why anapris is one of the most ships ever

I blame @frefallingtea for this post entirely (ily)

So I've vaguely discussed this ship in a few different posts, but never fully elaborated on why exactly this ship holds so much mental real estate in my brain. The fact most of their interactions are relegated to side content (both translated and untranslated) certainly doesn't help, meaning I can count the fans of this ship on one hand.

The primary reason I ship these two comes down to one fundamental factor: they're always seeking to one up each other, and value the challenge the other poses as a rival/enemy.

Priscilla is, as we all know, a very prickly character. She does not mince her words and will only take an interest in things she finds entertaining. It's why she doesn't remember Subaru after arc 3, and why she brings Heinkel to the arc 5 meeting she was never invited to. The world exists in her favour, and that includes entertaining her, be it watching people dance in her palms or struggling against their own fate.

But Anastasia doesn't do either of those. She's in a different league entirely - a candidate for the election, but someone who acts outside of Priscilla's expectations. Anastasia is one of the rare people who Priscilla takes an active interest in, outside of her camp and perhaps Crusch.

To Pris, Ana is her biggest enemy in the Royal election. She says so directly in Lugunican Papers 2:

She's somebody Pris cannot afford to underestimate because she's so capable at turning the tides in her favour. It's a sentiment that goes both ways, as we see later:

Their first meeting really hammers that sentiment home. Going over her Camp Formation Story, we get to see Priscilla's first meeting with Anastasia, told from Schult's POV. After contacting the Hoshin company for some assistance regarding Priscilla's husband (at the time) we get to see them bicker about their true natures.

Schult observes instantly how different Pris acts with Anastasia, down to the "equal footing" and "corresponding value." Neither of them are pretending to be on good terms, but they're clearly enjoying each other's company.

Later, in the same SS, Anastasia rejects taking financial compensation for helping Priscilla out.

Both Pris and Ana are noted, multiple times through canon, to be intelligent women. They're equally capable of getting under somebody's skin, and one-upping most conversational partners. But with each other, there's that sense of unpredictability. Ana does something Pris couldn't have anticipated, and it delights her.

Pris and Ana also have that one commonality - being the two "outsiders" to the election. When Ana's heritage is brought up, Pris even defends her selection to Al, calling her "worthy."

A very common theme in most side content focusing on the pair is the presence of others observing them interact. Usually Al or Julius gets saddled with watching them bicker, largely in parts due to how neither of them necessarily reveal their intentions. Anastasia and Priscilla both speak in ways designed to rile or get at people's weak points, which makes it incredibly funny to observe as an outsider.

Just look at their interactions from Vainglory IF:

They're so fun to read, even if their back and forths seem to exhaust Subaru every time he sees them fight. It's very reminiscent of the bickering between Julius and Subaru, the way they won't admit they respect each other just a little.

Julius even says as much, directly to Subaru:

And he's right, in more ways than one. Sure, they bicker and insult each other while acknowledging their strengths, but there's more to both dynamics. One big example of that: the way both pairings tend to agree with each other the most, even with all the fighting they do.

In arc 5, Julius goes against Ana's proposal for minimal casualties, choosing to side with Subaru. Almost every occasion he disagrees with Ana is due to him actually agreeing with Subaru, something that I don't think either of them are necessarily aware of.

The same happens with Ana and Pris. Even though they're constantly at each other's throats, they're the candidates that agree the most with each other. Lugunican Papers has them share pretty much identical opinions on the other candidates, praising Crusch while dismissing Felt and Emilia:

And in Arc 3, Pris is the one to back up Anastasia's refusal to intervene in the Julius-Subaru duel:

A lot of what Priscilla says is incindiary to the rest of the cast, something that Subaru regularly clashes with. It even happens a few times in Prophecy of the Throne, where Pris will state something heartless (i.e. not caring about helping Melty) and everyone else will react negatively to her.

