perfume mini-reviews: lemon gourmands

i spent most of last month looking for a perfume that reminds me of lemon bars and these are the samples i got my hands on. eating lemon bars as i type this for a full immersive experience

🍋 Xerjoff Lira 🍋

there’s no lemon listed in the notes but it smells like lemon cake with vanilla frosting

dry down lowkey reminds me of indult tihota

after the citrus fades, it becomes a bit too sweet and vanilla for my taste

(literally smells like vanilla but also vanilla in the sense that it’s pretty basic)

lasts long tho!!

smells delicious but it’s missing something

🍋 Akro Bake 🍋

opening is lemony fresh. smells so much like pure lemon EO that it’s bordering on lemon scented cleanser

where’s the rum???? :/

akro bake: you think lira’s dry down is basic? hold my nonexistent rum

there’s a hint of that metallic sharpness from those ambroxan-adjacent synthetic woody ambers that i’m so fracking tired of

i feel like i’m dragging this perfume too much but it’s actually a nice scent

it’s just that it falls flat compared to the others on this list

oh my goddd????

toasty edged-lemon bars with a bite of ginger

+ caramel custard that also kinda smells like heated condensed milk

served with earl grey tea on the side

lira: who are you?

unknown pleasures: i’m kinda like you but i’m so much better

longevity isn’t as good as lira’s but idc idc

i like that the projection doesn’t punch me in the face

🍋 Dolce & Gabbana Devotion 🍋

the least “foody” scent on this list

joins akro bake at the nonexistent rum table

remember when i said akro bake’s lemon was toeing the line between lemon EO and lemon cleanser? this one crossed the line

the lemon fades after a while and all that’s left is a floral vanilla

smells nice when i get whiffs of it from a distance

if the others on this list were trying to replicate the scent of a lemon pastry, devotion is the stylized rendition of one

i think i’d like this more if i weren’t so averse to white florals

Details:

[general note: I think the full sized perfumes themselves are all vaguely in the same price range and many (if not all) offer a coupon with the sample set that can later on be used when buying a full sized bottle]

Matiere Premiere - chic, influencer-beloved niche house. With their own fields in Grasse (the founder grew up there), they offer a wide arrange of scents with a focus on giving raw materials (="matiere premiere") a modern twist, i.e. radical rose, crystal saffron, Parisian musk. Innovation with a focus on excellence. Also definitely a "parisian it girl" brand, or at least that's how it's seen online.

Bienaimé - vintage house (1936!) with a small selection of mostly flower-leaning, powder-dream, vintage-inspired scents. The original founder, Robert Bienaimé, is also the nose behind Quelques Fleurs - an icon in perfume history for introducing flower bouquets (instead of singular flowers). Now, under Cécilia Mergui, the house was revived (2012, new perfume line launched 2023) and puts an emphasis on dreamy nostalgia and sustainability.

Sylvaine Delacourte - niche house by Sylvaine Delacourte herself that, like PM, focuses on raw materials. Here the idea is to take one ingredient and interpret it in five different ways to bring out different facets and show them from new and exciting perspectives. There are three collections: Vanilla, Orange Blossom and Musk (my pricing includes all three sample sets, I couldn't decide because I love all three ingredients).

Sommelier du Parfum - website that not only sells a lot of niche perfumes and testers, but also offers collections of discovery sets and the opportunity to make your own selection based on the results of their perfume finder quiz. I just found the website because I wanted to try Bake by Akro and sniffed around in what else they had to offer. It definitely pays to check the og houses though because the Etat Libre Tester sets are cheaper than what they offer on this website, but other houses (like Akro) don't ship to Germany/have very high shipping prices, so SdP.de is still definitely an option. Anyhow, this was just a random selection of scents.

Akro bake, clean reserve skin, phlur father figure just because they’re popular and I wanted to see what the fuss was about. I know I already like super milk more than bake. She’s cleaning producty on the dry down.

Kyse delizia de marshmallow because it felt novel to get kyse on a sample site here in the uk. I had a tiny sample of cocco ala vaniglia when I first got into Reddit indie swaps and absolutely blew through it. Marshmallow wouldn’t be my first choice but it’s popular for a reason (I’m searching for fig e panna and cocco tiare personally)

where jace has lost his memory, gideon has lost track of time. things are displaced, different. he remembers waking in the baking sunlight of akros only to believe himself caught still on amonkhet. waves ground him, crashing and rolling into the side of the ship. vraska is familiar, her voice stern as she governs her men. gideon remembers blood on his hands, has brief glimpses of an imagined future where gore lays across the bow. mostly though, he remembers jace. the mage’s face is centered in his thoughts. memories of amonkhet, of kaladesh. he remembers how warm those cheeks felt colored with shy embarrassment. he remembers exactly how the heft of his body weighed in his arms. some days it feels like yesterday then tomorrow it feels like years.

nicol bolas’ magic is still working itself out of his body. hixus’ voice is at his ear, sharply reminding him to focus. he shouldn’t let some girl distract him. but jace is not a girl, not normal either. so he stands, sural singing through the air as he practices, tries to refocus himself first and foremost.

is it a surprise that his eyes fall to jace as he finishes, breath slipping free slowly, and weapon withdrawing. gideon tastes questions on his lips the longer he stares. what do you remember? do you remember the temple? do you remember before the fight with nicol bolas? do you remember how i kissed you and promised to protect you? his gaze falls away, stance straightening once more before he debates going through the motions once more. his fingers tighten into fists and he forces himself to focus.

at least ------ at least they were safe.

Hi Angel! Thank you so much, I’m so glad you’re having fun with my perfume posts 💋🪽

Although it’s slowly getting warmer, I’ve still been wearing creamy, sweet, warm fragrances lately. My favourites this season are Prada Candy (caramel and powder, an all time favourite), Divin’Enfant by Etat Libre d’Orange (orange blossom, marshmallow, tobacco — my most beloved boudoir scent!!), Hypnotic Poison (the almond-sweet, spicy classic. Perfect for rainy weather — who else could make you feel both sexy and comforted?), Bake by Akro (lemon and sugar, loads of vanilla — D&G Devotion’s slightly more sophisticated twin sister), Cuir d’Orient by Sous le Manteau (oh, I have a LOT of things to say about her. Creamy powder and sweet leather, soft and sweet). Other favourites I haven’t been wearing as much this year but still love love love are Chanel’s Allure EdP (peach, vanilla, jasmine — a 90s popular girl, so juicy and nice) and Dior Addict (jasmine and vanilla, the queen of cashmere-soft seduction)

In short: I’ve been pairing soft sweaters with powdery, sweet fragrances. Playful, comforting, warm — but maybe a little sexy, as well ❤️‍🔥

Yesterday while out with the dog, I heard the cranes for the first time. The wind is getting warmer, so maybe soon I’ll find myself with more crystalline, blush-pretty fragrances? We’ll see 🦢🫧
