okay so just so we’re all on the same page, here’s a general recap of everything.

in August, while on my way to work, I was involved in a car wreck and broke my right wrist. I had surgery and I was on medical leave for about three months.

In November, my doctor said that I could return to work on light duty. No lifting over a certain amount, no pushing or pulling heavy machinery; I took those restrictions to my store, and they were more than willing to accommodate me. I was placed at self-checkouts, where I was not required to lift anything at all.

Due to being on medical leave, my employee profile was temporarily archived, basically to hold my job so I couldn’t be fired during that span of time. The company I work for does not directly handle medical leaves; they have hired a third-party company, and I had to contact this third-party company to reactivate my employee status. When I finally got in touch with them, I was told that I would immediately be placed on a second medical leave, because the doctor had not cleared me to lift ten pounds yet, and all employees must meet that required minimum.

Nobody had informed me that a requirement existed. Not our store’s HR representative, not the store manager, not any of the third party’s employees that I’d been speaking with in the months since my injury. Since this company forcibly placed me back on medical leave, I was not legally allowed to work. I was also unable to get my work restrictions updated over the phone with my doctor, and had to wait until my next appointment, which was this past Friday [12/3].

At my recent appointment, I explained my situation to my doctor, and she updated my restrictions to meet that ten-pound requirement. This third-party company does not work weekends, so I had to wait until this current week to send over my updated restrictions. I sent those over on Tuesday, gave them 24 hours to process the information, and today went back to the store I work at to give them a copy of these updated restrictions.

Upon arriving at my job today, I was informed that I’d been archived again, which is about what I expected. I was on another leave, so of course they had to freeze my account. It’s just procedure. So I called the third-party company again to inform them that I have updated restrictions and need to be reactivated in the system.

Only to be informed that I need to have a start date and end date for my work restrictions, listed on the physical work notice that I have to hand in to both companies. Again, this is vital information that was absolutely not given to me beforehand. Nobody mentioned it. The representative I spoke with today is the same one who forced me back on leave, she claims to be the one in charge of these situations, and she never informed me of this requirement. this company’s only purpose is to handle things like medical leave; they absolutely know what information I will need to provide them in order to return to work, and absolutely nobody has given me that information. I meet one requirement only to be told of another that was never mentioned beforehand.

I stopped by my doctor’s office today to see if they could simply add dates to my existing work notice. For legal and safety reasons, they cannot update my work notice until my next appointment and evaluation. My next appointment is December 30th. There is no way I can be seen earlier than that. If I stay with this group, I will not be able to return until after the first of the year. I have not been paid since August.

The company I work for has been willing to accommodate me. I have updated restrictions that match employee requirements. My computer is effectively unusable and needs to be replaced. I have to pay my student loans. I have been attempting to return to work for nearly two months. But this third-party company has basically refused to cooperate, so I’m just. going to quit!! this job isn’t worth all this hassle. Even while recovering from this injury, I can definitely go find another job that’ll work with me right away. I was really wanting to leave this job under good circumstances, but I also can’t go unpaid for so long. I’m just done with this.

Wow... been far too long, almost feels like, ancient times.

So I had planned on returning earlier, only, 2020 is being a bitch and I kept getting delayed. By one thing after the other.

I had officially moved into the repaired apartment at the end July and was going to use August to finish clearing out my sister’s stuff to make room for my own and then return in September. Only, that obviously didn’t happen. I had a health scare in the beginning of the month; a week-long migraine or multiple migraines, I don’t know to be honest the week was a blur after the second day. But it got to a point where my vision had been impaired, nearly passed out, and the pain was so horrible that I literally began to throw up. The following week was spent on getting tested and then forced to do a 24 hr blood pressure test. My doctor chalked it up to high blood pressure in the end, though refused to look at other options, but what do I know, I’m not a doctor.

So September was shot, as I was exhausted after that ordeal and thought, ok, I’ll start in October. That was when my car decided it was the time it was going to die. I pretty much spent all of October scrambling for getting a new one while having to borrow my dad’s car for 3 weeks. Meetings with the bank, my financial advisor (which is very common in Germany to help everyone with their finances and insurances), mechanic to decide whether I spend the money to fix my car or buy a new one. Ultimately, I bought a new one. Which I love, even though it’s a stick and not automatic. So with October nearly over, I thought, hey, I’ll start again in November.

November 2020, quite possibly the month that broke the world and history, also the month when I got laid off. As well as finally sign a contract with my landlord to rent from him (yes he basically blew me off for two+ months, and it took to me HINTING about not paying rent to get him to come to me, only to hear that he doesn’t believe in Covid like it’s an option). I was told in, not so direct terms, that due to Covid, the company wouldn’t meet it’s projected numbers by the end of 2020, and the higher ups decided to reduce the commission number significantly lower for the next year, forcing them to downsize. Meaning, other than myself, many were let go. And they still plan on sifting through their workers until Christmas.

Thankfully, I quickly found a new job, started today, and I still plan on starting up once again. I hope to start again by this weekend. Hopefully.

So yeah, been hectic, outside of Covid. I would also like to apologize for my lack of activity and for being away for so long. None of this was planned, and I was forced to literally fly by the seat of my pants for the last two months leaving me exhausted. I hope everyone is safe, healthy, and enjoying the turn that took place as of last week. Let’s just hope everyone can benefit from the next President more so than the few that benefited from the last.

Lockdown Diary Part 6

A personal account during the lockdown in the UK due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

23/03/2020 8:30pm Boris Johnson, UK Prime Minister, gives a live address to the nation to, effectively, put the country on lockdown to stem the spread of the deadly coronavirus strain, Covid-19.

Many of us have been self-isolating for days but this latest development within the UK in reaction to the pandemic feels very serious and very scary. I decided to keep a simple diary and where better but online.

Day 151: Great hour or so last night around Foggy’s. When I got home I watched World War Z and some stand up by Nate Bargatze and drank and smoked loads. Today, I got up just before 2pm and felt soooo unmotivated. I was going to have a day of doing fuck all but had a change of heart around 7pm so did my stair climb then walked for over an hour (7km) and got home at 9:30pm!

