Pearl of the Realm [2, 1.5, 1]
Lucerys returns from his travels with new confidence and clothing that shocks nobility and the commonwealth. Fashionable members of the court swamp their tailors with demands, and the constant buzz around Lucerys the Lovely makes him Prince of the People. Coincidentally, Aemond develops chronic nosebleeds that plague him whenever his nephew is in the room.

The corset above is based off of a gold and white pearl set. This evolved into an AU about Luke gaining a sense of self + allies for Rhaenyra through scandalous clothing. He also incapacitates his Uncle Aemond, who probably has an iron deficiency from all the nosebleeds the maesters can’t explain.

A memorable incident: After offending Lucerys by insinuating his clothing is “inappropriate for a Prince”, and “looks like it was stolen from a Dornish whore”, Aemond attempts to apologize with a string of pearls. His timing is, of course, awful, and he stumbles into his chambers right when Lucerys is bathing. Misunderstandings ensue when he tries to shove the gift at him but ends up flinging it across the room; Luke assumes it’s an elaborate assassination attempt and leaps out of the bath, sprinting down the halls of the Red Keep with Aemond in hot pursuit. Aegon laughs so hard he cries.

My thoughts on drawing wings (an unofficial tutorial)
Do you want to get better at drawing your favorite winged character? Do you have winged OCs? Just want to learn something new? I can't promise this post will help, but maybe it'll give you some helpful tips.
I know, I knowww, wing tutorials have been done to death. I don't care. This was initially inspired by a conversation on twitter, but actually I've wanted to write down my notes on the topic for a long time lol. Basically wings are one of my special interests so it's very important, for me, to draw them both nicely and also realistically.
On that note, let me first show you my resume *distant sound of floodgates opening*

Like what you see? Read on! (Oh, and I will only be covering feathered/avian wings bc those are the type I know best.)
Now, I'm not here to give you a step-by-step guide on wing anatomy and aerodynamics, because there are plenty of other resources that cover this already, and I'll list my faves at the end of the post. Right now, I'm going to give you some easy guidelines and tricks that I wish more artists knew.
1: Wings do, in fact, have bones (crazy, I know) and are actually very rigid because they have to support the weight of a living creature. There are some positions you cannot physically force a wing into irl.

2: Flight feathers are not placed willy-nilly on the wing, because then they wouldn't catch the air properly. Again, like the bones, they are rigid and strong, so don't draw them like fur or ribbons. All wings have the same pattern of feather placement, with slight variation depending on species. If you learn the feather sections, it will automatically improve your drawings a lot.

2.5: Feathers overlap each other like a handful of playing cards, and this looks different depending on which side of the wing you're drawing. They always do this unless they're extremely untidy.

3: The size of the wingspan is important if you're going for a more realistic design. There is no "scientifically accurate" measurement when it comes to fictional creatures, but my general rule is when in doubt, you probably need to make them bigger. Personally, for my original winged human species, I give them wings that can be up to 12 feet long each (the artistic sacrifice is that it's really hard to fit the wings on the dang page lmao, so make your own call).

4: Get used to drawing folded wings. Most of the time, birds keep their wings folded because it prevents them from getting damaged and it conserves energy. The trick is to get good at visualizing how the joints bend and overlap (look at plenty of photos!) In general, they can fold much tighter than you think.

5: Wings and feathers take a lot of patience to draw, but the results are worth it. I've seen so so many incredibly beautiful and skillful artworks that are---well, maybe not ruined, but still negatively affected by a pair of wings that look like an afterthought, or not even like wings at all. You have no idea how much a little extra time and practice will add to your work until you see for yourself.

Finally, some notes on "stylized" wings: Of course it's perfectly ok to draw more simplified/cartoony wings if that's your preference!! BUT there is a difference between a stylistic choice and a lack of effort/poor understanding of the subject matter. Even cartoonists have to learn the fundamentals of realism so they know how to make their designs logical and appealing. Here are some examples of more stylized wings that I feel retain the core principles of anatomy/aesthetics:

I made this pinterest board for general artsy inspo, and this board to curate my very favorite tutorials/refs/information, focusing on the scientific aspect of wings and flight in general. Feel free to use both! (I also suggest pinterest in general for pose refs and such, but try to only practice using photos at first and not other drawings.)
I highly recommend this blog and this blog if you want examples of artists who draw more realism-based winged creatures!! They are both huge inspirations for me and I think you should totally follow them even if you don't plan to draw wings lol <3
If you're REALLY serious about it, my favorite ref books are: Winged Fantasy, a lovely drawing book by Brenda Lyons; Proctor & Lynch's Manual of Ornithology; and Angelus vincens by R. Spano, which is essentially an artbook by someone who (I believe) designed biologically plausible "angels" for their senior thesis.

