Daniel Watches She-Ra & The Princesses Of Power
-S1E1- 'The Sword Part 1'
Today's She-Ra Watch Art: This shitty Glimmer doodle.
Tumblr media
Look I promise they won't all be garbage ;-; I promise
Okay I wanna preface: Not every post is gonna be this detailed, I didn't even intend to go on this long with just one episode but I lost track of time. Some posts I'll be short & sweet. Some I'll be long winded to a comical degree. Depends on my feeling.
I think I'll just keep it to one paragraph per episode, & only pull out the long rambles when I finish a season. I think that'll work. Yeah.
Okay so I have no idea who any of these people are because I literally just started but one of these guys is a lizard. I'm a huge sucker for lizard people in anything ever so I immediately like this fucker. He's a lizard, that is all I need. He's just instantly cool because lizards are fucking rad as hell dude.
Tumblr media
So Cat-Ra speaks, that first fucking line of hers.
The fucking "Hey Adora"
Tumblr media
The first fucking thing I said to myself, out loud, was the immediate reaction I had to that line: "Oh so they're gay."
I don't know if it's like canon or not but one of the things I know about this show is people ship them a lot. I have no idea if that's actually like a canon thing in the show or not but I've seen a lot of fanart of them so I know people at the very least WANT them to kiss or hold hands or get married & buy a house in the suburbs & raise like 5 kids & watch Shrek on VHS & talk about doing their taxes or whatever idk.
That being an actual thing in the show itself? Uh I guess I'll see what happens so who the fuck knows man. Maybe they just explode idk.
But like....dude. DUDE. The fucking way Cat-Ra said it was just....
SO fucking extra like that immediately felt fruity to me. I'm already getting that vibe from her. On top of that, the way her & Adora continue to interact in the episode also give off a very distinct vibe, a rather, ahem, 'fruity' vibe. I think I'm already getting the idea of why this ship is popular. I do believe I see the vision.
Also, quick tangent, I LOVE the way the animators animated Cat-Ra like an actual cat. Her hair getting puffed up when she's agitated, her ears moving to reflect her mood. Her eyes dilating like how cat eyes actually do. THEY EVEN ALSO MADE HER PURR LIKE AN ACTUAL CAT, LIKE SHE AUDIBLY CAN BE HEARD PURRING. THAT'S SUCH AN ADORABLE DETAIL & IT MAKES HER IMMEDIATLEY ENDEARING AS FUCK.
Tumblr media
Also I guess it makes sense Cat-Ra would be into women, yeah?
Because it makes sense that CAT-Ra would be interested in PUSSY.
Tumblr media
(Please Laugh) (I'm desperate please think I'm funny I need this)
Now moving on, let me talk about this BITCH.
Tumblr media
One. Compared to the original Shadow Weaver, they sure did make her a way more intimidating villain.
Two. FUCK THIS BITCH??????
THE FUCK IS YOUR PROBLEM YOU FUCKING BITCHY, INKBLOT LOOKING, WACKY WAVING TUBE MAN HAIR HAVING, WIZARD-WANNABE MOTHERFUCKER? LITERALLY SHUT UP
+ NO ONE CARES & ALSO YOU SMELL BAD
+ YOU LOOK LIKE A BOOTLEG ERMAC
+ YOU'RE MEAN TO CAT-RA, I MEAN HONESTLY, WHO THE FUCK JUST BULLIES A CAT?
IMAGINE BULLYING A FUCKING CAT. FUCK THIS BITCH.
I DO NOT CARE FOR THIS WOMAN.
HER SMUG AURA MOCKS ME.
Hi so I immediately love you?? Like instantly my favorite character just from the design alone. Glimmer is so real honestly.
Tumblr media
I also like Bow, like, Bow is just so fucking cool & nice? He's such a real one, I wanna be best friends with him & hang out he's just so lovable like he's just awesome. I love this man immediately. He deserves all the good in the world actually.
Also holy shit the contrast between Bow in the original show vs this reboot design.
It's funny, the original design WAY more gay than the new one.
The new one that a lot of people (and by people I mean homophobic douchenozzles.) complained about, the design for Bow in this supposedly 'woke tumblr sjw cartoon' has a design that is far less homoerotic in it's design & feel.
The original Bow just outright looks like a fucking gay pornstar.
He's got the trademark 'Gay Porno Mustache™' & everything.
Tumblr media
Okay so there's a magic sword or something, etc.
They mentioned Eternia.
Okay so, one of the reasons the original she-ra was lame as fuck compared to He-Man? No Skeletor.
Hordak & literally all the villains in the original show suck ass.
They fucking suck. Hordak is just Skeletor but boring & shitty.
Why the FUCK did they not take the oppurtunity to replace Hordak with Skeletor? You don't even need to add He-Man, I'm fine with that.
But You could have just taken She-Ra & added a better villain because Skeletor fucking rules. He calls people boobs. That's fucking awesome & cool. WHERE IS HE? WHERE THE FUCK IS SKELETOR? LOOK SHOW. HORDAK WAS FUCKING LAME AS FUCK.
SO IF THIS REBOOT IS GOING TO CONVINCE ME THAT HORDAK IS IN ANY WAY A LEGITIMATELY COOL VILLAIN, THEN THEY BETTER FUCKING PULL OUT ALL THE STOPS BECAUSE IT'S GONNA TAKE A LOT TO CONVINCE ME THAT THEY WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN BETTER OFF JUST USING SKELETOR INSTEAD. LIKE, YOU BETTER FUCKING IMPRESS ME BECAUSE OTHERWISE, THE LACK OF SKELETOR IS GONNA BE A HUGE FLAW THAT YOU CANNOT OVERLOOK.
I mean, so far they managed to make me actually LIKE Cat-Ra, & the original Cat-Ra fucking sucks. Shadow Weaver sucked & so far at least this reboot Shadow Weaver is actually intimidating. But man, you better fuckin' impress me show, because the lack of Skeletor is felt deep within my soul.
OH wait hold on.
Tumblr media
Okay I see why everyone said this show is gay now.
Anyways I didn't mean to ramble on this long about the show in just one episode, I promise this is gonna be a rare occurrence. I think from now on, I'll keep it shortened to just one paragraph per post. I'll only pull out these long posts when I finish a season or something.
