Palace of Fontainebleau or Château de Fontainebleau, located 55 kilometers (34 miles) southeast of the center of Paris, in the commune of Fontainebleau, is one of the largest French royal châteaux, and dates from 1137 it has been greatly extended and altered through the centuries. The medieval castle and subsequent palace served as a residence for the French monarchs from Louis VII to Napoleon III. Francis I and Napoleon were the monarchs who had the most influence on the palace as it stands today. It became a national museum in 1927 and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981 for its unique architecture and historical importance.

Monday, July 3: Chateaux, "Spirit of the Chateaux"
R.I.P. Steve Grimmett (1959-2022)
Chained and Desperate was basically something for Steve Grimmett to do while he was working on getting Grim Reaper off the ground, and apparently the rest of Chateaux didn’t mind, since they were adamant about calling him a guest vocalist as opposed to a permanent member.  But Grimmett was enough of a presence that their next two records had a soundalike vocalist in Krys Mason, and the semi-epic “Spirit of the Chateaux” was just as much a showcase for Grimmett’s wailing as Tim Broughton’s shredding: presumably intended as an anthem, the track was at least a little laughable due to the overwrought howling about a mythical castle (that of course was also meant to reflect on the band’s own majesty) and not entirely contextually relevant guitar firepower.  But even though the track completely failed as a Maiden-esque epic- Chateaux was an Ebony act, after all- it did work as a late-period NWOBHM lurcher, making the most of Darryl Johnston’s frazzled and fried production and balancing Broughton and Grimmett in such a way that the ridiculousness of the singer’s histrionics went toe to toe with the guitarist’s noodling and brought a certain streetwise majesty to the proceedings.
