why is there so much ship content between sato kido and kano?? are they not adoptive siblings?? theres even some in semi canon (i think) contents like in anthologies too,, i mean not surprised it exists since weird people are in every fandom but its talked so casually here

with momo and hibiya too actually! because of the huge age gap you would think it wouldn't be such a casual ship but it somehow is?? as far as i seen anyways

im putting it under the cut bc it turned out kinda long and into a rant, and also to warn i mention the themes suggested in the ask (incest, age gaps)

basically it's no secret that in japanese media, incest and age gaps are widely normalized even today so just imagine in 2013 when kagepro was at its peak.

back then, kido and kano specifically were a WIDELY popular ship. here's the thing with the weird kano and kido (and seto too but mainly kano and kido) shipping, aside from what i said abt normalized incest and shit. kano and kido (and seto) being siblings is actually... sort of a spoiler? it's not revealed early on.

kano and kido are presented as 2 kids the same age living together and having different names. and they purposefully stop acting like siblings. SO it doesnt register until you get into their backstories. they're both adopted into the same family when theyre like... 7 or 8, and were friends before becoming siblings so people were able to use this excuse: "OHHH THEYRE MORE CHILDHOOD FRIENDS"

but like..... they live together as siblings for YEARS and to be honest im sure 99% of people watch the song mvs FIRST which u can binge in 1 afternoon and if ur watching with any sort of actual interest and attention, you WILL see kano and kido as part of the tateyama family in ayano's theory of happiness. not to mention the anime came out in 2014 which im also sure 99% of kagepro fans have seen. so to me that was always an excuse if it came from a very dedicated fan though i do understand it if it's from a casual enjoyer, like they truly didn't catch that they're siblings

when i joined the fandom i was 13, didnt know eng or japanese, and thought mekatrio childhood friends made total sense for some good 6 months into the fandom until I realised properly. a few months ago, i discovered a very close friend of mine had a kagepro phase in 2014 or something and told me he really shipped kano and kido and when i told him they're siblings he was like WHAT!!!!!!!

and another thing abt kano and kido. they're indubitably the queerest characters. THEY LOOK THE FUCKING GAYEST. there is Something abt pushing the gay characters together?? kido is constantly mistaked for a guy. kano the poor thing had ANOTHER popular ship going for him with ayano because people decided he is that way to shintaro because he actually had a crush on ayano. yeah. this was the fucking consensus with kano, shintaro and ayano. like i mentioned i DONT KNOW japanese and only ever read the translations of the novels and i also dont Know what jin was thinking when writing kano and shintaro. But. dear lord it reads fucking homosexual my dude. jin does this by accident a lot though. look at kido and momo. momo calling kido beautiful 1000 times but she's like Well as a woman i am jealous i wish i was that pretty. bruuuh ok anyways moving on Ill GET to jin again in a second.

like you said, semi official stuff like the anthologies are very heavy on this ship and also.... sorry, the manga which is an official media. is Heavily into this ship. for jin's stance on it, i am not sure. i do think he laughs it off but he NEVER intended to write them that way. in the seventh novel theres a whole bit where kido's telling kano you shouldve never hidden this from me im your sister we are family. even shintaro who is the pov ur reading from is like wow what a nice brother and sister AND THATS THE SECOND TO LAST NOVEL WHICH BY THEN THE SHIP WAS SUPER POPULAR SO TO ME THAT WAS JIN'S WAY OF REMINDING EVERYONE THEYRE SIBLINGS. personally i think jin truthfully intended to write kano and kido as siblings but doesnt care people ship them otherwise he wouldnt have had the manga written by someone who shipped them

so basically what happened. kagepro was confusing and people sometimes missed they are siblings. in japanese media its super normalized. it is 2013 so here it is also normalized in fandom spaces. fanart ensues, even official or semi official content teases it, and yeah. boom its popular

another big part of it was, EVERYONE GETS A PARTNER!!!! kagepro content has A LOT of Shipping Pieces if that makes sense. idk what to call it but like god, pixiv entries with 1 shinaya, 1 harutaka, 1 setomary.... and 1 hibiya and momo and 1 kano and kido. god awful. if any golden year kagepro fans follow me they will KNOW what im talking about.

now that i mentioned it. hibiya and momo. ough. idk man. people were properly weird with this one. because with kano and kido they at least made up a damn excuse. with hibiya and momo there was nothing. but the thing is, jin is entirely to blame here. absolutely fucking disgusting bro. unlike with kano and kido, with hibiya and momo he actively wrote it. in the third novel their chapters together or any of hibiya's chapters are actual fucking torture to read. i wont go into details if u havent read it but like there are Reasons i never recommend kagepro to people.

its good to give jin proper respect he IS the creator of my favorite characters ever in the whole wide world and the writer of the story that makes me the happiest ever in the history of life. but. that doesn't mean i dont hold him accountable for being weird as hell in his writing because he absolutely is

back in the early days of this blog i had my very own Gets Send Deaths Threats arc by some people who shipped these guys or people who were mad i criticized jin (i always suspected it was like. the same 1 or 2 people. with a lot of time in their hands) soooo honestly answering this activated my fight of flight a little bit but tbh i havent seen Any content here on tumblr (i do have everything blacklisted to hell and back) or gotten ANY rude messages here in years, so i think we're good👍

hope this was helpful and i hope ur not grossed out of kagepro though I'd understand. u kinda need a strong stomach not only for its themes but sadly kagepro does the gross anime thing animes do :(

Something i don't think ill ever understand is when teachers don't let students w/anxiety present at a dif time (ex: lunch, after school)

And they always use the same excuses too??? Its always "Everyone needs fair advantages" "You need to practice to get better, if you never practice you'll never get better" or "But you still do really good!"

Everyone *DOESNT* have fair advantages, actually, because, other ppl don't have anxiety or have panic/anxiety attacks when they present????? If anything it would be *more* fair to have them present alone or infront a small group of ppl so they can do even better and not feel like garbage while doing it,

ohhh and dont get me started on ppl saying "you need to practice to get better" bc i can guarantee that in my 11 years of doing oral presentation that i have, infact, NOT gotten less nervous doing them. Even after 11 years of teachers forcing me to present infront a group of 20 other kids my age that see me as weird, i still get anxiety and panic attacks when i need to present. It. Has. Not. Gotten. Easier, literally what is so hard to understand from that >:/

And yes i may LOOK like im doing decent in my presentation, but i feel like im dying???? Like who are you to tell me how i feel??

And dont even get me STARTED on how ableist the presentation requirements are. Seriously, "make eye contact", "don't fidget", "don't stutter" HELLO???? Not only are those nd traits, they can also stem from anxiety which leads me back to; if you don't want students do that, then don't make them present infront of the class??????

Responding to the captain howdie callout docuement, attepting to provide some kind of context to the actions of the past, trying to detangle and discuss some of the actual issues in the comic and presented by the document.

This is not nessecarily meant to be a defense. It was kinda blatent to me that the document lacks context and clarity that results from context that make the criticisms functionally useless. Unless their aim is to stir up a hate mob, then its constructed quite well

CW for every topic that is discussed in the original document. In more detail. Aditionally discussions of school shooters are briefly had.

Also this is long and my writing is bad. Sorry.

Nyen's old design -

Okay... while this design read more as creepy pasta character inspired than it does blackface to me, I am not black so i dont really feel like i can comment on it. But i also kinda doubt it was done with the intent of it being black face. I am judging that by how things intended to be blackface are usually depicted. But if it was intended or not doesnt realky matter yea? Because of the harm caused.

But also this is like. previously deleted (i think?) stuff? the design isnt in the comic. So i am not really sure what... what is to be gained by digging it up? What is the harm that was being currently caused by deleted pictures? I guess the argument would be, it help contribute to normalizing blackface back in the day? And because nyen is violent it perpetuates sterotypes of black people being violent and agressive... ahh... i just... how is a sterotype being perpetuated in a harmful way if no one would look at that character desgin and think "yeah thats a black man". Unless they were already wildly rascist. i think to most people on the internet on devientart in 2011 would see that design and think he was like a creepy black cat character. Since like.. black shadow people was and are kinda a thing? And when people wanted to be rascist back then, they were pretty open about it. There are elements to certain drawings that i think make the "shadow person" idea questionable, and at the very least its a desgin that does still too easily play into that history of harm, intent or no. Again this is not an area where im qualified to speak with any kind of authority. I dont think its a good design and im glad it was changed.

