Listed: Magic Tuber String Band
Tumblr media
The core of the Magic Tuber String Band consists of Courtney Werner on fiddle, Evan Morgan on guitar and banjo and both on occasional vocals and other acoustic instruments. Their approach involves combining traditional Appalachian instrumentation with the experimentalism of composers such as Henry Flynt, Harry Parch, and Pauline Oliveros. Field recordings and drones add texture to many of their tracks, and Werner and Morgan as well as their collaborators are formidable players. The arrangements are complex but not cluttered, with tunes often veering in unexpected directions. In his review for Dusted, Jim Marks described the band’s latest, Needlefall, as “the most satisfying in a five-year run of outstanding albums.”
Evan Morgan
Alan Clarke — Penda's Fen
youtube
I found out about this film (made for a BBC anthology series) from Rob Young’s book on British folk, Electric Eden. It is one of those immediately captivating films, almost perfectly made (and visually reminiscent of Tarkovsky's Nostalghia at times). The whole film builds towards a view of folk tradition and local history as an antidote to reactionary nationalism, all within the space of a coming-of-age story. We watched this for the first time recently and coincidentally were just asked to play before a screening of the film in Brattleboro this coming August for Epsilon Spires.
Alice Rohrwacher — La chimera
youtube
Alice Rohrwacher is really homing in on a kind of filmmaking that is related to the dialects of those films from the past we now think of as great films — but it is also something entirely her own. It's patient but also immediately spellbinding which feels like a rare quality these days. La chimera picks up the theme of a modern relationship to old ways that points towards communal culture as a way out of an increasingly privatized world. But it is also a lot more than that. It's both an obvious folktale and a dense dream. Would make a great double feature with Penda's Fen.
Mario Vargas Llosa — The War of the End of the World
Tumblr media
I was completely blown away by this novel. I found it at a used bookstore last summer and waited until December to pick it up because of its intimidating length. It is an onslaught of character portraits, nearly everyone vividly rendered and memorable despite the book’s length and the pace of events, time rolling back, jumping ahead, and standing still. The story of the War of Canudos, one of a heavily armed state attacking the most disenfranchised members of its land in the name of democracy, makes TWOTEOTW a very timely read.
Ryan Davis & the Roadhouse Band — Dancing on the Edge
Easily my most listened to record of 2023 and still on heavy rotation on into 2024. We got to see Ryan & the Roadhouse Band play this material live in Athens a few weeks ago which was absolutely transcendent.
John Francis Flynn — Look Over the Wall, See the Sky
We have been living in Augusta, GA since December of last year and there’s something about this record that really clicks with the architecture and layout of the city. I go for walks with my dog every day on a trail that runs between the canal and the Savannah river. To the south, the trail leads towards a long-abandoned, late 19th-century textile mill; to the north, past the hidden ruins of an old fish camp squat and the (often) roaring stone headgates. This record builds a sense of place and that place is intended to be Dublin. But its transposable nature hints at a deep connection between certain places that have not entirely lost visible monuments to their past industry and daily life. I especially like the version on here of Ewan MacColl's “Dirty Old Town.”
Courtney Werner
Chaz Knapp and Mariel Roberts — Setting Fire to These Dark Times
Chaz Knapp invited me to improvise with him throughout the Ozarks in 2022 using fiddle, dulcimer, voice, tape loops and natural sounds. I’m inspired by his attention to space and the sound of landscapes. He and cellist Mariel Roberts released this incredible album in 2023.
Tatiana Hargreaves — Soledad
I saw Tatiana perform the Soledad compositions at a residency in Durham, NC in 2018 and it was one of the most influential live music experiences of my life. They blend elements of old-time and contemporary classical styles with extended techniques to create captivating solo fiddle pieces that inspired me to want to compose myself.
Rafael Toral — Spectral Evolution
One of my favorite albums of this year so far.
Zoh Amba — Bhakti
An incredible record full of life and heart.
Evan Parker — Evan Parker with Birds
One of my favorite examples of pushing an instrument to be an animal, and duetting with natural sounds.

OPENING SCENE:
The Clown, unpainted and natural faced, is relaxing in bed, staring at the ceiling. The bedroom radio tunes out of “I don’t want to set the world on fire” by The Inkspots into Boris Johnson announcing the UK lockdown due to Covid-19, following this there is a knock at the door.
The Clown sits up and makes thier way to the door, puzzled. They open it to discover a suitcase, leather bound and secondhand. There is a note attached, it reads; “Clown, stay safe. xoxo - The Government.”