Day 152: Typing on day 153. I popped up and saw Foggy last night. One of the reasons was I wanted to take him a beer to say thanks for looking over my mitigation statement for my impending court hearing for speeding. He liked what i wrote but has given me some key amendments. Basically free solictor advice and I am very grateful. While there he hit me with the news that Ham’s sister, Preeya, has died (last Friday 14th August) from Covid 19. To say i was gobsmacked is an understatement. She was 49. The family could only talk to her over a loud speaker and had to say good bye that way as her life support was swithced off. Fucking hell, it’s terrible. And, what makes it worse, is how complacent I have become about the disease while it’s causing so much tragedy. As I said to Foggy, it’s important to renew our efforts in combatting this disease so that Preeya’s death at least means we learn. I also feel guilty for not realising that many people have passed like this - just because I (sort of) knew Preeya doesn’t mean I shouldn’t feel any less sorry for the dozens of people dying and many more affected everyday. My emotions are in turmoil and yet I’m not directly affected.

Day 153: Typing this on day 154. Gone midday before I woke up. Beers in the evening and watched Den of Thieves. Great film.

Day 154: Woke up at 2:37 pm FFS. Just done a walk and I feel like shit (booze induced).

Day 155: Went to bed at about 4am yesterday but was up at 10am today so, usual Monday correction of sleep patterns. Two long walks today plus a little housekeeping on photos, sharing to the Oundle chatter group, so, quite constructive. Hoir chat with dad plus a chat with a recruitment agemt about a helpdesk manager role in Peterborough.

Day 156: Typing on Day 157. I saw Karen sitting with TTP (and two others I couldn’t make out) at the T&K on my second walk. Why does that piss me off so much? I am being like Jack in Midnight Run. I need to let go.

I am also getting wound up with Tumblr - I can only make entries on this diary blog on the PC - when I try on the Android or Apple apps, they pop up with ‘post too long’. Trying getting info from Tumblr’s online help on that though - fucking not happening. I think I might move this to a Google Blog...it’s not like anyone else reads it. I’m not sure I’d want that - it’s far more a private diary now rather than the cute ‘blog’ idea it started out as. It is now a disciplinary exercise more than anything.

Day 158: Feeling less sorry for myself now. It’s 10pm and I am having a midweek beer as I wait for tea to cook.

Day 159: Decided I will split this diary into 30 day sections to appease Tumblr. My second walk today was at 8pm ‘cos it was pissing down from about 4pm ‘til 7:30pm...very dark and so wet. Home by 9.15pm.

Day 160: I went shopping in Corby (Tesco and Asda) - I only really went so I could get blue eggs. £75 on booze! I was going up to Fog’s tonight but at around 6pm it started to piss down. So, I shall drink at home. It’s 9.15pm, I think it’s going to get messy.

Day 161: Not sure when I wnet to bed last night but I didn’t get up until 2pm. Nice long walk (9km) in the rain!

Banners and Sam G went to London to have a few with Andy P. I’m a little flabbergasted, it’s like there’s no Covid19 all a sudden.

Day 162: Bank holiday Sunday so I am having a beer or two. Tea’s cooking, gonna watch The Accountant on BBC1 at 10.30pm. Today I got up at 1.55pm and managed to have a shower and be downstairs to see the start of the Belgian GP. Hamilton won, pretty easily. I then did my stair climb and a 9.8km (6 mile) walk.

Last night I watched a rather quirky, entertaining comic horror film called Ready or Not and then Ricky Gervais - Fame. That’s the tour I saw him live after seeing Henman’s final tennis match at the Davis Cup at Wimbledon. Bloody funny - the recording could even be the show Karen and I were at. Bed at around 5am, hence not egtting up ‘til way past midday!

Day 163: Bank Holiday Monday, just like a Sunday. I am making this entry on my phone as I'm now able to due to breaking up the diary blog into 30 day sections.

Molly's Game, a film I've tried to rewatch several times but it's never been free, is on BBC2 tonight. I'm recording it right now but actually watching Seinfeld from the start on All4. The first couple of episodes are a bit ropey if truth be told. Luckily, I know it improves.

Day 164: Managed to get hold of Michelle via her daughter Daisy to place a nice big order for C. Just as well ‘cos Tim’s ignoring me!

Rang and spoke with Barry Haddon today to check he’s OK.

Day 165: Picked up C from Michelle’s in Yarwell. While there I was mauled by her over friendly Staffordshirebull terrier getting bit on the thigh. Twice in six months I’ve been bitten by dogs.

Karen WhatsApp’d to see if I’d seen Miley Cyrus on the Live Lounge!

Day 166: Forgot to say that yesterday, I also bumped into and chatted with Pete Gilder. We mainly talked about (getting caught) speeding.

Today I did over 22k steps and I am fucked. 

I replied to an email from Shirley at work HR. After the furloughed staff call on Thursday, which I didn’t attend, they want us to cash in some (more) hoilday, which is fine by me, but I have also asked if we are any clearer as to what happens on 1st October, when the rentention scheme ends. I await her reply.

Day 167: Another 20k stpes today. Just 24k needed to have completed 1m steps since the start of July.

It’s Friday, about 9.45pm. I’m going to watch Molly’s Game and have a few beers.

Day 168: Got up at just before 2pm. It’s now 10.15pm and I am just having my first beer, Today was a lazyish day, completed 12k steps.

Day 169: Completed the 1m steps with 24 days to spare. Woohoo. Now, I am unsure whether to reduce the walking I have got so used to doing? I think I might keep up an average of 11k steps a day which is all I would have needed to accomplish to reack 1m in 3 months.

I’m pleased I did it today since I :went to bed a nearly 5am this morning!

Day 170: Actually typing this on day 171. Feels weird having done the 1m steps, almost like I’ve nothing to do. However, I am of course going to keep walking but not quite as hard/much. I did feel liek I was walking myself into the ground all in the name of finishiong the task ASAP. So, today I only had one walk, did 11,5k.

Yesterday’s Italian GP was a cracker. Hamilton had a penalty and ikt ended up with Gasly winning. Full of incident including a red flag so the race ‘restarted’.

Day 171: I have decided to press on with the walking - not quite so urgently as before - to see what I can achieve steps-wise in 3 months. So, today, an unusually hot day for September, I did 18k steps plus cleaned the bathroom, hoovered my room and stairs and hallway. I am fucked!

Today I have bought a set of smart scales and a new pair of Skechers. The Skechers were almost free (£69 reduced to £30ish which I had in Paypal) and the scales were £20. Still, I shouldn’t. I don’t know what will happen at the end of October when the CJRS ends plus I don’t know what punsihment will be dished out, any day now, for the speeding offence! Fuck it!