Why “intersex” is an outdated, misnomer term? Why TRAs need to stop using DSD conditions as argument against the fact that sex is binary? Why gender ideology is doing huge damage to people with DSDs, especially to women with these conditions?
As a woman with DSD, I want to speak on behalf of myself and other people with DSDs. We have been weaponized by TRAs, used by them to deny biological facts. I will talk about why “intersex” is not appropriate term, about my condition and other DSD conditions in general, about how TRAs exploit us and more. I also want to educate and help other people with DSDs. English isn’t my first language, so I apologize if something doesn’t make sense.
“Intersex” is an outdated, misnomer term.
Term “intersexuality” was coined by Richard Goldschmidt in 1917 and was used as replacement of “hermaphrodite” since 1950s. “Inter” is a Latin word meaning “among, between”. That’s one of the biggest issues with term “intersex” - this term literally means “in between sex”.
DSD and VSD are better, less offensive terms that are used in medicine.
Term “intersex” has been seen as offensive by patients and their families, doctors were concerned that this term is confusing and misnomer, as it implies that patients with such conditions are “between sexes” or “third sex”. In 2006 a group of endocrinologists at the Chicago consensus created category called DSD - Disorders of Sex Development. DSD list contains all reproductive development conditions, including ones that aren’t treated by endocrinologists, such as the whole suite of uterine malformations and birth defects. Not all DSDs count as “intersex” conditions, as DSD is a more inclusive term. DSD can also mean Differences of Sex Development, and some other people use Variations of Sex Development (VDS). DSD and VSD are better terms, are used in medicine unlike “intersex”, are straightforward, less confusing, not offensive to many patients and inclusive.
Sex is binary, there are only two biological sexes in humans - female and male.
“What about intersex people?” is an extremely common phrase amongst TRAs whenever someone mentions the fact that there are only two sexes. DSD conditions extremely depend on biological sex. For the first example I will talk about myself - I have Clitoromegaly which means I’m biologically female, because only females can have Clitoromegaly. Other example is Turner’s Syndrome - only biological females can have this condition. Third example is Klinefelter Syndrome - only biological males can have this condition. While reading about Clitoromegaly or Turner’s Syndrome you will see that those who have these DSDs are referred as females, girls, women. Same goes to Klinefelter Syndrome, you will see term males, boys, men being used. While reading about any DSD condition, there’s extremely high chance that language will focus on biological sex of those who are affected by that condition.
“Intersex” can’t be a “third sex”.
Let’s start with the fact that DSDs vary a lot. If “intersex” is “third sex”, then it would mean that all “intersex” conditions are the same, right? To be more precise, would that mean that every “intersex” person is born with ambiguous genitalia? Like I explained before, DSDs extremely depend on biological sex of the one who is affected. If “intersex” really could be considered as a separate sex, then it would mean that “intersex” people would either produce both eggs and sperm, or they would make a different gamete. Which is impossible is humans.
The other big issue of “intersex” is that this term is used by TRAs to spread misinformation, such as saying that “sex is a spectrum”. “Intersex” is used to silence us who have DSDs and are against the gender ideology.
When you search “intersex” on TikTok, first videos will you see are women with conditions such as Swyer Syndrome saying that “they are biologically male”. When you search “intersex” on Pinterest, you see pictures where it’s shown that “sex is a spectrum”. “Intersex” is a term used by TRAs to validate their agenda. Say that women can’t have penises, there comes TRA saying “What about intersex women with penises?”. We don’t have penises, we have an enlarged clitoris. I find it extremely offensive that us who have Clitoromegaly, are seen as “women with penises”. Stop grouping us with trans women who are males with a fetish. Women with DSDs are female, trans women are male.
Stop grouping us who have DSDs with transgender people. TRAs don’t actually care about people with DSDs and their families.
Like I mentioned before, why TRAs think that me having Clitoromegaly is comparable to trans women who have penises? I want to mention, there’s a high chance that Clitoromegaly isn’t actually a full diagnosis of what I have, as I suffer from a lot of health issues such as problems with kidneys, thyroid and many more - my doctors suspect that my current diagnosis is actually not complete yet, as there’s high possibility of me having a more complex DSD which one of the symptoms is Clitoromegaly. Not only, in my country it takes a lot of time and it’s extremely hard to get diagnosed with anything + it’s extremely expensive. I mention my situation to show how TRAs don’t care about those with DSDs, they only want to use us for their harmful ideology. They don’t care about our pain, our struggles, about how our already diagnosed conditions are suspected to be actually a symptom of a more complex, serious condition. They don’t care about how much it gives us and our families stress. But they are extremely quick to accuse us of faking our DSDs if we don’t support the gender ideology.
People with DSDs taking hormones is not same as transgender people who also do this. Apparently, many transgender people have been faking DSDs to get hormones.
Us who have DSDs take hormones because we need to. Transgender people take hormones because they want to. Being transgender is a choice, having DSD is not. Many transgender people even have been faking DSDs to get hormones. Stop using our health issues to get something you shouldn’t take.
STOP COMPARING WOMEN WITH DSD TO TRANS WOMEN.
I don’t know how many times I have to repeat this, but stop comparing us to trans women. Me and other women who have Clitoromegaly don’t have a penis, we have an enlarged clitoris, not a penis. Stop mentioning us when someone says that women don’t have penises. It’s extremely offensive how TRAs think that an enlarged clit is a penis. The second extremely common “gotcha” that TRAs use are women with DSDs that make them not menstruate. Females who don’t menstruate are still female, stop comparing them to biological males. These women have been expressing extreme discomfort with being grouped with trans identified males, yet TRAs won’t listen. If you think that women who don’t menstruate are same as males who “identify” as women, then you are the problem. Stop using women’s health issues to validate your harmful gender ideology.
DSDs are not something you “identify” with. Stop using our conditions for your fetishes.
The third biggest problem with term “intersex” is that TRAs use it to “identify as intersex”. DSDs are not something you “identify” with. And it’s suspicious how most TRAs absolutely never say what condition they have exactly, or what are their symptoms - absolutely nothing about their DSD. Not only, many TRAs obviously lie about having DSD by saying false information about condition that they claim they have. Not enough, transgender people, mostly trans women, are using DSDs for their fetishes, such as saying that “their penises are long clitorises”.
TRAs don’t see women with DSDs as female, they see us as anything but female. That’s why they encourage us to identify as “transfem”.
I’m writing about this to make other women with DSDs aware about how TRAs view us - we aren’t “female enough” in their eyes. That’s also the reason why for such long time I thought that “intersex” is an appropriate term, until I recently saw other people with DSDs and got educated about this. “Transfem”, full name “Transfeminine” is normally associated with biological males - how biological females could identify with it? Because TRAs weaponize DSDs, making us women with these conditions believe that we aren’t “female enough”. I heard from TRAs that Clitoromegaly is an “intersex” condition, which means I’m not a biological woman, so I can identify as “transfem”. While I identified as “transfem” I felt way worser than before. Before I was told by TRAs that my Clitoromegaly is an “intersex” condition, I didn’t feel bad nor insecure due to having Clitoromegaly. Because “being intersex” literally means “being between sexes”, “being third sex” and “not being female/male enough”. TRAs take advantage of people with DSDs, especially ones whose English isn’t first language, to make us believe that we are “intersex” - that we are “third sex”.
If you don’t have a DSD, or at least aren’t suspected to have one, then please listen to us. We are being exploited by TRAs, silenced every time we speak about it. If you say things like “What about intersex people?” while someone says that there are two biological sexes - please stop. All humans are either female or male, sex is not a spectrum. You hurt us by saying that we “aren’t female enough” or “aren’t male enough”. You give us insecurities by claiming that we “are between sexes”. Women with DSDs want to be seen as female, men with DSDs want to be seen as male, we aren’t “third sex”!
To other people with DSDs - I hope you’re doing well, stay safe and don’t be afraid to call out people who harm us. Especially the ones who were brainwashed by TRAs, as I myself was the victim of the gender ideology - we should speak out about how TRAs exploit us, so no more people with DSDs become victims. Remember, you are heard 💕

Hellooo :D!! I just wanted to ask if you have any tips for coming up with ideas for full pieces. It could totally just be “oh this seems cool/cute” and then just testing compositions/colours/etc on the spot (and I’d be happy with tips about that too), but I was curious if there’s any brainstorming you do when/if ideas don’t just pop up in your head (or you do have a very loose idea, but need a bit more planning before actually starting the piece)
Also I obviously need to mention that I ADORE your art!! Your most recent piece with angel Crowley had me in AWE (I’m pretty sure my jaw actually dropped).

It's a mix of both "oh my god I have this great idea I gotta draw it NOW" and "let's scroll through pinterest for 2 hours and hope that something inspires me".
For example this piece under the rain was an idea I had while taking a nap. I didn't have any proper references for it and just put a bunch of puzzle pieces together and hoped for the best, haha.

