn't went as good as he thought it would be, so he was feeling a bit down. But anyways George dragged him to the bar with him and other fellow drivers.
They were all drinking for fun and vibing to the music because their testing went really well. Mick, on the other hand, have already seen critics of his way of driving and people comparing him to his dad. He hated that, everything he does is compared to what his father's done. Mick loved his father with all his heart, but he's not only his surname.
"Mick!" Lando shouted, already tipsy. "There's a gorgeous blonde that can't take her eyes off you!"
"What?" was the only thing he could articulate. Mick looked around, trying to find that girl probably Lando has invented.
"That girl," he pointed directly at her, making her lift her eyes to him. "She's eyeing you, you see that?"
"Maybe because you're pointing at her so bad it even hurts me," Mick said, rolling his eyes.
"Nah, she was looking at you before. Trust me on this one, bro," Lando insisted. He took a long sip of his drink, finishing it. And after that he ordered another one to the waiter
"I'm not really in the mood, and you should stop drinking," Mick advised, pressing his lips.
Lando let out a long sigh and even rolled his eyes to make it more dramatic.
"Yeah, whatever. She's pretty, and you're pretty too," Lando argued. Mick lost the thread of the conversation, since when Lando thinks he's pretty? "I think you should go and talk to her."
"And I think you should stop thinking,"
"Why are you so boring, man!" Lando said, almost shouting.
"I told you, I'm not in the mood," he remarked, sipping in his drink.
"You know what?" Lando said. Mick thought it was a retorical question, but then he saw Lando truly waiting for him to answer.
"What?" he wondered, with a long face.
"If you're not talking to her, she is talking to you!" Lando said, before getting up.
"Wait, what the fuck?!" Mick tried to grab Lando's shirt, but he was already really close to that girl. "Fuck..."
He gazed out the whole scene; how Lando started talking -bothering- that girl by tapping her in the shoulder and how she looked totally confused about what he was saying. Then, Lando pointed at him and that girl, instead of frowning and giving him a bad look, as Mick thought it would be, she smiled at him softly and wave him shyly.
Lando took her with his arm and walked her to Mick.
"Mick, mate! This is Dominique, isn't she gorgeous? I told her you said that, so you have to agree with me," Lando said very fast, stepping on the words.
"Uh, yeah," he was getting nervous. "I mean, absolutely! You are gorgeous, yes."
Dominique gave him a wide smiled but she quickly began to blushed.
"Well, I'm gonna find George and all this people, so you can have a little bit of peace," Lando said and when he left, he winked ant Mick in the weirdest way possible.
Dominique sat by his side at the bar counter and ordered a cocktail to the waiter. "Thanks," she said, when the waiter returned with her drink. "So..."
She was ready to start a conversation, but Mick interrupted her with a grin.
"I'm really sorry about my friend, he is drunk and I didn't mean to make you feel uncomfortable," he excused himself, pressing his lips together.
"Oh, no worries! I mean, I was actually eyeing you," Dominique admited.
"You were?" Mick was totally surprised, and maybe a bit excited.
"Yeah! I came here with my friends and I've been telling them all night that you looked really cute from afar, and even cuter this close," she lean a bit into him, brushing their shoulders. Mick couldn't say a word. "Now you have to compliment me back, darling."
"Oh! Yeah, I've said it before, you are stunning," he said, trying so hard to not hesitate.
She laughed. "So, what are you doing in Sahkir? You don't look very local, we're not gonna lie,"
"Neither do you," They both laughed. "I'm working here,"
"Oh, me too!" Dominique said. "Well, sort of. Tomorrow is my first day,"
"Nice," Mick was going to add something, but Dominique quickly took the word
"So... you wanna hook up or something?" she asked, finishing her drink.
Mick almost have forgotten why Dominique was talking to him. She just wanted to hook up, that was her aim since their first interaction. Flirt a bit and then go straight to fucking.
"Okay," he agreed.
She was a beautiful woman and definitely his type, why would he denied it?
Mick felt off the whole time. They didn't have that connection like his other relationships, they were just two strangers fucking. And it hurt him knowing that Dominique only talked to him looking for sex.
Maybe he's just an idiot but for a few seconds he thought they were connecting in some way. Obviously, the next morning she was gone.
🌷🌷🌷
"Girl, I just hooked up with some random guy," Dominique rushed to get out of the hotel where she left Mick sleeping.
The first thing she did was calling her best friend, who was in the other side of the country.
"Dom! We talked about this," her friend said, sighting. "You have to stop turning into a slut everytime you drink."
"Hey, I'm not a slut, I'm slutty. Know the difference," Dominique tried defending herself.
But her friend was totally right, when Dominique gets drunk she doesn't scream or crazy dances, she flirts with every guy that appears in her way. Before Mick she also was watching some of his friends aswell, but it was Mick the one who caught her eye.
She hated that facet of her, going hungover her first day of work is not something to be proud of. She just got hired by Haas to be an engineer in the upcoming season of Formula 1. Dom actually didn't adore the job, she was never a fan of the sport, or any sport in general. But travelling all around the world sounds too good to say no. And also the pay really good.
Her new collegues were the ones who dragged her to the bar that night. "I think I'm gonna kill myself," she said to her friend, still on the phone. "I was awful, awfully awful. I turn into a horny bitch-ass anytime I drink,"
Dominique sighed and she drink a long sip of water, in an attempt to make her headache leave.
"No man peace," her friend said, with a little laugh.
"Oh, shut up. It makes me fell like a horrible person. And the man seemed so sweet and nice,"
"You're not a horrible person," her friend assured. "You're just slutty,"
Dominique rolled her eyes. "Ok, I'm gonna hung up now,"
She took a taxi to get to the circuit where the practics where being held. It was the first time in all her life that she has put a feet in a Formula 1 circuit. One of the workers of Haas show her the whole place, ending the sort-of-tour in the Haas garage.
"And this is Mick, you are going to be his engineer the whole season," he said and right after that he leaves them alone.
They both recognized each other at the very first moment. She could've been drunk as fuck, but Mick has the bluest eyes she has ever seen and she remember them perfectly.
"Wait, you work here?" Mick asked, astonished.
"Yeah... isn't that obvious?" Dominique pressed her lips together, forcing her to not smile.
"Well, you didn't tell me yesterday," he argued.
"I was focusing on your pretty eyes," Dominique admited.
Mick lower his eyes for a moment, hiding his blushed cheeks to get into character again.
"You know, you're not the first person of referred to me as pretty," he said with a smirk.
"You should be proud, pretty boy," She didn't know why they were flirting in that way. "I actually thought you would be mad at me,"
"Yeah? Why?" he questioned, crossing his arms by his chest.
"Well, I wasn't very nice the other night. But it's something that happens to me when I'm drunk, and I also weren't in the mood of talking," she admited.
"Oh, really?" he exaggered. "I didn't even realize."
Dominique looked away because of Mick's sarcasm. "If you're going to start with sex jokes I'm gonna leave," she made the gesture of going away. "I'm sorry, ok? I was a total bitch yesterday..."
Mick didn't say anything.
"Now it's when you deny it and tell me that I'm super cool and gorgeous," Dominique insisted, biting her lips.
"It's okay. Dominique, right?" They both laughed.
"Yes. You were Mick, right?" she didn't leave him time to answer. "I don't know why I asked, I totally remember your name,"
"Ok, now I'm impressed!" Mick said, walking with her to the inside of the garage.
"I told you, I'm a cool person. And I actually thought you were cute," she remarked.
"Really?"
"No,"
They bursted into laughs.
"You're funny," Mick said.
"No, I'm being serious. I don't like you at all," she insisted, still smiling. "Like, if you asked me for a date I probably throw up,"
"Now you're being dramatic. You can't be that level of dramatic with someone you just met," Mick said, frowning in a very cute way for Dom's eyes.
"Try me,"
Mick didn't even think twice. "You wanna go on a date with me?"
"Yes,"
They went silent for a few seconds. "So no vomit?"
"No... sorry for disappointing you, darling," Dominique pressed her lips together.
"Calling me darling without being on a date, how lustful," Mick rolled his eyes.
"Alright, bro," Dominique hit him with her fist in his shoulder. "Don't you think we should get some work done? Let's do some driving and strategic shit,"
Mick blinked a couple of times. "Do you know anything about Formula 1?"
"Not at all,"
"Cool,"
"You see? I'm super cool,"
"I didn't mean you,"
"Shut up, Mick." she said right after. "Or I'll cut your brakes,"
They kept that dynamic for the rest of the day. Dom's insinuations increased practicaly every minute, and Mick adored answering her something three times worse. And at the end of the week the long-awaited date arrived.
Even though they were staying at the same hotel, Mick insisted coming and pick her up.
"Oh, hi," Dominique said with a smirk. She chose a nice light pink dress and he was wearing a linen shirt. "It's nice seeing you with something different than fireproofs and that awful suit."
"You can't say that, Dom. It's bad for the team image," Mick insisted.
She loved that he started calling her Dom instead of the usual Dominique, it made her blushed in the craziest way.
"Darling, we have no team image," Dominique said, smiling.
Mick rolled his eyes dramaticly. All over the week she didn't stop bullying the team. She was right about all the things she says? Absolutely. But if someone except from Mick hears her, she probably will be jobless again.
"Where are you taking me?" Dominique asked, hooking his arm to Mick's.
"I know a nice restaurant in the city, sounds good?"
"Sounds delightful," she smiled softly. "You're paying, right?"
Mick bursted into laughs. "Of fucking course, I'm a gentleman,"
"If you say so,"
"Then we can do fifty/fifty," Mick shrugged his shoulders, pursing his lips.
"Alright, I'll stop. I'm ready to have a nice and relaxing evening," Dom said. "And then we're fucking."
"On the first date? Daring,"
"Deny it," she made a short pause. "Go on, deny it,"
The silence was loud and then Mick looked at her with a devilish smile. Mick drove to the restaurant while Dominique was changing the song every minute. At the restaurant he sat facing the window and they ordered food to share.
They talked and laughed a little bit too loud. The dinner went so good that Dominique was worried, how can a human being be that interesting and that cute?
"Hey," Dominique changed the way of the conversation when they were arriving to the hotel. "We're not going to fuck."
"Really? I thought that was all you wanted. Again,"
Dominique, between laughs said, "No, I'm being serious. I want to do this in the right way,"
"Wait, we're going to have three dates so I can kiss you?" Mick said, wide-opening his eyes.
"No, no. I was hoping you would kiss me like... right now?"
"Cool,"
Mick leaned into her, and she had to stoped him so she could control her laugh and finally their lips interwinted. In that fleeting moment, time seemed to stand still as they lost themselves in each other. She could feel her heart racing, matching the rhythm of his own. Dom entangled her hands in Mick's hair, pushing him closer to her.
Mick put a hand in her back and she took that as a sign to separate their lips.
"Mick, hey," Dominique said, connecting looks with Mick. He was totally blushed. "I'm being serious, I want to take things slowly."
"Okay, I can do that," he nodded, with a soft smile.
"I mean, we are working together so maybe if we go very fast we'll have problems and I don't really want to have problems, because you're very sweet and I like you."
She left out a long breath.
"You like me?" he faked susprise. Dominique rolled her eyes and then she felt how Mick grabbed her hand softly. "I like you too, Dom. Just to be clear,"
"Oh, thank you. How thoughtful,"
Mick laughed. "C'mon, I'll walk you to the door of your room."