Day 172: An eventful day. Boris has restricted gatherings to no more than 6 people and will use ‘Covid Marshalls’ to police this. It’s causing a stir amongst the online community. I have set up accounts with Gurushots and Picfair to showcase my snaps. The latter offers the opportunity to sell them. I watched Anchorman 2. It was pretty good. I also postd on the Oundle chatter group about walking in front of a car the other day - the driver, a yound lady, was enchanting the way she just smiled and let me pass - I used it as an opportunity to ask about George Higgins saving a child from near death at the hands of a lorry, the post about which has disappeared.

Day 173: Lots have seen my post re: my car incident but the bait hasn’t been taken.

Sarah Haines made a nice comment about my photo posts on the Oundle Chatter group also saying that she doesn’t know me but, it turns out she does. She is James Watson’s ex from when I first moved to Oundle so we caught up on Messenger.

Rachel Harris posted a meme slating Boris about the fact we were all encouraged to go out and about (inclding the Eat Out to Help Out scheme) and now we are being sent back to ‘our room’. Some of the comments continue to slate the government. I couldn’t resist commenting that, had the royal ‘we’ maintined social distancing and remembered there’s a fucking pandemic, perhaps we might not be under impending severe lockdown, as it now looks like. I also mentioned photos I have seen (one posted by Rach herslf) whereby you could be mistaken for thinking that there isn’t a pandemic. I have finished the comment with a line about we can only blame ourselves, not the hapless government! I wonder what reaction that will get!

Day 174: Scales were delivered today. If they are accurate I am a little over 11 stones, from 12st 7lbs before lockdown. Can’t quite believe it. I have a yearly diabetic review with Lynne in October so i can check then. If the scales are wrong, I’ll be livid on 2 scores!

Friday night beers as I type. Been looking forward to them since last Saturday!

Day 175: I do not trust the new scales. I get a different reading each time I step on them and by 10-12 lbs. Fucking things. Boots arrived today - they’re going back as well. Footy season started today. Posh lost away to Acrrington Stanley. “Who are they?”

Day 176: The GP was reflagged again today (a new track at Tuscany. A red flag two races on the trot is most unusual. Hamilton won.

Day 177: I managed to get the scales working. I’m pretty much the same weight I was prior to ld (about 12.5 st). This leads me to believe that if I wasn’t doing all the walking I am, I would be as fat as a fucking house. On that note, Google Fit is playing up. It loses the step and heart point count for each walk (although the workouts retain the route map info) Wtf?

I think K and TTP might be a thing from a post I saw on FB whereby some chap (who I don’t know) commented on TTP’s post that it was nice to see him and K. Kinda gutted if it is true but I shouldn’t be. That’s all I will say on here.

Day 178: Jim contacted me today to let me know he’s leaving RCI. He was quite secretive about why and what’s going on but, there it is. He went on to say that HR will be contacting me shortly to call me back from furlough. Sueanne is taking over as team leader but that’s temporary. and that they will most likely promote from within. I struggling to think what it would be like if Mark was boss! The way RCI are and how disjointed it is with Jim as boss, I shan’t take it as read until HR do contact me. Also, I dunno how I feel about it...I have got so used to not working. But, and it’s a big but, I doubt I’ll have a job after the retention scheme finishes so, if this does pan out, it’s good. I’ll be back to job hunting while in a job, as per before the pandemic.

Also, I received an email letting me know the punishment for my speeding offence was 6 points and a £233 fine, plus costs (£90) and victim support (£34), £357 in total. More than I expected. But, no ban, so I’ll suck it up. 

Day 179: Having midweek beers. I'm in that sort of mood.

Day 180: I WhatsApp’d Jim to let him know HR haven’t contacted me. His garbled response went from telling to give them a shout and let them know he is leaving, to which I asked ‘don’t they know?’, he then said hold fire (on Sueanne’s instruction) and she has said for me to sit tight and then, finally, that HR will contact me! Fuck knows what’s going on! I had a diabetic review with Lynne today. When you go to the surgery you have to let in, which I was by Keren. It was nice to see and chat with her. She is back with Ronnie which was news to me. Then Lynne came and got me. It was nice to see and chat with her also. She weighed me and I’m 12st 3lb. Apparently in Jan last year I was over 13st!

Soooo I've been reading this thread for over an hour and came across a story about working in groups for class projects and it hit me!

First and foremost I think we can all agree that group projects are garbage and 9 times out of 10 someone in your group wont carry their weight and those people should know no happiness for all of eternity.

Anyways, about 5 years ago I was in my sports communication class and the teacher was assigning class groups that we would be with for the rest of the semester. I was paired with 3 male partners all of which were already friends who were already pretty chummy and talkative in class, not a big deal right? WRONG, they were all dead weight. You would think I'd have been ripped, by the end of the semester, the way I carried them on my back. Group report after report it was like working by myself while they patted themselves on the back doing the bare minimum. I am not a confrontational person and I hate doing anything less than my best so I kept submitting high quality reports and we kept, AS A GROUP, getting good grades.

It's not that I saw my opportunity, it was more so I was DONE that final semester. I had been working two jobs with a full course load and we had just recieved our final assignment worth 30% of our grade. It was a decent size assignment -10 written page report and a live presentation. We split up the sections, me taking the bulk of writing because "handfullofskittles, you're just so much better at writing than.." you get the picture...

I looked at the project and the decent chunk I was willing to manage and told my group this time I really couldnt step in to work on other items other than what we discussed already for everyone's responsibilities. Everyone agreed and we went on our merry way. Now, with finals and other reports and work all creating the perfect anxiety storm, I told them we can keep the project going using a Google doc so we can make edits as we go along, also would allow me to keep an eye on their progess. Two days before the report and presentation are due, (mind you one of the 3 stooges volunteered to create all the slides for the report), and I see that they in total have added 3 paragraphs to my 7 page contribution to a 10pg report. I message them all asking where the rest is. I here nothing. I wait another 24 hrs. Surely they could not be THE LEECHES that I so feared them to be. I was wrong.

Its 8am and my class is at2 pm. No one is answering my calls and the report still is three pages short, my anxiety and need to do well take over. I scrap their paragraphs finish the paper and submit.