Tumblr media
Anyways uh:
-Glimmer is the best
-I'm sorry but I'm not over the skeletor thing WHY DID YOU NOT USE HIM HE WAS RIGHT THERE-

Heya, been watching Mr bean lately and thought I'd ask you if there's anything I should know about the bean lore
i deadass almost responded 'why are you watching mr bean' on its own, but hey. it's not every day i get an ask like this. it's actually a common fan misconception that I like Mr Bean all that much, but I'll still attempt to answer this question in good faith. first question to ask is, animated or live action?
for the live action show, I could talk about it for quite a long time, but long story short, it was created by the same creative team as Blackadder's first season (more or less), with Rowan Atkinson starring, Atkinson and Richard Curtis co-writing and Howard Goodall scoring the show. The famous chorale arrangement of the Mr Bean theme is actually real Latin too. Something people forget about Rowan Atkinson is incredibly well educated. In fact, him, Richard Curtis and Howard Goodall all met in Oxford college iirc.
The first line of the live action series theme literally translates as 'behold the man who is bean'. Beyond that, the only real surface level live action lore I can really think of, off the top of my head, is that Mr Bean has co-acted with Willem Dafoe, has destroyed priceless artwork, has been driven around downtown LA while flipping the bird at people he passed, was almost briefly named 'mr cauliflower', etc. Oh, also, Mr Bean isn't fully mute in the live action series, like in the pilot, where he speaks at length before sitting for a university math examination that he isn't prepared to take. So, yes, Mr Bean has canonically attended a university.
I do have a pretty big theory that alleges that Doug Walker's relationship with the Nostalgia Critic is more or less the same as Rowan Atkinson's with Mr Bean, but I refuse to explain Mr Bean lore if I feel it may come up later on in a trial or contribute to me ending up in a padded cell somewhere, so you'll just have to sit and wonder, I'm afraid.
OKAY, onto the cartoon series. The important thing to remember about the cartoon series is that it had two iterations. The run of the Mr Bean cartoon was aired in the early 2000's. Rowan Atkinson was apparently in the writer's room for it, and Mr Bean, like in official media, is semi-mute in it. He often just emotes using various grunts, but can utter short sentences. The animation is very fluid and the characters frequently go off model in order to appear more expressive. The episode plots were also pretty off the wall in comparison to the second iteration. You know the Citadel of Ricks in Rick and Morty, where Rick meets a whole space ship full of identical clones of himself? Yeah, it's canon to Mr Bean too, but y'know. It's the Citadel of Beans, I guess.
youtube
In case the embedded timestamp doesn't automatically work, jump to 9:02 and watch until at least 9:13. Or don't watch any of it at all. Your call. Also no, it's not a dream sequence or anything like that, it's fully canon and really happening. It also implies that Mr Bean remembers that he's an alien for the rest of the series. The scene even ends with the direct implication that the fan theory that live action Mr Bean is an alien IS correct. (Some have speculated that he was perhaps a fallen angel too.) By the way, I'm linking to a shitty fan reupload so this Mr Bean clip instead of any of the readily available public resources because fuck YOU Mr Bean, I refuse to give you your now undeserved 10th of a cent in ad revenue after your DISGRACEFUL NFT line. More on that later.
After they finished up with the early 2000's cartoon series, the show went off the air for a literal decade and then they brought it back, out of nowhere, with rigid (and decidedly cheaper to produce) digital animation. You could compare the change in animation to, say, The Simpsons or Family Guy, where the art style remains the same for every design/background that's borrowed from the older seasons, but now everything moves stiffly/robotically. Newer one-off character designs are also way flatter and less cartoonish, as if the creative juices that went into the original cartoon series are... gone.
I have to say, I haven't seen all of these episodes because they're really not very good. The writing is a lot worse. Mr Bean just constantly talks for some reason, which feels like a pretty stark abandonment of the core tenets of the character imo. Come to think of it, the other recurring characters (like his landlord, Mrs Wicket) is also strangely out of character. Long story short, they just don't care anymore.
The funny thing about the baffling Mr Bean NFT line is that, well, there's basically 4 'eras' of Mr Bean... at least, according to how I group it. Era 1 is the live action series, era 2 is made up of the 2 feature length Mr Bean movies (I group them together, despite them coming out over a decade apart as they don't really connect directly to the main Mr Bean lore and take place outside of London), era 3 is the early 2000's run of the cartoon, and the era 4 is the 2010's cartoon reboot.
Of ALL of the 4 possible places they could pull content from, only ONE iteration of Mr Bean contained digital, pre-cropped assets... The cartoon reboot, which the production company that owns the rights to the character (Tiger Aspect Productions) obviously had, leading to this really strange revisionism (more or less gaslighting) from the Mr Bean brand, like "hey, remember Mr Bean? Remember him? He has an NFT line now! Remember Mr Bean? BUY BUY BUY" Which is funny, because statistically, of all of the four eras, the shitty cartoon reboot is the only era that does not contain anything that interesting to talk about, and is the only one that doesn't contain memorable Mr Bean media, arguably.
Some people 100% remember the time Mr Bean put an armchair on TOP of his car and drove it around in the live action series. Some people remember watching the movies in the theater as a kid and some people remember the zany episodes of the early cartoon series, which aired on Nickelodeon owned channels in the early 2000's... Nobody remembers the time Mr Bean set up a pizza place called 'pizza bean'. Seriously, there's several episodes in the new animated series where the guy just starts up a get rich quick scheme, which falls apart by the end of the episode. It's like Ed, Edd 'n' Eddy, except instead of the Ed boys, you're stuck in an elevator alone with an our of character Mr Bean.
So, yeah, the company REALLY milked the final seasons of the cartoon, despite it being the worst Mr Bean content, because that way, they could produce easy content that didn't require any more work. They don't even get Rowan Atkinson in for voices most of the time they make 'new material', just using recycled clips from a Mr Bean soundboard. The entire NFT line, by the way, is just random frames from the cartoon reboot placed against re-used backgrounds from the show, or just in front of a gradient/solid colour. Pretty cheeky given that they minted these NFTS for, get this, over $100 each. I personally wouldn't even accept someone else's money in exchange for having to own a Mr Bean NFT, so I can't imagine who'd actually spend their hard earned money on such a thing.