WORD: LOVE
Fake dating fic:
Damn 24 times in my fic and I'm ⅔ into chapter 3
And, really, he had other things to worry about, like finding out that all this time he had been in love with his best friend.
He’s scrolling on his phone looking through reviews on Letterboxd, an app May recommended to him because he loves sharing his opinions in movies, when the door opens quietly.
So I confess my love to you and, boom, we’re together.
Tía Pepa loves me,” Buck says smugly.
Because you love me and I love selfies,” Buck says.
I’m already preparing for the questions on how I managed to convince you to fall in love with me when you’re such a catch.”
They’ll love you.”
Yeah, Buck thinks, I just wish you loved me too.
They love watching the dramatic bridezillas or weird parents.
For years I’ve watched him fall in love with you but never taking that step, instead trying so hard to be with someone else.”
He tries to focus on that, and not the fact that Pepa thinks Eddie has been in love with him for years.
Eddie isn’t in love with him
“You look lovely.”
She clicks her tongue, “Young, new love
He loves driving, but he definitely needed a break.
I’ve loved Eddie since… well, don’t even know. It feels like I’ve always loved him.”
At least he doesn’t have to lie about being in love with Eddie – except to Eddie.
But you love me.
Well, he knows Eddie loves him. You can’t be best friends for 6 years and not love each other. But it’s not in the way Buck loves him.
Because I love you, and that’s more important.”
Protective Eddie
Chimney says yes, he loves it.
He can’t force Eddie to love him like more.
He does not get to treat Eddie unfairly just because he doesn’t love him that way.
“If she really loved you, she wouldn’t be ‘stolen’ from you.”
“Are you saying my girl didn’t love me?!” The man raises his voice.
Because I love him. I’m in love with him.
As if one could just choose who to love.”
Why do you think he doesn’t love you back like that?”
His parents had just walked in as Buck had said, “I love you,” to Bobby
Pfff this got long lmao

I know I said I won’t be speaking on the Priscilla movie and I don’t plan to. But I have been reading reviews from the critics and saw some posted on tiktok and they are WAAAAY different than all those bad ones saying how it makes Elvis look bad on letterboxd. The ones I’ve read confirmed what I kinda already figured. That they aren’t gonna paint Elvis in a bad light like everyone assumes. Yes, they will touch on his flaws. But it’s not going to paint him as a monster. I feel like with Priscilla clarifying that over the last week over so, I feel like it really isn’t something people need to be stressed about. But also the film is through her eyes and she has never saw him as a monster or a bad person.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also read a time magazine review about the film and it even says and I quote “Elvis is not a bad guy” when talking about the film.