SECOND SCENE:
After examining the suitcase they make their way with it to the kitchen, they place it on the head of the dinning table enough for a family of six. They open the suitcase with an intrigued eye to discover it is filled with political strong items alongside circus props; black lives matter flags,NHS scrubs, destroyed LGBT flags, medical masks, and Trump memorabilia etc. As if someone had gathered the year 2020 at a children’s seventh birthday party and didn’t get the memo.
Underneath all the chaotic rubble there is a rope, thick and scratchy to touch. The clown reaches for it, in a flash the rope has bound them at both wrists restricting them from any sudden movements. Confused and scared the Clown proceeds to dive deeper into the suitcase discovering grease paint and brushes. Without any sense of control the Clown intensely starts to paint on a face consisting of a pale base, dark eyes and a raging grin. Uneasy yet weirdly satisfying.
The dining table begins to lay itself complete with plates and cups, the suitcases items start to form a tea party-like layout; using flags as a tablecloth and balloon animals lodged in between seats as if they were dinner guests. The Clown is confused and shakes their head in disbelief as the table starts to come to life in quite an overwhelming format. Alice In Wonderland on acid they thought.
The Clown becomes immersed in this scene as if they had been there for days, they start to disassociate and start to repeat like a faulty record-player.
SCENE THREE:
After the utterly surreal event the Clown stands and drags themselves into their room, locking the door behind them. You can feel the weight of the bags under their eyes. They make their way to the bathroom sink tugging away at the wrist restraints, trying to remove them with water, soap and other such items. They attempt to remove their painted face but everytime they look in the mirror a new variety appears on it; statements like:
“Black Lives Matter”
“Equal Rights”
“Police Brutality”
This continues a number of times before the Clown is revisited by their pale face, dark eyes and raging grin.
SCENE FOUR:
They step back into the shower where they press their back up against the tiled wall fully clothed. They reach for the shower’s switch without even checking the temperature. They go on to wash their body as if fully clothed showers were in their daily routine. The Clown starts to express moments of discomfort during this scene as if you were watching a circus animal locked in a cage being forced to perform just for you. This scene is performed in silence.
Eventually the clown slips free from their restraints after trying what seems like forever to do so, stepping out of the shower to discover an unpainted face in the mirror. It is a huge relief. The scene concludes with an exhausted figure laying in bed closing their eyes facing the ceiling with both forearms facing the same way displaying the rope inflicted marks.
The scene fades to black with a pause. A distant knock is heard. It is the door. The clown sits up and makes their way to the door, hesitantly. They grab the handle and pull as if it were a band-aid. They stare as they see a leather bound, second hand suitcase with a handwritten note reading “Clown, stay safe, xoxo - The Government”
Softly “I don’t want to set the world on fire” by The Inkspots starts to play as the scene ends with a sense of a repeating sequence.

The Dollhouse Family #1
Tumblr media
The Dollhouse Family #1 DC Black Label/Hill House Comics 2019 Written by M.R. Carey Layouts by Peter Cross Finishes by Vince Locke Coloured by Cris Peter Lettered by Todd Klein     On Alice’s sixth birthday, her dying great-aunt sent her the birthday gift she didn’t know she always wanted: a big, beautiful 19th-century dollhouse, complete with a family of antique dolls. In no time at all, the dollhouse isn’t just Alice’s favourite toy...it’s her whole world. And soon, young Alice learns she can enter the house to visit a new group of friends, straight out of a heartwarming children’s novel: the Dollhouse family. But while the Dollhouse family welcome her with open arms, in the real world, her family life is becoming much more complicated...and deep within the Dollhouse’s twisting halls, the black room waits, with an offer to Alice. The house can fix all this, the black room says. All she has to do is say the words...     Well I have to say that I am loving this Hill House line of books at Black Label, though I will be honest and say I really would have expected this to be at IDW where he's had success with Locke & Key. So it really came as a surprise to me when this line was announced at DC. Well this one right here written by Mike Carey was one I knew I had to have since I am a huge fan of his writing, comics and novels. So the idea surrounding this was incredibly interesting and then to see how this is going to go after reading this made it a must have for the freaky horror fan inside me.     I have to say I love the way that this is being told. How the story & plot development reveals the sequence of events as well as how the reader learn information is exceptionally well done. The character development is nice and strong and the established part of their personalities shine through while still leaving plenty of opportunity to grow, change and evolve. There is this malleable aspect to the characters and even among those not supposed to be. The pacing is well done and it's interesting to see how the twists & turns influence how the ebb & flow of the story. Just the overall way that this is structured and how I perceive it showcases Mike's talent, ability and skill at at this medium and working with it like he would a novel is something really rather wondrous to see.     There is something rather magical about the interior artwork that we see here. I love what Peter does and how he is able to create the linework and this attention to detail we see through the varying weights is utterly magnificent. With the finishes by Vince then the colours added by Cris well dayum this turned out to be something that feels classic, old fashioned or just lost to time. It fits the era this started in and is being told in the present. I mean the composition in the panels is utilised to perfection and how we see depth perception and scale is beautifully rendered. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show off this masters eye for storytelling. Now if only every panel had backgrounds utilised, I mean when they are they are complete wow moments. The colour work is stupendous and how we see the faces and the rosy cheeks and noses is so impressive. The way we see the different hues and tones within any given colour utilised to show shading and shadows is well rendered. I mean that first time we see Kent and the scenery of where he is I was transported to another time and place and that is the kind of work that sticks with you.      I knew we were in for something chilling and different but I had no idea what the depth of the darkness would actually be in this book. I am beyond impressed and thrilled by what this issue has shown me and the promise of what's to come. Now if only we'd get to see Felix Castor.

