if its possible pls can i see more of the mycologists 👉👈 they r so fine theyre my fav characters
also i like to think at Least one of them cultivates mushroom logs at home for fun :3c just bc i really think mushroom logs are really sick, and they DEFINITELY have favorite mushrooms (source: i have a friend whos into mycology and she has one particular fav which is Amanita Virosa/Ocreata/Verna/Bisporogera (all regional variants) which is the fungus more commonly known as the Destroying Angel. She calls them her favorite pretty ladies :) )
as an apology to u and all the myco fans on my blog for once again falling behind on my Myco Content(tm), you get some rendered retyrement mycos finally!
Tumblr media
they definitely both cultivate mushroom logs, to the point that their apartment's air quality is like 75% spores by volume lmao
i think they try to be on the down-low about it (because like, it isn't super relevant to their job all things considered) but by this point everyone at the home is at least kind of aware of their weird shared mycology hobby, it doesn't take much prompting to get them talking about it

*deep breath* This, folks, is EXACTLY why I am writing The Everyday Naturalist. Because it's not enough to have an app. You HAVE to know how to use multiple identification tools and have keen observational skills if you are going to safely forage or otherwise identify things in nature.
Here's the deal. Apps are a tool. They are not infallible, and they should never, ever, EVER be your only tool for identifying mushrooms and other organisms. This goes even moreso for when you're trying to determine whether something is edible or not. I go into more detail about why apps should never be used by themselves in this article that I wrote a few months back, but let's explore a bit more about how an app works.
Any identification app has access to a particular database of pictures and other information for various species. In the case of my favorite app, iNaturalist, it draws from the over 156 million (and growing) observations of animals, plants, fungi, and other living beings that have been uploaded to it over the years.
When you upload a photo to an app, your phone usually inputs the date, time, and GPS location automatically, though these can be updated manually if need be. Then the app's algorithms sift through the database looking for species that are found in the same location at the same time of year, and which have similar photos.
Notice that I said SIMILAR, not identical. Many organisms, to include many fungi, have varying appearances based on subspecies, life stage, and other factors. And there are a lot of species that have close lookalikes, whether we're talking birds, wildflowers, mushrooms, etc.
So the algorithms then use their search results to give you their suggestion(s) of what most closely resembles the organism you are trying to identify. Some give you one answer; others, like iNaturalist, offer you a list to choose from, and may also qualify their response with "We're not sure, but these were found nearby" or something similar. The first one on the list is NOT always going to be the correct answer. However, the app doesn't have reasoning skills, and all it can do is play match-up and then produce suggestions based on that. (Yes, other iNaturalist users can come along and comment on your observations once you've uploaded and saved them, but you always want to carefully assess their claims, too.)
There are several toxic mushrooms that are implicated in poisonings on a regular basis; among them are what I call the "deadly Amanitas": the death cap (Amanita phalloides) and the destroying angels (A. bisporigera, A. ocreata, and A. verna.) In addition to these species' respective native ranges in Europe and North America, some have managed to make their way to other parts of the world. This includes in Australia, where there is a current investigation underway over a woman who fed several family members deadly Amanitas, three of whom have died.
These poisonous mushrooms have several edible lookalikes. As one example, while matsutakes (Tricholoma matsutake) are often brown, they may sometimes appear white, especially if the brown layer has peeled off. And field mushrooms (Agaricus spp, especially A. bisporus and A. campestris) are also large white mushrooms, though their gills and spores tend to be brown rather than the white of Amanita species.
Still, someone taking a picture of a large white mushroom--especially if they neglect to take another picture of the gills (the more pictures you take, the better)--could easily end up with an app telling them an Amanita is an Agaricus. Or they might read that some people think it's safe to eat Amanita muscaria if you parboil it long enough, and assume that other Amanita species are the same way (one of MANY reasons I do not advocate for treating A. muscaria as an edible.)
So--again--DO NOT USE APPS AS YOUR ONLY ID TOOL. Use them in conjunction with multiple field guides, websites, other foragers, etc. Practice using these tools and developing a critical eye before you go out foraging. Be super cautious, and when in doubt, throw it out.