more revalink hcs from this post part 4
previous revalink hcs here: x x x
full disclosure i rearranged and took out some of the questions around because a handful of them were related to cooking/eating and it's like. what else can i say other than link is disaster gay who can cook and revali is disaster gay who can drive
who’s the first to wake up in the morning
if you've read the sleepy link x coddler revali fic, you know what's up but here's a quick recap:
at first it was link because of his insomnia, hypervigilance, or his nightmares, and it would end up waking revali up too, because revali is a light sleeper
but gradually, link relearns how to sleep in again, comforted by the warmth and steadiness of revali's embrace, and now revali is the one who wakes up first by default and he stays in bed with link cuddled up on his chest, admiring how soft and peaceful his beloved songbird is <3
who’s the one to make breakfast:
revali is the type of person who doesn't eat breakfast because he can't stomach food that early in the morning (i'm projecting again) and him and link wake up pretty early as per the previous concept
but link always makes him eat a little bit because he's a firm believer that breakfast is the most important meal of the day!
(in the future, link is the type to cook a big meal for every mealtime to sit down and eat with revali and their babies, because food is his love language 🥹)
who orders lunch
if link isn't around to make his food, it's revali
bitch would be living on that hellofresh shit if it weren't for link making their food all the time
could you imagine youtuber!revali doing a hellofresh sponsor
"yes, well, i suppose i should offer the proper gratitude for the sponsor of today's video, hellofresh. without my boyfriend or you, i might have starved to death and left the world one less god for its mortals to walk with."
who steals food from the other’s plate without asking
link LMFAO he's just a hungry little guy
"link, you have your own plate with twice the amount of servings on it."
"i cooked the food, i can eat whatever i want even if it's on your plate!"
revali is so soft for him though, he'll let link eat as much as he wants
revalink but they're the yoonkook moment where yoongi says watching jungkook eat makes him feel full
who cleans up the kitchen afterwards
revali cleans because he feels bad that he is a disaster in the kitchen and cannot help whatsoever during the actual creation of the meals; he is not allowed near the cooking pot 👍
will straight up snatch the plates from link's hands and insists on cleaning and link will smile at him fondly as revali aggressively scrubs the dishes
who curls up next to the other and falls asleep due to a full tummy
link for sure because he eats so fast and so much
revali will roll his eyes but continue eating as link snuggles into his lap for a quick food-induced power nap because revali will still make him get up to go take a shower and get ready for bed properly
who would suggest a quickie in the morning before work
LINK LMFAO WHO ELSE
he's already straddling revali's lap before revali can even register what link just said and then— oop. revali is going to be 30 minutes late to work now
who suggests they both ditch work to lay around all day
neither of them would actually because they both have really strong self-discipline
they only suggest ditching when they notice the other being really tired or burnt out, and then suddenly link is at the receptionist's desk at revali's workplace demanding they let revali go home early like he's a parent pulling their kid out of class for an appointment
who chooses the movies
revali hands down
he's the type of guy who took theatre, film history, movie analysis, and all those kinds of classes as general eds in college
he has a letterboxd account where he frequently updates his list of watched movies and heavily critical reviews. he's amassed a small cult following there because of how out of pocket-ly mean his reviews are 😭 to the point where people start using his reviews as memes KDJFHKDJHF
link is one of the people who use it as a meme and is the one that tells revali that he's a internet microcelebrity now. revali facepalms (but secretly his ego has been stroked)
who initiates kissing during the movie, thus distracting the other from the movie all together
both of them HAHA
it's mostly link, but if link chose the movie and revali's not into it, he'll start slowly making moves on link KJDHFKJD
"come on link, is the movie really more interesting than me~?"
"shh revali, singing killed his grandma 🥺🥺🥺🥺" KJDHFKDHFKDJHFKDJ
who distracts the other from trying to work at home
mostly link because he gets pretty needy
revali does it more often than you would expect though, they're almost equally very needy and clingy to each other
link just keeps barging into revali's office to the point where revali has to lock the door
then link is just sliding down to the floor against the door screaming the lyrics to Gotta go my own way from High school musical until revali unlocks the door again and begrudgingly lets link sit on his lap while he works
if it's revali, he will straight up just pick link up from his work even if link complains, carries link to their room to flop link on the bed, lie down on top of him, and then cuddle ❤️
who asks to go get ice cream like a five year old
it's absolutely link
if revali says no, link books it after the ice cream truck with revali yelling and running after him
revali pays for link's fucked up spongebob popsicle though 🥺 and link makes him get a fucked up patrick popsicle to match
revali also the type to be like "we have ice cream at home" only for link to respond with "nuh uh i ate it all"
revali: what? we had like 2 huge buckets of ice cream in the freezer. what do you mean you ate it all
link: 🥺
who takes pictures of their partner eating ice cream
revali. link made him take like 30 pics and post at least one on his instagram story
(revali keeps the other 29 pictures of link though in his folder of cute link pics to look at later)
who makes a sexual joke about the dripping ice cream on their partner’s face
you're not gonna believe this but it's revali
it slipped out he didn't actually mean to say it out loud
but link stares at him with wide eyes and mouth agape, then suddenly downs the rest of his ice cream, and then starts dragging revali home so he can jump him in the bedroom
link is just 😭 a horny little creature idk how revali keeps up with him
who stays up until 2 reading
it's revali, you know damn well he got those reading glasses and one of those lamps you clip onto the back of the book
he tried leaving the whole room light on at first but link was like i sleep in here too dickhead Close the damn light
the book-clip lamp was actually a gift from link because he did Not want revali to be contributing even more to their electricity bill
link has tried to join in but he's such a sleepy little guy he falls asleep with the book on his face and he felt bad (revali didn't really care but link was nearly gonna cry from being so guilty)
so instead, revali will read some of his own book aloud to link to make him feel involved until link falls asleep to his voice and also clinging to revali's side
who stares at their partner while their sleeping
revali of course but he doesn't do it in the creepy twilight edward way
when revali notices that link has fallen asleep to his reading, he'll put his bookmark in and set the book on the table to comb his fingers through link's hair
he just stares fondly at link, wondering how he was blessed to have a gift of a person like link because revali thinks of himself as a difficult person to love. how does link put up with him? why did link choose to stay with him? i guess he'll never know
(that's a lie; revali voiced these insecurities to him once and link got so mad he yelled at revali about how much he loved him and why, then locked himself in the office for the rest of the night only for revali to wake up the next morning to an entire powerpoint presentation from link on why revali is the most lovable person in the world)
who kisses their partner while they sleep
also revali but not in the creepy sleeping beauty way
revali is a big fan of forehead kisses especially because he's taller than link so he often likes to pull link closer and kiss his forehead before they leave for work or something
and he does the same as he's gazing upon link's sleeping face, wondering how he was blessed to have such an angel of a human being for a lover
revali will cup link's face with one hand and start with one kiss on link's forehead, a second one on his nose, and the last one being a very soft, chaste kiss on his lips 🤍 he's just so soft for link y'all 😭🥹
one time link woke up during the second kiss but didn't open his eyes until revali kissed him on the mouth, and then immediately pushed revali onto the bed to kiss him back harder. like i said 😭 horny little creacher

