The paintings in Alice Baber: Reverse Infinity at Berry Campbell are alive with color. The delightful paintings were created using thinned-down oils and acrylics to give the work a watercolor effect.
On one wall, the gallery has included the quote below in which Baber described her process-
“When I first conceive of a painting‭, ‬I must feel it‭, ‬I hear it‭, ‬I taste it‭, ‬and I want to eat it‭. ‬I start from the driving force‭ ‬of color‭ (‬color hunger‭); ‬then comes a second color to provide light‭, ‬luminous light‭. ‬It will be the glow to reinforce the first color‭. ‬I then discover the need of one‭, ‬two‭, ‬three‭, ‬or more colors which will indicate and make movement‭, ‬establish the psychodynamic balance in midair‭, ‬allow freedom to take place‭, ‬add weight at the top and bottom of painting‭, ‬and create mythical whirlpools between larger forms‭.” ‬Alice Baber‭, ‬Color‭, ‬1972‭
This exhibition closes 5/18/24.

like Vasa was (posthumously) included in Taylor Graham‘s booth at EXPO Chicago. Alice produced brilliantly colored abstract expressionist oil and watercolor paintings by staining her canvases with rounded biomorphic forms. Using a technique of pouring diluted oil paint onto a canvas in layers, she sometimes experimented with variations of a single hue and at other times created a purposeful…

“And now that you don't have to be perfect, you can be good.”
― John Steinbeck
“There are four kinds of people in the world. Those who build walls. Those who protect walls. Those who breach walls. And those who tear down walls. Much of life is discovering who you are. When you find out, you also realize there are places you can no longer go, things you can no longer do, words you can no longer say.”

"When wonder becomes a fundamental attitude of our spirit it will confer a religious character to our whole life, because it makes us live with the consciousness of being plunged into an unfathomable and incommensurable reality."
~ Sofia Cavalletti
[Watercolor, 1981 - Alice Baber]
• Sofia Cavalletti was a Catholic laywoman and theologian who received a doctorate in Hebrew and Comparative Semitic Languages from La Sapienza University in Rome and who was a biblical scholar.
The way Catechesis of the Good Shepherd began was quite by accident, without warning or planning, the way God so often comes into our lives. Sofia liked to say, “We started without knowing we started.”

• Alice Baber (August 22, 1928 – October 2, 1982) was an American Abstract Expressionist painter who worked in both oil and watercolor paints. She began painting at the age of eight, ultimately studying art at Lindenwood College for Women in St. Charles, Missouri until she transferred to Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. She later traveled around the world, studying at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Fontainebleau, France, and lived in Paris throughout the late 1950s and 19060s. She was a member of the March Gallery on Tenth Street in New York City, worked as an art editor of McCall’s magazine, and showed her paintings throughout Europe.