I could keep going, but sooner or later, an Al-Qaeda sniper is gonna take me out if I keep typing, so best quit while I'm ahead. You were a FOOL to have read this

I haven't talked enough about Jackie Chan Adventures. This show is highly underrated imo, at least from the basis that I never hear ANYONE talk about it, even when conversations are especially nostalgic of this time period. For a saturday morning kind-of cartoon, it's super solid and enthralling -- when it has an actual ongoing plot, that is.
The action is standout most of the time, classic Jackie Chan combat that's fun and lively and keeps you guessing. It takes a very special eye for choreography to make up these fights, that utilize the surroundings and situation for exciting effects, all while keeping up the intensity. Jackie is just short of being superhuman in this show, but you wouldn't guess that because of how every combat plays out, where Jackie genuinely feels outmatched by any opponent(s), but uses his wit and reflexes to totally turnaround a fight and clown on people. It's so satisfying seeing thugs surround Jackie, with weapons and everything, and he does some sort of Popeyes bullshit where the thugs are dressed in each others clothes and a broom halfway up their ass while Jackie is sitting on top of a ladder like a monkey. Keeping action sequences fresh is Jade's interference, a noncombatant that is vulnerable, but is more than happy and crafty enough to use magical talismans of experimental technology; Uncle similarly fits the role of a vulnerable character that can still stand on his own from time to time. It's a good chemistry that makes it so no fight is ever guaranteed to go the way Jackie or the audience wants it to.
As for being a comedy, it usually does a decent job. There's a lot of quick jokes here that can fly past you, and there's also a fuckton of animal puns for every talisman. There's a huuuuge list of running gags in the show, but most of them are funny enough and spaced out so that they don't wear out their welcome. I love when Jackie quickly steals something from someone and says he'll bring it back, which he never does; Uncle's "one more thing" is so iconic; it always gets me the ridiculous ways Jade manages to sneak out and follow Jackie, mostly because it's hilarious that Jackie still earnestly tries to tell her to wait at the hotel or something lol.
All of this works wonderfully when the show has an actual plotline to follow. I'm only halfway through season two, which reveals a lot of the show's weaknesses. When the show is about finding talismans or demon gates, there's a ton of fun in figuring everything out, like what the talismans do, where the gate is located, what kind of demon will be summoned, etc. But season two has a loooong stretch of episodes that come after the "finale," all of them being disjointed, independent stories that just... aren't interesting. They very much feel like leftover scripts for what could have been normal episodes involving talismans or whatever, but without that plotline to put it into a greater structure, these episodes just standout as having nothing going on. These episodes bring in new villains and side characters, but it's hard to feel invested when you know they're just gonna disappear right afterwards -- I definitely remember catching these episodes live on tv as a kid and even thinking back then, "damn it's one of THESE episodes."
But otherwise the show is great. Jackie is an adorable protagonist, the dynamics of his family and allies make for extremely compelling television, especially for kids. It's a plot that's just meant to be loved, a beloved actor represented as an adventurous archaeologist, with his wily niece sidekick that gets to join in on his secret agent missions that take them all over the world, discovering ancient magic and myths along the way. It's not the first show to do ever do this, but it's execution is very good, especially for an early-2000s era show.
Also, god I love the Dark Hand. What a perfect group of cartoon villains and henchmen. I love the pecking order, with Shendu > Valmont >>> Tohru or Hak Fu >>>>>> Finn, Ratso, and Chow; there's always someone getting barked at and blamed for everything, and it's especially funny in season two when Shendu has to answer to his siblings, so even he gets brought down a peg. I love how Tohru changes sides which allows Hak Fu to take on a permanent role, a great change in power dynamics that makes everyone feel more human and involved. The plotline with Shendu possessing Valmont is perfect irony, a fantastic way to kick off the second season and make it immediately more distinct from the last. And they're all just so fucking funny, definitely the highlights of any episode.

experiencing and re-experiencing some more adult cartoons with ash, and i’ve been thinking about them so here’s my thoughts, in a big jumble of words that will be annoying to read through so they’re under a cut
two episodes of Mission Hill that i remembered enjoying in the past: i watched these by myself like a month ago because i was bored and depressed. not really as good as i remembered, not unwatchable but like, not good enough to make me want to rewatch the whole series, even if it is only 11 or so episodes long. i never ended up buying this one on DVD, i don’t think i got as into it as i did with Home Movies and Futurama back in 2013. i think it really comes down to Andy French not having any redeeming qualities, nor being that funny to watch. oops. i don’t think its bad for an adult cartoon though, and it had a kind of appealing visual style. i think i read somewhere that it was one of the last hand inked and colored cartoons to air, but i could be wrong because i’m too lazy to fact check that right now. the theme song is good, i guess its a cake song with the lyrics stripped out and i think the lyrics to that song are gross so i guess its nice to have a short version without those
almost all of Venture Bros, skipping episodes that, from their wikipedia descriptions, sounded completely appalling and not important: ash had watched this show years back but i never saw it until now, and... there’s some good stuff there, but there’s so many overwhelmingly terrible things that i can’t imagine recommending it to anybody. ultimately i ended up enjoying it a lot, but man. season 2 actually seemed to get worse than season 1, and then it took until around season 5-6 for it to get anywhere near consistently good. also apparently seasons are released once every two years now so that sucks! right when it started to get really interesting and i was getting invested in the characters. dang. i liked the new wave jokes, the episode that was an elaborate parody of a specific duran duran music video was a pretty big highlight for me.