And my inbox is ALWAYS open, as is my email (rebeccathenaturalist(at)gmail(dot)com.) You can ALWAYS email me with questions about field guides, apps, and other resources, and I am also happy to look at pictures of mushrooms (and other living beings) you're trying to identify, whether edible or not. You might need to give me a few days to reply, but I will get back to you. Don't use ME as your only source, either; I'm just one person. But I can point you to online groups that are also good resources.

Eastern NA Destroying angel 》 Amanita bisporigera
Famous as some of the most toxic mushrooms currently described, the Destroying Angel name is shared by four species of white amanita mushrooms, the most popularly known being A. virosa, a species common in Europe.
A. verna also occurs in Europe but in the springtime, rather than the autumn as A. virosa does. A. ocreata is also known as the Western North American destroying angel. A. bisporigera (pictured here) occurs in eastern North America and south into Mexico.
While no harm can come from simply handling these deadly mushrooms, consuming a piece about the size of your thumbnail would likely be enough to kill you.
I've always been intrigued by these species and was very happy to find these specimens!! The name alone, I mean come on. Metal af! 🤍

Death. Art by Joseph Buckley, from The Mushroom Hunter's Tarot.
Here we have the Destroying Angel mushroom. Though the specific species pictured here is Amanita bisporigera, three similar species of deadly white mushrooms fall under the name Destroying Angel as well: Amanita ocreata, Amanita verna, and Amanita virosa. These mushrooms account for the overwhelming majority of mushroom poisoning deaths. Because of their resemblance to several other white mushrooms, it’s essential to be able to identify the Destroying Angel in all of its forms before foraging for any edible white mushroom. When coming across this mushroom in the wild it’s a sign that, for the love of all that is good, do not consume this mushroom! As a card however, it’s merely a representation of a spiritual death and radical transformation. With endings come new beginnings. It’s time to let go, to say goodbye to the person we were, and embrace the new possibilities manifesting before you.
Keywords: Change, cycles, release, radical transformation, rebirth, endings, letting go

Here is my entry for @slocotion ‘s last contest of the year! Forgive me for posting this close to the deadline; I have spent weeks perfecting her design and story. While I may not be the best at art, I hope my entry is at least considered! Dr. Belladonna Marmalade is the local doctor in her small, Russian village! She has a unique way of going about things; get on her good side, and her bitter-tasting medicine will cure all of your ailments and send you on your merry way! Get on her bad side...and her treatment might make you feel worse than you've ever felt.
Her hat is embellished with her home-grown mushrooms, and she'll often offer these to small children to eat! Apparently, they taste quite good both by themselves and in soup. If you steal them from her without her permission, they require an antidote in the next 30 minutes to prevent paralysis, shock, and death. Her clothes and face are adorned with gorgeous shades of white, pink and gold to appeal to those she wants to trust her; kids love playing with the bits and baubles on her clothing, and the village woman are always complimenting her on her adorned frills and jewels! Those who get to know her anger, however, only see her bulging red eyes, always-gloved hands and never revealed face. Dr. Marmalade uses what she calls her 'spores' in the air to cure disease wherever she may walk! She keeps these spores in the oversized Birds' Nest Fungi that grow on her belt. If she is especially concerned for a family, she will remove one of these mushrooms and leave it behind for them as she continues her travels. Design Notes under the Read More! Warning for photos of mushrooms/fungi if that kind of stuff grosses anyone out.
I wanted to keep Belladonna more in the realm of 'plague doctor based on mushrooms' rather than 'mushroom person based on plague doctors', which was difficult to achieve without completely removing the classic plague doctor hat and shawl, but I managed to incorporate the patterns of many inedible/poisonous fungi into her design. Her bulging red eyes are based on the 'blood' of the Bleeding Tooth mushroom, and I believe they can be made out of the same clay as her body. If that does not work, filling the eyeholes with red resin may also work (again, I am no dollmaker so I have no clue what you'd actually do in a doll like Belladonna.)