I get to class and see them all just laughing and joking in their seats, I'm furious, but keeping my cool. I ask them if all their phones were broken or if they had family emergencies. Not really but I wish, I told them about the extra three pages and how their paragraphs were unusable and I had to complete the report by myself. They all looked at me in confusion as they thought I had volunteered to write the ENTIRE 10pg report and the three of them would do the PowerPoint.... a PowerPoint of 8 slides mind you...... including an intro and end slide. Ha. Ha. Ha sobbing*

That class we also had to present. I dont practice for presentations but I know my topics well and I'm thypically the closer. So I put the report behind me and pray to God this powerpoint is at least substantial. They get the PowerPoint on the screen. The word communications is misspelled. This. is. a. communications. class.

I expected so little and was still disappointed

Seeing the mispelled word, I snapped. I had, had enough. I felt so defeated that my teacher would base my work off the work of these baboons. I did what I never thought I would do. I snitched. I like to think it was subtle, but who the fuck am I kidding. Immediately after we gave our presentation, I walked out, didnt stay for the rest of class, gone girl.

There are very few things in this world that we can control and I believe that the quality of work we do is one of them. I was not about to let these parasites take credit for my work and I did not want to be associated with the PowerPoint. So, I sent an email to my teacher that was similar to the following:

Me: dear insert teachers name, "Im reaching out about how embarrassed I am about the presentaion today. I want you to know i had no hand in the creation, but wanted to know if I could be graded solely on the parts on the paper I wrote on my own. (I attached the 10 page report, highlighted the whole thing except my partners names). I have attached and highlighted the sections I completed. Any section not highlighted was completed by my partners"

Teacher got back to me simply saying "but you highlighted the whole thing..."

Me "yup"

I guess it clicked with my teacher as I never recieved a direct email back and no concerns on me not contributing to the PowerPoint. I ended up receiving a 95 on the final reports and let's just say the 3partners were not too pleased with their final grades.

I never shared my grade with them, as I was afraid of confrontation, but I acted like I recieved a bad grade too and mentioned it may have been because we mispelled communication on the PowerPoint. All thing considered this is a COMMUNICATIONS CLASS!

okay thank you all for bearing with me this week 💕 i’m going to do a little summary of my adventures & the nct 127 concert after the cut (don’t want to take up too much blog space with this stuff since this is technically a pentagon blog). i should be pretty much back on track on monday, since i’m going to be traveling again this weekend.

if you don’t want to read below the cut: i’ve driven 24+ hrs for the sake of kpop and have 13 more to go, the concert was awesome AND i got offered the job that i’ve wanted.

yes, you read that right 24+ hours of driving. i moved to wisconsin about six months ago, but my best friend still lives in pennsylvania (where i’m from). so yes, i could have gone to the nct concert in chicago, but i drove all the way to pa (13 hours) so that i could take my friend to the concert in new jersey (which was another 4 hour drive). FRIENDSHIP.

she & i got to newark like 30 minutes before the concert started, got to the prudential center like 3 minutes before the concert started, and stood outside for like 10 minutes waiting for the freaking mobile tickets to load on my phone. cricket wireless sucks lmao but lesson learned: always load up your tickets at the hotel BEFORE you get to the venue.

thankfully we didn’t miss anything because they started about 10 minutes after 8pm. we had pretty good seats too, directly across from the stage and not too far back. i think they were technically p3 seats? i don’t remember.

the boys opened with cherry bomb, and each member got a little introductory dance break throughout the song. i don’t remember the rest of the song order, but they had a fantastic set list. there was a portion of the concert that was ballads & more mellow songs, and i nearly cried when they sang “no longer.” it’s not one i listen to very often, but i’ve never witnessed such heartfelt, vulnerable vocals live. it was so powerful and doyoung & taeil just simply amazed me with their talent (the other boys too, of course, but the two of them particularly stood out to me with the raw strength of their live vocals). 

they also premiered three new songs from their upcoming album and i’m so stoked for the new music to come out next month!! “jet lag,” “highway to heaven,” and “superhuman.” it was so cute - after “jet lag,” they paused to talk a little, and haechan said something to the audience to the extent of “that was so nice, didn’t it almost feel like we went on a date together?” and all of the other guys were like SDLKFJINIO STOP IT HAECHAN. 

after two hours, they wrapped up and said “we have just two songs left!” but of course everyone knows there’s going to be an encore. still, i saw people leaving after the boys left the stage, which was crazy to me. because once the boys came back, they premiered “highway to heaven” and “superhuman,” and i think they did some other songs too? WAIT after they did “superhuman” the oldest members went to get changed again while the younger members talked with us about the album. then the younger members changed while the older members did a contest to see who we thought was the coolest member lmao basically the whole encore added an extra 45-50 minutes of content. SO DON’T MISS IT.

anyway, the concert was incredible and nct 127 is so so talented and they all did such a good job with their english, too. they clearly put in a lot of work for this concert and i appreciate their dedication so much. 💕

after the concert my friend and i drove through the sketchiest part of newark to try to go to ihop, but ended up not eating there because it seemed so unsafe lmao probably the most stressful part of the trip.

yesterday after we left our hotel, we made a short trip to NYC even though we tell ourselves every single time that we’re not going to go into the city again. BUT there’s a kpop store and i wanted albums mwahaha (and also i needed more face powder from innisfree). i purchased the new stray kids & the new pentagon albums, and i’ll probably post some photos/videos of genie:us later. i’m so in love with it lol

got back to my house last night, and i have to drive another 3 hours today to get my friend back to her home. then i’m going to spend some quality time with my parents tomorrow, and on sunday my boyfriend, dog, and I are all piling into the car and making the 13 hour drive back to wisconsin.

there’s this healthcare software company that i applied to work for back in november. they had a technical writer position open (basically someone who writes documentation, nothing creative). i applied and got rejected after a phone interview. okay, whatever.

end of january, i decide to try applying again. i had added some freelance writing experience to my resume and i hoped that might help my chances. this time i was invited on-site for an interview. i think that happened towards the end of february? they said “we’ll let you know one way or the other in two weeks.”

two weeks passes, then another week, and another week. i kept getting in touch with my hr contact about it and she said over and over “i’m so sorry, we don’t have an answer yet but i’ll let you know as soon as we do.” okay, cool. i’ll be patient.

in the mean time, i took a job doing copy writing for a small marketing company. the healthcare software company finally got back to me at the beginning of april, saying that it’s a no this time. 

then last week, my roommate (my bf and i live with one of our friends) said he’s basically being forced to move to dubai for work, which means he can’t help us out with rent anymore, which means that my copy writing job will no longer be sustainable. i freaked out because now i have less than a month to get something figured out before he moves.

so i emailed my hr rep at the healthcare software company, saying ‘hey you considered me for a quality assurance position too, is there any chance that could work out since the writing position is a no go?’

and she got back to me this past monday saying ‘oh hey we actually just got approval to bring on more writers and we were talking about offering you the job. can i call you to chat about the details?’

she offered me the technical writing job that afternoon, and i accepted wednesday morning. i’ll be making more than enough to support me and my bf (who can’t work right now due to a yet-to-be-diagnosed mystery illness - that sounds sassy but i swear it’s not, he’s actually very sick). i can actually afford rent and food for both of us and it’s like a huge weight has been lifted off of my shoulders.

i don’t start until the beginning of june, but i am so so so excited. i can’t believe that i can actually make a living wage doing something with writing.