Heath’s Ultimate Horror Recs; A MASTERPOST.
We’ll start off with my letterboxd top four (in no true order)
1. The Thing (1982)
Tumblr media
First of all, it is unanimously agreed that the only way this movie could have been improved would be if Kurt Russel had worn a crop top that said “baby slut”. This movie has everything and is one of the (if not the original) Imposter movies. It takes place in the arctic, and is a little bit creature, gore, and psychological horror. It’s smart and it's fun! Not too scary, but a good time for sure.
2. Cabin in the Woods (2011)
Tumblr media
Please ignore that Joss Whedon made this as it is, unfortunately, INCREDIBLY fun. Like so much fucking fun. It’s a movie that completely deconstructs horror movie tropes, and I don’t mean that in a pretentious not-like-the-other-movies way. It literally deconstructs them, and has the most ridiculous half-twist at the end that really just ties it all together. If you like final girls, and every possible horror movie villain you could get your hands on, this is the movie for you. If you don’t already know the plot, go in blind.
3. Possession (1981)
Tumblr media
NOBODY, NOBODY, NOBODYYYYYYYY. This movie personifies what it feels like to have a Mitski-induced breakdown. I believe it was banned for a time in much of Europe upon release for going too hard. It’s not really like “demon on the ceiling. gotta call the exorcist” and more like “go stupid go crazy”. Gets More and More as it goes on. Bonus points for Sam Neill, an underrated horror guy. Foreign Film. 10/10.
4. Jennifer’s Body (2009)
Tumblr media
Literally ahead of its time. Girls kiss girls kiss boys kill boys kill girls. Yeah. I’m using the word- it’s camp TO ME. Again, not particularly scary (that’s what the next section is for) but it is very fun and also it is a romantic tragedy. I don’t know what else to say.
SUPER HONORABLE MENTIONS (that might be mentioned in later categories):
Nope (2022)
Candyman (1992)
Alien (1979)
Okay. Now the ones that really got me good (that are rec’able)
1. Hereditary
Tumblr media
Did I like the plot of this movie? No. Did I like this movie? No. Did I leave the theater wanting to crawl out of my skin and throw said skin into the trash with the popcorn? Yes. Rancid vibes, and for that it gets #1. Personally, it hit all my marks for going NOPE. -1000/10. (Really though, I thought the plot was dumb but my god was this movie the literal definition of horrific.)
2. The Descent (2005)
Tumblr media
I watched this movie at FAR too young of an age. I was like 8. My mom showed it to me because she thought it was cool. It made me scared of the dark for the next decade of my life. I’m a bit desensitized to horror at this point so I didn’t find it that scary upon rewatch. However, it’s my favorite combo of creature, proper build up, character-driven, and action-y. Also it’s a literal blood bath. :^)
3. 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016)
Tumblr media
This movie is not a classic horror, but it did fill me with immense dread and shock and it has a left a lasting impression on me. You are a girl who gets in a car crash and wakes up in a bunker with John Badman (?) and another guy and he’s telling you the world has ended outside and that if you were to leave you’d immediately die. Except there’s no way to know if he’s telling the truth. I remember my body physically hurting from the stress after watching this for the first time.
4. It (2017)
Tumblr media
I’m not above the clown movie. Listen, was it cosmically horrific? No! But it did have a bunch of good scares and it’s honestly one of my favorite ensemble cast movies to have ever been made. The sequel can die in a dumpster fire though. I still squirm in my seat for a few scenes even though I know Mr. Skarsgard is gonna pop out.
Conceptual Absolute Fuckin’ Bangers ( and/or amazing visuals)
1. A Quiet Place (2018)
Tumblr media
I held my breath the entire movie, and so did the rest of the theater because it pulls you in so well. Bawled my eyes out. Amazing story, and it keeps your nerves frayed the entire time.
2. Candyman (1992)
Tumblr media
My most favoritest slasher. Actually perhaps the only slasher I will recommend. Underhyped, a story less told and it just feels different in a nice way. It has everything, including the Looks.
3. Crimson Peak (2015)
Tumblr media
High drama, and arguably the prettiest visuals I’ve ever seen. Definitely a vibe-based movie and not for everyone. Guillermo Del Toro at his prettiest. I would read the content warnings though, because the plot is also not for everyone.
4. Queen of the Damned (2002)
Tumblr media
I’ll use the word again. Camp. This movie almost made me become a Vampire Person (notorious werewolf person). It’s ridiculous and bad but its also good and a vibe and everyone is very hot so what’s not to love.
5. Nope (2022)
Tumblr media
MY BABY MY BAAAAAAAAAABY MY BAAABBY MY BABBBYYY MY BABY. Zero criticism, it’s just not on my top four horror list because I don’t think it’s a horror. I think its a sci-fi suspense action mystery masterpiece with horror as an undertone. Literally best movie of the decade.
6. Re-Animator (1985)
Tumblr media
Cult classic. And a classic example of they made it so subtext gay that now its just text gay. Ridiculous. Body horror abound. 10/10.
7. Alien (1979)
Tumblr media
Can you say anything bad about this movie? No. It’s been awhile since I’ve seen it, but it’s very good. And of course the Face Huggers and Chest Bursters can never get enough of their dues for being icons.
8. The Ritual (2017)
Tumblr media
Please just trust me. If you like what Nope did with The Design, you might like this movie. Because ohhhh ohhhh The Design. The first two-thirds I quite enjoy, the last third loses me a bit but then I really like the last scene. But yeah. The Design. Also spooky and fun. And it’s on netflix! Nice!
Here for a fun time, not a smart or “good” time!
1. Pitch Black (2000)
Tumblr media
Yes, I am recc’ing a movie that stars Vin Diesel. I like Riddick. Die mad about it. But I also like this movie a lot! It’s bad in a 2000s sci-fi kinda way. But it commits to what it does and I like the characters. Shoot me. Nice blend of horror and action.
2. Tremors (1990)
Tumblr media
Heath Lore: for like four years in a row I made my friends watch this on my birthday. It’s so very dumb and also so very fun. And. Gay cowboys. Yeehaw. (There are two sequels made prior to like 2008, and I have also watched those. They are even more dumb.)
3. Poltergeist (1982)
Tumblr media
My mom also showed me this movie when I was about 6 or so. Traumatized me for life. I was a little bit paranoid about EVERYTHING. I’m re-watching for the first time in a long time this year, but honestly this movie goes so hard and for what. To be rated PG? That’s how my mom convinced me to watch it.
4. Brain Damage (1988)
Tumblr media
gonna be honest. went full monkey brain during this one. main character...sexy. this concludes my thought process. it’s very dumb and bad, and i would probably read the trigger warnings before you watch it.
5. The Evil Dead (franchise)
Tumblr media
So much happening, I would argue none of it “good”. Fun time.
6. The People Under the Stairs (1991)
Tumblr media
Spoiler alert: there are people under the stairs. A movie where I kept yelling WHAT?! W H A T?! Amazing. 10/10.
Modern Horror Gems (not Oscar Worthy)
1. The Conjuring (2013)
Tumblr media
I really like this movie. It’s not perfect and it’s not innovative, but I think it was well made and I think the scares are good. Also Ed and Lorraine Warren (movie versions, not the real people) are relationship goals for real.
2. Shutter Island (2010)
Tumblr media
There is definitely a lot happening in this movie. Psychological. Story driven. I did like it though.
3. Revenge (2017)
Tumblr media
Action, thriller, horror. Woman stuck with a group of bad men in the middle of the desert. Woman seeks Revenge with a capital R. French film, very violent.
Final category: Movies that make you go Huh?!
1. Titane (2021)
Tumblr media
Such a weird fucking movie. So fucking weird. So fucking weird. French film.
2. Eraserhead
Tumblr media
I discovered my love for brown noise through this movie and fell asleep within thirty minutes. I liked it quite a bit though, I think, when I finished it the next day.
OK THAT’S ALL FOR NOW. THANK YOU FOR READING <3

there's been an uptick in people asking if they can do tuesdayposts too (yes, hi hello yes, my god, please do i want to read them, the format isn't copyrighted or anything) which made me think about how i use the tuesdayposts as an excuse to go looking for weird shit and why i'm so annoyed when something is recommended to me but the rec doesn't give me a good pitch. this grew into a digression about the function of a critic and what i use reviews for. and what like axes of things i find important or what i use various sources for. so it's a separate post now bc there's not a real...point to it, mostly getting my thoughts in order. also it is very long
while i would not wish the title of "culture critic" upon my worst enemy, let's sidestep “oooh all critics/tastemakers/influencers are bullshit”. imo you’re supposed to find one whose taste aligns with yours and THEN use their reviews to find new things. if my taste aligns with yours, cool! if you're just here to see what weird shit i made or pulled out of an estate sale this week, also cool!
i think the most successful discussion of a work is "what is it/what's the pitch, what is it TRYING to do given the context of the time and people who created it, does it accomplish its goals or tell its story in a coherent fashion" and then finally what i think most people get most hung up on is "do I PERSONALLY think this work accomplished its goals or storytelling in a manner i found reasonable/understandable/liked".
i really, really, really hate the style of review that tells me nothing about the work except there's a token gay person in it. i saw zero useful reviews of OFMD before i gave up and watched the first ep myself.
here are some people who fulfill the above useful criteria, i pay attention to, and why their recs work for me: gita jackson, a culture/games critic over at vice knows the difference between a movie being Good and a movie being Fun, and is a queer person under 30 with a film degree so our needs align on several important axes. so i waited to watch the rpatz batman until they wrote an article and they said if it was fun or not.
cyberexboyfriend on instagram and i think mainly tiktok (lots of crossposts) has opinions i agree with about mcmansion architecture, and an eye for the weird late eighties through early oughts fashion and art that fell through the cracks. like the media that fuels the Extremely Online art i generally find annoying, but the source media of edited anime or fantasy movie screencaps on tshirts is generally pretty cool. this fills an important function to me bc i like going "ah! i know where that's from" when i see a hot girl in joanns wearing a shirt from vapor95.
i follow exactly four people on letterboxd and they are the aforementioned critics plus two mutuals bc i already know their general media tastes align with mine. wendy @dying-suffering-french-stalkers is very very good at finding things that have a certain quality of emotion to them. not full horror, not full tragedy, and not full melancholia either, but a catharsis or a putting an era to bed gently and turning the lights out when you're done. honey @birdcfparadise is willing to sit through a lotta goddamn nonsense in order to report back about the good ones and we both have a finely honed taste in the dilfs of the silver screen. where the fuck else am i going to get vital intelligence like this
Tumblr media
furthermore these two are the only people i trust about Classic Movie (tm) Opinions. like, they will tell me if a movie that is very much a Product of its Era (tm) is worth sitting through the things that make it very much a Product of its Era (tm). i haunt the letterboxd activity page to see what they've added to their watchlists
i pay more attention to @morrak's book recs and shove them to the front of my list bc we have the same not-quite-engineer-but-enough-to-be-dangerous kind of brain and literally all of his recs have hit, including the ones where i'm like "ough this is very good but i need to come back to it later". i pay more attention to whatever the fuck @believerindaydreams is up to be we both like the same sort of heavily allusive, love letter to pulp kinds of stories.
my point is not "everyone needs to make more friends and if you don't have a richly layered online friend group of nearly a decade in some cases funneling art to you through the medium of tumblr then you're toast" but like. along with critics, friends' recs and things i found while trying to find friends' recs are a huge driver of the tuesdayposts. people fundamentally want to share the cool new shit they've found. that's why we're all here, blogging

