Thanks Amy @amywaterwings and Ire @urban-sith for the tags! I really love this concept. You find five bits of yourself that you gave to your fiction, also called: writerly ephemera. I’ve loved reading what others have shared so far, so let’s get nice and cosy and talk about my own innermost insecurities!!
Two mellow things to start from my current WIP and bane of my existence, Nothing Equals the Splendor:
I’ve been stocking spices and herbs for about an hour now. I’m admittedly taking my time, taking whiffs of everything, comparing aromas. My supervisor won’t say anything, because he knows no one else will do it. It takes ages since the products are so small and specific; all my coworkers hate it.
But I love it. I learn so much every time about what each herb brings to the table, getting inspiration for possible combinations in my bakes. There are just so many things humans have learned to grind up for seasoning. Evolution is incredible.
I have had many retail jobs but working at a grocery store was one of my favorites! I love incorporating supermarkets into my writing, whether it’s a character’s job or just a scene setting. I know it’s all very late-stage-capitalism of me, but they are just such common, normal places. I have a lot of really nice, mundane memories in supermarkets. And so, Simon gets to spend time at his job in one of my favorite aisles.
“Did you even bring glasses?”
“Nope,” I say, scrolling through his Netflix account. I’m clicking through his Recently Watched list. “Just drink from the bottle, it’s what I’ve been doing. Also, you watch so much reality TV. I would’ve thought it would be documentaries and historical dramas.”
Baz snorts, uncorking the wine. “Are you calling me boring?”
“No! You’re just very sophisticated.”
“I watch reality television for scientific purposes. You can learn a lot about the human condition from The Bachelor.”
“No, you can’t!” I’m laughing. “I suppose you watch Love Island to learn anatomy?”
He winks at me. I feel like I’m going to melt into the floor.
A friend of mine in college said this line about Reality TV to me, and I think it’s so funny. She was trying to get me to watch the Bachelor with her at the time. A couple years later I started watching so much reality tv because of a roommate and now I think that friend was kind of right!! Like obviously it’s exploitative and dramatic but it’s still people. It’s the human experience! However I’m not pretentious enough to claim I primarily watch the genre for this reason. (Baz is.) Later, Simon ends up making Baz watch Scooby Doo instead and they argue about which characters they are because I LOVE SCOOBY DOO.
From i would swim but the river is so wide:
My heart is still pounding, so I stumble to the bathroom. I run the tap and dunk my face in the freezing stream. It’s a surefire way to slow a heart rate. No matter how worked up you are, your body will always slow your heart down when it thinks it might be in danger of freezing to death.
I have a fun cocktail of mental illness, and this is advice I once got from a psychiatrist. She told me that while it wasn’t plausible to stick my head in a bowl of ice every time I was panicking, that I should try it at least once so that I’d know what it felt like for my heartrate to come down. I use this tool almost every day. I wanted to give a version of it to Simon in a fic where I was particularly cruel to him.
From Spinning Circles Down The Avenue
“Come here,” I murmur. He turns to me.
I kiss him again, deeper, real. His hands find my hair, and he draws me closer so that I’m almost in his lap. Crowley, I fall apart in his hands when he kisses me like this. I melt into him, letting him lead. He senses it — he always does — his hand dropping down to my mid-back, holding me up and pressing me even closer.
I am,,,, a melty boi. Y’all wouldn’t know it because I’m absolutely unguarded and unhinged on here, but in most areas of my life I’ve got my shit put together TIGHT. I’m driven to do the best I can in my work, in academics, in my social life, etc. I think this is why I come undone so easily when I feel safest & most supported (or when I’m anonymous online). I always give this trait to Baz, because I see this part of myself in him in the books. I also see Simon as a character who (when not burdened with a million other things a la Wayward Son) would find it fulfilling rather than draining to give this kind of comfort to a partner. So now you all know: when I’m being horny on main abt Simon throwing Baz around with his tail, I am actually just being SOFT lmfao
And finally…
I don’t have that much fandom writing yet, so I’m pulling something from the original queer childhood-friends-to-lovers story I’ve been plugging away at for three years. I tried to pick something short but it didn’t hit the same, and I wanted to give you a proper introduction to Angie and Joey because I love them a lot. It’s below the cut so it doesn’t clog your feed!