I usually have this one specific idea that I wanna turn into an illustration and then I spend hours searching for references that make the process a little easier. This was my reference sheet for it:

Most of the time I just go through my Pinterest poses board and see if there's something I'd like to draw, though. I save a lot of poses I like constantly that I can go back to later on. This was the case with the angels illustration I did!

I didn't have anything super specific planned for it when I started working on it. I actually planned for it to just be some small and quick little drawing. It somehow turned into the best thing I've ever made djhdhd

With most of my work I don't really do a lot of planning. I do that enough in my school assignment already, so I tend to just draw loosely when it comes to personal work, haha.
So the tip I'd give you is to get as many references as you possibly can! It makes your life so much easier. Also look for color palettes you enjoy, see how other artists use colors! And be willing to just experiment. Most of my art is just one experiment after another in hopes that one day I know what I'm doing.

probably a lame answer but honestly lots of practice! i only use pinterest or people watch irl even though i really should look into more resources (lazy) but i try to use references as much as i can when i draw. typically i just scroll pinterest and go "oh! this pose would look good on this character" and then trick myself into doing a study with fanart.

i'm self taught and these tips might not apply to everyone or be 100% correct but my advice for drawing good poses would be to
1. focus on the overall form first instead of drawing the body part by part. you can always tweak those later, but capturing the overall shape of the pose will help a lot later on and train your eyes to be able to spot these things.
2. make sure the silhouette is clear and concise. it should be obvious what the pose is even when it's silhouettes. even for passive poses it helps to exaggerate a little so that the visual language of it is more clear.
3. think of the body in 3d. i mean everyone and their mama knows that the body can be broken down into boxes and cylinders so i'm not gonna go into that but it helps to consider the curvature of everything when you draw (also helps with understanding how clothes would wrap around the characters body)
also! remember that you can always just study or preview poses with yourself in the mirror! you can make your own references!

Here's some of the MOST BASIC resources I use to reference fat models!
❥ Pinterest (I generally just search 'plus size model' or 'plus fashion') ❥ Tumblr (Again, search term plus size model) ❥ @fugitiverabbit's amazing http://fatphotoref.com
If I cannot find a pose with a fat model already, I use straight size/skinny ref. I've learned a lot from not only my own body but also the book "Morpho: Fat and Skin Folds: Anatomy for Artists" so I can turn any skinny ref into a plus size ref for myself.
And here's examples of what I come across on pinterest. These are all great starting points for poses! All you need is practise to slim and fatten as necessary to fit whatever picture you have in your head. ♡

I will not share these photos here but sometimes I will sit for my own reference. I am what I draw!! So I am my best frame point when it comes to having a live model to observe. :D Get friends to pose for you! Or sometimes, you can hire a model.

making graphics is therapeutic to me and i take a lot of pride and joy in doing it, from seeing everyone loving the things i create. and i want to share that pride and joy even more, sooo if you've ever struggled with making a good theme, feel too lazy to make one, need a banner for a fic or masterlist, a header, or just need someone to help your graphic vision come together; i'm here to provide!

text. (what do you want included on it, words, titles, information, quotes, etc)
examples. (like i mentioned in the rules examples are encouraged but do not take them from other creators on here and i will not copy, or make them look like someone else's work)
what kind of header do you want? (a simple png that goes along with the navi colors and vibe, a whole other banner-esk graphic, none, etc)

-How long does it take you to make renders? Many hours. I am self-taught, I did not graduate from any special school in this field, so I often devote a lot of time to learning, so please respect that. But to answer your question, it depends on the project - sometimes 4 hours, sometimes a week.

Pairing: Lance Stroll x Fem!Reader
Summary: Asking the driver of the team you work for to attend a wedding with you as your fake date is possibly one of the dumbest ideas you've had ever.. but also one of the best.
Warnings: exes ugh, lots of fluff, lotta kissing, some angst but more towards the end, cliffhanger cause ik y'all hate me already :D brief mentions of alcohol, please tell me if I have missed anything!!