(((don’t take this as a recommendation, ash warned me that at some point (around season 3) there would be a pedophile in the main cast and there... definitely is, and you can’t actually skip around him because he’s in almost every episode, and eventually they drop that element of him and have him be ‘reformed’ and have a much smaller role but boy is he there and its not funny or good and all they had to do was like, not make that character a pedophile but they sure did that. also it can be extremely racist- also toned down in later seasons but like... yeah this is probably the worst of these shows i’ve watched from a moral perspective, and i wish it was better because it has probably the best story arcs and world building out of any of these)))
the first three episodes of Home Movies: i thought this would be way worse than i remembered but so far its actually a little better than i remembered!! only three episodes in though, so we’re still in the era of Mostly Improv- i’m hoping most of the less-improvised episodes will also hold up to me, i’m a big fan of it. also back in 2013 i got obsessed and bought the whole box set, so it’d be cool if i ended up not regretting that purchase after we rewatch the whole thing. not looking forward to the l*uis ck character in season 2 or 3 or whenever he shows up, though
I think the only other adult cartoons I ever really got into were:
The Simpsons (but like, the early seasons that almost everyone likes, and this one i enjoyed in a casual way without ever going into hyperfixation mode about it, which i honestly appreciate!! it is exhausting getting invested in stuff that you know you won’t care nearly as much about in a year)
Futurama got wildly obsessed and bought the first four seasons on DVD, as well as some action figures that i now genuinely don’t know what to do with because i don’t care about the characters anymore. but i’m confident its way worse than i remember it being and don’t really want to rewatch it right now, plus those DVDs are at my parent’s house. whoops. sorry futurama. what the fuck am i going to do with those fry and professor farnsworth action figures, i saved the boxes but my mom threw them away when they moved so for now they’re just sitting at my parent’s house with the DVDs.
Clone High- i think i’ve watched the whole thing through twice? it was fairly consistent, iirc, i don’t think i want to rewatch it again anytime soon and i remember some shitty stuff but it had some memorable funny moments. i liked the littering episode
Rick and Morty- god i have to add this one onto the end because i forgot i’d watched it. i watched season one and mostly enjoyed it because i generally like sci-fi and improv, and then the creator was so openly shitty on social media and the last episode of season 1 was so bad that i just never watched it again when it came back. and then it got that really horrible fanbase and the memes and yeah i’m not coming back to that one, season one wasn’t even that good looking back
i think that’s all of them, give or take some episodes of other shows that i watched because i was in the same room when they were playing. i didn’t like any of those ones at all!!! i guess one or two episodes I saw of Bob’s Burgers were okay, but not really good enough for me to decide that i was actually gonna sit down and commit to watching the show
after we rewatch Home Movies we’ll finally give Bojack Horseman another try- we tried watching like, the first 5 episodes of it a couple years ago and didn’t like it, but Venture Bros was a lot ethically worse than most of the other cartoons i watched back then and we managed to get through 7 seasons of that in the past two weeks so maybe this time we’ll make it through to the good parts of Bojack everyone talks about
after that i dunno, i can’t think of any others i’d really WANT to watch. maybe someday, there’ll be an adult cartoon that can exist without having prison rape jokes, or wildly racist caricatures, or transmisogyny when i look back on it. maybe bojack succeeds at those basic ass things? i know it has shitty moments but maybe not those specific horrible ones!! ohhh boy
adult swim will probably not be where this cartoon will come from, when it does finally come to exist

If you're still playing the ship game, how about Clark x Lois? I got curious since you like SuperWonder. I'm a huge fan of SuperWonder so it made me so delighted to know there's another shipper there! I'm really curious how do you feel about Clark with Lois since it's quite a popular ship. Only if you don't mind of course :)
I'm technically playing a different ship ask game right now, but sure I can do.
Though this is, uh... complicated? So let's try to answer that in chronological order. This is going to show a progress from NOTP to couldn't care less to actually really cute ship, because each adaptation does it incredibly differently.
The first version of Clark and Lois that I consciously met (I watched the old Lois & Clark show when I was very little and have literally no memories of it at all so I don't think that can be counted) was on Smallville.
That just catapulted the ship on the top of my DC NOTPs. I truly hate Smallville!Lois and I hated the way she treated Clark, he deserved so much better than that. And a very important factor in this ship and ships like it is trust for me - if a character has a huge secret and keeps it for literal seasons and years of having grown close to their supposed endgame love interest, I just... I don't see love there. Love means trust. Especially when said character has no problem sharing their secret with other third parties. If you can't trust them to tell them the truth, then you don't trust them enough to love them. This was the worst possible introduction to this ship.
And afterward, no adaptation really... did... anything with them.
I mean, seriously, watching Superman movies or seeing them on cartoons, Clark and Lois are simply treated as default, not as an actual relationship that needs to be established and built. They are together because they are together and the adaptations do virtually nothing to establish why they are together, why they love each other and some not even really why they care for each other.
Most prominently the animated movie verse. Before Clois, this movie verse spent multiple movies showing Clark growing close to Diana, building up trust and romance and falling in love and we saw them actually interact within their relationship too.
And then the time for the first solo Superman movie came and... with no actual reason given, Clark and Diana were broken up and with literally no reason given, Clark and Lois were suddenly already an established relationship. The very least they could have done was to give us one (1) Superman solo movie where we see them interact and fall in love and get together. No, the first solo movie and after multiple movies of seeing him in a mutually loving relationship with someone else, he is now suddenly with Lois and the verse shows us absolutely no reason why or how that happened.
And that's just... the theme. They think that "everyone knows these two are a couple" is enough of a short-hand and they don't have to do any heavy lifting on making one care about this relationship.
The latest version of theirs that I have met is in the Arrowverse, in Superman & Lois and I admit, I did not want to watch that show at first because of the feelings I had built up for this ship at that point. A huge seller was Tyler Hoechlin, who I truly do think is perfect as Clark Kent. And then they did Crisis and Lois was there - but she was more than just there.
She supported him. He supported her. They fought side by side, they were shown to genuinely care about each other and treat each other as equals. So I figured, okay, I'll give the show a shot, can still drop it if it's hot garbage.
And Superman & Lois has SUCH A GOOD CLOIS. I actually love them??
Within the first episode already, this show established better that Clark and Lois love each other and why and how they love each other than any other version of them that I've ever seen.
They make their decisions together, as a united front. They communicate, talk about both their feelings and also their problems. They figure out solutions for said problems together. They parent together, they support each other in all respects.
This is a relationship of mutual trust and love, of two equals who clearly respect one another. And that is the kind of ship I dig. And that is what most other adaptations of them have failed to show for them, which is just... a real pity?
Because I don't actually want to dislike any ship. Especially not a canon ship that can not be avoided if you want to interact with canon. I would prefer to ship all the canon ships. And I'm a multishipper at heart, there is no reason I can't enjoy Clark with someone else aside from Diana (and heck, reading the SuperWonder comics actually did make me very curious in them as an OT3 because I enjoy the Diana/Lois dynamic).