Meanwhile, I tag @snowybank @tea-brigade @nightimedreamersworld @caitybug @thewriterxj @palimpsessed @bazzybelle @bloodiedpixie @theflyingpeach @foolofabookwyrm @wellbelesbian @knitbelove @captain-aralias
And whoever else wants to do this!  Especially if we talk on the carry on server, if I didn’t tag you it’s because I have a stupidly hard time figuring out who is who between tumblr and discord lol
Anyway I really love reading these :) LET ME SEE INTO UR SOULS!!!!!!!!!!!
In this, Angie (who lives in LA) calls Joey. Angie has just bolted from a Friendsgiving party that she’d gone to even though she knew her recent ex would be there. She got too drunk and too sad, and she hasn’t really told anyone from home abt the breakup because they’ve all always hated the ex. Messy girls!!!
Anyway, I chose this bit because even though I’m not in love with any of my best friends, I bring so much of them into these characters. I’m so thankful to have people in my life who I can always call if I need them, even if I’m not always ready to explain why (and vice versa). To me, that type of security is the grandest gesture of love.
Angie rests back against the concrete wall, willing the Los Angeles weather to cool for just a few minutes so that she can calm down. Sending curses up to the still-warm night sky, she pulls out her phone. It’s 2 a.m. in New England, and she feels a little bad, but at this moment she’s not sure what else to do. Angie dials the phone.
“Angie? Everything okay?”
Joey always picks up. Angie nearly tears up at the sound of her best friend’s voice. It’s thick with sleep and concern.
“Thanksgiving is a dumb holiday,” Angie says into the phone, doing her best to keep her voice even. “It’s not even based on a true story. Actually, it’s a cover for literal genocide.”
“Mmmm,” Joey hums in agreement, and Angie can hear her shifting in bed. The lamp Angie knows sits on her bedside table gives a familiar click as Joey turns it on. “And you had to wake me up to let me know that America is terrible?”
Angie winces.
“I work in public education. I already knew that.”
“There’s never a bad time to be reminded of the failure of the American experiment.”
“Fair enough, comrade,” Joey yawns. “Are you alright?”
Angie takes a deep breath. She watches a plane travel through the smoggy gray sky and misses the stars she’s sure Joey can see out her window in their hometown.
“Not really,” she admits. The line is quiet for a bit, as Joey waits for her to elaborate. But Angie can’t seem to quite find the words to explain the break up. She doesn’t want the “I told you so,” can’t handle it right now.
Joey hums again.
“Lucia beat Paul to crawling,” Joey says after a minute of silence has passed.
Angie lets out a ragged sigh, smiling into the phone.
“I knew she would! You owe me $10.”
(Lucia & Paul are Joey’s niece and nephew!)

How to create believable characters.

youtube
Without good characters your story will be lifeless, and it will likely fail to draw your readers in. Your readers need to care about your characters, to want to know what happens to them next, how their story will end. They want to be drawn in to their lives. They want to feel.
Now when I say that your readers want to feel, its just that, they want, no, they need, to feel strong emotions for your characters, be that love or hate. But you, as the writer, also need to care about them. If you don’t it will be obvious in your writing. You can’t expect your reader to care if you don’t. You are the one that created them, you are their parent, you need to actually give a shit.
Obviously main characters need more details than secondary ones, they need to be fleshed out and to have a history, even if you don’t show it. But it’s important not to use secondary characters as filler, they have to be there for a reason, not a scenery.
Once a character forms in your head its your job to keep them there. Start to use them, write with them, get to know them.
You need to know them inside and out, their everyday life almost as well as you know your own or your best friends. But remember, just because you know it doesn’t mean your reader needs to, there is such a thing as too much.
The idea is to drip feed information to your reader so they can build a picture of your character in their head for themselves.
You will always find a little bit of yourself in your characters, this is perfectly normal, its just how you relate to them and how we bond with them, no matter how different they seem to be from yourself, male, female, young, old, it doesn’t matter.