The n-word use -

Not good, but this is one of those things that lots of people, even adults, would say regularly, not even that long ago. Especially if it was with a "soft a". Especially the phrase "whats up my n-". It was kinda a meme? Not like an internet meme, but it functioned kinda like one. People would get in lots of very inane arguments about the "soft a" in particular, but it was seen as "acceptable" in some ways to say the n-word with a soft a. It was dumb but that was how things were, and even still are in certain places. These arguments are inane and because they mostly serve to distract from the real issue at hand. That that kind of language coming from anyone who is white will mean something very different and has a lot more history of harm thats called upon. But this was a time when a lot of people were convinced "rasicim is over tho, obama is president". They were wrong and that idea was a reflection of privlage. But it was also how things were. Im not saying all this as an excuse, but to try to explain the differences between the past and now.

The ratmen -

Ohhh boy.... ok... im gonna try... look... have you seen the internet? Theres so much ratcore trash weeb a e s t h e t i c people out there. Its like a whole movement to associate with "cringe weeaboo" shit like japanese school uniforms while calling yourself a rat or a racoon or what ever. To me it feels like a cultural movement to reclaim things people were into as uninhibited youthhss. As a means of reclaiming that youth that was probably difficult because you are probably neurodivergent and/or queer. Simultaneously recognizing that you've become uncringable with age, while also presenting a new dynamic to the "cool and cute" side of things by drawing a worm in a lolita dress or what ever. This feels like the way more obvious read on the ratmen than... refferences to anti-japanese propaganda? Like sure, you could make the argument that its like... a subconcious thing, and stuff is a grand tapestry of influence, which is true. But if you start declaring things irrideemable because of vauge connections of influence (especially when they have easier reads) then your gonna run out of non-irridemable shit reallly fucking fast.

There is a lot to be said about "weeaboo" culture and how it was formed and continues to exist as a reflection of a very specific and limited section of japanese culture. And how that has played into a form of othering and dehumanization in certain cases. By the academic deffinition, non-japanese people being super into japanese anime and anime cultre is -cultural appropriation-. Anime in particular is already several layers of abstraction deep before it even gets the weeaboo treatment. And because of that it isnt always sensible, or respectful. This kinda applies to the whole comic and not just the ratmen, but in that it applies to like... everyone who draws in an anime style who isnt japanese.

Cultural exchange between japan and america is kind of just a thing at this point, and its an exchange that deffinatly isnt always -acurate- but theres kind of a long history of both countries taking and abstracting shit from each other to suit their own needs. Anime itself (as its widely understood) is that, osamu tezuka was influenced by disney to draw large cute expressive faces wayyy back when.

In a lot of ways i think its really cool that there is this crosscultural exchange, especially when its between niche subsubcultures. The kind of subcultures full of outcast weirdos. Proves we all have a lot in common with each other. Like its pretty clear ranfren draws on a lot of doujintype aesthetics, 2chan meme culture, and rpgmaker horror games. Both the comic itself and the presentation, being on neocities with gallerys of art, are reminicent of this. Theres a lot of this on neocities but its cool to see people styling their neocities gallerys and websites after the way japanese artists used to style theirs, pre-social media. For me it taps into some very formative memories of stumbling on some artists website that you couldn't read or properly navigate because it was in japanese and google translate was clunky and bad enough to basically be useless. But the art was beautiful and inspiring, and wasnt polished and professional which felt relatable, felt validating. Sometimes you saw fucked shit cause you didnt know what you were clicking on, but to me it was worth it. Is it bad to see fucked shit at a young age? Eh yeah..? But its kinda inevitable that you will see fucked shit. The world is like that right now, and trying to change it is important but its also important to be able to have methods of dealing with what we have. (Some people's methods of cope involve drawing and looking at pictures of cat boys being eviscerated) Anyways its better to see fucked shit in an environment that you have some control over. Thats kinda.. one of the big Points to art in the first place. And also some people, for various reasons, resonate with fucked shit. That doesnt make them inherently evil, its just like... everyone has their own way of dealing with darkness. Ranfren is a pretty fucked up comic, a dude keeps a human as a pet friend and he cant escape and is suffering and its a major plot point, thats just kinda played for laughs. Its dark and fucked up but in a funny and relatable way. thats why people resonate with it. I ranted a lot more about this in my last post (see also the video "why did we like elfin leid" by hazel on youtube) but just.... the immediate read of the ratmen is not "ah, the author of this is refferencing anti-japanese propaganda and thus is supportive of the belife that asians are not human and inferior." Its just... if you're reading a webcomic on neocities about weird anime cryptid boys, i feel like the associations your more likely to make with the rats is, "ah cool, some rat boys, relatable."

Swastika/manji -

think it was meant to be both a swastika on the right and manji on the left. but the fact that both are there does kinda remind me of how manji would frequently either get censored in america and/or become the source of edgy jokes, "neji is a nazi"* and whatever. Also drawing a swastika on something was the kind of surface level shit that lots of people did, purely because it was an easy way to try to seem like an edgy bassass and get a rise out of people. Its not good that people were like that, its bad that people didnt get the education to understand why doing that was bad. And it being so wide spread did give people who wanted to actually use it because they are nazis a very convenient cover story. But its a weak case to present one, especially if its from 2011, as proof someone currently(?) holds antisemetic beliefs. People who claim to use swastikas "as a joke" while actually holding white supremisct veiws are usually possible to spot by just like... observing what they do and say. While thats an exhausting thing to do because these people are fuckheads of the highest order, its an important thing to be able to do and understand if you want to fight for justice. This is a bit off topic too but relying only on iconography also allows these people to go stealth and do the whole "im not a nazi i dont have a big swastika tatoo" while they go on fox news and talk about how great eugenics is.

*since the point of all this is to provide context i will try to explain. The character Neji Hyuga, from Naruto has a manji on his forehead. Usually covered by his very cool ninja headband. But an episode where he takes it off was censored in the english release because a lot of people in the world have the immediate reaction of "oh fuck a swastika, like the nazis". However it was kind of an edgy "fun fact" to point this out and make jokes, both about the censorship and the fact that Neji has a "swastika" on his forehead. This kind of thing did then lead to more cultural awarness of manji and the origins of the swastika.

Incest and pedostuff -

I was gonna separate these two, but what i have to say kinda applies to them both. But in the wider world of fandom and reality i think they are separate issues, and the conflation of them i tend to see drives me a little nutty, i guess i get that its because of real world personal associations people tend to have, but when it comes to incest ships that become "popular", they seem to fill a very different "need" than young/old ships and shit... ahgggh it doesnt actually have anything to do with randal because he's stated to be under age so it this case its like yeah i guess they are under the same category. I just wish people would think more about why these things happen the way they do. I cant ask that of everyone, especially if its an uncomfortable topic and you dont like thinking about uncomfortable things. But considering why things happen and if there are reasons beyond "people are nasty" is worth doing if you can.

Ahh, i gotta say, taken at face value, the images that captain howdie drew... ah, when i saw the warnings and stuff, i was expecting worse? I am Not saying these are good things to have drawn, but. Almost equally weird shit happens in the actual comic. Randal and Luther have a really fucking weird relationship in canon because both of them are weird. They have weird power plays and do body horror and ??? And Luther is kinda controlling and domineering. But its part of their characterization that they are like this. In the comic there just isnt a framing of someone going "plz draw me some incest art of randal and luther kthnx"

this particular reaction of mine, is probably an instance of me being too online and too desensitized to artists and people im fond of having turned out to have been actual irl pedophiles or abusers so. I dont know. I dont like it. I understand if it turns people away from the comic because that kind of thing hits very personally with some people.

But again, i do feel the need to explain a bit about how the internet used to broadly treat underage characters and shipping.