I would like to see more versions like Superman & Lois that do the ship justice and make them a beautiful, trusting and loving relationship that I can 100% root for and squeal about when they're being cute on screen.
Send me a ship and I will explain why I do or don't ship it

I'm going to make a response to a SU video made a few years ago by @robobuddies, who goes by "Red Van Buskirk" the video is called "The Steven universe rant." The video was uploaded in 8 Sep in 2017.
Keep the date in mind because is going to become important later.
I going to refer to Red Van Buskirk as "they/them" since they prefer these pronouns and "Red Van" for short.
And don't harass this person in social media! This is supossed to be a response. Nothing else. I'm saying this because i know how things work. So, don't bully them. OK?
I'm not going to make a rebuttal of every single tiny detail because the video is 40 minutes long and the creator of the video sometimes jumps from one point to another and loses focus on what they are talking about:
First they start the video with a Disclaimer: "I'm going to be harsh and hyperbolic for the sake of entertainment".
Now here's my problem: i get sometimes youtube critics want to play a "persona" but sometimes comes off more as an lazy excuse to avoid criticism. This has happened before with Cinema Sins many times. It's not exactly a very good way of starting your video, specially if you want to be considered a profesional or be taken seriously.
Like if i'm going to give my opinion about something, i do it, i don't say "It's just my persona", i want to honest with my mutuals and people who like my content.
They also mention how the SU fandom can't take criticism and sometimes consider everything a personal attack. While i agree this fandom can be a living nightmare, the reason of why we sometimes get so mad is because people who sometimes do these types of rants don't do their research about the show, the video gets millions of views and well..
Which goes to my next point:
-Red Van, you need to do your research.
A huge part of the video they talk about the animation behind the show and mention "Motorcity" as a good example of composition.
Here's the thing: They barely mention which programs the creators use to create these shows or the animation studios which is quite a problem if you are going to talk about animation for half of your video.
"Motorcity is animated with a combination of Flash, Maya and After Effects – with backgrounds and other elements created in Photoshop."
"Created by Chris Prynoski, Motorcity is produced by Robin Red Breast, Inc. (a subsidiary of Titmouse, Inc.) and Disney Television Animation."
Link (X)
Steven universe was animated by two korean studios: Summin and Rough Draft
Link (X)
The programs the crewniverse used to animate Steven universe Link: (X)
They mention how the animators of Steven universe were "lazy" for not making the scene of "Mr.Greg"- Is over, isn't it? More interesting..
Here's the thing.. they wanted to:
Tumblr media
This was the original concept but they didn't have time to animate it into the show. They were time restraints to animate it.
Link that talks about the episode Mr.Greg and the animatic: (X)
Now this episode "Mr.Greg" came out in 2016, and Red Van's SU video rant was uploaded in September 2017. That's like an year to find that post.. so why didn't they search for it?
They complain about the writers forgeting about the powers of the characters.. So, i'm just going to leave this right here from a SU reddit AMA:
Tumblr media
The writers kinda came up with some powers but they also had a list of what powers they could do.
Now to be fair to Red Van, this AMA was made in way after their video, so i can't blame them for not knowing this detail.
They also mention how the gems don't use their powers to catch Peridot: The issue with this argument is that the gems had no idea how Gem Homeworld technology had changed and Peridot had tons of tricks to get the upper hand. And the gems only fight Peridot two times in season 2 before they catch her in "Catch and Release". That's why they catch her quickly in "Catch and Release" they already know her tricks and catch her by surprise.
"Peridot is coming. And we don't know who or what she'll be coming with. She's a modern gem with modern gem technology that's bound to overpower us." -Garnet Political Power
They also complain about Amethyst not using her shapeshifting powers to catch Peridot.. but later in "Message received" Amethyst shapeshifts into a helicopter to stop Peridot and her robot.. why they don't mention this?
Tumblr media
Amethyst also used her shapeshifting powers in other battles (Ocean gem, Steven vs Amethyst).. they brieftly mention this for a second but don't go into much detail in their video.
In one part of their video they talk about the writing..they fail to mention how the process works.
Here's is how it works:
"As some of you know, Steven Universe is a storyboard driven show, meaning a team of storyboard artists are given an outline off of which they write all of the dialogue and storyboard the episode.  The job of the outline, and my job, is to give them the basic framework for the episode - the story."
Link to Ben Levin post (X).
Here's is another one about Ian talking about the writing process: (X)
Now the Ben Levin post about writing is from 11 sep 2015. I think with 10-15 minutes you can find the post. And if i remember correctly it was even in the SU subreddit. And is from the episode "Lion 3"
They also mention Adventure time several times in their rant to compare it to Steven universe.
Now wasn't Adventure Time a storyboard driven show like Steven universe?
Well, yes.
"Each episode of Adventure Time takes about nine months to produce and begins in a writer’s room with series creator Ward, producers Adam Muto and Kent Osborne, and staff writer Jack Pendarvis. From that meeting, they generate a barebones, two-page outline. Those outlines are handed over to one of four storyboard teams who have two weeks to visually outline the episode. “They’re basically directing,” says Osborne. “They’re writing all the jokes, editing the outline, picking all the camera shots… what the episode is going to look like.”

It's also worth of mentioning that Rebecca Sugar worked previously on Adventure time.. i think Red Van doesn't mention this detail in their video.
Rebecca Sugar was nominated for the episodes : "It Came from the Nightosphere" and "Simon and Marcy". She storyboarded " I Remember you" which has one of the most iconic moments in modern western animation. ( People who complain about Steven universe but like Adventure time rarely seem to mention this detail).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Link (X) (Episodes she storyboarded in Adventure time)
There is also one point they just start nitpicking and tearing down the show, which reminds me of Cinema sins, except is not as funny.
Red Van, what you are doing here in this part can be done with any other show and is a very easy thing to do. I could also make a 30 minute rant of MotorCity or tmnt 2012 nitpicking every tiny detail but it's not exactly good criticism.
They later complain about the Steven universe perspective..
I leave this here,is from that same SU AMA reddit i mentioned earlier in the post which explains the Steven's perspective.
Tumblr media
Now, i didn't have a problem with the Steven only perspective. In many ways its what makes the story of SU work. We learn about the world as Steven learns. The more Steven grows, the more we learn things aren't as simple as they seemed to be.