"Well played," Thomas slid past you with a remark as you stood amongst a group of relatives who were mostly conversing between themselves.
You turned your head to acknowledge him, obviously knowing he was referring to the kiss he'd seen you and Lance share earlier.
As the memory resurfaced, you couldn't help but suppress a smile while recalling it.
Subconsciously, your finger gravitated towards your lips, etching into your mind the unforgettable sensation of his lips melding seamlessly with yours, akin to the completion of a long-lost puzzle.
Maybe you began to daydream a little, staring at the hardwood floor when your aunt shook your shoulder. "I called you twice, had too much to drink?" She asked, though smiling through the question.
"Sorry Aunt Mel, what did you need?" She waved you off, "nothing. Your boyfriend's looking for you, dear."
"My boy… oh my boyfriend. Um, where is he?" you stammered, your aunt studying your face with a hint of suspicion, as if contemplating the extent of your alcohol consumption tonight.
"Last I saw him, he was by the chocolate fountain. You need me to go with you?" You shook your head despite the fact it wasn't very convincing, handing her your empty wine glass and wandering off.
Maybe you were rubbing your head or the nape of your neck when you spotted a familiar tall man with a tucked in shirt.
You reached for his arm but pulled away at the last second when you realised it was somebody else. "Sorry Unc-"
Before you allowed yourself to finish the sentence, you whisked around when you felt someone's presence right on your back. They steadied you with their hands on your arms, but a warm smile encompassed your lips when you realised who it was.
"018!" You exclaimed excitedly.
He scoffed, it was a running joke between his team that the 018 number would be used when Lance was either running late or wasn't anywhere to be found minutes before an important event, which had happened a few times too many.
When he eventually showed up, usually his team of mechanics which now had extended to any personnel who so happened to be present either by accident or not, would shout it out.
He never knew the backstory to it, just always played along, dishing out a few quick slaps on his engineers' arms before running off to fulfil his contractual obligations.
"Oh so now you know about that too?" He questioned, his hands sliding down your arms to meet your hands.
You tilted your head, reducing your otherwise beaming smile to an innocent one. You glance down at your intertwining hands before responding.
"Well, it's hard not to when the entire garage shouts it out for the whole paddock to hear." You explained.
"Is that so?" You nod curtly, biting back a laugh. He leaned forward and you decide to help him out, tip-toeing to meet his lips in the middle.
His right hand gently rests on your jawline. When you broke away, you rested both of your hands on his chest.
"Technically, we have a whole weekend to make up for. You know, for the sake of acting." He says, a subtle thrill in his voice like a whisper of excitement, one barely perceptible but undeniably present.
You hum agreeingly, tucking your bottom lip in between your two rows of teeth.
...
"Okay, that is so not what happened!" You burst into laughter as Daisy makes a genuine attempt to swat your cousin's head, playfully aiming to embarrass her with his exaggerated rendition of a story that your sister insists is nowhere near the truth.
"Why do we believe anything Dais says, you said you were giving up sugar three weeks ago and today the only thing I saw you cosying up to was the dessert stand."
Your dad nearly choked on his water just as everyone laughed again, recalling the heartfelt speech your sister gave about the perils of unhealthy eating.
While you obviously agreed with her message, the notion of practicing what you preach was never one of her exemplary mottos and this was one example of many.
"Okay, leave me alone! I held that up for a whole week and then I got my period so was it really my fault?" You smiled, shaking your head.
After some time, you decided to retreat from the living room as the various relatives who had gathered after the wedding started to head home.
With a sense of anticipation for your leave tomorrow evening, you bid them your goodbyes, realising that you wouldn't have another chance to see them before your departure.
You guess Lance was being your moral support with an occasional squeeze on the shoulder. The formality of goodbyes always stirred up emotions within you, especially when the uncertainty of the next meeting loomed large.
You made an internal vow to meet with them again over the summer, just as you had promised yourself in previous years. Yet, deep down, you couldn't ignore the fact that those plans often fell short of their intended course.
"You okay?" Lance asked, concern lacing his words. You gave a nod in response, avoiding his gaze and discreetly pressing your finger to the inner corner of your eye, collecting the tear that lingered, on the verge of spilling over.
After you bid goodnight to your parents, you and Lance finally retreated into your bedroom for the final time this weekend.
You flicked the light switch on as the F1 driver removed the tie hanging around his neck, having undone it the moment you left the venue anyway.
You picked at your false lashes, already feeling the weight on your eyes lighten a little when you simultaneously peeled them off and stuck them back on to their packaging.
Maybe half an hour had passed when you'd wrapped up your time in the bathroom, relieved to change out of your dress and remove the makeup that had adorned your face.
Despite not consuming much alcohol tonight, you had an inkling that tomorrow morning would greet you with a headache, or at the very least, some discomfort.
As you entered the room, you noticed Lance sitting on the air mattress, perceiving your hesitance upon seeing him there. He looked devilishly handsome even after a full night of dancing, drinking and socialising. You wanted to despise him for it, but how could you despise someone so perfect?
"What?" he inquired, breaking your momentary trance as you snapped back into reality and proceeded to hang your dress behind the door.
"Nothing," you replied, the sound of the door clicking shut marked your decision to face him. Though you attempted to dismiss the notion, Lance wasn't willing to let it go so easily.
With a faint but lopsided smile, he spoke up, "You gave me a look." You rolled your eyes, briefly glancing at the time displayed on your phone before reaching down to plug it into the charging cable.
“No. I didn’t.” You persisted.
"You tryna gaslight me right now?" You scoff, turning your head to see him beginning to stand up, you tried to ignore the rush of beats in your chest but it was his fault he had that stupid mischievous glint in his eyes.
"I'm not. I didn't give you a look. It's been a long day." You tore your eyes away from him.
"Has it?" You could sense he was moving closer but you didn’t dare look, trying to occupy yourself with the items scattered messily on your nightstand from the rush of leaving this morning.
“See, now you’re not looking at me.” You sigh unsteadily, finding his teasing intolerable for someone so attractive.
“Maybe I don’t want to look at you.” You turn your head in his general direction, emphasising your point but Lance only chuckled.
A momentary silence enveloped the room, and remnants of the wedding flooded your mind. You vividly recalled the instance when you found him near the chocolate fountain, guided by your Aunt Mel's directions.
Before, his chest only loomed behind you, but now you were certain that he was intentionally getting that much closer.
The palms of his hands feathered over your shoulders before pressing into them. His touch sent a surge of electricity through your entire being, awakening every nerve ending as if it were a cascade of fireworks illuminating the sky.
His voice barely above a whisper, emerged rather as a raspy murmur, "You don't want to look at me?"
“Maybe,” you reply, your head spinning as you attempt to make sense of his hands caressing your shoulders for any reason other than the one your heart was about to burst out of your chest for. Your fingers fiddled with the medication packet in an attempt to distract yourself.
“You sure?” You’re rendered speechless, his pelvis brushing against you. One of his hands remain atop of your shoulder, but you can feel every little tap, every little rub against your arm when he slides his other downwards.
It brushes against the fabric of your pajamas before finding its place, squeezing somewhere between the curve in your waist and your hip.
Perhaps you were being irrational or imagining a scenario beyond the realm of possibility, even in your wildest dreams. So when you start to turn towards him, Lance had already accepted your response.
Practically speeding up the process and turning you so you were facing him completely, he guides his other hand directly parallel to the other and uses the force he has over you physically, and the one you were allowing him from sheer vulnerability, to rotate your bodies.
You had your back turned towards the bed, feeling his hands firmly planted on either side of you, the intense contact driving you to the brink, yet you refused to lose yourself. You fought hard to remain grounded in the present moment, even when his head lowered to capture your lips in a kiss.
The cloud of uncertainty between you two dissipates, as if a wall had crumbled, giving way to an intense desire. Lance boldly encroaches on your personal space while you glide your hands up his chest and around his neck. With a firm press, his body collides with yours, causing both of you to stumble backward.
You find yourself collapsing onto the bed, and Lance positions himself on top of you, his body weight supported by his arm next to your head. With tenderness, you raise your hands to his face and gently cradle his cheeks in your palms, engaging him in a kiss.
The unraveling of his self-control is captivating as his hands glide over your neck, waist, and thigh with a benign caress. The kiss is fiery, possessing a rawness that contrasts with the smoothness of his lips.
As Lance's mouth leaves yours, planting softer kisses on your neck, a sharp pain shoots through your knee. You make an effort to conceal the burning sensation, but your body tenses involuntarily. His lips detach from your skin, his attention now focused on your discomfort.
“M’sorry.” You breathe out, frustrated and shut your eyes in annoyance.
"It's okay. Your knee?" Lance's concerned voice reaches your ears, and you give a single nod in response. The warmth of his body against yours lessens as he readjusts his position. Turning your head towards him, you can't help but wonder what's unfolding in his mind.
Lance exhales deeply as he pushes himself up and away from your body, running a hand through his hair. "Must've been from all that dancing," he remarks. You manage a weak chuckle, he was probably right.
You raise a hand to your forehead, realising you haven't experienced such feelings coursing through your body like this in years. The expectancy, nerves, and excitement intertwine, building up to a breaking point, like a taut spring ready to release its tension.. or snap in half.
Thoughts of self-doubt creep into your mind, wondering how pathetic and weak he might perceive you to be. As you withdraw your hand from your forehead, you notice him rising to his feet.
"Lance," you instinctively call out, though unsure of what you want to say next. Sitting up, you lock eyes with him, but a sudden pause overtakes you. Your lips part slightly, as if hoping it'll hasten your currently blank thought process.
“Yeah?” He prods you on further, but all that can leave your mouth is, “thank you.”
“For uh for this weekend. I guess you did really well.” He laughs, nodding his head.
As he makes his way around the bed to return to his air mattress, you reach up to the side of your neck where Lance left a particularly distinct kiss. Your fingers delicately graze over the tender patch of skin, feeling a lingering warmth.
Without another moment's notice, Lance switches off the light, plunging the room into darkness. A pang of sadness wells up in your chest, if only you had concealed your pain instead of openly admitting to it.
After a few minutes of silence, you lift yourself up to rest against your pillow, wincing slightly at the discomfort in your joint. Lifting the blanket, you slide beneath it, crossing your arms underneath the cover to try and warm yourself.
You search for something else to say, hesitant to fall asleep on these terms. The bed dips on the other side and you can't help but wonder what he might do next, or if he'll do anything at all. The uncertainty hangs in the air, intensifying the uneasiness inside of you.
For a brief moment, you feel a tinge of disappointment but it quickly fades when his hand slides under your top, traversing over your stomach, drawing him closer to you.
In a pleasant surprise, you turn your body to face him, and a smile spreads across your face when you catch the familiar glint in his eyes.
“You need to get it checked out,” he advises.
“I will,” you reply, sliding a touch closer to him.
Lance’s hand glides along the ridge in your hip, before moving to rest on your thigh. He presses his lips against the line where your scalp meets your forehead as you tuck your head in between the curve of his jaw and neck.
"Back home tomorrow," he whispers, and a bittersweet feeling settles in your stomach. It's ironic how, at the beginning, you wished for this weekend to be over, but now, almost 72 hours later, you find yourself yearning for the opposite.
His warmth comforts you the best it can, and you hum to assure him that you heard what he said. As the tiredness from the day weighs on you, sleep gradually takes over, and you find yourself succumbing to its embrace in the safety of his arms.
Your brows pull inwards when you awaken to the sound of a loud knock on your door. Lance isn't beside you, and you assume he must've already left to grab his morning coffee, considerately letting you sleep in.
"What?" you mumble, your words partially muffled by the pillow mushed into half of your face.
Your sister opens it, brushing her hair with one hand and the other waving you up. Like that was sufficient enough motivation to make you want to leave your bed.
“Dad's treating us all to this breakfast place ‘cause you’re leaving today so.. you’ve got 10 minutes to get ready.” You groan but have no option to argue when Daisy’s already gone by the time you blink both of your eyes open.
You feel like shit and you definitely look like shit when you force yourself to get up and out of bed, usually that takes you 10 minutes alone so you mentally applaud yourself for doing it so quickly.
You hurry downstairs once you’ve completed the tasks compiled from basic human hygiene, meeting only Lance in the kitchen, leaned against the counter with phone in hand.
“Where is everyone?” He looks up, rather obviously checks you out then meets your eyes with a bright smile.
Your chest warms, and maybe your face tints red a little, but you smile back at him. “They went ahead, said to meet them there.”
You hum, “I always wondered where I got my impatience from.” He chuckles as he slides past you, letting you pull your flats on before opening the door.
As soon as you catch sight of Tom across the way, a perplexed expression washes over you, causing a brief blink and a subtle parting of your lips.
“Y/N,” he looks past Lance and the F1 driver looks back at you puzzled, wondering if this was a planned meet-up. The bewilderment on your face answers the question for him.
“You need to go,” you say before the man in front of you gets a chance to.
“I just want to talk,” Tom says, watching you desperately. “Come on.”
As Lance takes a step closer to him, you swallow sceptically. You were aware that his tolerance for your ex had been dwindling throughout the entire weekend, but now wasn't the opportune moment to witness him reach his breaking point.
"What the hell do you want to talk about now?" you ask, your voice unsteady.
Tom again looks around him to meet your eyes, “five minutes of your time is too much?”
“I think it’s time for you to go,” Lance says warningly. You reach for his hand to tug him backwards which you succeed in, though not without a questionable look.
With a firm tone, you remind him, "you had your five minutes at the wedding." Despite your reminder, Tom takes a step closer, maintaining a cautious distance to avoid provoking the man fixed between the two of you.
Insisting fervently, he presses on, "you're going to want to hear this. I promise." The desperation in his eyes becomes apparent, and you hate that the urge to hear him suddenly overcomes you. Being your ex meant he was still masterfully able to draw you in somehow.
“Wait by the gate,” he nods at your instruction and you turn your body to meet Lance’s. “Just get the car started?”
"You've gotta be kidding. Why are you still bothering with him?" Lance probes, searching your face for an explanation. With a sigh, you mentally admit your inability to provide a good enough answer.
“I’m just going to hear what he has to say. It doesn’t mean anything.” You rationalise, your eyes growing soft and Lance can’t help but understand where you’re coming from.
Maybe granting him the chance to express whatever he wanted to say is a debt you feel obliged to fulfil.
“I’ll wait in the car,” you mutter a thank you in return, watching as he creaks the door open to walk through it.
He glares at Tom as he walks past, bordering on a push, and unlocks the car. He settles into the driver's seat and your ex waits for you where you told him to.
With a heavy sigh, you approach him, his face still adorned with a palpable sense of desperation that shows no signs of fading.
“What is it?”

