Aldhelm's Brooch
Handmade by me, from Super Sculpey polymer clay, and painted with acrylic paints to resemble antique bronze. It measures 3 inches (10cm) in diameter. I sculpted onto a watchglass so I could get a curvature. The watchglass was removed after baking. It took me approximately 25 hours from start to finish.
A lot of fans talk about wanting a replica of Uhtred's sword. However, I wanted something more personal and meaningful to me. I had been planning to make this brooch for over a year now, and finally had the time and motivation to do so.

Progress photos. I rolled out the clay and molded it onto a watchglass. Then I printed out my sketch and used a pin to pinpoint the locations of the main features (the little spheres). Afterwards, it was just a lot of fiddly sculpting work to create the details. This was 100% done by hand; I did not use any molds or pre-created forms for this.
Painted version in indoor lighting.
Screencaps of the brooch. And you can see what I had to work with here, lol. Weird fact: his brooch changed color over the seasons! It was shiny gold colored in season 3, silver in season 4, and antique bronze in season 5. Don't know why it changed so much. Aldhelm's brooch is very unique and particular to him. He had a standard large bronze Mercian boar brooch in season 2, just like Aethelred, but for some reason that was changed to this one in season 3. It seemed to coincide with the change in his apparent personality, so I wonder if it was intentional or not?

Honorary Gremlinsson badge for @lord-aldhelm , who puts up with our daily Gremlinsson feralness, laughs with our shameles h*rninnsess (who said that) and all in all joins us in this funny little journey that is, well...this feral community.
I think Aldhelm is way past going into feral gremlin mode, because if he did everytime something upsets him, poor thing would never be out of that mode. So he's above it. But he is still the King of Eyerolls.

Lord Aldhelm of Mercia.
“No Man has ever served Mercia more faithfully...Thank you, Aldhelm”
I wanted to honor one of easily my favorite character in TLK fandom. To me, Aldhelm had one of the best character arcs in the entire show. He went from being Aethelred’s smarter, yet still annoying lackey, to being a beloved advisor and warrior to Aethelflead and to Mercia. While I didn’t openly hate him like I hated Aethelred, I found him quite annoying as he was always whispering poison about Uthred in the beginning. But as he started to realize how his Lord was actually the vicious, selfish ruler that constantly failed the Mercians, I realized that Aldhelm’s first concern was always his people, and that his ambitions were always guided first and foremost, by what was better for Mercia.
Then he started shifting his loyalties towards Aethelflead, a true ruler he could follow, and to be honest, their relationship was one of the most special dynamics in the show. He was devoted and loyal to her, not out of desire, but own of genuine affection and admiration. He loved her, despite knowing that his feelings were not reciprocated. Yet instead of growing bitter or harboring any sort of resentment towards Aethelflead or Uthred, he remained a loyal and supportive ally and friend to both of them. The first man to ever handle the friendzone right.
His death in 7KMD became one of the hardest losses from the entire storyline for me. It was incredibly tragic that a character who’s main trait was his loyalty towards his people and towards what was right would die charged with treason. It was truly heartbreaking.
James Northcote did fantastic job portraying a secondary character that slowly, subtly became a fan favorite, warming himself intro the hearts of many. I am sooo so glad they decided to built on that character and give us such a heartwarming arc we could root for.

So I just feel the need to pre-announce the fact that I’m gonna post something so weird that I honestly do not even know how to introduce it.
I have nothing to say for myself. I have no explanation and no justification. It is for exactly 2? people (that’s actually probably a stretch) and the amount of time I’ve spent on it is….actually not that much, but is still, frankly, egregious. Basically, I just want to make a little post disclaiming the whole fucking thing, so I can reblog the actual ficlet off of this and you will know how sorry I am for what I’ve done.
Anyway, here comes a faux-historical-academic Erik x Aldhelm friends-to-unconsummated-lovers-to-enemies Jacobite Rebellion tragic ballad multimedia AU that honestly makes so little sense it’s essentially abstract fanart. I would say no one asked for this, but you already know that.
The only spider-web-thin strands that actually hold this work to canon are:
Erik and Aldhelm as two characters who serve people/systems that become unaligned with the will of their hearts.
Vague references to one (1) brother.
Tragedy.
Otherwise this could essentially be about any random two guys, but I have - FOR SOME UNFATHOMABLE REASON - written it for them. Please laugh at me. It’s what I deserve.

Post Tettenhall Forehead touch, but Aldflaed
A rough pencil sketch I did today while waiting for the background to dry on my next painting. I will do a colored version of this soon; I can't decide if I want to do pastels or colored pencils...
I still suck at drawing people, and I had a very difficult time finding a reference of Aldhelm with him facing sideways, so I hope this looks ok proportions-wise.

Lord Aldhelm
Colored pencils on 12" x 16" drawing paper. This was originally going to just be a practice study but... yeah... This drawing took me exactly three weeks to complete.
This is from Season 3 Episode 10. I absolutely love his outfit; the beautiful ornate collar makes him look so elegant and refined. Also he looks so good in green and gold; it complements the seafoam green of his eyes and the gold in his beard.

Aldhelm and Aethelflaed
My gift to the Aldflaed nation.
This is the colored final drawing of the Aldflaed post-Tettenhall forehead touch that I sketched a few weeks ago. Prismacolor colored pencils in 11" x 14" (28 x 35.5 cm) Strathmore drawing paper. This was the first time I have attempted a bokeh (out of focus) style background; I hope it turned out ok.
After seeing the post yesterday I realized that their height difference is wrong but let's just pretend Aethelflaed is standing on a rock or something, LOL!
Drawing/painting chainmail remains the bane of my existence...
I am shocked that there are no Aldflaed fanarts! At least not as far as I have seen. That needs to be remedied. I will continue to make it my personal mission to increase the number of Aldhelm and Aldflaed fanart in existence.

Aldhelm sketches
So I am doing this, instead of working on the huge list of animals I had planned to paint. A good use of my time. It has been very rare for me in the past few years to have some time to paint/draw for myself rather than for other people as commissions, or making new art for my Etsy store to sell as prints and merch. It feels good to create art entirely for myself, rather than for monetary gain or internet clout. Anyways, enjoy my slow descent into insanity.
These are drawn from various sources. The first three are from screenshots taken by me, and the last was from a season 2 promo photo; sources in each image description.
I plan to draw at least 6-8 more of these graphite sketches, and will eventually make colored versions of many of them with colored pencils, pastels, and acrylics. And maybe I will stop being a coward and actually do that stained glass/Art Nouveau style painting I was wanting to do in the first place, but got in over my head by choosing to do an overly ambitious project that I probably did not have the skill level for.

Aldhelm sketch
Just finished today. This is from S4E10, screencap by me. I thought he looked so handsome in this episode, with his long floppy hair and pensive expression.
I was originally going to post these drawings in batches, but with my Christmas commissions coming up soon, it may be a long while in between drawings, so I will just upload them as I finish them. Next up, a ton of drawings from Season 3, because there were too many great pics to choose from so I had to do them all. :)
