Here's a little look at some of the bird-type creatures I got back from the kiln yesterday. I'm super happy with some of these glaze combos / generally into how most of these fired up! That top one is a particular triumph - it looks like it belongs in a magical swamp <3

Slightly unhinged otter ceramic tumbler 🦦
I didn’t mean for him to look so unhinged, a friend commented that he looked desperate for a drink! I have been exploring different positions for my animals on ceramic vessels, and this one has the cute little otter hanging on the rim by its paws. The tumbler was thrown on the wheel and the otter was sculpted later, biscuit-fired separately and attached by glazing. I have found that this is the best way to avoid nasty cracks, one of the problems I struggled with most during my early days of creating my animal mugs. As with many other struggles I have had with ceramics, this took many trials and surfaced many errors until I arrived at this conclusion. 🥲
I used some new Amaco glazes here, 2x Blue Rutile on the tumbler body, 2x Iron Luster only at the rim on grey speckled stoneware, fired to cone 5, no hold. Honestly I’m not too keen on the colours of the tumbler, a bit too rustic for the vibe I had in mind, but I’d love to read your opinions! What do you think?

Love how the glaze filled the cracks, it looks so elegantly archaic tbh. Also it's subtle?? And the amaco saturated gold looks SO good with the raw porcelain colors

First official glaze firing of mine and student work. We are working with older glazes that we aren’t even quite sure where they came from. This studio is set up to mix glaze from scratch, which is something I’ve never done. While I see lots of room for improvement, considering I came into this with almost zero ceramic experience, I’m not too disappointed!

I did say I'd post my ceramics didn't I. I really ought to, seeing as it's all the work I've been making for the past.... Year and a half. Here's a couple of cups I thought tumblr would like and two bits that came out of the firing today that I really like!! If you want to see more consistent posts of these, I post everything on my ceramics Instagram @muddyfrankie
[ID: four photos of ceramic vessels photographed in strong sunlight. The first is a smooth white cup with a tiny black beetle painted on it. The second has two short matching white cups, with stars and swirls drawn on in blue on one cup and red on the other. The third image is of a rich midnight blue-black teacup. The fourth is of a speckled bowl in tones of dark grey, brown, and black. End ID]

Sorry if you've answered this already, but what glazes do you use?
Oh my god, what glazes DON'T I use?!
Tumblr media
But seriously, I maybe have a glaze-buying problem (which isn't a surprise because I do this with every type of art I pick up...there are just Too Many Colours in the world, y'know?!).
If you can believe it, I've gotten way more sensible about my glaze purchasing - in my first few rounds of glaze-buying, I just went 'OOH pretty colour gotta get it!!!!' & now I take a moment to consider where the new glaze fits amongst my other colours & whether it provides me with exciting layering opportunities (also, stay tuned for my next answered ask, which is about glaze layering!!).
Here's an annotated photo of my glaze shelf - the main brands I use are Amaco, Mayco, and Coyote, & I just got two Spectrum sample sets for Xmas & am REALLY impressed with a lot of those glazes, especially the floating glazes (so there are indeed more pints in my future, o no):

Only sort of related -- this is what my pottery desk looks like right now after my whirlwind glazing session on the wee test owls/bowls (a damn mess that I'm not bothering to clean up b/c I've got a bisque load firing as I type & might get into glazing that tomorrow/Friday!!!):

AN IMPORTANT PSA TO END WITH: You do NOT need one million glazes to be a good & cool potter!!! I just have A Problem and Need To Be Stopped!

Tumblers ❤️
I’ve been experimenting with textures and angled cuts, and tumblers are relatively simple forms to experiment with. I used a loop tool for the fluting and titanium-fused trimming Xiem tools for the angled cuts. So far the titanium-fused tools are holding up extremely well, especially as I like to throw with grogged clay, no matter how fine. My pitiful throwing sponge died a long time ago… 🪦
Testing glaze combinations has been both extremely frustrating and rewarding, sometimes with multiple refires or reglazing. These three tumblers came out lovely on the first try, and I thought the colours looked so cute together I had to take them stacked. My time at the Leach Pottery has instilled in me a love for iron breaking over texture that I can’t give up now.
Tumbler 1: Amaco Arctic Blue 2x over Iron Lustre 2x
Tumbler 2: Botz Beige Granite 2x body, Sand Granite 2x triangles, tape-resist method
Tumbler 3: Amaco Seaweed 2x over Honey Flux 2x
Fired to 1200C, no hold.

Other third of the glaze test bowl! Please remember that glazes vary a lot depending on clay body and temperature!
So the sky blue has already been introduced in a previous post, that is the lovely SW-116 Mayco Norse Blue.
Below it! (They had a slight overlap that resulted in that very runny and lovely blue) in a matte/shimmery gold and flowing blue is SW-186 Mayco's Azurite! I am shocked at the slight shimmer on this glaze (and that it's matte!) but it has a very lovely velvet feeling to the touch, and as you an see it flows beautifully. It's not very saturated colors but it's nice! *I imagine fired at Cone 5 it might be prettier but still nice!* the glaze seems fairly stable but I'd be wary of running.
Below that in orange with honey sparks is SW-117, Mayco's Honeycomb! I have to say I really enjoy this glaze. It's a nice warm coffee stain orangey color but with these small yellow crystal bursts. They flow nicely and it almost looks like the surface of a planet! Seems very stable, too. I tried it on some small pieces, no misbehaving at all!
And next, Western's 4538, Bkue Jasper Art. This is a glaze I really feel could be lovely at a lower temperature. It has a lovely glass to it, no pinholes or bubbling, but yeah it is very murky colored. Clearly lovely flow though so I would LOVE to see it fired Cone 5! Unfortunately this is kinda close to other glazes I have so not certain I'll use it much.
Lastly is Mayco's SW-140 black matte! And it lives up to it's name... almost. It certainly is matte, and black, and velvety to the touch (like, really lovely texture wise, would be GREAT for mug handles) but I would advise to apply liberally! It's oddly transparent somehow.