Tumblr media
Her shawl that lays on her shoulders puffs out and has multiple layers of lace underneath to add volume. This is a subtle nod to the deadly frills of the Amanita Verna mushroom, which is poisonous enough to kill a man.
Tumblr media
The gold cover that goes over her petticoat and the gold web-like pattern on her sleeves, hat, belt and anklets are nods to the Bamboo Pith, a stinkhorn that has very intricate web-like gills. This mushroom is specifically known for its ability to attract insects and animals to spread its spores, which I subtly acknowledged in her short backstory. (Note: While the Pith itself is edible, there are many poisonous mushrooms with this same web pattern, like the Clathrus Ruber. The Pith is just the best reference for said pattern. I am not going to torture any poor fabric makers/cutters by giving you a reference photo of a tightly-packed mushroom gill lol.)
Tumblr media
The spore-carriers on her hip are based off of the common, yet inedible Birds' Nest fungi, which are known for bursting and launching their spores out everywhere to spread their growth. I am not sure what these could be made of. Possibly clay, resin, thick felt or anything strong enough to hold up on fabric.
Tumblr media
There are plenty of other little mushroom-inspired things in her design, but I also kept in mind the multicolored patterns and intricate clothing of the classic Slocotion plague doctor doll. That being said, I am absolutely okay with any fabric of this doll being replaced with a different pattern/texture. This design is absolutely open to editing in any way imaginable. If I get considered, but an element needs to be reworked, edited or removed for it to be passable, I am absolutely okay with that. I am just really excited for the opportunity to be included in such a wonderful artist’s contest in the first place. Happy New Year’s Eve to anyone who read this far! (P.S. I can't draw lace very well, but the frilly stuff on the sides of her pants and under the main pink fabric of her shawl are meant to be frilly lace. I wanted these to subtly reference the 'fluffiness' of the gills of many mushrooms.)

I wonder about one thing,, (tbh a few)
If witches love is that strong, and they can't fall out of it, NEVER, then why Mochi's aunt, Amantha Verna, tries to hunt Mochi and her mum?? I can't believe Amantha n Ellena(?)(Mochi's mom) never loved each other like sisters,, or cousin (i dun rlly know which one is it)
Or it is the reason why auntie sent Taffy on a 'killer rampage :3'~??
Another topic i want to talk about: what if magical creature fell for someone, but then got amnesia? (like-- amnesia amnesia, no memories, no feelings, etc.) Will they be able to fall for someone other than their 1st crush, or still be in love w/ them? (I know it also depends on how the 1st crush will act,[ like- stay away or b close] but lets forgot that for now..)
I wonder what would happen if magical creature will fall in love with someone, but hate their alter ego, not knowing who they are? Will hate just dissapear if they knew, or there will love n hate at the same time?? Or it depends on the person?
Sorry for so many long questions. Also sorry if i mistaken smth or misinterpreted, or wrote some things wrong english isn't my first language ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ(• ▽ •;) and haha, i'm proffesional (ships n OTP's) cospiracy theoritist, i got x2, maybe x3 more questions and theories, but i didn't wrote them cause they are already overthrown :')
Also,, me and my younger sister rlly love your style n drawings♡♡, how you color things, characters fasion,, and especially we are in love with how u draw heads profile💓ヾ(˙❥˙)ノ we were seriously squeaking seeing Lime or/and Mochi's ♡♡♡ xD
aaaa yes yes all good questions!!!
so first on the topic of mochis aunt: a little backstory first!! amanita (mochis aunt) and tiramisu (mochis mama) are not blood sisters!! tiramisu was adopted by grandma mocha (mochis grandma) at a young age, and was raised as her daughter!!! so while grandma mocha and tiramisu loved each other and loved amanita, amanita never loved her adopted sister (and as a result never loved or knew mochi), so thats why she has no problem killing them!! amanita is the older of the two, so as the oldest daughter, shes supposed to inherit the cat witchs power, but since shes been evil since she was a kid (or had evil tendencies), grandma mocha passed her power onto tiramisu instead. and ofc amanita was enraged and left her family and has spent the rest of her life growing stronger in other magic so she can take back the power that was rightfully hers!!