What kind of things do you search when looking for pose references? I have so many face ones but all the poses I find are so boring
when it comes to google, i usually have a pretty solid idea in my head for a pose i’m looking for so my searches are always weirdly specific, like “man in a suit sitting on a big chair” or something equally stupid LMAO but basically it’s just a lot of scrolling and photobashing different photos
when it comes to pinterest, i usually go there when i either don’t have a specific idea for the pose or want to look for something idk more artistic? i’ve been collecting references there for so long my main page is pretty well curated at this point but i recommend looking at fashion photoshoots and movie stills! i recently discovered photos from ballet shows are surprisingly great for super dramatic scenes like LOOOK:

generally i frantically switch between doodling and scrolling my gallery / pinterest in a constant state of panic over wanting to introduce new interesting ideas but realizing i need to think with my own head and not look at other art...
i do have a couple separate pinterest boards for some specific things, like, all the cyberpunk and sci-fi things are in one place, all the armor refs and tutorials in other, animals in other, horses are separate from the rest of the animals bc there's too many of them, real life clothing and fashion in other, etc. yknow for cases where i 100% need lots of references and inspiration. plus i search up additional refs when i know what im looking for / already have an idea for a design and just need it to be accurate.
but most of the time it's just my gallery. i save a lot of art that i like, and when i need ideas but i don't really know what exactly i want to see, i scroll through this massive pile of all sorts of different things until something catches my eye. can never tell where inspiration might come from, so i find that having it all in one place is better than having lots of small organized folders that i need to individually look through.
hmm i feel like im not answering your question at all......... i used to always have clear references and things i deliberately and consciously took inspiration from, and i did research into themes and what could potentially enhance a design. if you look at my older art, design sheets especially, you can see that a lot of them have references in the background, and are more thought through and planned. i've stopped doing it at some point tho. not sure why, probably just got lazy. although i think around that time i was also coming to terms with the idea that i don't need to have a set design that i follow 100% correctly every time, and that instead i can have fun and draw characters however i like and let a design form over time. so that probably had an effect.
nowadays most of the ideas for designs come from my mind and visual memory, plus inspirations from the gallery, though it is less deliberate and more of a "oh wow that's cool". that's also where the frantic switching and panic come in. which makes it a lot harder to track down or to explain...

