Explanation: Asteroid 319 Leona cast a shadow across planet Earth on December 12, as it passed in front of bright star Betelgeuse. But to see everyone's favorite red giant star fade this time, you had to stand near the center of the narrow shadow path starting in central Mexico and extending eastward across southern Florida, the Atlantic Ocean, southern Europe, and Eurasia. The geocentric celestial event is captured in these two panels taken at Almodovar del Rio, Spain from before (left) and during the asteroid-star occultation. In both panels Betelgeuse is seen above and left, at the shoulder of the familiar constellation Orion. Its brightness diminishes noticeably during the exceedingly rare occultation when, for several seconds, the giant star was briefly eclipsed by a roughly 60 kilometer diameter main-belt asteroid.

Othello day 22 - Córdoba to Cazalla de la Sierra

A long but beautiful ride today. It was a cold start to the day and overcast. There is a lot of moisture in the air so visibility wasn’t fabulous which was a shame as we were approaching Almodovar Del Rio, which has a historically significant castle with a white washed village below (also used in Game of Thrones). Happily coffee was right opposite the castle so we had a great view there. A few hardy souls, of which Jose was one, cycled up to the castle where they had a lovely encounter with a school group, young children who were being introduced to history via the use of clown soldiers, etc - lovely.

Up to lunch was a relatively flat ride, rolling past all manner of agriculture and into a national park. We saw fields of solar panels with sheep grazing underneath them - genius!

As we approached our lunch stop we started to see cork trees. We had a picnic lunch in an idyllic location overlooking a reservoir. Everyone was so excited about how lovely the riding had been. What I really missed being in the van was the smell of the orange blossom and lavender and the birds singing. What also helped enormously was that by now the sun had come out and it reached 22 degrees.

After lunch the climbing started, apparently around 2000m for the day. This afternoon was again very beautiful, very agricultural. We saw the black pata negro pigs that only eat acorns and produce the most delicious jamon, more cork trees, horses and cows and sheep.

Tonight we are in a small town but staying in a great hotel. It’s styling is very Moorish and really very nice. It’s a family run business and the food tonight was amazing, some of the best on the trip. For our mains we even had some of the black pigs - delicious. Heading to bed very full and for the sake of my waistline hoping I can cycle tomorrow 😳