Characters should never be perfect. This is both boring and annoying to the reader. Who didn’t know that one person at school, work or in your friendship group that is just too perfect? Everyone loves them, they excel at everything they do, and they always seem to have good luck? In short, you hate them. They are the bane of your existence and you want nothing more than to smack them in the mouth.
I know, I know, it’s so tempting to have a perfect character that can do no wrong, especially your hero. Perfect body, perfect face, perfect everything. But in reality, no one is like that and again, if they are, they probably have all the personality and excitement as a piece of dry toast.
Is that what you want for your character? Think about it carefully, because the answer may be yes, they can make an excellent enemy for your hero, but make sure you keep the annoyance where its intended, not where it’s not.
People have flaws, they have quirks and little issues that make them into the person they are. A good character will have them too, that’s what makes them real. If they are negative flaws that are detrimental to your characters wellbeing or that of others, then your character should transform over the cause of your story, learning lessons and becoming a better person. Although it is important to remember not to push too much onto your characters of your readers will get compassion fatigue and stop reading. Ill talk more about this in other videos about pacing your story.
Its important to remember that not all flaws are something that need fixing, people are imperfect because that’s what makes them them. Things like a disability or behavioural issues are not something that needs to be shamed or fixed, there is a difference between helping your character and alienating and insulting your readers with your intolerance.
You will obviously have a vision of your character in your head and you will want to convey that image as clearly as possible to your reader. But there is a fine line between description and making your writing sound like a modelling catalogue.
A lot of writers will try to use artificial props to describe a characters looks, for example, having them look in a mirror and then have a huge internal monologue of their entire face, hair, body and wardrobe. Boring. Think of your characters as real people, if you wouldn’t do something in real life, don’t have them do it either. And really, how often do you stand in front of a mirror and study yourself to that extent? You don’t.
A way to avoid this is to have other characters notice their looks for you, usually when meeting for the first time, but if they aren’t, then imagine how you would describe a friend to someone who didn’t know them.
One thing to remember if you are going to use one character to describe another is their relationship. I once read a piece where a male character noticed a female come into the room and say hello. The way the character was described was as a beautiful, curvaceous siren, with flaming hair that tumbled down to her perfect waist that a man could span with his hands. He talked about her seductive walk as she moved towards him…and then the writer revealed that it was his daughter. I was reviewing this piece and had to return it with a note saying that it was creepy. Because it was. No father should or would ever describe his daughter that way, no matter how sexy she may actually be, all they would see is their little girl.
I’ve been asked to give you all a few exercises you can do to work on your characters and descriptions, so here are a few to try.
Pick two people that you know very well and put them into the situation that you are trying to write. Its always easier with people that you know. Then simply change the visuals, the names and maybe some of the dialogue to better reflect your characters.
Next you can pick someone you know well and write a description of them as if you were sending it to someone they had never met so they could recognise them. This will teach you to notice details about people as well as your characters, to see what you notice about real people, it will also teach you what you don’t notice.
As I said earlier its very important to know everything about your character, and a good way to do this is with a character interview. They are available in abundance online and they are a very interesting way to get to know your character. They make you answer questions about your character that you would never have thought about on your own.
Naming your character is also very important. Names can convey a lot about your character is they are the right one for them, such as age, nationality, time period they were born in, even their class.
Doing some research before naming a character is always a good idea. Look up popular names for the time period in which they were born, the place they were born, even the class of their parents.
Avoid names of characters that sound the same as each other, no one needs a Cindy, a Lindsey and a Mindy in one place. I’d even go as far as to avoid ones that start with the same letter, many readers skim read, and this can become confusing after a while if everything sounds similar.
Of course, there are exceptions to every rule, remember that these are guidelines only that I have put together from my lessons and experience. You might want characters that are hard to tell apart, maybe if you have a group of mean girls and you want them to be almost interchangeable, then similar names work well. Everything you do must be intentional or well thought out.
All in all, the best thing you can do where creating your characters are concerned, is to draw from real life and your experiences, think of people you know, ones you hate, ones you like and use them shamelessly.
That’s all my wisdom for today. Blessed be, and happy writing.