In me, were lives I was never meant to live: Thoughts on Celine Song's Past Lives.
Past Lives (2023) is that cathartic movie.
I've been quite emotionally (and physically) dysfunctional these past few weeks that I could only stomach movies that I have already seen multiple times. Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022), The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012), Interstellar (2014), and now, Past Lives.
Tumblr media
I first watched Past Lives on 23 August this year, nine days after I turned 28. I remember immediately writing a Letterboxd review of the movie while crying. I called it a multiverse movie. It felt like it. "It's a powerful story about past lives, longing, and so many unnoticed in-yuns we experience in life," I wrote. Only this time, after re-watching it 4 months later, it felt like home.
Tumblr media
In a way, I saw myself in Na Young (she now goes by the name Nora, an Americanized version of her Korean name). To borrow words from the movie, Na Young crossed the Pacific Ocean to be in a foreign land and it cost her something.
"Some crossings cost more than others. Some crossings, you pay for with your whole life."
At 28, I know I have sacrificed too many things in my life just to survive. I was a different person then, and when I look at my life, and where I came from, I see the things I have lost in trying to be here. In my poverty-stricken youth, I was a dreamer. They're a stranger now but I know I was that kid. I have been through the worst kinds of shit. And now, there's me me.
I am a 28-year-old nobody who sacrificed their youth and naïveté to become an early-career researcher who lost everything. I would give anything to meet who I was back then again. I know I would.
Tumblr media
Similarly, I also found myself in Hae Sung. When he said, "But the truth I learned here is, you had to leave because you're you. And the reason I liked you is because you're you. And who you are is someone who leaves," I felt that.
I am Hae Sung.
I would very much like to explain why I feel this way in this post, but I don't think I can. I don't think I have the words. All I can say is, yes, I would do what he did, and I would go to New York even though Na Young is with someone else, and yes I would love the man she now loves.
In the movie, Nora grieved her old self, Na Young, when Hae Sung finally left. I know she didn't cry because she loved Hae Sung (she didn't, at least, not in that way); she cried because Hae Sung reminded her of her old self—the twelve-year-old girl she left behind with him in Korea.
Tumblr media
This is their past lives.
And here's a poem I wrote months ago.

part 1 of the from the start series
VIDEO FILES OF MARGO'S CAMERA
2017
"Are you really going to record this?" Oscar said, with a smirk, as he answered his phone.
"Hell yeah, of course! They're going to tell you if we're going to Formula 4 together, damn it!" Margo said, though she couldn't be seen as she was behind the camera, focusing on Oscar very close to his face with a smirk.
Oscar put a finger to his lips for her to be quiet and answered the call to be told that yes, he would be in the British Formula 4 along with Marguerite.
She let out a high-pitched scream and jumped a couple of times before leaving the camera on the table to go hug Oscar with so much force that she almost knocked him over.
"See? I told you, I told you you'd come with me!" she exclaimed, hitting him a little.
"Looks like I still can't get rid of you" he joked, with a smirk before hugging her again.
She widened her smile and then looked at him. "You have to call your mom right now."
"Right!" he jumped and went straight to the phone. He exchanged a few words with his mother and then moved the phone away from his ear, extending it to Margo. "She wants to talk to you."
She laughed and took the phone.
"How are you, Nicole?"
"Fine, fine. I just wanted to congratulate you too for getting into the category, although you already knew it a long time ago," Nicole said, with a sweet voice. Now it was Oscar who had picked up the camera and was focusing on Margo. "I'm annoyed I can't be there with you, but rest assured that both your mother and I will come see you at the races!"
Margo laughed a bit and nodded. "Great, Nicole. Thank you very much, really."
They said goodbye and she returned the phone to Oscar.
"I love your mom so much, Os. I don't understand how such a fantastic and amazing woman gave birth to a dork like you."
Oscar crossed his arms and became completely serious. He went to the fridge in the student flat they were living in at the time in London, while juggling races with the end of the school year. There were Physics and Mathematics papers scattered all over the counter.
"How's the Wednesday exam going?" Margo asked, sitting at the table.
He took out a jug of water and poured two glasses, handing one to Margo.
"I'll probably fail it,"
"Me too," she nodded. "But hey, we're going to be famous drivers, so I don't care about not knowing arithmetic."
They chuckled and Margo noticed that the camera was still focusing on them with the red light on. She grabbed it immediately.
"Are you still recording? Damn it, Oscar, you're going to drain the battery-"
2019
"Oscar Piastriiii is finally here! Formula 3 champion!" Margo shouted from behind the camera. She zoomed in until she was close to Oscar's face, as she used to do. "But smile a bit, come on! You're the damn Formula 3 champion!"
"Wooo!" exclaimed Jezebel Sütten. She, along with Logan Sargeant, had become very good friends with the other two guys, also along with Ollie Bearman and Marta García, with whom they had been coinciding since their karting years.
The four of them were celebrating that Oscar had finished first, with Logan third. Margo had finished sixth and Zel ninth, but they couldn't be happier for their friends. Although there were many more people around, the four of them had secluded themselves on the terrace because none of them were big fans of crowds, although Margo occasionally had bouts of extroversion, as had just happened.
She handed the camera to Zel and grabbed a glass of champagne before drinking it all.
"Oscar! Come dance with me, come on," Margo pulled him a bit and Oscar couldn't refuse.
They danced for a while, but it wasn't until a slow song that Zel decided to focus on them with the camera. Before starting to dance, they looked at each other, expectant that one of them would refuse. They were friends, but were they that close? It turned out they were, because they started dancing. Oscar placed his hand slightly above Margo's waist, so she wouldn't feel uncomfortable. She ended up resting her head on Oscar's shoulder as they swayed.
It could be seen from the camera that they said something to each other, although it was impossible to capture because they were too far away.
2019
"Well, here's a new video blog of our trip to New York," Margo spoke after setting up the camera. "It's our last day in New York, now we're going to Los Angeles. But first! We're going to take a walk around Brooklyn and then we're going to see a musical."
"Hello!" greeted Zel, making her way to the camera. "Logan says they're ready."
"You talk a lot with Logan now" Margo squinted her eyes and grabbed the camera.
"Let's go, come on. Oscar will worry about you later," She handed it back, with a mischievous smile as Margo looked at her angrily.
The camera cut and switched to a scene where Margo placed the camera on some shelf and the four of them posed for the video, which Margo would later edit and take a photo.
2023
Margo had just won her last race, proclaiming herself the winner of that Formula 2 season. She was on the podium and from below her mother was recording her almost on the verge of tears because her girl had finally made it.
She had had an almost perfect season, winning nine races with PREMA Racing. She celebrated the 1-2 she had achieved with Ollie on the Yas Marina podium and went running to find her mother. But just before reaching her, she was asked for an interview.
"Margo, how do you feel about being the first woman to win this championship?" the man asked.
"I'm very, very happy. I still can't believe it. It's been a challenging season, with very good rivals, and I'm very proud to have exceeded all expectations. Thank you ᅳShe made a gesture to keep walking, but the journalist asked her another question.
"It's been a while since we've seen you with Oscar Piastri, do you think you'll celebrate the victory together? Do you think he'll congratulate you?"
Margo stared at him for a few seconds, trying to find some sort of acceptable answer. She had minimal training for interviews, and that question caught her off guard, what did Oscar have to do with her victory? Her agent quickly appeared, taking her away from there and leaving.

