OTHER MUSIC THOUGHTS FROM THE ZIBLIOTHEK

In 2020, I started an alphabetical exploration of the Zibliothek’s vinyl collection. I’ve also been documenting the LP library and other aspects of the collection on Instagram. At my current rate, it will take me 13-15 years to listen to the full LP library. I made less progress in 2022 than in previous years, but I have picked up the pace significantly since November. Here’s some of what I listened to this year:

Johnny Burnette: Gone too soon. Lots of good stuff.

Rocky Burnette: His look was all wrong, but his sound is killer.

Kate Bush: Terrific.

Can: Perfect for a very particular mood. Some of their singles are ridiculous. Wonderful.

Captain Beyond: Curious band featuring Deep Purple’s original lead vocalist. Not bad.

Eddie Cantor: A mysterious giant. I can’t hear him without thinking 40 Little Mothers.

George Carlin: The greatest. Genius.

The Carpenters: Very talented, but their catalogue has way too much sedated filler.

Kim Carnes: Solid, and more eclectic than I expected.

The Cars: Terrific pop group.

Johnny Cash: When he was good, he was great. Lots of misfires, though.

Gene Chandler: Much more to him than just “The Duke of Earl”.

Ray Charles: Genius.

Cheap Trick: A handful of great tracks, and a solid debut album. Still never really clicked for me.

Chicago: I have never liked this band. Who was their target audience? I’m mystified. Absolutely not for me.

FOOD IN 2022

Unlike much of society, I am still behaving as though there is an airborne plague in progress. I continue to wear quality masks everywhere outside of home, and I avoid crowds and gatherings. I have not resumed traveling, nor eating in restaurants, so it’s all home cooking and the occasional takeaway. My restaurant-support evangelism of the last few years is wearing thin. I still have my favourites, but I feel less obligated to repeatedly limit my orders to the same handful of businesses in order to keep them solvent - especially given that the general public has largely resumed in-person dining in most of those eateries. I hope all my service-industry pals are doing ok. The best meal I had this year was very likely a takeaway from Indian Fusion. They make astonishing food. Cooking at home, I improvised many tasty soups and pizzas in 2022. I also invented a great new springtime sandwich called the Grilled Luigi.

CONCERTS IN 2022

Likewise, I haven’t resumed attending or performing concerts yet, and this year marks the first time since 2003 that I missed an Edmonton show by Henry Rollins. That being said, there is at least one outdoor private event which Pepperland will be playing next summer, and we’re going to try to line up a few other outdoor summer shows which will be open to the public. News to follow.

FILMS IN 2022

The cinema remains off limits. This is barely an issue, as so few new releases interest me anymore, but I do miss going to Metro Cinema. I bought a couple DVDs last year, and as a result was finally able to rewatch the Gary Oldman remake of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. I last saw it years ago on a tiny airplane screen. It’s visually beautiful, but with a different intensity and a different mood to that of the 1970s BBC miniseries with Alec Guinness. The missus and I also watched several of Kurosawa’s samurai films together in the springtime, which we both enjoyed. Still haven’t seen No Time To Die, but, speaking of James Bond-related viewing, by coincidence the family sat down and for the first time I watched Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. It was not a good movie, I’m sad to say, and its best moment was obviously indebted heavily to Mary Poppins and the “Step In Time” routine.

BOOKS IN 2022

My reading funk continues. I just haven’t been in the mood to read a book for a long time. I started John Steinbeck’s A Cup of Gold and John Le Carre’s A Small Town in Germany. The former didn’t hold my attention. The latter... I just haven’t yet gotten around to picking up again. Someday I will do so. Both Jarvis Cocker’s Good Pop Bad Pop and Miki Berenyi’s memoir Fingers Crossed are on my list of newer releases that I’m looking forward to reading - or possibly enjoying in audiobook form.

RANDOM OTHER CLOSING THOUGHTS ON 2022

After several years of slow progress, interrupted repeatedly by the pandemic, the album Radio Silent by The Bolt Actions was finally released. I produced and engineered the album, and performed supplemental instruments on most of the newer recordings. It was released digitally by Deco Kino, and can be streamed/purchased via Bandcamp.

My collaboration with NME on The No Normal podcast series continues. Launched in 2020, the next season debuts in the coming days. You can stream the podcasts on Soundcloud.

Professionally speaking, this has been a disappointing and dispiriting year for a variety of reasons.

By the end of the year, I will have hosted approximately 140 shows for CKUA in 2022 - roughly half of which were fill-in shows for absent colleagues. Given my experiences this year, I am scaling back drastically on my fill-in hosting. Going forward, I will only occasionally act as a guest-host for CKUA, with apologies and regrets to those who enjoy this aspect of my work.

My CKUA program Saturday Night Surprise was cancelled when the broadcast schedule changed in September, The series ran for about 18 months.

My CKUA program In Our Neighbourhood, focusing on Albertan artists, survived the broadcast schedule changes. The series expanded to a two-hour length, moved to Friday nights, and should continue into the new year.

My longtime CKUA mentor, supervisor, and comrade David Ward died in the summer. His loss continues to be a deep sorrow, and we are all worse off without him.

Ukraine, my cultural and psychological homeland, was invaded - again - and remains at war.

These aren’t hopeful times. Society feels like it’s collapsing. Decency and consideration are on the wane. There is little cause for optimism. But we keep showing up and trying again. Let’s see what next year brings....