so tiramisu loves amanita (still) as a sister, but amanita HATES tiramisu, which is a good example of what kind of issues arise, because now tiramisu has a very hard time harming or killing her sister, but amanita has no issues sending her straight to the grave!! the plot with taffy began because amanita KNOWS that the cat witchs weakness is water, so who better to pit against her than the only child of the sea? ;3c
second, on the question of amnesia, the love doesnt go away!!! the mind forgets but the heart remembers, is how the witchs put it!! you have no idea who this person is or what they mean to you, but your heart races and your face flushes and for some reason you just trust them entirely, and you can FEEL that you love them despite not knowing a damn thing about them!! one of the laws of magic is that emotion cant be changed, by magic or otherwise. its one of the few things that are left untouched by the influence of magic!! they wont fall in (romantic) love with anyone else because their feelings are still geared toward whoever they loved before they lost their memories!!
last on that topic of alter egos: its like the situation with mochi and cat-ears!! another case of the mind saying one thing and the heart saying another - the witch KNOWS they love someone else, but cant help be drawn to this other person (said loved ones alter ego). its a lil funky how it works but they cant help it, somehow the heart just knows even though the mind doesnt. which is why mochi is capable of getting flustered around cat-ears because. its lime. she doesnt KNOW its lime, but i guess the love in her heart does?? for some reason none of the witches spellbooks point this out as a clue that the person behind the mask is someone you know (we leave it out for convince and plots sake - i cant imagine it happens very often enough to write about it in a spellbook. how many times is you significant other going to make an alter ego without you knowing and try to lie to you about it??)
ANYWAY THANKS FOR ASKING I HOPE THAT CLARIFIES A BIT!!!!!! IM GLAD YOU LIKE MY OCS AND FEEL FREE TO ASK ANY MORE QUESTIONS ABOUT THEM!!!!! 💕😭

snake in the clovers
Tumblr media
all of the snake facts in this one are brought to you by my younger brother, all of the moss facts are brought to you, by me.
Naga! Aizawa x Fox! Reader
warnings: none
word count: 1,300 (about)
summary: a work-study in Mexico leads you to discover not only some fascinating bio diversity, but fascinating creatures as well.
Lots of your friends went to Mexico for spring break, I mean you were college students after all, but instead of spending a week getting trashed in Cancun or even on a beach somewhere in Cabo you were on a work-study with your botany class spending your time swatting mosquitoes away on the peeks of Sierra Mader Occidental, the mountains of Sinaloa.
And you wouldn’t have it any other way, where else would you be able to see this beautiful greenery surrounding you, and you should feel lucky to see Amoreuxia Gonzalezii bloom in person, The only real draw back wasn’t even where you were, but who you were with.
“Does this mushroom look poisonous to you?” Nate, a boy from your class who was also on the work-study.  You glanced at the spore he was holding
“Its Amanita Verna,” you identified than when you saw the blank look on his eyes you added “Fools Mushrooms”
“So is it edible or not?” Nate asked. You huffed and swallowed a bitter responce.
“It’ll kill you in five to twenty-four hours and your death will be excruciating,”  you said and Nate dropped the mushroom.
Maybe it was because of your fox-like quirk that you felt so close to nature, and why this field of study came so easy to you. Never the less you slightly resented your classmates for not taking the class as seriously as you did.
Just as you were thinking that you heard a loud shriek. You whirled and saw Amanda cowering from a patch of clover.
“S-Snake!” She whaled. You stepped closer and saw the snake in question. He was a medium length and striped with black and gray scales. Phyllorhynchus browni. his pink forked tongue poked out and he stalked slithering towards Amanda. You quickly grabbed him holding him aloft so she didn’t stomp him out of reflex.
“Jesus Christ! Drop that thing before it kills you!” She yelled.
“It’s not Venoumus,” you said flatly dropping the snake to the side and watching it slither away into a nearby bush.
“Of course you’d be able to tell,” Amanda scoffed, embarrassed now that the apparent danger was gone. “I bet you were planning on eating that thing if we weren’t here to judge you,” She sneered.  The others laughed before your professor quieted them. You could feel your cheeks go pink.