Best of: 2022
It’s hard to try and sum up 2022 in any meaningful way aside from saying that, like every other year for the last however many years, it was a lot. And come to think of it, that applies to some of the best things I discovered this year too.
What would it be like to regard Everything Everywhere All at Once without the hype train that followed in its wake, all the way up to this year’s Oscars? Well, let me tell you. Because the experience of watching it in the June of 2022 (not once but twice in the span of two days) remains one of those hyper vivid, ultra real moments of total movie magic. Granted, it’s no longer the Weird Little Indie That Could that it was at the time of its release, but Everything Everywhere is still an astonishing and altogether special accomplishment. As it turned out, there was another film from 2022 that evoked a similar sense of euphoria: Jackass Forever. Which makes sense when you think about it, given that it also traffics in gloriously juvenile antics patched together with deepfelt emotion.
Tumblr media
Now, there’s no appropriate segue from Jackass Forever to Tár that makes the least bit of sense, except perhaps for its totally audacious ending, which left me equally giddy. Everything leading up to it was cold and austere, richly textured and surgically precise, which probably made its ending feel even more surprising: I couldn’t help but laugh, more in amazement than anything else. Months later, I still don’t know exactly what to make of it. All I know is that, quite like Jackass Forever, whatever Todd Field is doing in Tár, is very much my jam (look, there was absolutely no need to compare the two—I just wanted to have them both in the same sentence again).
youtube
A good year for movies, then—but an even better one for television. Like every TV critic out there, I can’t shut up about The Bear. The thing I keep coming back to is its pilot episode’s opening sequence, how it felt like it had found a new language, like punk made television. Everything about it was just *chef’s kiss.* Severance pulled off a similar triumph in making a show that was so uniquely its own thing right out of the gate. There were the mysteries, yes, so many questions, but what it did above all else was thoroughly plumb the implications of its ingenious premise, while making you care deeply about each of its characters and their dilemmas. It goes without saying that I can’t wait for where they go next.
And then there were the shows I discovered last year that were totally out of time. A random Letterboxd review (shoutout to a real one) led me to Nirvanna the Band the Show. Which I’m not even going to try and fail at describing. There’s probably only a handful of people for whom this deeply, deeply weird and wonderful show is for, but if you happen to be one of them, man, you’re in for something special. Speaking of weird and wonderful, I finally got around to watching Nathan For You and, well, I couldn’t stop until I devoured all four seasons. I have nothing remotely original to say about Nathan Fielder that hasn’t been said already, but I will say this: I think the reason everyone that watches it feels weirdly protective of this strange little man is because he is basically our inner child, our shadow manifested on a TV screen (shoutout to Barry Michaels and er, Jung, I guess).
youtube
A Youtube sneaker show and a menswear newsletter: normally these two things would be out of place in a more traditional year end review, but here they sync up nicely. I binged tons of episodes of Full Size Run, the universe’s best sneaker show, during an especially stressful month. But the show was equally fun all year round (waiting for Season 16 as we speak). And I was lucky to discover Blackbird Spyplane, the profoundly blessed and popping menswear newsletter, a totally hilarious, extremely original treat. Make sure to sign up if you’re not already on the global Spyplane community.
And now for some deep thoughts on what these all mean. Just kidding, I’ve refrained from trying to analyse any of this in previous editions, so I won’t start now. But one thing that strikes me is that what this (and previous Years in Review here and here and here) really is, more than anything else, is a catalog of delight. Which is a worthwhile project, I think. And something worth tending to, even almost half a year into 2023, as it were. If there’s one thing I can guarantee, it’s that if you do see one of these again, it will be reliably late, sometime deep into 2024. You have my word.

The one throughline from my vaguely defined attempt to watch every Nic Cage movie that has an average rating above 3 on letterboxd, a star rating of 3 or higher by that Age of Cage book guy, or recommended as one of his best performances by the Filmspotting guys (or tbh just "is available free on some service I already have"), is that there are SO MANY, a statistically highly improbable quantity, Cage movies to which my primary reaction, even before "good or bad" or "enjoyed watching or did not enjoy watching," is "that movie was extremely weird and did not quite feel like a real movie. Who authorized this production? Who said 'yes I'll fund that'? Did all the other people in these scenes understand how strange this was?"

Diary of a Horror Bufff 8.30.22
Ugh two days left bitches two days left.
Also I woke up at like 1 today (in the afternoon) so i feel riproaring to get some stuff done in the meantime what this means is that I'm gonna do a small chore between each of the movies we're watching and since I already sent off a work email I get a freebie ok les go.
Tumblr media
Creepshow 2 (1987) dir. Michael Gornick
ok so I speant a bunch of time talking about this on letterboxd so check it out there but the main gist is that while its not as good as the original I still had fun.
youtube
Chicken of the Dead (2019) dir. Julien David
A beautiful story about a libertarian telling big goverment to go fuck themselves and they restrictive ideas of "how much food should be in foodstuff" and "not turning people into chicken zombies".
vimeo
Irradiation (2021) dir. Sava Zivkovic
ok so this animation style is insane, like is this what console video games are like. I'm used to people looking like this.
Tumblr media
homegirl with that bullet bra.
this is basically like a full ass video game teaser trailer where this russian scientist treks through a burnt irradiated forest to look at this eldritch anomily. I can't even explain further this is like AAA grade like sci-fi animation. this shit could have a whole ass TV show I am obsessed just fucking watch it.
youtube
Satan At Play (1907) dir. Segundo de Chomón
I mean we love a synopsis that starts with UWU "satan was bored"
so this is less narrative then the letterboxd discription implies. This is essentially more like a magic show Satan is bored and so in a revue style he pulls off a series of illisions more daring then the last which even like a hundred years later the effects are spectacular.
Bottom line is that Segudo is a bad bitch.
youtube
The Man with Wax Faces (1914) dir. Maurice Tourneur
ok so this would have proabbaly been a lot more impactful if I spoke french since this film uses a lot, and I mean a lot, of intertitles. Bonus points is that it really fun to read french in an absolutely awful french accent.
The plot for this is pretty basis some dude like you bro I double dog dare you to spend some time in the wax museum oh I'm sorry, *said in a horrible french accent* un musee de figures de cire. The dudes goes insane apparently and proceeds to murder his friend when he comes into the musee de figures de cire to play a silly little prank on him.
youtube
Vengeance (pomsta) (1968) dir. Jirí Brdecka
not to be confused with Vengeance(1968), the western staring Richard Harrison, (the 60s actor not the guy who runs pawn stars.)
Tumblr media
ugh this bussy. fuck it up king
ok so this shit has the same vibe as one of those ted ed riddles videos. you know which ones I'm talking about.
Tumblr media
this was the closest gif I could find.
basically some dude being a little beta male cuck and writing a poem to his girfriend when this CHAD comes over and is like you bitch ditch this looser I'm good at fighting and shes like bet. So he goes to his upstairs neighbor whose a witch or something and shenanigans, (faustian deals and idle hands) ensue.
also pretty much every chick in this just straight up got her titties out like shes lady freedom
youtube
Isabelle Aux Dombes (1951) dir Maurice Pialat
ok so it turns out "The Dombes" is a place in france thats basically pasture land that has a bunch of shallow ponds.
this movie is sort of non narrative or at least surreal. Essentially the character takes a trip to The Dombes, and just sort of gets lost. the imagedry gets more explicitly about death until the character literally dresses up as Chiron and crosses one of the ponds to look at a gravestone with Isabelle name on it.
Tumblr media
gives me this energy.
youtube
Ghost Town Frolics (1938) dir. Lester Kline
ok so this is a fun silly little cartoon. this was part of the New Universal and Walter Lantz productions cartoons. Yes Walter Lantz as the guy who did Woody Woodpecker. No Idea who Lester Kline is and the information I have on him is a bit limited. Also the characters for this are the simple simians, who are apparently chipanzee siblings. Normally I find monkeys to be kinda freaky but these ones are cute.
Tumblr media
bitch I got good reason
this was cute though it had some fun gags and the characters were fun.
youtube
Krazy Spooks (1933) dir. Manny Gould, Ben Harrison
so apparently there are like four directors in this but I'm only including the first two.
so this one featues Krazy Kat who was made by Charles Mintz and produced by Columbia Pictures.
So this is kinda just another random ass huanted house cartoon. Theres some sight gags, some bedsheets ghosts and this one has a gorilla which is actually pretty new. some murder on rue morgue realness I guess.
youtube
The Binding Box CRYPT TV (2017) dir. Ramsey Attia
ok so this one was fun. Basically this girl gets a mysterious box in the mail and UWU its a creppy clown in a jack in the box. so yeah obvious spooky thing is spooky. This is just a fun time and we love the aestetic.
I think I have one more video left for today so lets vibe.
youtube
Pregnancy Test (2016) dir. Fergal Costello
ok I haven't seen this in years but I fucking love this. basically a women takes a Prenancy test and it comes back as "having the antichrist"??? oh also its a contraception PSA so I mean we have to stan.
anyway bitches thats pretty much it for today I think I won't be doing any blogging tomorrow but I will finish off the challenge.
anyway whores stay tuned cause your getting a full ass video next time.

