I bet you won’t see an #AMCGremlin cutaway anywhere else this week (thanks @brownsalvage). This car has donated much of it’s left side to somebody else’s project, but it shows off the compromises made to make the Gremlin happen. - The big news at AMC in 1967 were the Javelin and short-wheelbase AMX, but just a few months earlier #AMC styling VP Dick Teague and designer Bob Nixon had begun working on restoring AMC’s economy car focus. Ford and GM were working on new “subcompacts” and AMC had taken it’s eye off the ball. VW sales were twice what AMC’s overall sales were. A plan was underway to replace the Rambler with what would become the Hornet, but AMC needed an even smaller car to survive. - As a way of conserving cash the AMX treatment was applied to the still-cooking Hornet platform. Teague’s initial sketch for the Gremlin was done on an air sickness bag while flying on a business trip in the fall of 1966. Thus was born the short, Kamm-tailed #AMC Gremlin, previewed as the sleek AMX-GT in 1968. The AMX-GT was sporty, but the production Gremlin’s mission was economy. - It was only 3 inches (8cm) longer than a Beetle, but half a foot wider. Small and light by domestic standards - from the B-pillar forward it was a Hornet, and the Hornet’s componentry made it 700+ lbs. heavier than a Beetle. At first it came only with a pair of straight sixes from the Hornet. - The sawed-off Kamm tail wasn’t a hatch - access to the rear was through the flip-up backlight. At first, this was optional, and the cheapest Grems had no rear access at all (that lasted only 6 months). Offered with only cosmetic changes, other than the addition of the 304 V8 in 1972, for nine years, it earned a mediocre rep for “Economy,” mainly because its heft and configuration. There actually was a good amount of cargo space, but the design made it hard to use. It had lots of space in front, but as a truncated platform indicates, not much in the back. By the time of the VW Rabbit, it was wildly outclassed. - The Grem was better as a miniature muscle car - once the V8 was added, it made for a peppy car that was easy to modify.