For one thing people used to just... draw and write porn of characters who were minors, sometimes because they were also minors, sometimes not... and i dont think people were always doing it because they wanted to do bad things to real minors or what ever. The general mentality was more, "the character exists, i have a ship that pleases me. I will engage in what i think is the natural conclusion of that ship." Part of that i think also comes from there just being... less characters? Like obviously time is a thing and we are always adding and never subtracting "available" characters and ships. But if you were into anime/anime-esq stuff, there was just less of it. And a lot of the stuff that was localized and thus widly availible, and thus widly popular, and thus had a big fandom to engage in, was intended to younger folks, and thus had younger characters. So it was just kinda seen as, fine. I think people usually just thought of the characters as ageless entities. I do think its odd that so many people (still to this day too) have a compulsion to ship and write romance and junk, even at the expensse of socital norms. Im like ace/aro spectrum so yeah, i think its weird and dont fully "get it" for people to be that fixated on romance and resulting physical intimacy. But I saw the harry potter fandom back in the day, to say nothing of pre-castiel supernatural, and onecest. People were not really widely considering if any of it could have an effect on people or be used by actual pedophiles to harm real children. Im not saying it didnt happen, but the general idea of what a predetor would do to get at kids did not involve anything fandom related. I also do think the "lets be shocking" mentality comes into it for some people. People get told what they can and cant like by parents, teachers, religeon with little justification beyond "I/God said so". So it makes these kinds of things which have a taboo element to them feel "cool".

I guess part of the idea was also "if you are mature enough to be on these parts of the internet, you are mature enough to deal with some weird shit." In some ways i still think there is a shard of truth in this mindset. Just on a personal level its helpful to know your own limitations and recognize the type of stuff is likely to upset you. Like, even if you love, idk, lucky star or magica madoka or some shit, but are not comfortable seeing ecchi art of the girls, probably just avoid certain fandom spaces all together. Im not saying its "virtuous" to be able to handel seeing some shit or that its an inherent good that people have to do this. Im stating it as very obnoxious unsolicited advice. And all that said i think the need for spaces that are safe and free from shit online are very important. (As are semi-private spaces where you can like... collectivly vent, and spaces where you can be kinda fucked up.) And in modern times i take a lot of issue with "adult" fans with certain interests "taking over" media aimed at kids (mlp and the bronies is sort of an example of this, in certain ways, its complicated.)

I fucking hate that we've all been forced onto like 3 platforms for fandom and art shit. Especially twitter, twitter sucks dick. Especially if you're a kid. i dont like being like this, but honestly people under the age of 18 should not be on twitter. Not even because theres porn and gore and no tagging/filtering system. Twitter is just shit. Like the app itself is designed to fuck with your head in a very very damaging way and you cant really do anything to make it not do that. Damn, everybody should make a neocities, we can bring back webrings. its really fun and not difficult to maintain at. all. I Promise.

Also i said this in the last post but... pedobear was a popular(?) meme. It was this bear character that people would photoshop into pictures of cute child characters from anime and shit. The "joke" was more a style of subversive shock humor. Lots of people on 4chan were weirdos but a lot more were edgy teens just kinda looking to get a rise out of people because that was the "point" of the internet for a lot of people. "For the lulz" was the general rallying call. Was it good that one of the big meme characters of the day was a bear that wanted to molest anime children? No. And other popular meme characters who were also problematic? No, it was a symptom of things beyond most peoples control. Was it normalized? Yeah. Was it emblematic of multiple wider aspects of internet culture at the time? Yeah. Did the normalization also lead to an arms race of edge that eventually helped gamergate and the subsequent altright movement gain traction? Sort of. I think its silly to blame memes and media in general, or even internet culture as the sole cause for any of that. It all played a roll but the root causes runs a lot deeper. And i think it short sighted to lable any one thing as a source of evil while condemming everyone who associates with it. Shortsighted in the sense that i think to combat these things you have to try to understand the systems and contexts that lead to these evils in the first place. And when and how much these things are doing harm. And in what situations that harm is balenced.

Nevada-tan sweater -

i feel like the pedobear rant there kinda covers a lot of this but. Im here to try to give context so that is what i will do. I guess i just want to say again how common it was to have violent serial killer ocs. I had an oc who was a fake girl scout who offered people cookies and then killed them. Hilarious. Having an edgy refference to a real world tragedy is kinda par for the course in certain horror communities even to this day. Even real horror movies will do this. Its really not great that these things drag real world people into this. This is an instance of something that i greatly dislike because it does directly involve real world people. But its worth considering why people do this. Why there are people who develop parasocial relationships with killers and school shooters. Why these people get memed into become symbols and characters more than real people who commited evil acts. I mean for one thing people do this to just like, regular people, so it apparently just something humans like to do. But i want to post this comment from the reignbot video about nevada-tan which i think explains some important context of why this girl in particular was one that people might have latched on to (that vid is also good if you want the full real world context of everything)

People find this, relatable. Its messed up. but so many people are left behind by systems that are theoretically supposed to help people. People find some kind of comfort(?) in the horror. Another really good video related to this topic is the one reignbot did about people who idolize school shooters, she interveiws someone who used to be "on the inside" and that person has a lot of very valuable insight into this kind of mindset.

And i think the nevada sweater on Nyen is more of a refferance to this collective internet horror referance, especially with the anime, doujin circles, connotation. One that the type of person reading ranfren is likely to get and understand in some way. And i guess nyen is maybe just that kind of guy. Again it is not something i think is good, even as cope. But given everything else in the comic the refferance makes sense. And im internet poisoned so i knew what it was refferanceing as soon as i saw it so ive lived with it this long. Im still suprised people didnt know about this honestly. I am old.

Residential school/logs -

I mean yeah, this is insensitive. but... thats is kinda how... peoples minds work... you think about something, then maybe something happens, and you go back to thinking about the other thing. Like yeah, you have control over what you post, especially when you have a following its good to keep in mind how things will be percived just in general. But also like... sometimes i go from thinking gay thoughts to thinking about the texas abortion bill to thinking gay thoughts to thinking about the nature of evil in the hearts of humans to thinking gay thoughts. Its just kinda how our minds work, especially, trying to process tragic things can be really tough. And in general i am not fond of the trend that demands perfect sensitivity and seriousness about all topics lest you be cast as like... not caring at all and there for evil. Especially if the person in question is like an artist or some rando, someone who isnt aiming to be an "activist". (Im using that term very loosely,)

I mean in general there is so so much bad stuff, an insurmountable mountain of bad stuff and its all connected in the worst rat-nest of suffering. You gotta let yourself take a break, or you will burnout so fucking fast and not be able to tackle problems in an effective way when the oportunity arises.