BRIAR LANGFORD’S PHOTO ALBUM: OSBORN.
"harry, how could i have known you had feelings for me? when we met, you had already reached second base with cindy moon, suzan yang, and liz toomes!" "that's unfair."
our story starts several years ago, during briar and harry’s freshman year. briar was known for having a tight knit, very small group of friends she was close to, but when harry transferred to midtown, she quickly made an exception and befriended the eccentric boy.
she knew who he was—after all, he and his family were in the news practically every day. all news outlets in the city had a massive field day when they had caught word of norman osborn forcing his son to transfer from his private academy school upstate to midtown high as a way of punishing his son for another squabble that blew out of proportion. however, unlike the crowds that swarmed him when he arrived, briar didn’t care for his fame. she paid no mind to the rumors, scandals, or wealth. no, when briar and harry met, it was purely by coincidence.
"not to mention that french girl who came to visit you for new years this year, what was her name? colette? eloise? charlotte? valerie?" "yes.. but you make it sound like i'm a whore. i can promise you the way i've felt for you since freshman year is different.”
after harry’s exhausting first day at a public school, he was in dire need of an escape. the day wasn’t even over—technically, it was still 7th period—but today was traumatizing to say the least. he needed to get away. he fled from his spanish class to the bleachers by the football field, and it was under there where he ran into the girl, who’d also been hiding from coach wilson. after that, it was history.
harry was absolutely smitten with the curly haired girl. even as he watched her fall in love with an undeserving boy named peter parker, his admiration for her remained strong. and when the two return to earth after disappearing for five mysterious years, harry osborn has faith that the two will find their way into each other’s hearts. perhaps it was this strange occurrence nicknamed “the blip” that’d bring them together and finally allow harry to call briar—the girl he’d been swooning over this whole time—his.
"at any point in our friendship, did you have feelings for me too? like at all? no, that doesn't—what i mean is that, i guess, if you weren't with peter—and he hadn't asked you out—do you think you would've said yes to me if i'd asked you out?"

Heart Beat.
Minari’s film composer Emile Mosseri (also responsible for the Kajillionaire and The Last Black Man in San Francisco scores) tells Ella Kemp about his A24 favorites, Nicholas Britell’s friendship and the boldest Paul McCartney needle drop in movie history.
What do you think a broken heart sounds like? How about a warm, beating one? It’s something that Emile Mosseri has been thinking about for a while now. The past two years have seen him complete a hat-trick of beguiling, transporting scores for Plan B movies: Joe Talbot and Jimmie Fails’ The Last Black Man in San Francisco, Miranda July’s Kajillionaire and now, the film voted the best of 2020 by our community, Lee Isaac Chung’s Minari.
What binds these scores together is a delicacy that knows when to break free and turn into something altogether spectacular. But on Minari in particular, Mosseri is in full bloom, working for the first time in a way he’d always dreamed about. While The Last Black Man in San Francisco saw him compose to a loose edit, and on Kajillionaire he worked to a locked cut, Chung gave him the freedom to write music directly to Minari’s script. “It was a dream to work this way on Minari,” Mosseri says. “It was so beautifully written and so visceral.”

‘Minari’ composer Emile Mosseri.
Minari is an intimate portrait of a Korean family making their way in rural America, and the composer was interested in “trying to figure out musically how you can feel connected to your deepest childhood memories”. These memories belong, in the film, to David—a tiny king played by eight-year-old Alan Kim—as he comes to terms with his new life on a small farm in Arkansas, as his family strives for their own version of the American Dream.
The Yi family is made up of David and his sister Anne (Noel Kate Cho), their parents Monica (Han Ye-ri) and Jacob (Steven Yeun) and their grandmother, Soon-ja (Youn Yuh-jung). It’s a personal story for Chung, one that Mosseri felt honored to be a part of. “It’s a very intimate story with these five characters, which takes place mostly in this small mobile home—but emotionally, it’s very epic.”
There was something about Chung that had caught Mosseri’s attention early on. “I had met him at the LA premiere of Last Black Man,” Mosseri says, “and I sent him the Kajillionaire score.” Mosseri was already familiar with the filmmaker’s work: “His first film, Munyurangabo, is incredible.” He calls Chung “very open, but also sly” in terms of hitting the right notes and “gently steering the ship”. The partnership between composer and director was about working on “a more emotional level,” Mosseri says. “There was never any talk about what we wanted stylistically.”

The ‘Minari’ ensemble cast.
The result is a film graced with music at once lush and raw, grandiose and vulnerable. Mosseri is keenly aware of these nuances, and always made sure to walk the tonal tightrope in the writing process. “There aren’t sad cues and hopeful cues,” he explains. “Every cue has both feelings. Each musical moment dips in and out of the hopefulness and joy of a family, and then the pain and frustration and dissonance that they hold.”
The way Mosseri’s music swells and flows often feels intangible, magical, even—which comes more from knowing what to avoid, rather than acting with too much forced intention. On his first film, Mosseri brought brass and strings to the streets of San Francisco, and with Miranda July, he worked old Hollywood glamor into the concrete blocks of Los Angeles. Here, we twirl through the tall grass as gentle acoustic guitars and elegant string sections sigh and sway, while the Yi family work through their growing pains.
“We didn’t want to hear Korean music when you see Korean characters, and we didn’t want twangy music when you see an American farm,” Mosseri explains. “We wanted to come at it from the side somehow, in some way that’s unexpected.” ‘Rain’, his collaboration with Minari star Han Ye-ri, which features on the official soundtrack, encapsulates this juxtaposition. It’s an epic lullaby of sorts; Han sings in Korean to a gentle guitar; a pleasing swell of synths climbs alongside her voice. The effect on the listener is as if liquid love is trickling from every vein. “I wanted this score to feel like it had a warm, beating heart.”