But Anastasia 9/10 times agrees with her and faces less blowback for it. In that Prophecy of the Throne example, she outright explains Pris' opinion and translates it in a way that's more agreeable - it's not that they want Melty dead, but they need incentive to help her. Pris gets annoyed with her, but doesn't disagree with anything she explained to the rest of the cast.

In my opinion, the reason Anapris works so well as a pairing (platonic or romantic) is due to the strong mutual understanding they have of each other. There's no hiding each other's natures, or playing to a crowd. They only want to get the upper hand on the other, but can only gain small victories moment to moment. They acknowledge and understand each other more than anyone else, and that's why they clash so much.

You know what's a scenario I need? Priscilla introducing Anastasia as her girlfriend to Vincent and Arakiya. The sibling-in-law dynamics would be great.

Hear me out.

I think Vincent would be quick to accept Ana into the family. He can see Ana is a skilled woman, so he'd respect her. Maybe there'd be a bit of wariness from him, because that's how he is, but even so, he knows Priscilla is smart, and if his little sister chose Ana, then surely he can trust her. Ana could take a liking to him as well; she'd definitely have fun teasing him. Plus, Ana calling Vincent "our brother" when talking to Priscilla would be cute.

As for Arakiya, perhaps she'd initially be a bit jealous of Ana. I think Ana would make attempts to approach Arakiya nonetheless, and even though Arakiya isn't very talkative, Ana, thanks to her natural skill with words, could find a way to interact with Arakiya that doesn't make the latter uncomfortable. And, feeling validated by this and also impressed by Ana's finesse overall, Arakiya could warm up to her.

Pris is almost definitely the type to brag about having a partner, if not to goad others and observe their reaction. I can see her using her relationship with Ana to torment an emotionally repressed Vincent whos still trying to beat all the thoughts of Chisha. Like “you couldnt kill me and you couldnt even beat me at getting into a relationship. and youre the emperor? lol. Lmao even.”

And 10000% I think you hit the nail on the head with Vincent in that he’d be wary, probably coming up with a bunch of escape plans for Pris if she somehow gets on the wrong side of the Iron Fang (or if he knew about Ana’s connection to Halibel), but would eventually warm up as she’s got that easygoing, business mentality that he can respect. I think he’d find it just as entertaining as Pris does when Ana backtalks them and slyly insults them.

Ana calling Vincent “our brother”,,,, thats so precious omg. Pris mocking her habits of collecting people and being a conniving fox while Ana’s like “I’m a greedy gal, course I’d monopolise my future wife’s family too. I aint exactly got one of my own.” and one hit KOing Pris.

god speaking of foxes I gotta wonder just how funny it’d be to Ana that Pris’ mother is a fox demihuman. Like theyre both fox women in a certain sense, even if Pris dismisses her whenever its brought up.

Arakiya is a difficult one because (at least current canon anya) shes very, very obsessed with Pris. That whole line of her being willing to dismember Pris just to keep her on the throne haunts me. So I imagine if she found out about Ana, she’d be furious at first. Pris has picked someone weak who cant protect her (abandoned Arakiya when she couldnt do the same, one of her biggest regrets) and Pris has actively picked someone as far removed from Vollachia as they come.

But I do think with time and character development, Arakiya would soften up a lot. Ana can’t protect her directly in the way Arakiya wants, but she has dozens of people capable of doing so for her. She’s good at negotiating, and eventually I imagine Arakiya will have to contend with the fact Pris is strong enough on her own. It’d take a long time for Arakiya to acknowledge Ana as worthy for the Princess, but I like to imagine her and Cecilus going to Kararagi for (his) clothes shopping and Ana tagging along to get to know Anya better.

Oh, oh and I cant forget how juicy the whole “Ana is on borrowed time” thing would be as a reveal to her inlaws. Pre them getting along I can see it be a huge reason for Vincent and Arakiya to oppose the relationship on account of their protectiveness of Pris. But after theyve got positive opinions of Ana? It’d be devastating. Poor Vincent reliving what happened with Chisha, expecting the reveal to crush Pris, while Pris insists on her world working in her favour mindset. Arakiya remembering Prisca’s reaction years back would cause her to really, really panic. She’s just gotten the princess back—would her partners untimely death break her worldview once more, or is there anything Arakiya can do to finally make it up to her?