After taking game one, coming back from a 4-0 deficit in the first inning, you trailed 4-0 again in game two but this time it was going to the 6th inning when Mercer and Polanco both hit solo homers. It seemed like you might have spoiled an opportunity to take two from one of the worst teams in baseball when the White Sox added a run to make it 5-2 going to the 9th. After back to back singles from Marte and Bell, Elias Diaz came up with one out and ripped a two-run double to score both and bring the score to 5-4. Rookie Colin Moran came up next and hit a two-run homer to give you the lead for good. After your second off day of the week, the San Francisco Giants and prodigal son Andrew McCutchen came to Pittsburgh. In all three games, the fans gave Cutch a standing ovation of appreciation for almost single-handedly bringing this organization back to prominence. Even for someone not at the stadium, the moment was special to watch especially because it brought your highest attendance so far this season. You did somewhat spoil his return by winning two out of three and making it a successful 4-1 week. Opportunities to beat up on bad teams still exist this week so let’s strive for a similar outcome.

It’s finally over. Geroge Kontos (4.58 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, 7 K’s in 17 2/3 IP) has been removed from the 8th inning setup role after he blew yet another lead against the Giants on Saturday. I complained last week about Hurdle leaving Kontos in during a key moment against the Brewers when Ryan Braun was coming up. He blew it then and when you had a one run lead in the 8th inning Saturday my phone was blowing up with people complaining that they knew Kontos would be coming in and would blow it again. How did everyone in Pittsburgh except Clint Hurdle know this? Obviously, he gave up a run to tie the game. Fortunately, you were able to get the run back next inning when former Bucco, Tony Watson, hit Jordy Mercer with a pitch with the bases loaded and you held on to win. Based on comments made by Hurdle and GM Neal Huntington on Sunday, it seems like the straw finally broke the camel’s back and Kontos has been removed from that role. The most frustrating part is you have so many better options. Michael Feliz (3.18 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, 23 K’s in 17 IP) has done great work in the 7th inning so he could easily transfer to the 8th. Edgar Santana (1.08 WHIP, 16 K’s in 16 2/3 IP) has been good all season and would work out great in the 7th. If those two or your closer Vazquez needs a day off, then Kyle Crick (2.89 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, 13 K’s in 9 1/3 IP) has performed well for most of the season too. That seems like the best way to go at this point. I know Richard Rodriguez (1.84 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, 25 K’s in 14 2/3 IP) has done nice work but he gave up the run on Wednesday in Chicago to give them a 5-2 lead. Even worse, he came in to relieve Ivan Nova trailing 2-0 yesterday with two men on base and promptly gave up a three-run homer to put the game out of reach. He probably shouldn’t be counted on in too many high leverage situations and neither should Kontos. Kontos velocity had dipped from prior seasons and it’s hard to be a back end of the bullpen guy when you don’t have a legitimate strikeout pitch. I mean, look at his strikeout rate. Both of those guys should be relegated to middle relief and what once was a struggling bullpen suddenly looks like a strength.    

You are about to have a very good problem. You only needed four starting pitchers this week so you sent down Nick Kingham Later this week you will need a fifth starter again and it seems like Kingham will then return. That’s at least what I want to see. The other interesting element to this discussion is Joe Musgrove, a starting pitcher acquired in the Cole trade. Musgrove started the season on the DL but has been pitching rehab assignments lately working his way back to the majors. He should have one more rehab start to get himself up to 100 pitches but his most recent one on Saturday was, well, perfect. He only went 5 2/3 innings due to an 80 pitch limit, but he didn’t give up a walk, or a hit, and struck out six. After one more start in the minors, he will be ready to come up which begs the question: What do you do with the rotation? Obviously, you could send Kingham back down though based on what I’ve seen he’s one of your top five starters. Musgrove did pitch out of the bullpen last year with great success for the Astros but if he’s pitching like this I at least want to see what he can do as a starter. Taillon and Williams are entrenched in the top five so that leaves Kuhl and Nova. Funny enough, Nova’s currently the worst out of the six. He’s currently sporting a 5.01 ERA with a 1.35 WHIP. His start yesterday was going well before the tires fell off in the 6th, but his two starts before that were horrible. Kuhl’s numbers are a little better, 4.17 ERA and 1.35 WHIP, and he’s coming off not only his best start of the season but arguably the best of his career. It’s hard for me to imagine you pulling either of them out of the rotation though. I really don’t have a guess for what’s going to happen. Knowing you though, my out-there prediction is if Nova’s next start is poor you will put him on the DL for some random reason and let the other five go for two weeks to see how they perform and then re-evaluate. That’s also if Taillon’s finger injury that caused him to leave the game Friday doesn’t remain a problem. Given how little faith I admittedly had in your starting pitching going into this season, I’ll happily deal with problems like this.