BARRAYARAN COSTUME DESIGN

The process for costume design:
Had fun looking through a whole bunch of reference images to try to create a costume set that reflected the strong sense of tradition with midieval-esque holdovers from hand textiles that would have had to be the norm during barreyars period of isolation, while also accounting for the wealth of the current barreyaran aristocracy and their access to modern galactic trends and clothing. I also didn’t want the midieval influences to be generic-fantasy-vaguely-european-bulshit, so I also tried to find reference images with styles, patterns, and silhouettes that where somewhat reminiscent of the French, Russian, and Greek cultural heritage barnyard first settlers may have brought with them. That being said, it wouldn’t make sense for any of these traditional garments to have been preserved with 1-for-1 accuracy from there earth origins over the many centuries (cuz like, irl traditional dress in these countries is less and less common) so I didnt want to just copy exactly historical garments.
OH! And then I also had to make sure the men’s clothing also reflected the pseudo-military affectations which Bujold has mentioned in multiple books as being popular in menswear amongst the vor cast. (Ex: the formal riding boots, and the two swords carried at formal events, or less formally vor “town clowns” also wearing casual clothing reminiscent of a military cut.) but! In order to do this, I had to think of both what would have been military uniforms both in isolation-barrayar and modern barrayar, and which aspects of each set of military uniforms would be incorporated into modern men’s fashion. Would any women’s clothing also reflect this warrior trend?
Finally, since all of this costume design was brainstorming for the dinner party scene, I wanted to make sure that the clothes matched the personalities of the people wearing them. Like aunt Alice and Professors Vorthis are both middle aged Vor-caste women, but will have vastly contrasting style. Alice being alice, her clothing will likely be both perfect for the occasion while also a sleek and elegant combination of the leading barreyaran fashions, while also giving a nod to traditional barreyaran costume at times as she is a representative of both the state and her old-vor house. The professora on the other hand, will probably opt for something comfortable and cozy, while not especially showy, as she is more concerned with her studies and gardens and is not super involved in the Vorbarra-sultana social scene.

Idk the names of a lot of them cuz I’m not really active on social media and only really see the images amidst thousands of others in my Pinterest hoard but I always recognize the artsyles and creativity and wind up saving them to reference art boards 🙈

Okay so in this AU them and Rimbaud r both 19!!!
Verlaine's wish was to bring Chuuya back after he went missing; Chuuya disappeared at 5 and was gone for two years before Kyuubey showed up.
In this Chuuya's 14 and came back @ 7 so Verlaine would've made their contract at 12!!! (They've been a magical girl 4 a hot minute)
They still keep a lot of the whole "I'm not human" edginess but this time it's over being a magical girl (bro did NOT react well to finding out abt the soul gem thing). Them nd Rimbaud have a bit of a better relationship than canon cuz Rimbaud's also a magical girl so Verlaine actually feels understood in this universe.
Story-wise they both were doin pretty good until an amount of circumstances led to them having to kill Walpurgisnacht on their own. While they did succeed, they both had completely used up all their magic and were gonna become witches </3
Rimbaud pulls a Madoka and sacrifices himself with their only grief seed :( Verlaine's forced to kill Rimbaud (or the witch that used 2 be Rimbaud el oh el) and it fucks him up a little :3
Verlaine's super devastated cuz bro lost the only person who understood them and they essentially gave up on living; so they decide to just start killing witches (and quite a few magical girls!!!!). It doesn't take long for them to transform into their own witch and get killed (probably by Chuuya nd Dazai) </3
OK DESIGN DETAILS!!!
Their weapon is a sniper rifle, it's magical so they can summon it but only one at a time so not like Mami's many revolvers!! It can shoot lil mini black holes and it's pretty fancy :3

I wanted to reference what's described in Stormbringer so the "tail" nd "head" are inspired by that tomfoolery!! It's also supposed to mimic a dragon with butterfly wings instead of normal wings (idk why i drew butterfly wings they're just fun ig) and it also has horns :3
The lil halo thing in the back's supposed to look divine in a way????? also it just looks cool

'tis i, the purveyor of fem!kinnporsche lookbooks, this time bearing kimchay. if you missed the kinnporsche one it's here. if you didn't, you know the drill, thoughts and refs beneath the cut.
okay let's start with kim:
i'm gonna be real with you folks: i struggled hard with fem!kim. in my head, kim much like fem!kinn is someone who uses her clothes to send messages, but where kinn is trying to communicate power and authority, kim is instead using her clothes to adopt different personas or elements of her personality. and so, i can see fem!kim wearing nearly everything, basically.