Conclusion -

All and all, i think this document does a bad job presenting the issues that are present in and around randal's friends. Because it either doesnt know or doesnt care to explain the actual underlying issues with any of them because it seems too preoccupied with making captain howdie look as bad as possible. The reasons that yes, even though this shit was very normalized its still worth having a think over why it was normalized, what it meant and what it all means. And understanding that it being normalized meant very many people engaged with it and are still feeling fallout from that and records of that time are easily dug up. The document is either missing or choosing to ignore important context that readers are apparently unlikely to understand. And takes so many things in bad faith that it will be useless in encouraging change or a genuine apology or what ever the fuck people want. BaCk In My DaY we used to use callouts to go on 40 page tangents about the implications of shipping Sam and Dean or naming your oc "himeko" or what ever the fuck. And a lot of those were also full of misplaced frustration. But like... i feel like had to try to translate what the actual concerns were behind half the problems in this document. Someone who doesnt have their brain full of years of social justice arguments and talking points is gonna look at that doc and mostly go What are you people fucking talking about??? (Or they'll feel like they have take it at face value because they dont want to become tainted by enjoying -problematic- media) it also has the problem present in a lot of callout shit where it feels like half of it is someone going on a hunt because one thing pissed them off, and finding things to justify their being pissed off. This is especially evident in the case of digging up deleated (?) devientart stuff and reblogs. And the fucking.. logs. Again, you could probably do this with anything. What is the end goal here? People seem to be mad that this was "brushed under the rug" but what exactly is achived by dragging it back out? If that stuff hadnt been deleted people would 100% be clamoring for them to delete it because leaving it up would be perpetuating the forms of harm that it does contain. People also dont tend to think to give premptive apologies for those sorts of things either, because it was normalized at the time and has been hidden from most people's veiw. And bringing it up is probably just gonna implicate you. And again, if you lack a certain kind of understanding it will be very difficult to word any kind of an apology properly. It's already bad we gonna have to see her bitching around but if she gets a plot and characters like Luca who never got any form of development don't, I'm going to personally insult everyone who wrote the script and I'm not even joking. I just don't get one thing, if wtfock knows s4 was bad, that we all hate her, that the views dropped like no other season because of her, if even Romi knows the season sucked, then why the hell aren't they listening to fans and not bringing her back? I don't even feel bad for the "actress" (I refuse to call her actress, that would be disrespectful to people who actually have talent), she read the script and knew what it was about and still decided to take the role. She can't possibly think that she's any good 😅 This is a clear example of money above dignity. Excusing her and wtfock by saying oHhH but she needs a job 😔 Let's be real here, when did wtfock ever gave a fuck about any of the actors? If they cared, they would have give the season to Noa or wait for Nora's season instead of doing it. So what is it about Romi that they can't let go of? Because I certainly don't understand. If she was talented, I would understand. The Viktor's actor e.g, I hate Viktor but the actor is so talented, even thought his appearance made me mad, I was still able to enjoy it because he gave an amazing performance. So I don't really understand this keeping Romi/K**o thing and the "actress" is just proving how tone deaf she is to still being around knowing of fans feel about her character.

They really think that giving us a sobbe or yasmina selfie is going to quell the waters. They dont get that they themselves trained the fandom to compartmentalize the characters away from the show. They literally were the catalyst to how the fandom digest wtfock content. ITS LITERALLY THEIR FAULT. At this point I wont feel bad when they get drag for keeping her around because they have been told time and time again that having her be anything but wallpaper would cause the dragging again. And I know the crew gets all in their feelings and some of the cast do too and think we are being unfair to Romi but at the end of the day Romi has not done herself any favors. By never addressing her weird insta behavior during BLM while depicting a character that harbors racial bias she threw herself under the bus. A great example of this is Noa and Moyo. Noa use to actively rag on Moyo for not being accepting of Robbe’s sexuality so it was very comforting for the actor to really separate Moyo’s tendencies from Noa. Same with Viktor and Jonathan. Romi did the exact opposite she aligned herself with Kato’s belief even if she did it mistakenly and never rectified the issue similar to how wtfock is behaving concerning s4. So now Romi’s behavior just mirrors that of wtfock’s behavior. One thing tho when Romi took the role it was presented very differently so I will say that in her defense. It was never intertwined with racism. Wtfock thinks they can love bomb us out of our anger. Well I mean they can try I am not saying no to a Sobbe birthday video hahahaha but it probably wont change my opinion hahah.

“Damn.” Andromeda whispered as she got her test result back. “I really thought I nailed it this time.”

“At least you got a D+ this time.” Scott said, having glanced over when she spoke.

“Still.” Andromeda groaned as she slumped her head against the table. “I hate science… and math.”

“You do well on the labs.” Scott said, shaking his head.

“Only because I have you helping. Once I get home I can't remember what all this gibberish means.” Andromeda mumbled.

“Well I guess I should be glad you’re not cheating on your tests.” Scott said, smiling down at her.

“I miss biology.” Andromeda said, pouting as she stared at her paper. “Who’s bright idea was it to mix math and science together… I swear if you answer that I will knock those sunglasses off your face.”

“If you want I could tutor you.” Scott offered, however, that just made Andromeda frown more.

“I dont know.” She sighed. “I don't think my parents would like it if I brought a boy over to the house.”

This seemed to make Scott blush and Andromeda smirked. “Don't flatter yourself, my parents are just… special.”

“Oh well maybe if you ask Jean she’d be happy to help, she's just as good at chemistry as I am.” Scott looked at Andromeda and the face she was making made him trail off a bit. “Jean’s really nice, you know.”

“My parents are really really special.” Andromeda said, grabbing her pencil and proceeding to doodle on her test. “I’ll think about it… what's up with you and Jean anyways?”

“What do you mean?” Scott asked, looking at her just as confused as Jean had been when Andromeda asked her a similar question.

“Are you guys like together? Are you technically foster siblings? How does that even work?” Andromeda asked, trying hard not to laugh at Scott’s reaction. After all, Jean had only been here a few weeks now.

“I um no, no she's just a friend. It's just that… shouldn’t you be asking Jean these questions?” Scott asked.

“Yeah but I just like to see you squirm.” Andromeda teased though for some reason she couldn’t help but feel a little hurt. When Jean had said they were just friends it sounded genuine, when Scott said it it seemed like it had a double meaning. Scott let out a small huff making Andromeda focus back on the conversation.

“Jean has parents but she lives with us because my foster dad specializes in kids with… special conditions.” Scott said though he seemed hesitant.

“Huh oookay.” Andromeda mumbled, getting up as the bell rang.

"Well what about you?" Scott asked catching up to her, taking her by surprise.

"What about me?" Andromeda asked, adjusting her backpack.

"You and toa- Todd. What's up with you two?"

"First of all, toad is a messed up nickname. Second he's sweet but nah he's not my type just a friend." Andromeda smiled up at him, noticing his little frown. "You're gonna have to try harder than that if you wanna tease me."

Andromeda patted his arm and turned down the hallway to her next class.

Andromeda rolled her eyes as she noticed Duncan and Scott having a cock fight during their mile run. Apparently Scott wasn't the only one who seemed to have a thing for Jean. She shook her head as she saw them attempt to run the track as fast as possible.

"Hey, do you mind if I go ahead?" Andromeda asked jogging lightly next to Todd.

"Sure." Todd wheezed.

"Cool see you at the finish line." Andromeda said as she took off she needed to run a whole lap if she were to out run them. Piece of cake.

"Excuse me!" She shouted as she got close to the two.

Scott was shocked but polite enough to move out of the way. Duncan however didn't and Andromeda bumped into him making him stumble.

"I said excuse me." She said as she took off trying hard not to laugh.

She made it around the track pretty easily and soon enough had caught up with the two boys again. She made it a point to stay in front of both of them, picking up speed whenever one of them tried to outrun her, which mostly ended up being Duncan. To really rub it in their face during the last lap Andromeda took off sprinting leaving both in the wind.

“Time. Nice job Williams.” The teacher scribbled on their clipboard.

Andromeda nodded and turned to see Duncan and Scott cross the finishing line both looking a bit winded. She made a mental note to thank her brother for making her practice running to build up her endurance. Andromeda made her way to the vending machine to grab some water bottles and settled in the grass next to the track as she waited for the others to finish.

“How are you able to survive that?” Todd asked weakly as he plopped down next to her, Andromeda rolled the water bottle towards him.

“I like to run?” Andromeda offered.

“You’re not even sweating!” Todd said, squeezing his shirt to get rid of the wetness.

“Sweating is gross so I don't do it.” Andromeda said casually, Todd stared at her wondering if she was being serious. “I’m kidding, good genes I guess.”

“That’s not fair.” Todd huffed while taking a drink.

“Hey.” Andromeda said, nudging him as she changed the subject. “My brother wants to go to the mall with his friends this weekend, wanna meet up there?”

“I dunno.” Todd mumbled.

“Come on, please. I'm gonna have to babysit a bunch of 12 year old boys. Besides, you need to get out of that scary house every now and then.”

“I’ll think about it.”

“Alright class back to the gym, time for some dodge ball.” The teacher called out.

Andromeda got up and noticed that Scott was staring at them with a slight frown on his face, weird. Before Andromeda could get inside the teacher stopped her.

“Williams a word.” They said walking towards the bleachers.

“Um okay.”

“You do pretty good time on your runs.” They said and Andromeda nodded wondering what that had to do with anything. “I think you’d be great on the track team, tryouts are at the end of the week. I think you should join.”

“Oh.” Andromeda blinked trying to process the compliment. “I um… I’m not sure if I can.”

“Sure you could kid.”