Two of your three feature films to date have been released by A24, and so we must ask: what are your favorite A24 film scores? Emile Mosseri: Three come to mind. First of all, Anna Meredith’s score for Eighth Grade. It’s so adventurous and unexpected and fresh and just brilliant. It’s so pure and out-there. It also does this impossible thing of being hip and exciting and deep, but also hilarious. The pool-party scene fucking kills me.
Then there’s Under the Skin by Mica Levi. I remember seeing that at the Nighthawk theater in Brooklyn and feeling like it was the best score I’d heard in as long as I could remember.
And then of course, Moonlight. That film got under my skin in a way I didn’t see coming. I saw it by myself in a theater, after hearing all the hype for months and months. When a movie has that much hype you can get a bit cynical and it can distract you, so I went in a bit guarded, but I left the film destroyed. For weeks and weeks it resonated with me in a way that was so profound, and a large part of that is due to Nick [Britell]’s music. And the film is just perfection.

Scarlett Johansson in ‘Under the Skin’ (2013), scored by Mica Levi.
You’ve been described as Nicholas Britell’s protégé more than once… It’s funny, I think that came from me being a fan of his and saying nice things about his music. I met him at Sundance two years ago when Last Black Man was premiering. I went with my wife and my brother and I was so excited, I’d been waiting for this moment for so long. We walked in and Nick and Barry [Jenkins] were walking in behind [us]. And there was also Boots Riley, Kamasi Washington… all these people I looked up to. I hadn’t considered that I would see this film in the room with them, and it was the first time I was hearing the final mix and just agonizing.
Nick was incredibly generous and said great things about the score and was super encouraging, and he became a friend and mentor. But I’ve never studied with him or worked with him. Although, if you’re a fan of somebody’s work, you’re a student of any of these composers that you admire. Anything you watch and listen to, you absorb.
What was the first film that made you want to be a composer? It was Edward Scissorhands. Danny Elfman’s score was the first one that made me realize that this was a job. I’m always attracted to big, romantic melodies, and over-the-top sweeping stuff—but done tastefully. In that score, he sets the high-water mark for me. It’s so unapologetically romantic.
And then there are other obvious ones like The Godfather. It’s maybe a dorky choice because it’s the most famous movie ever, but it really is the best. And that got me into Nino Rota, and from there I found [Federico] Fellini and all these movies through Nino, the composer. And then I got really into the score for La Dolce Vita and more movies that he’d written for, which are so beautiful.
Tumblr media
The ‘Edward Scissorhands’ (1990) score was an early inspiration for Mosseri.
Which films, new to you, blew you away in 2020? Take Shelter by Jeff Nichols blew me away. It unfolded in a way that was intoxicating and really exciting, and it just really stuck with me.
What’s been your favorite needle drop on screen this year? Aside from Devonté Hynes’ score being stunning, there’s an amazing piece of music placed in an episode of Luca Guadagnino’s We Are Who We Are. They use a Paul McCartney song called ‘Let Em In’, and they dropped it in this incredibly tasteful but unexpected way, in a really dark, emotionally loaded scene. It worked in such a beautiful and graceful way. It’s because it’s the most cheery McCartney, it’s full-blown upbeat and poppy McCartney. And this is the darkest-of-the-dark human pain, and it lands in this way that is such a bold choice, such a powerful move.
What should people listen to after watching Minari? One record I’ve been listening to a lot recently is Jeff Tweedy’s Love is the King. It could be a good companion to Minari. I’m a huge fan of his and it’s a gorgeous record. It’s very stripped-down and emotionally raw, and it’s both hopeful and heartbreaking.
Which filmmakers would you love to work with next? I’m always afraid to answer this question because there are so many filmmakers I admire. There are filmmakers I grew up with loving their films—working with Miranda was that for me. Spike Jonze or Yorgos Lanthimos are directors in her world that I also love and would love to work with. But there’s so many others. Derek Cianfrance is amazing and he works with different composers. I love his choice of collaborators musically. I love that he used the late great Harold Budd to do his shows [including I Know This Much is True], and then Mike Patton, and Grizzly Bear… the music is always incredible in his projects, but he doesn’t have a go-to person. His films are so heartbreaking and powerful and really, really raw. He’s fearless.
I feel very lucky that I’ve worked on these three films which are all very much like somebody’s ripping their heart out and putting it on the screen. I feel like Derek Cianfrance does that in his films too, in this unapologetic, super-vulnerable way of just ripping his soul out and putting it out for everyone to see. It’s incredibly appealing to find those projects, because they’re really rare.

I'm on your blog most days and I've always wanted to ask but am too shy and you've probably answered this at some point but I was wondering if you didn't mind sharing your top 5 fav films and why? Or maybe some of the best directors and why you love them? You can ignore this if you want. Obviously NO pressure
hiiii ! oh my goodness, first of all: this is so sweet of you to come by and that you look at my blog aw 🥺💓 and of course i can share some of my fav movies! please, don’t hesitate to ask me, i could go on and onnnn about them!!! :D
i post (rb) way more movies on my film blog: @screenwrite if you aren’t following already too :)) + i don’t think i’ve ever posted my letterboxd on here but you can follow me if you’d like to see my reviews !
as for my favorites: they always change but i have a tag for some that i especially love that i’ll link here ! i made a different top 5 in this ask a while ago, but i have a full new answer under the cut hehe ✨ (it’s...long ajfakdks)
fav films:
so some of my all-time fav classics are Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Dead Poets Society — i just love and relate to the characters of Cameron Frye and Neil Perry (respectively) so much. and they really feel like teen movies that just make sense, you know? i just could watch these two films over and over and never get sick of them 💓
Miss Stevens — this movie.....wow. yes, it has Timothée Chalamet so ofc i love it, but honestly the entire movie is just subtly brilliant. the writing, the performances, the moments of magic and the raw, real characters and stories they tell. absolutely touching and incredible, if you are to watch anything from this list i would say this one 🥺
these two probably come as no surprise: Lady Bird and Frances Ha — they were both written by Greta Gerwig and in my opinion are some of the greatest screenplays ahhh i’ve read the one for LB and some of her adaption of Little Women, and as a(n aspiring) screenwriter myself, her way with words in the medium is just sublime. and the two films are about not really knowing how you fit into the world, but knowing exactly who you are and not changing that for anything. i can quote both of these from start to finish too ajcjfksk
also not surprising are prob Rise of The Guardians and Coraline. my fav animated films, they are just so much fun and make me Feel something i can’t describe, are beautifully made, and keep me in a dreamy state after watching ✨
one of my recent favs!!! is Teen Spirit (2018) dir. Max Minghella — it is just one of those movies that could have been a basic and boring take on the story of an upcoming musician, but it felt so fresh and new, and the music and cinematography was AMAZING i absolutely love it, it’s just my perfect kind of movie!! haha
fav directors:
some badass wonderful talented amazing female directors: Augustine Frizzell, Crystal Moselle, Ava DuVernay, Julia Hart, Lulu Wang, Desiree Akhavan !!!! i know i’m missing so many more ahh but!
Olivier Assayas has just this...calming but haunting vibe to his films? it’s hard to describe, but it just pulls you in so easily (Clouds of Sils Maria, Personal Shopper)
Yorgos Lanthimos. his films are just...mind blowing. eerie and out there, but something so familiar and close at the center. absolutely must see The Lobster and The Favourite !
David Fincher does a lot of dramas/mysteries and has a unique touch to all his films that are probably too dark too see anything in them anvjdks (The Social Network, Gone Girl, Fight Club, etc.)
Drake Doremus is (i think i’ve said this before lol) the king of heartbreak films. he’s not afraid to show the ugly side of relationships and how love always prevails in the end. i would recommend Like Crazy and Equals !
Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners, Blade Runner 2049) + Nicholas Winding Refn (Drive, The Neon Demon) have similar styles that i really dig. they are both quite visually striking and have lots of suspense with great pay off. Refn has more of a colorful eye and it’s refreshing and super cool !!
i feel like a bit of a fake cinephile when i say i haven’t seen many Agnès Varda, Mia Hansen-Løve, and Claire Denis films, but i think they are amazing filmmakers and really admire their craft and can’t wait to dive in to more of their films !
(if you read this far: hi thank you for indulging me, if you ever want to talk about these or want to share your favorites pls feel free i would LOVE that!!! 🥺💕)