We are almost at the quarter point of the season and you still remain only a ½ game out of first place. So, who is your MVP so far? There are two very easy candidates right now in Francisco Cervelli (.305 avg. .414 OBP, 6 HR’s 24 RBI’s, .985 OPS) and Corey Dickerson (.319 avg, .355 OBP, 5 HR’s, 27 RBI’s .880 OPS). Dickerson is also just behind the league leader in doubles with 12. The one guy who is also in the conversation who probably isn’t getting enough credit right now is Starling Marte (.304 avg, .362 OBP, 6 HR’s 19 RBI’s, .856 OPS, 10 SB). Marte already has 15 walks this season after only having 20 last season. He did only play a half season with his suspension but he played a full season the year before, his best season too, and only walked 23 times. His plate discipline has improved exponentially. Marte has also finally started playing the type of CF we expected with two catches in the last week that only a handful of players in baseball could make. If those are the candidates for MVP, then who are the finalsist for most disappointing players? Josh Bell (.721 OPS) is the leading candidate now with Polanco (.808 OPS) a little more on track but my actual choice is Adam Frazier (.231/.286/.308 for a .593 OPS.) There was a time before you got Corey Dickerson that he was going to be your starting LF. That alone might give Dickerson the MVP and prove how poor the front office judgment can be at times. After the JHay injury, Frazier was penciled in as the starting 2B and leadoff man but has just been abysmal. When you bring up your fifth starter this week, he or Max Moroff will be demoted. There’s no way Jose Osuna will now that he’s legitimately the best hitter on this team against lefties. His absurd overall OPS of 1.188 (obviously extreme small sample size) will keep him in the majors. With Bell’s early struggles too, he could play 1st or even RF for Polanco like he did yesterday. Either way, that guy has to start every game against lefties. JHay starts a rehab assignment this week so Frazier’s value diminishes even more for a guy David Freese said could win a batting title one day. He very well could, but it will probably have to be in Triple-A.

Like I’ve been saying, this week provides you another opportunity against two struggling team. You have another two-game series against the White Sox starting tomorrow, this time in Pittsburgh. The White Sox currently have the worst record in all of baseball. You do face their ace, Reynaldo Lopez, tomorrow but you should still be able to win both of those games. Starting Thursday, you begin a four-game series with the San Diego Padres who currently have the fifth worst record in all of baseball. That series is in Pittsburgh too and with how competitive your division has been all season, you can’t afford a bad week against bad teams. That hasn’t been a problem all year so I’m hoping it doesn’t start now. After three games against lowly Cincinnati next week, you have a stretch of games when you play the Cardinals, Cubs, Cardinals again, Dodgers, Cubs again, and the Diamondbacks. All of those teams, except the Dodgers, are either in first place or within a game of it. That’s a rough 13 game stretch with only one day off within it. That’s why it’s even more essential to win as many games as possible this week. You’ve gotten plenty of rest with three off days in the last week, so you should be prepared to do battle. You didn’t even want to go home that night knowing that you couldn’t sleep after having heard the news. You continuously kept thinking about what to do.

Instead of going home you spent time at a 24 hr convenience store, having a quiet place to think.

Once the next day came, you went to school but you were restless from the night before. Joshua came into the room giving a short glance but didn’t say anything.

You were resting with heavy eyelids, regretting your decision of not sleeping.

Throughout the class you were half asleep, not listening to the lesson at all. By the time the class ended, you had rest your head on the desk and covered yourself with your arms.

“Hey.” A low voice said to you.

“Leave me alone please.” You breathed out.

He scoffed giving you a small smirk. “Did you get into a fight with your boyfriend or something?”

“We aren’t together!” You barked at the voice, raising your head from your desk while shooting the boy a glare.

He took a minute to reply to you, taking off his headphones slowly. “I never said I hated you or that I was angry at you.” Vernon said in a low voice. He never did talk any louder..for some reason.

You took another breath to relax yourself. You were tense and as frustrated as it is and talking to Vernon did not help at all.

He decides not to answer that question so you change back to the main subject. “Are you going to help me with the project?” You asked.

the day sungjong leaves for new york is a big affair. howon rides in the sunggyu’s car with woohyun, myungsoo, and dongwoo. sungjong and sungyeol are in the car in front of them along with their parents, sungjong and sungyeol’s maternal grandmother, and all of sungjong’s luggage. even though sungjong and sungyeol’s grandmother and mother are barely holding back tears and won’t let sungjong out of their arms even as he laughs and continuously repeats that phones exist for a reason, the general atmosphere isn’t a sad one.

sungjong is right, after all - there are phones and computers and they’ll all be able to hear his voice and see his face as many times as they want and need to. he’ll be back between semesters for a month at a time, and for the summer for an entire three months.

after he checks in, they all walk him to the security gate to say their final goodbyes. howon stands back, almost to the side, and watches as everyone else hugs and kisses him - the youngest out of all of them, the last one they watched walk across that familiar platform in their high school to receive his diploma just a few months ago.

his carry-on is just a backpack - not the one he used for school, but a new one that sungyeol had bought for him when sungjong first received the acceptance letter to this program. he’s almost an entire head taller than howon now, even though when they just met, he’d only had a few centimeters on him. sungjong has also begun to lose his cheeks, the baby fat clinging to his jaw almost completely gone, and howon tries to ignore the pang in his chest when he thinks about how he won’t see sungjong finish growing up - he won’t be there.

he uses the time it takes for sungjong’s parents, grandmother, and the others to be completely satisfied in how much they’ve mussed his hair and nearly suffocated him to swallow down the rest of those feelings. this is going to be quite possibly a life-changing experience for sungjong, and he’s worked sleepless night upon sleepless night for this, and howon wants him to take the world by storm like he inevitably always would.

“this is a special occasion so don’t think i’ll let you touch him ever again,” sungyeol says, shoving howon forward by the back of his head. howon grins back at his friend, as he feels sungjong tugging him in by the arm.

he lets sungjong wrap his long arms around howon’s neck, face buried against the side of howon’s hair. howon pulls his own arms tight around sungjong’s waist and breathes in the scent he won’t smell again until december. “don’t eat too much shake shack,” howon says into sungjong’s neck. he feels the younger boy shake with laughter against him. “you won’t grow taller forever.”