“No I mean… thanks teach but um I’d have to ask my parents.” Andromeda said, feeling embarrassed.

“I see. Well, here's to hoping they say yes.” They said, patting Andromeda's shoulder.

As Andromeda walked to go stand next to Todd she noticed that Scott seemed to be looking at her curiously. So she did what any normal person would, hit him with the dodgeball first chance she got.

“Alright I’ll be back in two hours.” Their mother said as she parked the car in front of the mall. “Watch him Andromeda.”

“Yes ma’am.” Andromeda said getting out of the car and stood next to her brother.

“Shall we?” Adonis asked, staring up at her.

“Let’s go.” She said walking into the mall where a small group of Adonis friends were waiting for them.

Andromeda looked up at all the menus at the food court wondering what type of junk food she wanted to sneak.

“The chili dogs are pretty good.” Todd said standing next to her.

“Hey you made it.” Andromeda smiled.

“Ohhh is that your boyfriend?”

“Keep it up Tommy and I’ll tell Heather B you have a crush on her.” Andromeda said, making Tommy frown and stick his tongue out at her.

“So what are you gonna get?” Todd asked.

“Eh think I might just get a corndog easier to carry and shop with.” Andromedas shrugged.

“So Darkholme actually let you leave to have fun?” Andromeda asked as they walked down the halls of the mall.

“Nah snuck out but doubt she’ll notice anyways.” Todd shrugged.

“Yup I know the feeling.” Andromeda mumbled.

“Huh?”

“Nothing.” Andromeda said casually she glanced around and narrowed her eyes. “Hey, keep an eye on them, okay?”

“Okay.” Todd said as Andromeda slipped away from them.

“I sure hope your foster dad teaches you manners Summers.” Andromeda said, popping up behind Scott who had been peering by a corner.

Scott jumped and turned to see Andromeda, his eyebrows raised in shock.

“Watcha doin? Spying on me?” Andromeda asked.

“I um no… no.” Scott tried to defend himself.

“Mmmhhhmmm.” Andromeda hummed leaning against the wall.

“You said your parents wouldn’t like it if you brought a boy home.”

“Yeah well technically Todd didn’t come to my home so I fail to see what you're getting at.” Andromeda said.

Scott opened and closed his mouth like a fish. Andromeda patted his cheek, smiling slyly at him.

“You’re cute when you’re confused.” She said as she walked away.

Scott shook his head wondering if he’d ever be able to figure her out.

I mean not at our age or even in highschool but eventually scrooge will die and you'll be richer because you'll probably invent something that makes you rich before that. The Untamed, episode 46 - watching notes

Full disclosure: I'm not in a particularly good mood today. Have you seen that "no productivity. Only guild." Meme flying around? That's me today :|

Hopefully this will distract me (though distraction was the problem in the first place 🙈)

I apologise for any typos you'll finde in this post 😅

To recap, the last thing I learned was that apparently, Jiggy married his own sister because Jin Guangshan was a scumbag who raped more women than he could possibly remember

I was told by several people that this episode is their favourite. No pressures or anything :D

The way someone is dragging up Jiggy's secrets has a lot of poetic justice to it. Everyone is outraged and gossiping. Consensus is reached quickly. Kinda makes me feel that that someone (who probably also wrote the letter to jgy) knows exactly how to use the sect world's worst qualities as a weapon

So many conflicting emotions

Thanks to a friendly anon, I know that these three bows together are marriage thing! 😭😭😭

So yeah, they're married now. I dont make the rules :')

Somehow, this feels like them asking wwx's foster family's blessing

And now I'm imagining Shijie smiling back at them gently and I'm crying 🥺

And by God, I love lwj's gentle teasing :')

This whole scene, he's so soft! 😭

And it think that Wei Wuxian probably thought that he'd never get to step into Lotus Pier again. But here, he can finally say his goodbyes to his Shijie properly. He can heal! 🖤

And again, I cannot stress enough how wonderful that is! And how rare and precious in a show like this. So often character's get put through unimaginable trauma, but they either brush it off no problem or the show/movie ends immediately after the main action and you are left to imagine the number it did on the character's psyche. There are so rarely fantasy shows that really dive into the emotional fallout the plot has on their characters and then give them time to heal. Thus show does both and I'm so goddamn overjoyed my it!

Come to think of it, it reminds me of a very good hurt/comfort fic 🤷‍♀️

Jiang Cheng pleae, fir once, try not to be angry immediately when you're hurting :(

He still takes special offence that lwj is there. Makes me wonder if he still feels like wwx chooses lwj over the Jiang sect and is still hurt by it 😔 (note that at the same time, he reminds wwx that he's very much not a member of the Jiang clan anymore. God, the man has not worked through his own feelings ...)

For once, as much as I love it when lwj defends wwx (especially when it's not against any physical harm, but because he doesn't want wwx to be hurt emotionally) I think him interfering with this particular conflict does not help

Okay sorry, but no! lotus pier was not destroyed because wwx saved lwj in that cave. That was just an excuse for the Wen sect. They would have come eventually anyway

So there's my answer

He's still hurt because he feels wwx chooses anyone else over his family, which is to say him

And he probably can't understand because their positions are so different. The (future) sect leader and the son of a (dead) servant and a rogue cultivator who never felt quite like he belonged 😔

It's so goddamn tragic how much between these two was destroyed simply because they have such a different status in society and could never quite understand each other's perspective

And again, wwx just takes it 💔

Until, that is, lwj's honour gets besmirched

Don't fight in front of Shijie 🥺

Jiang Cheng's every action screams that he still loves his brother and that amidst all that pain for his lost family, is also deep betrayal and grieve for the brother he thought he could always count on 🥺💔

Can we appreciate for a second how much this shot tells us? From Jiang Cheng's angry desperation, to Wei Wuxian's quite acceptance of his rage (which must be so confusing to Jiang Cheng and probably hurt him even more. Because fighting is always how these two resolved their issues!) to Lan Wangji who is in full on protective mode (which I find more than heartwarming,but still think probably isn't helpful rn)

He ... what?

I still don't quite understand when exactly wwx's lack of golden core shows. Why does he have a nosebleed here?

Huh, this episode was a roller coaster. you guys did NOT exaggerate! I loved it to pieces. I'm floored once more by all the actor's performances. Wen Ning revealed a lot about his character, Jiang Cheng broke my heart, Lan Wangji made it melt and Shijie is still able to make me bawl in an instant. But ... I'm not left with a bitter feeling. Sure, jiang Cheng and wei Wuxian havebt reconciled, but the truth is the first step to even have that possibility. Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji are both healing and whatever happens in the last 4 (4!!!😭) episodes, I'm not dreading it that much right now. I feel like we're climbing upwards :)

i hated this so fucking much bc my 2 am bitch-ass didnt want to read a recap thats probably longer than any slowburn out there

After the Walkers ate pizza, Lily began to practice her role as the angel Gabriel for her school nativity. Despite being only five years old, Lily was a perfectionist and took every little thing she did very seriously.

Drake and Camille tried not to laugh as they watched their daughter turn part of the living room into her stage. They had the scripts in their hands - the teachers encouraged the parents to help their children practice - and they waited patiently as Lily put together the finishing touches.

She had found a pair of angel wings in the wardrobe. They were a little tatty but Camille was going to buy her new wings anyway. Lily put on the tatty wings to get into character.

She had placed her baby sister Luna on the centre of the rug. Luna had been given the most important practice role which was baby Jesus. Drake was the practice narrator as he always did funny voices when reading aloud. He always got into his role and Lily relished bedtime stories because Drake treated it like a performance. Camille was the practice Mary, naturally.

'Mommy, you need to sit on the rug,' Lily instructed her. Camille smiled and moved from the sofa to sit cross legged on the rug. Lily handed her a blue towel. 'And put this on your head.'

Drake smirked and watched as Camille draped the blue towel over her head.

'Wow, you look just like her,' he teased. Camille rolled her eyes and arranged herself to look demure and innocent, like the Virgin Mary.

'Okay, daddy, start!' Lily said.

Drake cleared his throat. 'Many years ago, a miracle took place. A girl called Mary was called upon to become the mother of -'

'Daddy.'