Characters sometimes will hold information about X person from Steven, so he's forced to ask other characters about it.
It seems to be suggestive since i only actually started paying attention to it when people brought it up. Like, it wasn't such a big deal for me.
Now i could go on and on with this response but i would like to leave it here.
What do i think of this video? If i was a teacher and a student tried to show me a video like this for my class, i would probably ask the student to make it again. Not because it complains about Steven universe, is just is poorly organized in some parts and lacks proper research.
As someone who likes analyzing media is quite difficult for me to take this rant seriously. It has issues and is like those Cinema sins videos but isn't that funny.
And there's one more thing:
I found this youtube comment in which Red Van admitted that they should have done more research into the show production and animation. At least is good to know they are honest and say they made some mistakes in their video.
Tumblr media
The problem is that.. well.. since their Steven universe rant many others have cited their work and their video has 1 million of views... even though it contain a few errors that the creator admitted.
I wouldn't call Red Van a bad person, they actually are nice. However.. Their SU video is a bit misguided and somewhat problematic. But is not the worst thing ever.

How come it seems like lm and jds can talk more candidly about their intentions regarding other ships like allurance and even k/l but not sheith? I don't understand why they can clarify things like allurance and how it was there from the beginning or flat out state that they never intended for k/l to be a thing, but when it comes to the topic of shiro and keith they won't just clarify what they did or did not intend/want their relationship to be? I'm confused by it. :(
Ooof this is an excellent question and I suspect a complicated one.
First off, they can be candid about Allurance because 1) it’s a hetero couple (and therefore “acceptable” to executives and conservative parents) and 2) it was strongly implied and built up for almost the entirety of the series before they officially, canonically, became a couple. There’s no ambiguity there. They can be candid about kl because Allurance technically “kills” the ship by virtue of existing, but more importantly kl is the fanship that they have been directly asked about on more than one occasion and probably straight up badgered about it more times than we’re aware of. When your production studio gets blackmailed in the hopes of making k/l canon, that ship is being brought to your attention.
Also, Afterbuzz is run by kl fans who have anti-like tendencies. They angle kl questions in nearly every interview, and I was pretty miffed by the way in this interview they heavily, heavily implied that only Sheith fans hated s8 “because their ship didn’t become canon” and yet in the same breath talked about how Allurance wasn’t good and came out of nowhere (something JDS delightfully shut down). In the live chat for the recent interview, people from all ship alignments kept begging the hosts to ask about why SK’s friendship wasn’t included in the final season. In the saltiest tone you can imagine, one of the more vocal kl hosts decided to answer the question (”they helped each other grow and evolve and since they’ve done that, we don’t need to see their friendship anymore, it got lots of screentime in other seasons”) and never let the showrunners actually speak on it, instead moving swiftly to another topic that aligned more with the hosts’ own interests. It was almost like she was afraid of what the answer would be. Was she afraid they’d say “well actually, on the matter of that, Sheith was our intended endgame” or was she trying to save them from having to talk about something NDAs prevented them from talking about?
So why CAN’T they talk Sheith? I have a few theories. This gets long and a little rambly, so I’ve thrown it under a cut.
1) Don’t ask, don’t tell. Except for post-s7, the showrunners themselves have never been asked about Sheith’s relationship in an interview. I think most Sheiths were afraid of rocking the boat and potentially upending a SK endgame by drawing too much attention to it. We were/are definitely the quieter side of the primary vld ships and honestly most of us were not expecting our ship to be canon.
But vld ships and the ship wars are notorious across geekdom for vitriol and death threats, and the creators didn’t want to add any fodder to either side. In the middle of production it would have benefited no one for the EPs to say, “yeah sheith is meant to be viewed romantically” or “no, we can’t go back and change the story to make that true”. Either one would have resulted in an uptick of harassment from antis towards them, towards other fans. And nevermind the production side where DW/WEP weren’t ready for even a hint of m/m until right before s7 dropped. It was only AFTER they got the greenlight on gay Shiro that showrunners could finally be vague and say “some people will interpret [sk] as brothers, others will say it’s 100% confirmed they’re in a relationship”. Which is, in my opinion, a pretty interesting way to respond to that question. But again, if that interviewer hadn’t been brave enough to ask it, I highly doubt it’s something that the showrunners themselves would have ever brought up.
2) Sheith was actually intended to be romantic, but was blocked. We know now that Adam being greenlit as Shiro’s boyfriend happened right before (like a week or less) before s7 dropped. This was a show that had been in production for almost 4 years by this point, and the showrunners stated they picked Shiro to be their rep early on in the process. When they planted that idea in executive’s heads is anyone’s guess, as is when the proper fight for it began. I suspect their immediate team of directors, writers, and in-house producers were well aware and supportive, but kicking that up the chain was another story. I also have a suspicion that it wasn’t until season 6 was complete that the matter was brought up because greenlighting everything we got in s6 knowing Shiro was gay the whole time puts a lot of eyes on Keith.
And really, it was Keith who was the problem all along.
In every version of Voltron, Keith is the main protagonist. He’s the leader of the team, the primary “image” of Voltron, and thus, certain things about him need to be maintained. I’m not sure if this is sheer coincidence or not, but he is the only person on the team who stayed visually the same to his OG counterpart. All of the other paladins have gone from white dudes (and a white lady) to POC, or have had a genderswap. There is much debate about Keith’s race with people creating their own headcanons but ultimately Keith can pass as white. While the handbook states Lance is Cuban, Hunk is half black-half Samoan, Shiro is Japanese and even Pidge gets “Italian”, Keith is just listed as... human. Which is a surefire way to not upset fans who have HC’d him as POC while also not-NOT saying he’s white. Everybody “wins”.
In addition I’m confident a major stipulation of the OG Voltron owners (the “gatekeepers”, as a few of the VAs and the showrunners themselves have darkly alluded to) was that Keith could not be LGBT. We know now he was meant to end up with Acxa, a fact that was already obvious to many of us from their Weblum meetcute. But that relationship was never scripted.