so, return customers may notice something odd about kim: i gave her different poses for each of her personas. why? i think kim is someone who embodies a lot of different personas, and i think the change is more than skin deep.
this was very much the first set i drew. the brief for these outfits in my head was something like "k-pop kim possible". also a lot of these were drawn when i still had covid lmao so i barely remember most of it.
it was very important to me that kim had a wolf cut. that fact came to me the moment i started thinking about fem!kim. so. you know. you're welcome.
runing errands (first outfit) - this one was the first outfit i drew for kim, and it was mostly summoned up from my own head. i spent a lot of time scrolling through pinterest before i started drawing. in my head, this is sort of what she wears when she's out and about as wik but not like, performing or whatever. still a very crafted image, but a little more casual than her performance gear.
performance (second outfit) - this one does have a ref! i found this image on pinterest and was like yes. this one. i thought long and hard about what i wanted wik's fashion and persona to be, because i debated going along the family friendly singer-songstress route, but in the end i figured she had to be cool and a little edgy. hence [gestures at the clothes].
award show/red carpet (third outfit) - this one's kind of fun. longtime listeners will recall that i started drawing these lookbooks bc @mortimerlatrice told me they didn't think fem!kinn would wear dresses and i had to disprove them -- so i thought it'd be fun if for kim, she only wore dresses when on mafia business. kim in a dress is a blaring warning signal that you're gonna get your shit rocked. so, kim's award show look is a pantsuit. she doesn't wear dresses at all as wik. there was definitely a reference image for this one, but i drew the entirety of this first set when i had covid, so i don't think i saved it OTL
detective wikachu aka mafia kim
another fun detail you might notice about mafia!kim -- she's always got her hair up. that was also deliberate. also holy shit this set killed me so bad. we'll get there.
running errands (detective errands) (first outfit) - this is what kim wears when she's gotta blackmail randos for info. fairly casual, all things told, but very different in vibe to her wik stuf. also the pattern on that suit is incredibly simple but it took me 45 mins to create bc i still had covid brainfog at this point. the reference for this look was celine's spring/summer 2021 rtw collection look 24.
visiting dad (to snoop) (second outfit) - another source of debate for me. what, exactly, does kim send as a message to her father when she comes back home? i played with the idea of her wearing a sort of perfectly pretty mafia princess disguise, but i don't think that's what she'd use to get on her father's good side. so, she's wearing a dress (fuck your shit up vibes for her) but it's got a strong vibe to it. so, i had to go with alexander mcqueen, which is one of my favourite designers. this one is specifically alexander mcqueen pre-fall 2022 look 17.
at a gala (mafia-flavoured) also to snoop (third outfit) - oh my god you guys will not believe how many of these i went through. i even fully drew another option before discarding it completely. (originally, i was going to go with erdem pre-fall 2023 look 8 which i drafted here but i just didn't vibe with it the more i worked on it. i guess it felt a little too princessy? so i pivoted.) this one is from another of those designers i actually really like, zuhair murad. this one's from fall 2022 couture, specifically look 38. very much love at first sight. the moment i saw it, i knew i was gonna draw it. and oh boy did drawing it make me suffer. that bead pattern on the dress? killed me. actually killed me. fucking OW. worth it though.
family portrait (fourth outfit) - after all the suffering of kim's formal look this one was comparatively a breeze. found a pic on pinterest, and whoosh i went drawing. the reference is here.
chay!kim
this set is very much what it says on the tin, the clothes kim wears around chay. let's go.
guitar tutoring (first outfit) - okay so in my head the brief for this one was "what kim thinks chay thinks wik wears on her downtime", which very much sets the tone for the entire outfit. i just think it's fun if kim twists herself out of sorts with how clever she is and then chay just bulldozes straight through that. i don't actually have a reference for this one. just drew it.
rescue chay (second outfit) - this is what kim wears to go save chay from the tawan kidnapping. i dubbed this one "when you got library study session at 9, rescue bae at 12, and cyberpunk revolution at 3". the loose inspo for this one was this dress on pinterest which i tracked to the brand ganni and then found they no longer made.
say no to drugs, chay (third outfit) - okay so i wanted this outfit to be like. a wake up call to chay. the first time chay sees kim in a skirt, and the first time chay realises that maybe kim is a little dangerous. it's alexander mcqueen (ofc it is) and actually in the time between me drawing this and posting it, someone actually wore the skirt from this look on the red carpet. it's the spring 2023 rtw collection, look 24. salma hayek wore the skirt to the 2023 brits here.
the youtuber apology video fit (fourth outfit) - the brief here was "kim forcibly bolting on hinges". the idea was to kind of soften her mafia edges but leave the cornerstones of how she dresses for that very much there. so, dress, hair up, but much more relaxed. this outfit is from tommy hilfiger's spring 2023 rtw collection, specifically look 17.
onto chay:
chay was really hard to start with, i'm going to be real. i think the sum total for my notes when i started was just one word: dungarees? as i drew more of her i started to think of her as someone who thrifts and then alters a lot of her clothes. i wanted colour and patterns, and i suffered for them. by god did i suffer.
a few lil headcanons i have about her:
i think chay probably finds it easy to be considered cute and hard to move out of that box. i think there's a part of chay that wants to be sexy the way porsche is (ESPECIALLY if this is a fem!porsche universe) but doesn't know how to go about trying to achieve that. she had to ask yok how to teach her how to apply eyeliner bc porsche doesn't know how to and doesn't care to learn.
i think the role of like, female role model/influence in chay's life is later taken up by fem!kinn, who is full of the kind of advice porsche would be horrified to hear given to her precious baby sister.
chay has short hair because when she had long hair porsche was obsessed with getting her the right shampoos and conditioners and stuff to take care of it (probs based on some internalised stuff from when porsche was at school and girls would mock her for her split ends) so chay just puts a stop to that by cutting all her hair off and it turns out she kind of likes it? so she keeps it.
casual outfits
i drew all these patterns myself. from scratch. you're welcome.
green dungarees (first outfit) - the reference image is here. this was the first look i drew and also the moment i realised how stupid i was to choose a "fun" foot pose for chay. this caused no end of suffering going forward.
orange dungarees (second outfit) - ref here. here i started to regret the pattern aspect of my chay design. also those messy canvas ankle boots killed me to draw. they were so hard.
sweater vest (third outfit) = MORE FUCKING PATTERNS. i also had a reference for this one somwhere but i was drawing this whilst playing dnd so i think it just got lost.
special outfits
school uniform (first outfit) - i did a bit of looking into school uniforms in thailand and from what i can tell they basically all look very similar. idk if the lilac shirt + navy skirt combo is standardised for girls but it was pretty much all i found when i went looking. also she has a long skirt because when she and porsche bought it for her, they bought a really big one that she could wear all through school.
one (1) smart dress (second outfit) - the idea here is that this is the one smart item of clothing that chay has, and it's the one-size-fits-all-occasions dress. it's dark so it can be worn to funerals. it's somewhere between business and formal so it can be worn to both those kinds of occasions. it was based on this dress i found on pinterest.
going to a concert with friends (third outfit) - i... just wanted to put chay in a bucket hat? yeah that's all i have. no ref. just my mind.
porsche's first paycheque present (fourth outfit) - the idea here was that after getting some money from the whole mafia thing, porsche buys this as a present for chay. maybe it's a dress chay's always looked at when they walk past it in a shop window? this is a slight tweak on this dress by alaia. the original's like £2k which i cannot picture porsche and chay spending on a dress but shhh it's fine.
post-kim
these are the outfits from after the whole kim debacle goes down. i just really wanted to draw goth chay. and really, who wouldn't?
break-up era #1 (first outfit) - at this point i was just having way too much fun. the pattern took for-fucking-ever on the skirt though, because i thought i'd just cheekily re-use the dungaree flower pattern with colour changes but oh no that didn't work at all. i had to edit it so much. the reference is here. here her hair is freshly dyed blue, and she's given herself a little heartbreak undercut. you go girl.
say no to drugs chay (second outfit) - this is what chay is wearing when kim points at that rando in the club who offers chay drugs. you see all of the goth reference images i was finding were just too clean-cut and employable, you know? so torn fishnets it was. the refence i found for this is here but i changed it up bc i couldn't see chay wearing a little nightdress to go clubbing no matter how heartbroken she was.
visiting mum (third outfit) - in this one, in my head, chay has dyed her hair back to normal, but she's still got the undercut, so she straightens her hair and pins a little of it over the short bit to try and appear a little more normal chay to her mum. very simple outfit, no refs.
family portrait (fourth outfit) - there's a part of me which delights in this implied scenario because i just think it's funny if chay and kim are posing for a family portrait with kinnporsche and chay's ready to ignore the fuck out of kim and pretend like she doesn't care about her staring but then kim is in full-hide-any-weakenesses mode because korn's there so now chay's the one staring. relationship status: it's very awkward. anyway fashion wise i wanted two things from chay's outfit: for it to be simpler than any of the theerapanyakuls' and for it to be in a lighter shade of porsche's colour (blue). the reference was this cool dress i found on pinterest.