Drake stopped and looked at Lily. 'Yes baby?'

Lily bit her lip. 'Can you do a big voice instead?'

Camille sniggered. Drake blinked. 'Uh.. What do you mean?'

Lily's eyebrows furrowed together as she thought to herself. 'Like.. A big voice like the narrator in Hercules!'

Drake thought of the Disney film Hercules. He recalled it well. It was very Morgan Freeman-esque.

'Does the school want that kind of voice?' he asked.

'No but I think it would be so fun!' *Lily explained, jumping up and down.

Drake chuckled. 'Okay, whatever you want.'

He fixed Camille and Lily with a mischievous look, raising his eyebrow. '

You go girls..' he crooned, mimicking the narrator from Hercules. Lily squealed and Camille held back laughter. She loved how good a father Drake was. He was never afraid to be silly.

Soon, it was Lily's lines. She cleared her throat and threw her hand up in the air, sweeping it across dramatically.

'MARY!' she cried. 'You are going to have a baby!'

Camille adopted a shocked expression and read her line. 'Who are you?'

Lily's voice rose high as she read her script. 'I am the angel Gabriel!'

'An angel?!'

Lily nodded eagerly. 'An angel from.. From.. Mommy, what does that say?'

She held out her script and pointed to the word. Camille smiled. 'Heaven,' she told her softly.

Lily grinned. 'Heaven!'

Drake secretly thought that this script was too hard for five year olds but he wasn't going to rain on her parade. He would just privately bring it up to the teachers.

The practice went on for an hour. Lily read slowly, getting used to the words. She didn't have many lines at all, none of the children did. The narrator was to be her teacher while a big portion of the show was dedicated to carols. But Lily's lines were the most important.

When Jesus was born, Lily focused her attention on Luna, who was playing with the edge of the rug.

'Mary..' Lily said gravely, ‘You have had a baby! His name - Luna, stop moving - is Jesus - Luna, stop moving!'

Lily crouched down to stop Luna from attempting to crawl away. 'Luna, you are Jesus!' she cried in exasperation.

Camille picked up Luna and settled her in her lap. Luna gurgled, ignoring the frustrated look on Lily's face. Sometimes, Lily reminded Camille of Lily's godfather Bertrand, in that the two of them took everything seriously and everything had to be just right. This was a big deal for her and the pressure she put on herself was too much sometimes.

'You're doing great baby,' Drake told Lily, trying to calm her down. 'Such a good angel.'

Lily smiled weakly and focused again on the script. Luna watched her sister and practice went on with no more hiccups.

The next morning was Saturday. While Lily watched an animated Christmas film about Jesus for preparation, Drake was outside looking up at the Manor. Camille saw him through the window and joined him outside, wrapping her scarf around her to fight the chill.

'What are you doing?' she asked.

Drake frowned up at the Manor. 'I'm studying the roof to see how feasible it is to cover it in fairy lights..'

'Ah, Mr Christmas' first task!' Camille teased.

Drake nudged her arm with his. 'I told you it would look like Rudolph threw up.'

'True, you did. Just don't be like Chevy Chase and fall off the roof..' Camille said. 'I don't want to spend Christmas in a hospital ward.'

Drake chuckled. 'You underestimate me, Mrs Walker! I have one thing that Chevy Chase doesn't have in that film.'

'Which is?'

Drake pointed to his head and gave her a knowing look. 'Common sense. '

Camille giggled and snuggled into him, looking up at the roof. Drake pressed a kiss on top of her head, enjoying being close to her.

'You're getting help to put them up, right?' Camille asked.

'I'll ask Liam and Leo,' Drake told her.

'Not Maxwell?'

Drake stared at Camille with wide eyes. 'There's no way in hell I'm letting that guy up on our roof!'

Camille giggled. 'Okay, stupid suggestion. So, lights on the roof. What else are you planning?'

Drake smiled and moved to stand behind her. Wrapping his arms around her body, he held her close.

'Definitely mistletoe on the front door,' he murmured in her ear. 'Mistletoe everywhere in fact.'

Camille's mouth quirked up at the corner. 'You dont need excuses to kiss me, Drake,' she said.

Drake's lips brushed her jawline, making her skin break out in goosebumps. 'I know. I just want every opportunity.'

Camille turned around to kiss him deeply. 'More where that came from,' she whispered when they parted.

Drake twirled her around so they were both facing the manor again. 'I've got a surprise for Lily later,' he said. 'It'll be the start of the Walker Family Christmas.'

Camille snuggled into his chest, feeling his heart beat against her back. 'I'm so excited,' she told him. 'Our family.'

'Lily, baby, do you want to come downstairs?' Camille shouted. 'Daddy's got a surprise for you.'

Drake and Camille laughed at the sound of pounding feet running down the stairs. Lily jumped down the last step. 'Surprise?' she asked.

Camille jostled Luna in her arms and beckoned for Lily to follow her parents through to the living room. Lily was dressed in a fluffy purple sweater and pink leggings with silver sparkles. She had a Christmas onesie but she was saving that for special.

Drake smiled softly and gestured for Lily to sit down by the fireplace with him. 'Okay Lils,' he began. 'Have you ever heard of a yule log?'

Lily nodded eagerly. 'Yeah the chocolate ones! Have we got a chocolate yule log?'

Drake chuckled and shook his head. 'No honey. A real yule log actually isn't made of chocolate. It's a special log and I've found it!'

Lily wrinkled her nose. 'Why is it special?'

Drake gently pulled Lily onto his lap and settled his chin on top of her head. 'Well, we burn this special log on Christmas Eve and we keep it burning through the twelve days of Christmas,' he explained. 'Then, you keep a piece of the log for next year. This piece will bring good luck to the home and everyone who lives in it.'

'Do we do anything with the piece?' Lily asked.

'We burn it too,' Drake told her. 'And we then take a new piece. The cycle continues.'

'Ohhh.. So we have good luck for the whole year?'

'Damn right,' Drake said. 'How cool is that?'

Lily looked around the room. 'Where is it?'

Camille picked up the log that was on the table and showed it to Lily. Lily gently ran her finger along it and whispered, 'Magic..'

Drake felt his heart tug. His own father had celebrated the Pagan tradition of the Yule Log. It was always their activity to go out and find that special log and it was something Drake looked forward to every year. Now that Lily was old enough to appreciate it, Drake had decided that the Yule Log could be their own family tradition.

'So we burn it on Christmas Eve,' Lily recited, 'for twelve whole days. And then good luck.'

'Sounds fun, right?' Camille asked her.

Lily nodded.

'You know, my daddy used to burn the Yule Log with me,' Drake said wistfully. 'It was always magical.'

'Grandpa Jackson,' Lily said, her eyes focused on the log.

Drake squeezed her hand. 'Yeah, Lils. Grandpa Jackson.'

He felt Camille rest her hand on his back. Without her saying a word, Drake knew she was there for him.

'What else did you and Grandpa Jackson do?' Lily asked. 'Can we do other things you did together?'

Drake felt surprise at her words. This was the first time Lily had shown deep interest. Sure, she asked about Jackson and liked to see photos of him but Drake felt that now she was getting older, Lily was understanding more.

'Of course we can,' Drake said, his voice cracking. 'He'd love that.'

Even though Jackson had been dead for years, Drake still believed his father was around. He wasn’t religious in the slightest, but that faint hope that lit up his heart when he thought about his dad made him feel close to him. The Fourth of July and Christmas were the two occasions that Drake loved because those were the occasions his own dad had enjoyed.

He often thought about what Jackson would be like with his granddaughters. He imagined his deep laugh as he played with them on the floor. He would call Lily ‘little lady’ because that’s what Jackson used to call Drake’s sister when she was small. He would tickle Luna and make her laugh her little gurgling laugh.

Drake imagined Lily settled in the crook of Jackson’s arm, her legs up on his knees, as he read her favourite story aloud to her, doing all the voices. Jackson always did the voices.

That was why Drake always did the voices when he read to Lily too.

context (very important!): I pretty much binge-read an entire tumblr user’s meta posts and I found them interesting and very informative.