This'll be a long one I'm so sorry but thank you so much for asking aaaaa

Sexuality Headcanon: Gender isn't an element she thinks about with people in my eyes, so she's happy with anyone if they're high value.

Gender Headcanon: I've considered writing a trans Ana fic a few times, but never actually went through with it. I mainly thought of how when she was younger, she would frequently be called a boy due to her clothing and hairstyle, and even Ricardo had thought that. But once she gets a job and gets pretty clothes and has Ricardo with her, she insists on being called a maiden and being very feminine which Ricardo obliges. Most of my headcanons around gender and sexuality fluctuate a lot, since I tend to treat each of em as their own story/fic idea, so this one varies a lot.

A ship I have with said character: I've gone over AnaJuli and AnaPris (which I need to do a write-up for, sometime...) so to introduce some curveballs... I've got a WIP for Emilia x Anastasia, with them on a double date with Julius x Subaru. I think there's definitely enough you can use in canon for Ana x Crusch, too, since their candidate meeting was really cute.

A crack pair me and a friend came up with was Ana x Capella, based on them joking around in arc 5 and Ana winking at Capella. It'd be a pretty funny pairing, since you have two mothers of triplets with very very different parenting styles. The amount of bickering you could have between two of the smartest characters in the series is incredible.

A BROTP I have with said character: Well, I've covered my thoughts on Ana and Josh, and Ana and Ricardo, and the triplets goes without saying so...

Ana and Otto should have more interactions, in my opinion! Two merchants with weighted interests in the people closest to them. I like that in the LiM branch for Otto IF (where Subaru starts peddling mayo with Otto in the streets) Ana buys the recipe for it off them, but still happily goes out of her way to free Otto from his debt slave status with Russell, and give the pair enough support for them to open their own business together. There's a few diff interactions as well where both characters have stated they admire each other's work, but they barely interact in canon :(

A NOTP I have with said character: Asides from Ana and Ricardo, I suppose it'd be Ana/Otto romantically or Ana/Russell? I just want merchant bros and Russell just...shouldn't be with anyone. He should be 5 miles away from contact with any character at all times.

A random headcanon: As a kid, she's very affectionate, and loves cuddling the triplets and getting headpats from Ricardo. I like to imagine that once she gets to know somebody, she's very open to physical contact--sprawling over Julius' lap, throwing an arm around Joshua's shoulder, hell even giving other candidates hugs. Ricardo comments in canon that Ana doesn't have friends because she's too business focused, so it'd be lovely for her to learn to cut back for once after years of pushing herself.

General Opinion over said character: Best rezero character in my eyes. Probably one of my favourite female characters of all time, too - she's just the perfect balance between somebody who's intelligent but able to still tease others, and not rub it in people's faces. She's caring and fiercely loyal, and even to people she has no inclination to actually help - she'll still do something for them, like giving Subaru the address for a carriage.

Often she'll get mischaracterised as only caring for money, or being cruel. She's the candidate who deliberately goes out of her way to hire demihumans and free slaves in Kararagi, building up the wealth of the city-states, all while knowing this gets people looking at her with negative attention. Her name is explicitly incindiary, somebody super ambitious to aim for King as a foreign merchant, but she never lets go of her origins.

There's so much I can say about how adorable she is in certain side stories - her crying into a glass of milk and asking the barkeep for more when she can't play with Mimi as a kid, her getting mad at Kadomon for having a stern face bad for business when strolling with Julius - yet at the same time she's remarked as a serious threat who nearly figures out parts of RBD in one of the LiM routes. She watches a man get beheaded in front of her as a child and still manages to put up a brave front, never hesitating or backing down from a challenge despite her lack of physical abilities compared to other characters.

Ana's just a really cool character, and I can only wish to be half as courageous as her.
