Ok, so I've spent a lot of time wondering why modern AU Zhu and Ouyang would be friends, since the "we're alike" thread of fate would probably not be a thing in a modern setting where its way easier to find other queer people that DONT want you dead. In a modern AU Zhu would have Options, she wouldn't have to be stuck with Ouyang. Especially since mine is set in New York City. But then, I realized there is one particular queer rite of passage that would both be hilarious and would explain why Zhu bothers sticking around Ouyang.
I believe that it is a quintessential experience for a queer teenager to encounter an older queer person and immediately imprint upon them. They are now Your person, and nothing they say will convince you otherwise.
Imagine, if you will then, that you are a tired (and very broke) first year university student who has haplessly wandered into an empty coffeeshop. You've been unable to find a job yet, and you have far too much homework for it only been two weeks into the semester, so upon finding a cheap place that's open late you plant yourself down and begin to grond through your workload. You don't notice the eyes on you as you work, and you only realize you're being watched when the cashier/barista brings you another drink. You try to decline (because of the aforementioned No Money), but the teenager only smiles deviously and says the coffee is on the house. You have a vague inkling of dread, but are too broke to refuse. By the time you realize what has happened, it's too late and Zhu has already offered you a job. You can't say no. You are now doomed to spend the next four years at the whim of an annoying 14 year old (zhu is 16 actually) that has decided that you, as a slightly older queer person, are Their person now actually.

one of my favourite character relationship dynamics, platonic romantic or anything, is when two characters are absolutely the bestest of best friends and when one is hurt or something the other will scream and cry and wail and explode and when the other is in danger then the first one will go on some kind of silent terminator-esque rampage about it. besties (do no separate)

My Favorite ii Character is Suitcase So You KNOW I Have an Opinion on Balloon and Nickel. In Fact, I Kind of Hate Them!
In S2 I Actually Do Really Like Nickel, I Think His Pure Horribleness is Pretty Entertaining and He's an Effective Antagonist. I Get a Kick Outta the Lil Fucker. Balloon in S2 is More Blah for Me, I'm Not Too Interested in His Own Pain When Suitcase is Infinitely More Interesting But He's Not Offensive, Just Kind of a Lackluster Prop to Someone Else.
When S3 Started and I Saw They Were Goin In for Nickel and Balloon Drama Again I Was Lil Interested. Unlike Other Returning Characters There Was Still Mineable Tension There Cuz the Conclusion of That Arc Was More Suitcase's Than Anyone Else's. and Also I Just Like Nickel.
They Have Since Become One of the Things I Dislike the Most About S3. I'd Go as Far as to Say Balloon Is the Most Thorough Character Assassination That Season's Produced. Granted It Is the Most Interesting He's Ever Been, But Him Constantly Turning a Blind Eye to Nickel Not Changing is so Frustrating. Further Still, When He Eliminates TK and Says That "I Don't Want to Play the Game With Backstabbing and Betrayal" Spiel While Allying With Nickel is an Active Insult to Suitcase. Him Calling Her Putting Her Entire Time on the Line for Him "Backstabbing and Betrayal"? Man I Can't Stand You!
Nickel I Still Think is Entertaining But Now Its Less Because I Like Him and More Getting a Kick Out of How the Writers Seem Unaware How Much He Hasn't Changed and How He's Still Just Blindly Horrible to Most People (Usually Women Honestly. His Pattern of Being Unrelentingly Horrible to Suitcase, TK, and Clover While Mostly Just Being a Bit of a Dick to Everyone Else is Like. Ok). Clover Giving Him Her Luck Powers After He Screamed At Her Till She Cried Was Very Much a "Lol Lmao" Moment for Me.
Also the Fact the Show is Definitely Doing Some Weird Shipbait With Them is Like. Whatever. Fine. Ok. Sure. I Don't Care Anymore.

#.flow#okay so here's what i theorize their relationship was#someone sees the two goes are you dating smile goes yeah <3 sabi goes he's my henchman#however smile is joking and sabi is completely serious. smile considers sabi his best friend. sabi...only does after they stop being friends#sabi was very isolated from smile. in the sense that she didn't really consider his presence#smile who was clingy because he had a buddy then said not so nice stuff to get a rise out of her#which was the only way he got sabi to react to anytying he was saying#towards the end of their friendship though the tables turned#sabi became more open. talking about her chronic illnesses and fears. while smile often brushed her off or straight up ignored her#eventually smile meets up with sabi to tell her he wants to stop his gang lifr. he doesn't want to endanger his sister anymore#sabi gets angry at him. they argue. at one point smile mentions a triggering thing she'd revealed to him in the past as a retort#they end up physically fighting. sabi wins in the end. but it certainly doesn't feel like it#essentially it was a very toxic friendship. both of them were going through stuff and didn't know how to cope.#they did really care about each other at one point. but presently sabi both resents smile and regrets her actions.#next time on dotflow theories oreko and sabitsuki. tune in the next tuesday the 27th
