Dude season 5 is so weirdddd. Like don’t get me wrong it’s one of my personal favorite seasons but like it’s weird, y’know?
It sets up all these emotional stakes at the very beginning of the story, but then never actually follows up on them until wayyy later. It introduces morro’s backstory/beef with Wu in the first couple episodes, but I’m pretty sure there’s no meaningful follow up on that until like… the finale?? When they meet each other during the final battle I think?
Same goes for Lloyd and his lingering grief over his father. That gets touched on early on as well, but then all the possession stuff happens and we don’t really get to see much of that play out until later on in the story. We only see it addressed at the last possible moment, when Lloyd goes into the cursed realm in the finale.
And so there’s this long stretch of time in the middle of the season where, sure, we’re bouncing around, we’re following the clues from Wu’s staff, we’re racing against morro, we’re doing things, the plot is moving; however there is minimal emotional weight to any of it. And to an extent I’m okay with that (the stakes are high and the constant moving around keeps things exciting, I’m a sucker for that kind of thing I guess), but it’s still so strange?? Like why are we doing it like this????
And the fix for this is super simple too. Literally just show us a scene of Lloyd and Morro interacting with each other. You could bring up Morro’s beef w Wu and reinforce his motivations for doing any of this in the first place. You could show Morro using Lloyd’s grief as a way to get into his head or something. And, you know. Showing your main antagonist clash with your main protagonist is kinda. Writing 101. That’s generally something you wanna do. In your story.
You could literally include that one scene somewhere in the middle of season 5 and it would make the whole thing that much more cohesive.

TOWL finale spoiler below cut
so i have only seen episodes one and two of towl BUT i saw a spoiler for the ending episode where they reunite with the kids and listen...
i adore judith so much. my favorite kid in the universe besides lydia. i know she's waited so long to see (kind of meet, considering how little she was when the bridge happened) her dad and the reunion is so beautiful and heartwarming.
if we get to see them again, should amc pursue a second season, i need the writers to NOT FUMBLE this. let us see the moments where she acts how she thinks she's supposed to with her dad and rick has to remind her that she can just be herself. when daryl gets back, let us see the vulnerable times when judith goes to daryl instead of rick for something because she isn't quite used to going to rick as her father figure just yet. let us see judith leaning on michonne as the primary parent and rick questioning if he's doing things right after all of those years of being the shell of a man he once was.
the reality is that even though rick is her dad and she's heard all of these stories about him and has this instinctual love for him, for the most part he's... really a stranger to her. there's bound to be a hell of an awkward transitional period where they have to get used to each other as father and daughter and i want to SEE ITTTT.
don't try to sell it like they just fall into this perfect father-daughter relationship as if he never left and they're used to each other.
maybe i'm just speaking for myself here, but i want that uncomfortable realism, i don't want them to just be the perfect little family after everything that's happened because it would just feel weirdddd.

actually i suppose its not that confusing because the truth is that insomniac has a weirdddd tendency for dickriding cops even in the first game. and it didnt affect peter's story that much because his story can be fairly separated from it, but even then all of the worst parts about insomniac's peter have to do with the weird level of cooperation he has with the fucking New York Police Department like he may as well have his own badge with how happy they are to work with him. but it doesnt affect his core character arc all that much because the storylines with otto and norman osborn would be more or less the same even if the cops hated peter (like they do in most iterations?). but then miles comes along and not only is his dad a police officer but well he's black and theyre making a game in 2020 so they have to have a Topical Storyline and what they somehow end up on is another fucking 'activist goes too far and becomes evil because she Cared Too Much About Racism' storyline

i actually quite like that theres a love triangle in the love is war manga bc it’s a shipping war between miko x ishigami vs tsubame x ishigami. this dives more into the “love is war” aspect because before it was just a race for someone to be open with yourself and confess. now it’s about loving someone afar and prioritizing someone’s happiness. inferring that tsubame and ishigami gets into a comfirmed relationship, this aspect goes perfectly with miko’s arc of becoming more mature with her feelings and personality and for tsubame to lose the fear of being forgotten.
personally i believe that ishigami and tsubame’s relationships would be short lived, when tsubame leaves Shuchiin, and so that’s when miko and ishigami’s relationships develope even more as miko is being the student council president. this would be when both miko and ishigami have fully matured. i don’t believe in “i’m better when i’m with you/ you complete me” type love as it implies that it’s your partner’s responsibility to “better you”. it also implies that you’re incomplete and that your identity needs to be tied to a lover. i think love should be when you feel comfortable and safe with someone. the author has said that you must be your authentic self in order to have a “true relationship” and i think miko and ishigami can achieve that.
anyways, my only gripe with this love arc thing is that tsubame is a 3rd year and ishigami is a 1st year. it’s kinda weirdddd

Also, I love how the Sea King keeps having an impact on heroes so long after his defeat. First Prisoner during the alien invasion, then Max and I know in just a bit Snek too. What a villain. Jeez, the mildly ominous music really isn’t subtle about making Suiryu out to be antagonistic, yeah? Also, this is the most we’ve heard him talk so far- Suiryu’s voice is exactly what I imagined I love it. MAX NO ITS OK I LOVE YOU ANYWAY AND SUIRYU IS A DICK ITS FINE YOU DID GREAT

Because the way he acts later on is clearly not evil enough already? I feel like that’s unnecessary but it doesn’t add or detract from anything really so whatever I guess?

So yeah, I had a seriously fucking weird experience with this one. Gonna hang onto the fucked up copy though (as well as sourcing a proper one) because it’s a masterpiece in a fucked up disaster way