“i’ll smuggle some back for you, hyung,” comes the reply as sungjong pulls away and smiles at him, eyes just a little wetter than they should be.

howon smiles back and pushes him with both of his hands on the omega’s back. “hurry up,” he says, as much of a laugh in his voice as he can inject without feeling his own eyes get too warm.

once sungjong is out of sight, howon feels woohyun’s hand squeeze his shoulder and sungyeol’s hand firm on his back. howon puts his hands in his pockets and turns to face them. myungsoo isn’t crying as hard as sungjong’s mother and grandmother are, but it’s a close call. “wanna get drunk?” woohyun slings an arm around howon’s neck.

howon glances at him with a half-smile. “you bet.”

there isn’t usually much traffic once howon gets out of the city itself onto the larger roads that lead him from seoul to incheon, but at around four in the morning, even the bit of traffic he usually encounters coming out of seoul is hardly there. it takes less than an hour today to get to the airport, and by the time he does, the first few barest rays of dawn are starting to peek through into the sky. he hadn’t slept at all tonight, afraid that he’d miss his alarm if he did.

he had work to get done anyway, and just started on whatever he needed to get through for next week once he had finished that in order to keep himself awake until it was time to leave.

the airport is as empty as the roads, the red-eye flights just beginning to land and most coming in on those planes are businessmen with chauffeurs from agencies and hotels waiting for them, holding placards with last names on them. howon goes to the board of arrivals, looking to make sure that sungjong’s flight was still due to land on time and to see which gate he needed to wait at.

even there, howon is fairly sure that he’s the only person who isn’t in a suit with a name-board. he takes his phone from the back pocket of his jeans. there aren’t any new messages he can look through because no one is awake at this hour, obviously. the last messages he received were from sungjong just before he’d gotten on the flight, nearly twelve hours ago. howon had sent him back suggestions for where sungjong wanted to eat once he returned, since more often than not, sungjong is hungrier for korean food than he is for sleep whenever he arrives.

sungjong had gotten on the plane and turned off his phone before he could read those messages, but now, when howon checks the chat, they’ve been read, which means sungjong’s flight really is on time, and he’s landed already - most probably reading the messages while waiting for his bags or during immigration.

people begin coming out of the gate about an hour after the arrival time that had been listed on the board. howon tucks his phone back into his jeans, hands in the pockets of his jacket as he bounces up and down on the heels of his feet, waiting.

the first time sungjong came home - from new york, after his two years abroad - they had all come to pick him up along with sungjong’s parents in the same way that they’d sent him off. it was like that when sungjong had gone off again two years later and when he returned a few weeks later. after three, four, five times, once it became sungjong’s steady career, and he began living with howon, it was either just howon or sometimes howon and sungyeol, or one of the others whenever howon just couldn’t make it himself.

sungjong insisted for a time that it was ridiculous and he could take himself to and from the airport by taxi, but howon thinks that’s more ridiculous and said exactly that to sungjong’s exasperated smile.

for the most part, howon knows sungjong understands now that howon does this almost as much for himself as he does for sungjong. from time to time, however, like yesterday, sungjong still tries to get howon to let sungjong take a cab. i’m going to land at five in the morning and you had meetings all week, hyung, sungjong had said, as howon watched him pack through his laptop screen.

you know we just eat and fuck around at those, howon had joked, grinning, and curling his fingers against the cotton of his joggers beneath the table - far from what the camera of his laptop could capture, where sungjong couldn’t see. he’d watched sungjong roll his eyes and smile back, not pushing further because even when sungjong had once told howon point-blank that sungjong was going to walk straight past howon and take a taxi even if he was there, howon had still come anyway, dragged a laughing sungjong to his car, and demanded that sungjong pay a fare since, after all, sungjong wanted to take a taxi so badly.

yesterday, howon had watched sungjong sitting on his suitcase, stomping on his suitcase, lying stomach down on his suitcase in an attempt to get it to shut, and he’d laughed and told sungjong that the omega was far too light to make even the slightest difference in getting it to shut - as well as asking him if he was trying to sneak in an entire year’s supply of fish and chips. he’d watched sungjong, and tried not to think about how, if he was there, he’d have jumped next to sungjong on top of the suitcase and they would’ve pressed it down together, each of them clicking the fastening closest to their hands.

he’d watched sungjong climb into bed holding the laptop and couldn’t help himself from imagining himself lying there beside him, one arm thrown over his stomach and the other pulling the blanket over both of them. he’d watched sungjong fall asleep through the screen of his laptop, and his finger hovered over his mouse pad for far too long before he brought himself to end the call.

there are more people than he expected now pouring out of the automatic double doors, and it takes him a moment before he sees the long, thin arm waving at him and the familiar suitcases piled on the luggage cart. he’s running in through the crowd before he knows it, around the cart and then his arms are around a small, warm waist and his face is pressed into a soft neck and he’s inhaling the scent of home.

sungjong doesn’t come home until new year’s.

howon had planned to take him out that night, christmas eve night, that sungjong should have landed had the snowstorm not escalated into the worst blizzard that both seoul and tokyo had seen in a fair decade. he’d planned to take sungjong to the christmas festival that they used to go to together when sungjong was in university, and then to see the display of christmas trees that had been put up near the square of shops beside their apartment complex.

sungyeol and myungsoo had also thrown a christmas party, expecting sungjong to have been home by then, and while they all still laughed and talked and drank until it wasn’t even christmas anymore, howon knows he isn’t the only one that felt the empty space - that they were all missing the person they were supposed to tease mercilessly and lovingly.

sungjong had video-called howon from the hotel room the airport had put him in later that night, the night he was supposed to come home. i had to wash my boxers in the sink and dry them on a chair, he’d said to howon’s unsympathetic guffawing. no stores are open so i couldn’t even buy new underwear, hyung, stop laughing.

that night howon listened to a good, solid two hours of sungjong ranting about the inadequacies of the airport staff and the various people who he’d watched make scenes in the middle of the airport and also the hotel lobby - from entertaining and dramatic to full-blown annoying and inconsiderate to the fact that everyone is stuck because of the snow and everyone had places to be.

maybe i should’ve just hopped on my suitcase and rowed my way back - it’s not that far, right? sungjong joked wearily, leaning back on the pillows and pulling his laptop closer to himself on the bed.

this is why you almost failed physics if it weren’t for me, howon teased, and sungjong smiled.

howon didn’t remember who had fallen asleep first that night. he just remembered waking up to his laptop having hibernated on its own, and a slew of messages in all of the chats he was in - from his group chat with woohyun and sungyeol, telling him to remember to bring quality alcohol or he’s not allowed in the house, to myungsoo reminding him to bring enough alcohol for the two of them once everyone else has passed out, to sunggyu threatening him not to give sunggyu presents for his unborn children because there’s been enough of that and to bring sunggyu something, to dongwoo pleading for him to bring food because no one else will remember to.

he opened all of the messages but replied to none of them yet.

before he went back to sort anything else out, he opened the messages he had saved for last.

they were photos of sungjong out in the snow, despite what he had changed his name in the chat to while howon was asleep. howon still has those photos saved to his phone, unable to stop flipping back and forth through them as he waits now at the gate for sungjong to arrive finally - six days later than he was supposed to be home, but howon would rather wait as long as it took if that meant sungjong would be flown over in safer weather.