wahh thank you so much...!! i feel like im still trying to figure them out in a lot of ways but i do really like ironing out my visual interpretations of them so im really happy to hear if people like what im coming up with
also anon you super activated the part of my brain that cant help but yap about art theory... i spent some time writing as many tips as i could think of. unfortunately i dont think i have the time currently to do a fully illustrated guide, but ill still try to include some visual examples:

ANATOMY:
to preface i think that like 100% of the time you should reference a real life photo for anatomy rather than other artwork or drawn references. the best way to learn the body is by… well, actually looking at the body! but also artwork is informed by a person's own artistic ability/stylization choices/sense of idealism, so while looking at art can help give you an idea on how to break down forms, i think you would be best served observing real life references. i labor on this point because i do think that having over relied on drawn reference material and avoiding photographic references on the basis of not being interested on realism hindered me as a largely self-taught artist as a kid, so i want to encourage live or photographic reference since anatomy is one of the foundations from which everything else is built on. that being the case, all of my doodles i'm doing for this are going to be for the sake of example rather than to strictly say how you should or should not be drawing something

-> when you are doing a study of a photo, just try copying it as best as you can. pay close attention to the natural lines and shapes of the body -- the S-curve shape of the leg, the triangular shape of the forearm, the trapezoid shape of hips/thighs when they sit, and so on. note where the body folds or squishes or pulls; how mass will shift to accommodate a certain position. if a form is hard to visualize, focus on the negative space and carve that out, rather than strictly drawing the positive space.

don't expect to get it perfect the first time. in fact, iterate on it multiple times to build understanding. try doing it to a timer of 15, then 10, then 5 minutes. doing this will force you to have to prioritize the most important shapes. you can help reinforce this by using a thicker brush or a brush with no pen pressure (no joke ms paint works great for this) to force you to be loose and not become preoccupied with details.
-> pinterest is a great resource for finding and compiling photo reference material
-> organic shapes are curved, so embracing/emphasizing that (particularly for the extremities) can help make your drawings look more natural or fluid
POSES: -> it all begins & ends with contrapposto… you've probably heard of the line of action, which is related. if you're offsetting the shoulders & hips, it: makes poses more natural, more dynamic, and helps the pose sort of "draw itself" -- the legs will follow the direction of the hips, and you can use the arms to reinforce the angles
-> context is key. don't ask: what pose should i draw? instead ask: what do i want this character to convey? what does happiness, anger, sadness, and so forth look on this particular character? how do they express that? consider these drawings: these are both ostensibly the same pose, but look at how changing just the shape of the spine recontextualizes it.

for more on pose design i recommend watching Tracer & Pose Design 101 - The Animation of Overwatch by New Frame Plus (i promise this is a genuinely super informative video).
to expand on this, in general, all of the components of a piece (background, composition, pose, etc.) are best considered in conjunction rather than separately. it is difficult to choose a pose and then choose a background because they are missing the context that would make a piece cohesive. when you are planning a drawing, try to begin with your general concept/idea/prompt and then do several thumbnails -- small and quick doodles that should take no longer than 5 minutes each -- developing it: you may find that the pose and bg will naturally fall into place.

-> silhouette: the degree to which you need to push this varies by style but generally speaking the pose needs to be readable; i.e. instantly recognizable. try to keep important elements of the gesture outside of the silhouette. for example, if the character is pointing, keep that arm out of the interior of the body. the same pose can be more or less readable or dynamic depending on where the character is pointed in relation to the viewer
-> exaggeration!! goes along with the previous point. push the pose as much as you can (and what makes sense for your style) to communicate your pose as clearly and as intensely as possible.
FACES: -> i highly recommend the app Handy Art Reference Tool by Belief Engine for all things related to drawing hands/heads/feet. its on both android and ios. it isn't free -- it costs around $3 -- but that is seriously such a small price to pay for the amount of utility you get out of it: the hands models are fully poseable (there's also pose presets), you can rotate the head models however you want, and there is 3-point customizable lighting. it is really helpful for getting those super tricky and hyperspecific head angles that you just can't find a real life reference for. that being said given that there's only a few different head model variants, bear in mind how differences in features can affect what exactly a face will look like in those angles.
-> i still recommend doing studies of real people. as with anything else, learning generalized proportions is important, even if you are going to later on bend or break this depending on style
-> as for my own approach... it kind of depends on the style i'm doing at that particular time. for my paintings (what id consider my main style) i approach a character with a few real-world features in mind and then apply them to the best of my ability. it usually will take a few iterations to land on an interpretation i really like as i try out different things. a lot of the face also gets developed during rendering rather than through my initial sketch too, as i adjust for lighting and correct proportions on the fly

if i were to recommend anything, i think it would be to nail down your most distinct features first -- the ones that will make your character's face recognizable, and could apply regardless of art style. in my case with kim dokja, i knew when i first started drawing him that i wanted to give him a longer face and down-turned eyes. when i decided to do the disco elysium inspired set, in which i was breaking out of my comfort zone by letting go of any idealizations focusing on conveying characterization/making them feel "real", i landed on some more specific traits (defined lower lids/perpetually tired eyes/eyebags(?) the crease there idk how to describe it) which i continue to try to evoke even if im drawing something much more cartoony

those handful of key features will be the thing that you can then take into a simpler style and simplify or exaggerate to whatever degree suits you. you can also play with shape theory (square = sturdy/solid, circle = natural/smooth/welcoming, triangle = energetic/dangerous). shape theory doesn't necessarily need to be so rigid -- you can combine shapes as you please to convey whatever vibe you're going for -- so please think of it as a tool that may help rather than a rigid law you must abide by.

-> expressions: exaggerate them. thats kind of it!! make it big!!! you wanna be able to really feel those emotions. the principles of squash & stretch help here: think of how the muscles move when you, say, open the eyes or mouth really big. as one side of the face stretches open, the other side squashes to accommodate it

even without changing the position of the jaw here, moving the nose and scrunching the eyes will sell the expression

you can also play with squash/stretch to break proportions to sell a feeling more
since expressions are just, well, poses for the face, everything else for poses applies here (and facial expressions & pose should also be considered in tandem). while the term contrapposto itself just refers to the offset of the shoulders & hips, the similar principle of asymmetry also carries here as that will help make the expression a bit more dynamic.