I also read through their salt tag and now I’m compelled to gather my thoughts together considering the literal title I’ve held for months now is “Hawks is a lov member already”. I’m extremely socially awkward, even on this online platform, so I’m not going to mention the aforementioned tumblr user’s name because I’m too anxiety-ridden to try to contact them. This is in no way shape or form an attack on the person’s opinions nor their character. It’s me... rambling about my thoughts about their opinions at 4 am.

Is it defending myself? Well, not really, because I don’t feel personally attacked. Just because we have a difference of opinion doesn’t mean we have to resort to attacking each other. I found their opinions thought-provoking and wanted to pick my own brain... I picked this time purposely so nobody would see this post :eyes: so like uhm yeah

Well, in fanon it would be such a fun idea to play around with. Personally I think there’s potential for League of Villain interactions with Hawks. I would LOVE to see Hawks interacting with the other pro heroes, but the only pro-to-pro interaction we get with Hawks is between Hawks and Endeavor. Because the atmosphere between the pro-heroes feels... disconnected.

Now, hear me out.

Let’s contrast it with the idealized version of hero society provided in future fics. Or hell, comparing the top ten pro heroes to Class 1-A itself. We want to think all the heroes are friendly with each other and have some sort of camaraderie with each other

But Horikoshi doesn’t present it like that.

The closest thing to that we get is Endeavor and Hawks. Other than that, the atmosphere between hawks and the other heroes seem more strained or tense (the whole miruko hawks thing is fanon). And even then, it’s... well... Endeavor and Hawks don’t truly know each other. Hawks only knows the public perception and image of Endeavor, which is the only thing he’s been given while Endeavor doesn’t truly knows Hawks either. I’m not saying the interactions are fake, but... would Hawks be acting the way he was if he knew about Endeavor’s past?

No. I don’t have any predictor to how differently Hawks would act, but I definitely sense there’d be a lot of disappointment and loss of respect for the man he was rooting for. To what extent? Would Hawks just be in complete disbelief? Or would he react with immediate anger? There are parallels to Hawks and Todoroki Rei--both were picked from the crowd and had their lives controlled because of their “value” determined by Endeavor/The Hero Commission respectively.

But honestly from an objective standpoint, I have nothing to go off of other than the fact that Hawks deeply respects and idolizes Endeavor the most out of anyone in the manga we’ve seen and the fallout of that would be of an equally shattering magnitude...

Ahh i went off on a tangent. the point is... do we really know Hawks? Does Hawks ever get a chance to just.. be himself? Maybe we see a bit of that shine when he’s alone with Endeavor, but as we saw clearly in chapter 186 he puts on a care-free facade for his fans. But in reality... he’s always working because he’s one of the hero commission’s greatest assets.

and... here’s where our opinions clash. I truly, in the depths of my heart, believe that Hawks is building a reality where heroes have more free time comes from a more selfish desire for himself. Don’t get me wrong--I don’t want to disservice what Hawks has done for society. But also it feels like he’s the type who overworks himself because he feels moral obligation to society when... technically he doesn’t owe anything to society.

Yes, in superhero shows and whatnot, it’s usually a positive trait that “hey this person’s been born with an amazing power and they’ve chosen to use it for the greater good! Look what they’re sacrificing!!!” But let’s say theoretically that person decides “hey i don’t want to be a hero i just want to be a writer!” Are they morally wrong for deciding not to be a hero even though they would theoretically be good at it? Even though it’s not something they want for themselves?

Because I don’t think Hawks wants to be a hero. But he also doesn’t want people to die. He’s tied himself with these moral obligations to the point where he can’t leave now because he feels it would be selfish of him to. And that is speculation, but Horikoshi isn’t exactly spelling it out for us! So, that’s how I interpret Hawks’ character. Yes, he is a true hero in that he wants to save as many people as he can, even at the cost of his pride his dignity his fucking freedom...

but also, he never wished for that. he never asked to be one who has to deal with all of this. But now that he is, what choice does he have?

So, yes, we agree on that. But I also feel that his personal desire plays as big of a part. Because we, as humans, naturally want things for ourselves. Our personal desire for ourselves shouldn’t be downplayed at all! That’s why I believe his inner thoughts are worded “more free time” rather than “make society more safe”. Because he has his priorities! He wants the best of both worlds-- it’s a form of negotiation. He can still play the hero and less lives would be taken but he can also having some breathing room for himself like he’s always wanted.

To free himself just a little bit from the stressful life of being a hero.

There is nothing wrong with being motivated by personal desires. Hawks is one of the most grounded heroes we’ve seen--I think he’s cynical enough that he’s self aware of this selfish desire for a freer life. And it’s selfish to him only because he knows that it would never happen without the expense of a few lives-- lives that he knew he would never forgive himself for letting slip.

I think it’s a toxic mindset.

Because as heroic as placing others above yourself... that attitude is completely unhealthy and I don’t think it should be celebrated. What I want to see from Hawks’ natural progression as a character is recognizing that it’s okay to prioritize yourself. Hell, Midoriya learned this during the summer training arc and failed to retain that lesson during the Overhaul arc! THESE HEROES DON’T TAKE CARE OF THEMSELVES!!! (ok i get midoriya’s trying).

And if it’s selfish to desire more free time for yourself off from work, is it really that wrong of someone to do so? To want more control over your life? To want to do things you want to do rather than what others want you to do?

What does this have to do with villain Hawks? Well, I think a large desire for villain hawks is because it shows the departure of that mindset! Hawks doesn’t need to be confined to his hero persona anymore, he can finally do things he wants to do and be the free bird he’s always wanted to be.

But him becoming a complete villain is... far-fetched. This myself I recognize. I’ve only written villain!hawks once and that was because he snapped after the hero commission executed shigaraki and dabi as a show of power rather than going through the effort of trying to re-integrate the men back into hero society. I don’t want to go too deep because this isn’t the point I’m trying to make, but Hawks realizes how power-obsessed society is to the point where he doubts the legitimacy of the hero commission itself and what they do for society and its people.

But, again, that’s not going to ever happen in canon so I won’t bring it up another time. The point I was trying to make is yeah, you’re right that Hawks would never become a villain. He wouldn’t become a murderer- if he does, he definitely needs more incentive than what we can go off from canon.

And ohhh boy here we go, reaching the erm elephant in the room.

Is Villain!Hawks just an excuse to write hotwings? And what is the plausibility of Hawks turning to villainy? Would Endeavor being exposed as a child abuser be the trigger if Hawks were to turn villain at some point in the story?

Eh...

I don’t know if I even want to go into the whole “this is just an excuse to make hawks and dabi evil boyfriends” because I’ve never used villain!hawks as justification for that personally. And I’m actually not as attached to hotwings as I am to something like shigahawks... I don’t have any points to counteract this other than my desire to see Hawks interact with the entire league. Because it would be fun to see him interact in an environment he’s not wholly familiar with. With Endeavor or the other heroes or even the hero commission, he has some semblance of control or understanding so he thinks/acts like he knows what’s going on.

Meanwhile, the League is a huge mess and they don’t have their shit together and wouldn’t it be funny to see Hawks as a part of their crew suffering with them!!! Well, that’s bias. My bias. For fanon. And for the jokes. So sad :(

So... I don’t just want to see more Dabi and Hawks interaction. I want to see more Hawks and League interaction. or just more hawks and anyone interactions overall. maybe thats all i crave

Actually going through the points one by one, let’s talk plausibility.

I already talked about villain!hawks being a... departure from Hawks’ faults in his own character. But it is pretty extreme, I’ll admit. If Hawks were ever to join the League of Villains, he’d probably never use killing as first resort. As we’ve seen in chapter 220, it’s not like the League targets only heroes... but i get the salt tag was made like 5 months ago so it’s not like new information hasn’t been released at the time of posting.

Reminds me of domestichobgoblins’ shigadabihawks fic where shigaraki even acknowledges “Whatever bullshit you’ve been telling Dabi, you aren’t a killer either, are you? So what, exactly, am I supposed to do with you?” And you know? The both are you are right. Hawks isn’t a killer and he wouldn’t become a killer willingly... unless he was pushed by some other greater force but I’m not here to address any of that. He could still provide support to the league in other ways, arguably, or just joining the league could be some kind of message to the heroes or supporters of hero society.