Outcomes discussed in essay
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I decided to discuss these outcomes in the essay as a straightforward comparison, below is what is in the essay. however, in the end, I have stated that “All three lookbook covers can be looked at and analyzed in many ways with various factors affecting each this only highlights a few examples of how a choice of typeface can affect a brand.”. There are a lot more points that can be added to this and further layouts can be developed.
“It is rare that you determine a brand's signifiers from only the typeface it uses, there are always other factors. For example this lookbook cover in three variations for a brand (See figure 13,14,15). What does each cover tell us about the brand in a theoretical sense if the brand existed? How could it be interpreted? Considering both the elements in the covers that are the same and the one element that is not; which is the typeface. Before looking at the typeface, the elements, which are the same, must be determined and what they mean. Each cover states the words ‘lookbook’ in the same position, the word/phrase simply tells the viewer what they are viewing, and here is the Oxford living dictionaries definition
“Lookbook- a set of photographs displaying a fashion designer’s new collection, assembled for marketing purposes.”
(Oxford dictionaries, 2018)
The lookbook is a denotation and primary sign as it is the literal meaning of what the item is. Assuming then that the person looking at this knows the definition they will then attribute the covers to fashion and make their own connotations from that. If not assumptions will be made from other aspects like the image and choice of typeface. How are denotations and connotations made from the image (see figure 12) the other constant factor in the covers? The image is of a woman sat down that is the primary sign and a denotation. Secondary signs can be picked out from the details, these are the connotations that are made by the viewer, details such as the styling and choice of clothes, the bright colours used and the choice of model. The conations are made individually like questioning where the clothes are from and why is the woman sat down? Both together the image and the word lookbook assuming the viewer can understand the definition brings the signified connotations together forming more views. For example, it is a lookbook with a woman on the cover indicating that it is a womenswear lookbook, the woman is young therefore is the brand aimed at younger women?
Considering the factors in the cover are the same, the factors that do not play a part in changing connotations further, which in this case is the typeface. This will further demonstrate an argument supporting how a typeface can affect your view of a brand by discussing each covers typeface individually. Firstly the sans serif typeface on a cover (see figure 13 and 9). Sans serif typefaces are a newer typeface created in the 19th century they have modern associations because of this. Visuable expands on this a branding agency.
“Sans serif typefaces have a really clean sleek feel and modern feel ..... Sans serif works fantastically with businesses who are forward thinking innovative.”
(Visuable 2018)
This may be how you see the brand and assume similar about the contents of the lookbook. Secondly The Bubble typeface cover (see figure 10 and 14) The Bubble typeface is irregular hand rendered and doesn’t fit into a typical typeface category. This means that it can’t be placed in time so it would be compared to similar typefaces and associations to them.  For example, it holds similar shape to the typeface Blanchard Solid on this Alice Cooper record (see figure 16 and 17) and similar line work to the typeface Stack featured on a Solomon king record (see figure 18 and 19). Both records are from the seventies; therefore you could compare the bubble typeface to this style used in the seventies and attach things associated to the seventies to it and the lookbook cover along with the brand. Thirdly looking at the lookbook cover, which uses Helvetica (see figure 15 and 11). This lookbook cover doesn’t include a brand name or logo but the brand may be recognized by the choice of typeface, this may be a problem with Helvetic as it is widely used by a variety of brands such ‘The North Face’ and ‘American Apparel’ see (figure 20 and 21). Therefore it might be associated with other brands on first impressions. All three lookbook covers can be looked at and analyzed in many ways with various factors affecting each this only highlights a few examples of how a choice of typeface can affect a brand.”