howon assumes sungjong had taken these photos somewhere near the hotel - possibly just even in the parking lot or on the sidewalk, even though it really was snowing so hard, howon could barely make out sungjong’s face through the snowflakes and wind blowing his scarf around his face. it had snowed straight through the next three days before the storm finally stopped, and then it took another three days before conditions were safe enough and the weather wasn’t too dangerous for the engines.

sungjong had told howon yesterday that he was going to be on the first flight out the following day, and howon had only barely been able to sleep.

he’s done this so many times now - he’s fairly sure a good portion of the airport staff around all shifts know him - the people who work the bakeries and cafes around the perimeter of the arrival gates definitely know him, but for some reason, his heart still pounds loudly in his chest whenever he’s waiting for sungjong.

he’ll never say it’s easy because it isn’t. none of this is ever easy, and all of it has been so romanticised, but there is nothing fun or romantic or sweet about having lived together with sungjong for so many years now - the omega’s name is on the lease along with howon’s - but it hardly feels like they’ve shared a home at all. absence doesn’t make the heart grow fonder is a load of bullshit because all sungjong’s absence does is make howon miss him so much, there are times he’ll just be gazing into sungjong’s eyes through the screen of his laptop or phone, and the realization of the situation will hit him with crippling pain - that sungjong is miles upon miles away and howon isn’t looking into his eyes - just an image inside a machine.

there have been so many people who have no idea what it’s like giving howon advice - whether it’s from his colleagues, to friends of friends who hear about his and sungjong’s situation from the others, to his brothers, to even his relatives. some of them have told him it’ll get easier, some of them have told him that long-distance strengthens relationships.

he doesn’t think it’ll ever get easier, and he doesn’t think he’s in any place to judge how strong or weak he and sungjong are together.

all he knows is that no matter how hard it gets -

“good news or bad news first,” sungjong breathes against howon’s shoulder, seconds after the omega has thrown himself straight into howon, backpack half off his shoulders and suitcase crashed to the floor at their feet.

howon clenches his eyes shut and holds sungjong so tightly that he’s pretty sure the straps of sungjong’s backpack will leave indents in howon’s arms even through the sleeves of the alpha’s thick coat. “my tokyo bananas got squished?”

“okay - that was the bad news,” sungjong’s voice is more muffled now because both he and howon are hugging each other so closely, howon doesn’t think he could breathe even if he tried. “the good news is - “

“you’re home?” howon asks, and lets sungjong pull away slightly - just enough so he can look up into the younger man’s face.

sungjong presses his smile against howon’s mouth briefly - too, too briefly. “that, too,” the omega says, “but also, sunggyu-hyung’s box wasn’t squished so we can just give him the squished ones.”

when howon surges forward to kiss sungjong back this time, sungjong’s beanie flies off his head.

“you know,” sungyeol says, as he walks howon down to the security checkpoint, “i should technically be ripping your boarding pass in half right about now.”

howon grins. “you know, he’s going to come home in a week so regardless, in about a week’s time, you’re going to be seeing that ring on his finger and - regardless - soon we’re gonna be a real fami - “

“literally, you disgust me,” sungyeol cuts him off. “i should have killed you and fed your remains to my cats while i had the chance, but now my parents are expecting sungjong to come back engaged and he can’t be engaged to a box of organs.”

even though there are still quite a fair few people in the airport at this time of night, not yet so late that the flow of flights has slowed, it’s quieter than the usual hustle and bustle during peak time a few hours ago in the evening and late afternoon. the workers at the cafe howon always gets coffee from, sometimes with sungjong and sometimes for sungjong, while he’s waiting actually stared at him for a good few seconds upon seeing his suitcase as he and sungyeol grabbed a quick bite before going to check howon in.

he has a long wait until his flight actually leaves because it’s an international flight and he had to arrive two hours beforehand to get his boarding pass, so he plans to eat more once he’s inside and there are more actual restaurants. he’ll eat his fill at the airport and then opt out of eating on the plane. he plans to attempt to sleep as much as he can to minimize his jet lag once he arrives, although he has a feeling that no matter how exhausted he is when he gets there, he won’t be able to feel any of the tiredness.

howon pauses when they arrive at the passageway that leads into security. he turns to face sungyeol, and his best friend is looking back at him with some combination of exasperation, pride, and affection. “wish me luck,” howon says.

sungyeol snorts, yanking him forward into a hug and thumping his back fiercely. “you don’t need it, you cradlerobber.”

when sungjong opens the door, he yells so loudly that howon has to push him into the room and close the door behind them before kissing him silent so that they don’t startle the entire floor. sungjong stares, open-mouthed at howon, nearly stuttering when he asks faintly what howon is doing here - in paris - when he had told sungjong just two days ago that he would be in jeju for a conference.

sungjong is still in thin, gray joggers and a black t-shirt. his hair is wet and messy, and howon is fairly sure that he’d just woken up an hour before howon had messaged him. howon himself had arrived near the middle of the night, getting to the airport hotel sometime early in the morning, showering, and eating quickly before driving into the city. he’d only slept on the plane, over twelve hours ago now, but he’s never felt more awake in his life.

howon answers without words what he flew out of the country for - he answers with a broad grin as he lowers himself onto one knee in front of the person he’s loved for the past ten years of his life and that he’ll love for hundreds more. he opens the box he’d brought all the way from their home, thousands of miles away, and he says, “i promise to follow you wherever you go, if you promise to always come home to me.”

something between a gasp and a sob slips past sungjong’s lips before he presses the back of his hand over his mouth, eyebrows furrowing like he’s determined not to cry even though that’s a fairly lost cause, in howon’s opinion, judging by the way the younger man’s eyes are already brimming. “will you marry me, lee sungjong?”

howon barely gets the entire name out before he’s being kissed within an inch of his life. the ring nearly goes flying out of howon’s hand from the force that sungjong throws himself forward with. howon lands flat on his back on the floor, toppling over with sungjong on top of him, dampness forming against the collar of howon’s shirt.

“yes,” sungjong whispers, leaning back and smiling, swiping at the wetness on his face with the back of his hand. howon catches the tears with his thumb. “yes,” sungjong repeats, louder, voice slightly hoarse before he dips in and covers howon’s mouth with his own.