You are right to a degree. Hawks’ sole motivator to become a villain wouldn’t be because “OH ENDEAVOR IS AN ABUSER GUESS I GOTTA TURN EVIL NOW”.

Okay pushing past that, so why would Hawks be motivated to become a villain? In canon? I’ve already warped a lot of this post with my own fanon but I’m trying to keep within the realm of canon for this point specifically since you could take a second to push Hawks over the edge in fanon and be done with it. But why would Horikoshi specificially do it?

The fact is hero society sucks. A lot. And I think Hawks recognizes that fact being the most “grounded” and cynical of the bunch. His views and visions of hero society aren’t warped by fantasies and such (which is probably why he doesn’t like All Might...) so he understands what’s happening around him. He understands the mechanisms of hero society and how “valuable” quirks are viewed as in their capitalist society.

But also, he doesn’t have that much of an option other than trying to lessen the burden placed upon him. Because he’s a single man, and even with his influence, he can’t change society. He’s powerless to do so, even considering who he is. He’s seen as a role model to those in society, but it’s because of his ranking that ironically fuels why people even look up to him: denouncing that would be kind of silly considering it’s the reason why people would listen in the first place.

And this is the point where I say... Shigaraki had a point. Hero society is flawed. It shouldn’t be so reliant on one person to carry it all.

But also hero society itself is bullshit. The ranking system? Horrible. The fact that the hero commission views them as tools for their own disposal? Horrible. The mere fact they basically bribe Hawks into becoming a hero? Like? “Hey kid you’re the best at being a hero so that’s what you should do. we’re only going to give you financial support if you become a hero so you might as well” like what is Hawks supposed to do in that sort of situation? Of course he’s going to succumb to the pressure.

I don’t believe in this whole “sacrifice for the greater good” bullshit. If Hawks wants to be a hero, that’s a whole another story, but if Hawks doesn’t, then he shouldn’t have been forced into that role. It’s about agency--it’s about letting him decide for himself if it’s what he wants to do. And it’s... a gray area for morality. “It’d be selfish for him to let people die!” Who is in the right to say whether or not he should use his “powers” for others’ sake? Me? You? The Hero commission?

So if Horikoshi goes down the path of “hey hero society is extremely bad and needs to change” and Hawks recognizes the League as a proponent for that change, then with a lot of development, it’s plausible in the future. I understand that Hawks, as of what we currently see, is too upheld by his own morals to ever even think about crossing that line, but people change. Hell, you recognized how the High End arc changed Endeavor and made miles of metas about it.

So, is it really far-fetched to say villain!Hawks is just a dream?

Maybe I’m a fool or an optimist, but I’d love to see Horikoshi take that path. Not because I’m horny for evil boyfriends, but it’d be a nice change of pace and we’d get to see a complete contrast of Hawks’ experiences. And it wouldn’t be easy-it’d had to be done right. Just like Endeavor’s redemption arc--if Horikoshi is still planning it. (Let’s be honest: High End Arc was not a formal redemption. I think it was Horikoshi letting the readers know “there might be something worth saving in Endeavor!” but i digress because i don’t care enough about endeavor (his character and redemption has 0 appeal to me and thats FINE. YOU DO YOU AND I DO ME, I only talk about him when it’s essential to talk about the influence he has on characters I DO care about).

As to why people like to characterize the moment Hawks decides to quit being a villain being attributed to Hawks learning Endeavor is an abuser...

The fallout, as mentioned earlier, could vary. A lot. Hawks really looked up to Endeavor when he was young. Again, shattering to find out something so nasty about the one you idolized.

To know that the one Hawks looked up used his wife just like how the hero commission used Hawks. Like an object or tool at their disposal.

Would he be vengeful or spiteful towards Endeavor personally? To others, probably yes. To me? I’m kind of in the “eh” skeptical ballpark so I guess we somewhat agree on that. To me, Endeavor being exposed as an abuser would crush that small slither of childish hope that hero society represents something bigger than themselves. Did Hawks ever get to have the childhood Deku had where he was still cheering on the heroes from behind the screen, or did it get crushed just as quickly when he realized how hero society truly works?

Because hero society isn’t bigger than themselves. It shouldn’t be idolized so heavily as it is presented in BNHA.

At least, not in its current state. And people who don’t fit in that group or agree with its ideals suffer the consequences. Like Shigaraki. Like Twice and Spinner. Like Gentle.

These are all villains that are products of society that promised to stamp out villains. And when Hawks realizes that it’s just a never ending cycle where the people left in between the cracks are the ones who perpetuate the system itself...

Like you said, Hawks sees the bigger picture. And his goal is to lessen the burden of the workload for heroes. There will never be a shortage of everyday criminals using their quirks for petty crimes but what about the bigger picture organizations? How are they going to be stopped? What about examining the root core of the problem and going from there? No more short-term solutions to problems... What can Hawks, mighty number two hero, do even at the expense of himself? Hmm...

I don’t know, just some food for thought. Something I’ve seen done for villain!hawks is the hero commission throwing Hawks under the bus for some reason and Hawks either a) joins the league to gleam more information but finds himself willing to stay or b) has nowhere else to go and it’s more of a push for Hawks to orbit towards the League.

I am really thankful for your thoughts! Even though we don’t agree on things, I think discussion is still possible (whenever my anxiety stops bashing me in the head) and I’m always willing to accept I may be wrong about something. At this point in time (3/27/2019), we have less than 10 chapters released that centers around Hawks, but he’s certainly intrigued a lot of people considering he’s already #4 in popularity from so little chapters released! I think he and his introduction to BNHA represent the more cynical side of hero society that we haven’t been able to properly see from Deku’s perspective!

And I’m interested in what direction Horikoshi is going to take Hawks’ character in! The one thing I’m truly against is Hawks staying the “good little hero” in the end--whether he dies, becomes a villain, or hell even just stops being a hero is good enough for me. Free the bird or kill him off is what I’d want to see. That’d be enough of a character arc for me. Characters change, and it’d be silly to expect Hawks to stay the same especially since he has a lot of baggage on his shoulders and his current situation as a double agent for the League is precarious--despite him stating that he was willing to sacrifice his own reputation for the good of everyone, there’s no guarantee that he wouldn’t feel at least some degree of hurt over losing the respect of everyone and his colleagues.

My thoughts are pretty clunky but maybe someone was able to gleam something from my stupid 5 am vent...

I love Dabihawks, even though I’m not as invested in it as say Shigahawks or ShigaDabiHawks (which I’m sure you’d definitely have objections to considering your other salt posts... but not something I want to address here), and I still think DabiHawks is a great ship more so because of the dynamic than the aesthetic. But hey, you ship what you ship, you are allowed to express your disdain for the ship--I’ve certainly expressed my own disdain for the your ship in the past--and your salt posts which probably took like 10 minutes to type out provoked me to type out my own thoughts which took like 2 hours to fully process. Like I said earlier: you do you, I do me.

And again-- I’m not trying to “defend” here nor am I trying to “attack”. I just had things I wanted to say and I hope I DON’T have the attitude of someone looking down on you, because I think you have very valid opinions and thoughts and sometimes discourse can just be healthy discussions about how we interpret different characters. We are literally squeezing everything we can out of one character we love and there’s enough room for different interpretations of the same character ^^ If anything, I actually look up to you, which is why I’m too much of a coward to send this to you because oh my god i am so embarrassed about a lot of the shit that comes out of my mouth and i constantly worry about if im saying wrong things even though im open to people telling me why im wrong about said things.

tdlr; villains hawks very good. has nothing to do with dabihawks. villain hawks very good on its own. I agree with tumblr user on a lot of things, yet we see differently on other things. The world keeps spinning--I think it’s more interesting to address differences in opinions rather than ignore them.

for all of you that’ve listened to the penumbra podcast: do you remember the concierge, right before final resting place, saying “you do realize you can just like, leave, and everything will be hunky dory and you won’t have to deal with the emotional consequences this episode will bring you” because i’m seriously considering doing that right now.