Setting aside the fact that the OG Voltron owners (WEP) didn’t want Keith to be LGBT, I’m sure executives at Dreamworks would have struggled with the idea as well. Shiro stans can come at me all they like about this but Keith was always meant to be the primary protagonist of the show, of every version of Voltron, and making the main, masculine hero of a well-trodden, oft-rebooted franchise gay/bi would have been an ENORMOUS move for animation. Making him end up with the other main, masculine hero would have honestly broken the internet and the minds of countless conservative executives, and been a major benchmark not just for cartoons, but ALL media. Animation often trails behind TV and movies in terms of social progress because something something “protect the chillllldrennn”. And right now I’m struggling to think of a popular live action TV show, or movie, with an older audience, where the main masculine hero is lgbt, and in a relationship with the other main masculine hero. Feel free to offer me examples in replies but the fact that I’m struggling to think of anything is pretty telling. In short, if this revolutionary move still isn’t happening for the live action 13+ audience, asking for it to happen on a cartoon with a 7-11yo boy demographic is like asking for the moon. Keith couldn’t be gay, because immediately it would have been obvious to anyone that he was already very much in love with the other LGBT character on the show. Hell, it’s already pretty obvious in canon that this is the case, and dodging the question about his sexuality is dodging the confirmation that he’s in love with Shiro.
Tumblr media
I’d like to believe that one of the solutions to the Adam Problem that was proposed was that KEITH ends up with Shiro, but they were laughed out of the office. The pair’s incredibly close bond aside, it would have been the absolute easiest fix production-wise. They already have their shared history doing most of the legwork, all that’d have to be changed is:
-adding Shiro to the L/K scene in 8x01, just sitting there as Keith encouraged Lance.-Re-recording a couple of Shiro’s lines in 8x05 to make him seem at least somewhat upset that Keith was kidnapped-Showing Keith and Shiro hanging out in the video episode. You could just use the shot of Keith and Pidge but replace Pidge with Shiro.
And the best part is, you could change just one or two of these and then do the wedding epilogue you always intended (but write something that doesn’t insist Shiro retired) but with Keith instead of Rando. Not to mention, there is a slight, slight possibility there was a S/K scene (or two) cut along the way. I strongly disagree with the theories that have floated around about the “massive edits” done to s8, but I think there could be truth to the idea that a Sheith scene was cut to make room for Crew Member, or an effort made to downplay the Sheith friendship that comes off way more intimate than any interaction Shiro has with [man]. It’s more likely that SK scenes never existed at all in this season as the showrunners had to cave to pressures to “have more action”, had no idea what to do with Shiro besides relegate him to a stiff cardboard general, and perhaps had to follow strict instructions about the kind of friendliness an out & proud gay man could show to the men he’d enjoyed good interactions with before.
All this to say, the Sheith battle is messy. It’s fine for the showrunners to say “getting the greenlight for Shiro was a battle” because it’s a battle they won that makes everyone look pretty good. It makes Dreamworks look like they Learned Something and are going to be more open to LGBT content in future properties. It makes WEP look not-terrible because they can add “allowed a character who wasn’t really an OG Voltron character to be gay” to their list of “generous” things they allowed for this re-envisioning of their property. It’s self-congrats all around.
Blocking Sheith has the opposite effect. It reveals that WEP is homophobic because they could allow Pidge to be a girl and Allura to be black but making the hero a non-straight man? That’s TOO FAR. It reveals that Dreamworks higherups are homophobic because they weren’t ready for two LGBT protagonists, just one plus a background character with 3 lines who is literally never named. No one wins, and to be asked about Shiro and Keith and be honest about it could potentially be the showrunners saying, “god, we wanted to, but we were blocked at every single turn”. And thus DW and WEP are the outed villains of the story.
3) Shiro and Keith were never meant to be read as romantic. The showrunners don’t say anything because there’s simply nothing to say. Sometimes the most incredible ships are happy accidents. Sometimes people genuinely don’t realize what they’re doing. I felt a little disheartened watching the AB interview because the way they talked about wanting to include more [man], or how they “hoped viewers would read between the lines” re:Shiro/Curtains, was so casual and flippant it was like they genuinely thought most people would be fine with Shirando if only there had been more scenes between them, as though completely severing Shiro’s relationship with Keith and instead only showing scenes of Shiro bonding with a new character would come off as a good move rather than a baffling (and somewhat hurtful) one.
I do believe that certain directors were absolutely fans of the pair and angled in what they could. Chris Palmer is behind the famous “shiro loves you baby” art and responsible for the eps that include Shiro’s gay panic, the Sheith hug, “As many times as it takes”, Shiro falling into Keith’s arms, and “We have to stop, Shiro’s out there!!” among others. Steve Ahn was the director behind 2x01, 3x01 with heavily grieving Keith, Blade of Marmora, and the episode where Keith screams Shiro’s name so loud he astral projects and then Shiro holds his hands over the controls. He also got really soft when he talked about the pair in an episode of Form Podcast (before JDS kinda hastily shut him down). And even Eugene Lee, he directed The Black Paladins which is an episode so Sheith I still can’t believe it’s real, and 7x01, the other episode so Sheith I can’t believe it’s real. All three of these guys were the original series directors, which is pretty inchresting.
But that doesn’t mean the showrunners were necessarily onboard. Maybe it was really important to them to show a positive male friendship since that never happens in media, just as they felt having Allura sacrifice herself was a powerful feminist move. However the thing I keep circling back to is JDS’ early interview about The Winter Soldier and how if he ever got the chance to do that, he hoped it would be in the future when things could be more progressive, hinting that he wanted to throw more overt romantic undertones if he himself ever got a fight like that to write or direct. It’s pretty interesting that he wrote the Black Paladins, which mirrors the Stucky fight in Winter Soldier so much that it actually rotoscopes one of Bucky’s moves. I’d also point out that JDS’ favorite characters are Shiro and Keith, and I find it impossible to be a fan of both and not also be a fan of how much they love each other, and how much that love straddles the line between romantic love and friendship.
This got long, but I hope it was helpful. The likely final-ever showrunner interview will be on Let’s Voltron sometime this month, and I do hope that now that the series is over someone is brave enough to ask them, “so... what was going on between Shiro and Keith? In a perfect world, what would have happened there?”. In a way it doesn’t matter though. There is always the risk of them saying “nothing was going on there” and us agonizing over whether that was a lie to protect their careers or bald-faced honesty in the face of an NDA or fucks-given that might have expired with their contracts.