“Just because I’m a fox doesn’t mean I eat snakes,” you murmured, but no one was listening. The hike continued, deeper into the woods. Taking notes, pictures, and samples of the local flora as you went.
“We should start heading back down the mountain,” your professor said you looked up at the sky and saw the sun hanging surprisingly low in the sky. How time flys when studying fungi and soil you guessed.
“Hey (y/n),” Nate snickered falling in step beside you as the class made its way back down the trail.
You weren’t supper in the mood to be teased but you answered him anyway.  “What is it?”
“Well I was looking at this moss-” he unclenched his hand and showed you a patch off moss in his palm “-and I wondered if you could use your fox senses or whatever to tell me what it is,”
You could hear other people laughing behind you but you ignored it.
“It’s sphagnales,” you said simply.
“Okay, but what’s the lamen term- you know what would the rest of us normal people call it?”
“Sphagnales,” you frowned. Not understanding what he was saying, sphagnales didn’t have a common name.
You were looking at him confused when you stepped down on a vine and your ankle rolled. You yelped and fell staggering back. You had been distracted by the moss and you hadn’t been paying attention to what part of the trail right next to a sharp drop into a ravine. You felt your stomach drop as you fell. You clawed wildly for something to grab. Nate’s eyes went wide and he reached for you. He missed.
You wailed as you fell through the trees, crashing against the solid ground before rolling down again.  You landed against the thick trunk of a tree and finally, the world stopped spinning.  You couldn’t breathe there was a seaering pain in your left leg, your vision was swimming. There were scratches along your face and arms some of them were bleeding. You needed to call out, yell so your class could find you. But you couldn’t muster it. Your vision went blurry, then completely black.
Dimly you heard the sound of dripping water. Your body ached and slowly, you forced your eyes open. The first thing you saw, once your eyes adjusted to the darkness, were dozens of tiny purple flowers on the ceiling of the cave you were in. Barkeria Dorotheae. A type of orchid local only to these mountains.
Where were you? You remembered falling down the mountain-side but not how you had come here.  You shifted and realized you were on something soft and downy, that’s when you heard the voice.
“Don’t try to move, you’re hurt badly,” you looked and saw a man with long black hair and stubble looking at you from the mouth of the cave, at least the top half of him was a man,  the bottom half of him was a coiled scaley tail. He unfurled himself and slithered towards you. It was hard to see color in the dim light but you made out the color of his scales, black, and grey stripes.
You’d read stories of Naga, creatures that were half snake half man. You remembered reading in at least some myths that these snake-men were helpful. And since you really had no other choice, you decided to trust this man and stay still like he asked.
“Where m I?” you croaked, your voice raspy from lack of use.
“Still on Sierra Mader Occidental, just in a cave on the mountain,” he explained, curling up next to you in the nest.
“What- why-?”
“When I found you, you were unconscious and badly hurt and unconscious, so I took you here to dress your wounds but you still need rest, your party continued down the mountain, planning to come back for you tomorrow when it’s light out and with help,” He explained and you saw that he had in fact bandaged you up.
“Oh, I don’t know how to thank you,” you breathed.
“It’s fine, I couldn’t just let you die there,” he grunted. As you looked at him you realized how handsome he was.
“What is your name?” you asked.
“You can call me Shota,”
“Well, I’d still like to thank you Shota, for all you’ve done for me,”
“Like I said think nothing of it,” he repeated.
“Do you think they, er my classmates that is, do you think they will find me here?” you asked and silently you wondered if half of your class would even bother looking for you, it wasn’t like any of them liked you.
“I’ll do my best to lead them here,” he said, then added “most people aren’t as calm when they see me as you were,”
“And what if they don’t find me?” you croaked.
“I am more than prepared to provide for you until you are well again, or until you are found, whichever comes first, and if you don’t mind me saying, I saw the way those humans interacted with you I almost think you would do better in the forest here then where ever you are from,” he said. You thought about it. You had always liked camping, spend days alone out in the forest alone. And it wouldn’t be bad to live in these beautiful woods with an equally beautiful creature.