But I think the best we can hope for is the same situation that happened with the Avatar creators and that live action movie: 3 years from now when the NDAs are well and truly expired, JDS & LM may come out and say, “SO, on the matter of Shiro and Keith, it’s time to come clean.”

FINALY!!!
Tumblr media
Hello . My name is...well I guess I.. well how about you can just call me Dayrl for now. You see my story ... It is true, very true well the beginning is any way. Oh though how I wish this was a true story. The true story though has not yet occurred. If I'm to change my life would to change my life and find the one I was destined to meet. I'd have to find the one the cupcacake of my eye that for years or more I might of gone without noticing. I'd have to go through hell to find true love. I'd was going to be sent through life's emotional hell.
But that is later
This... is where my story began...for now...
My pony life started in high school. I don't even rember much of it, and I know I did not know about fan fictions back then. What had happened is that I saw this kid with really cool shirt with on and it something really cool on it with a rainbow maybe ?
Tumblr media
Yeah that it defintaly not the design that was on the shirt but it is 20% cooler
So I asked the dude about it his shirt I mean he said it was from a short about ponies now at I was uncertain but I'm really open minded and also I was in high school so i think that was at the time where I was more use to watching cartoons so theres that by the way it may now be important but I really love to brag ... So you know the really famous season four tirek episode where twilight had the power of four Alicorns and when she when to battle tirek the stated exchangeing blows and beams energy waves throwing rocks at each other having a good ol time well I watched as .... It ... Aired ... Which alot of people can say that they did that to but ya know like I said l love to brag
Tumblr media
#overlyadzaderatedartparody
So now ya know how I came to the fandom that's well and good and I really don't remember alot after that other than ya know watching the episodes now and then but if knew then what I know now ...... Well I often say don't it's not got look at the past unless your looking to learn
Now apparently ..... Very apparently I seem to have falling away from the fandom at sompoint and I think it it a fairly simple reason that I faced a problem that all us bronies have to and will learn to over come if we want in this fan community
Prejudice
Mockink, taunting teasing
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rejection
Eventually if you can't get over something like that and face your problems your fears and lack of self confidence you become ..... Lost alone ....unhappy you will be unable to move on with life... like...
Now eventually after a while I found the fandom again I don't really want to say ... Hoooo....huuummmm I guess if I'm going to be telling this story I'm going to be honest with you
#apples
#honesty
#elementofhonesty
#applejack
So any way here it I'm not what a normal person would call normal ...or at the very least average I have these psychological disorders there called autism, ADHD, ADD, OCD, and plethora of behavior probelems you see growing not the best behaved i had a lot of social issues and trouble making friends on account of my autism and the fact my dad had passed away when I was two and technicaly speaking im still not the best behaved or social
any way I was in this assisted liveing home becaus my mom need a break from me a person with less .... Metal advantages sometimes just can't handel you all the time and one day i was watching tv in the day room nothing on as per ussaul you know I did have my phone back then too and hardly ever watched TV when I did alot of it was Steven universe and any one else who watches that can tell you that hiatused are a Bitch so basically steven universe was hiatuse and there nothing on and I found my self watchin TMNT alot but ya got know there nothing on there's nothing on but one day there was...
Now one thing you have to understand about me is I absolutely love my music all music any music any at and I'm not that picky
#octaviamelody
#vinylrecordscratch
I don't really have that many thing I won't listen to most of the time I only have one rule and that is that I won't listen to anything where I can't understand the lyrics I feel like what the point in music if you can't apeel to everyone and if one person can not what your saying that's one person you did not reach but the point of the matter is that I like and appreciate a lot of music what I'm realling to say is that the music is a big part of why I loved in Steven universe so much like comet, giant woman, it's over isnt it and I will straight up right now say that show deserves ten Grammy's (not to mention the Annie award, animation award, it deserved deserved deserved for best episode paraphrasing the name of the award Mr. Greg instead of that dumb ass adventure time vr episode) but I'm getting off toppic now I like music and what is my Little pony without alot of music
So I'm pretty sure no I'm beautifuly one hunldred percent sure on who I have to thank for saving me from when I was down in my funk the it was none other than the cuti mark crsaders let me explain it is definitely not the first song iv heard in the series but damn shur if it's not one the best I was watching mlp one day and ya know I thought here go just another friendship song ... Fuckin ass then out of no where I was blown away the kiss makeup , the lights, the crashes, the danger, and rock be e de de e dew
All I have to say right now is I don't know where I'd be if it weren't for you the cmc
#imnotzecora
so from the bottom of my heart for as broken and shattered it gets every day thank you
You help me so much
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now let talk about something really serious do you believe in simplicity that things just simply happen an that they are all coincidences maybe you believe in faith it can come from strangest places in apparently very ummm... If you believe in faith how far does that faith go how long are you willing to let the Signs just pass you by ignore faith some people get second chances but some never even get a first and if you do nothing if it something ....or someone that is a greater power or forces .... why not at least play along Just to see where you end up
Ok im a guy so naturally I do what guys do I watch porn and please just stay with me for one minute here because this is probably the most important part this is where I the divine intervention made it's first move it a very crucial part to this story so please just stay with me who know here what the rule 34 is ... Oh come on...
#sweetibellohcomeon
Shut you all know it is everyone knows the rule is it's states if exist it can be sexy and there porn of it
so me being the very lonely guy that I was never had being been in a relationship and alwase watching porn I knew for a fact that they did not show porn on YouTube so showering pornsites for pony porn and finding none (or not look hard enough not find what I wanted or worse just being internet lazy) went YouTube and they had ..... Somethig
Clop
Right now I challenge you to go to someone who is not a mlp fan and ask them to watch clop then ask a brony the exact question and compare just their face reactions yeah I had no idea what it was I did after though
So I got my fill of clop now at that time I was also a big anime fan this is the second event that seems to line up just perfectly to be some kind weird divine intervention I was watching frieza react to the video where pinkie pie beats up all her friends to the theme of the smile song and I'll give you a thousand Guesses what video was in description
cupcakes
Now yeah it was a weird video but I did even here it was a fanfic till way later the next couple of web searches we're mostly fan made songs untill ...
My first fan fiction by scribbler of course
