Masterlist // Previous chapter // Next chapter
There is one thing that Henry has always wanted in life and that was getting married and having a family of his own. Growing up with four brothers, he always envisioned himself being surround by a beautiful wife, with lots of kids.
But he has reached the age of thirty seven and though he hasn’t got a lot to worry about—his biological clock isn’t ticking—he thought that by now, he’d at least have a wife and one kid.
Now he only has Kal, his loyal canine that he adores with all his heart. He takes a sip of his beer, as he watches some lame romantic comedy. It’s Friday night and as a single man, he could be on a date of course, but his profession as an actor, makes it even harder to date.
Most women are either in it for the fame and his money.
He witnessed his relationships crumble apart and now he is back being single, sitting on the couch with his dog, staring at a television screen. Last year he was thinking about starting a family, but he pushed it aside, enjoying his life as an actor. The movies he did were going great, but after the latest movie he did…
It was kind of a flop. It didn’t meet up to the expectations of the public and since that moment, he has been living a quite boring life, not thinking about taking any other offers. He wakes up, walks Kal and thinks about ways to meet the love of his life.
Henry isn’t so sure anymore about his acting career.
His mind wanders during the movie. He thinks about a future with a wife and kids. He can already see it happening: he would roll over in bed, wrap his arms around the love of his life, to slowly wake her up, before their kids would rush into the room and jump on their bed. He can imagine his beautiful wife sitting on the kitchen counter, with a few mini versions of them sitting next to her, as he is cooking for the entire family.
Henry rubs his face, fatigue kicking in. He shuts off the television and gives the big bear a kiss on top of his head. ‘You want a little something to eat before you go to bed?’ he asks Kal.
Kal wags his tail as an answer, accompanied with a bark.
Henry can’t help but chuckle.
It can pretty hard training Kal, but with the right amount of snacks, this dog can listen to him. Sometimes he even thinks that Kal can read his mind.
They go to the kitchen and he gives him a little kibble before he sleeps. He opens up the newest Doggy Herb bag and notices a slight change in color, but he shrugs it off. He bought Doggy Herb since the day he got Kal, so maybe there is more meat in this one that in the previous ones. He throws some in a bowl and watches as Kal gulps it all up.
The two of them walk up the stairs when Kal is done eating and he gets himself ready for the night. Henry stares at the sink in the bathroom, noticing the space that is left, because he doesn’t have anyone to share it with.
Before he can feel totally sorry for himself, he spits out the toothpaste and walks to his bedroom. He strips down to his underwear and steps into the bed, Kal joining him on the sheets.
He watches Kal falling asleep almost instantly and hopefully Henry can do the same.
But he can’t.
His mind keeps racing, constantly racing. The terrible reviews of his latest movie, the way how women kept saying how they want to have his kids, but none of them is good enough. He wants to fall in love with someone, someone who understands him, who loves him for who he is. A woman that he has an instant connection with. A woman where he can be himself.
When he does fall asleep, Henry dreams about a faceless woman, who holds onto his hand, as they watch their little kids running around in the yard, Kal barking as he runs in between the giggling kids.
That’s all he wants.
Henry is about to give his faceless wife a kiss, when he wakes up from hurling sounds that definitely aren’t his. He opens his eyes, turns on the light on his nightstand, to see Kal puking out his kibble on the new carpet.
Great, exactly what he needs. This is why he can’t have new stuff.
Henry gets out of bed and sits next to his dog. ‘Bud, you okay?’ he asks, but Kal’s legs give out and he collapses to the floor. His eyes are still open, but he whimpers and his breathing isn’t going as steady as it normally is.
‘No, no, no, Kal,’ Henry says, panic dripping through every word he speaks. He tries to find his phone as quickly as possible and Googles ‘Animal Clinics London’. He calls three different clinics, but none are picking up, not even the one that he usually goes to. He sees one that is an hour away, but in all honesty, Henry would arrange a private jet to fly them off to a vet that did pick up the fucking phone and he didn’t even care if he had to travel to another continent.
The phone rings twice, before he hears: ‘Animal Clinic Westside, doctor Olivia Tran, how may I help you?’
The woman sounds friendly, that’s a good start. ‘Hello, I’m terribly sorry for calling at this hour, but my dog is vomiting and I see some blood in it. He collapsed and is breathing really heavily and I don’t know what to do.’
‘Sir, it’s okay,’ she says. ‘Did your dog eat anything out of the ordinary today?’
He doesn’t even know for sure. ‘Not that I know of.’
‘You think it’s possible for you to come to the clinic? I’d like to see the dog.’
‘Of course, of course,’ Henry says.
‘I hope it’s not too much to ask, but could you take some of the vomit with you? Especially the part with some blood. I’d like to check it.’
Doctor Olivia Tran could’ve asked him to bring three human kidneys and he’d bring it, anything for his Kal. ‘I’ll bring it with me, of course.’
‘What kind of breed is your dog, sir?’
‘An American Akita. His name is Kal.’ Henry strokes the fur of Kal, blinking away the tears.
‘I’ll be at the clinic in about forty minutes, mister…’
Henry picks up on what she’s trying to do. ‘Cavill and I can be at the clinic in about an hour.’
They hang up shortly afterwards and Kal lets out a soft whimper. ‘Hang in there, bud,’ he tells the dog. ‘You can’t die on me. You really can’t.’
≫≫≪≪
With a weak Kal in his arms, Henry rushes into the clinic, only to discover that doctor Tran is already waiting for him. He doesn’t know what he was expecting, but he certainly wasn’t expecting her. He is mesmerized by her dark brown eyes, her perfect lips and her hair that’s in a messy bun, a few strands framing her face.
This woman is beyond beautiful. He can’t believe that someone like her is even real. The way she tilts her head, while she scans him shamelessly from top to bottom, makes him feel all sorts of things.
He concludes he has been single for too long.
‘Mister Cavill?’ she asks, causing him to snap back into reality.
‘Yes,’ he hastily says. ‘That’s me.’
‘Follow me.’ She walks in front of him, into the first examination room. Her fingers tap on the table and he gently places his dog on the hard surface. She strokes the fur on top of Kal’s head. ‘Let’s see what’s with you,’ she says, putting on some gloves. ‘You brought the samples?’
‘Yes, yes, I did,’ he says, clearing his throat. He shouldn’t be mesmerized by the vet in front of him, but he can’t stop staring at her. He hands her the bag and she sets it aside, while she opens Kal’s eyes, looking into them.
Before he can say something else, he hears small footsteps echo into the room. ‘Can I watch?’
Henry looks up, to see a small girl standing in the doorway. This must be the daughter of doctor Tran, because that girl is the spitting image of the woman standing in front of him. The doctor does look young though, almost too young to have a daughter who is at least five years old.
He needs to shake the thought of the doctor off of him, he tells himself. She has a daughter, so there is a plausible chance she’s taken.
Doctor Tran doesn’t look up from her clipboard, while she’s scribbling something down. ‘If mister Cavill doesn’t mind.’
The young girl looks up at him, two hopeful eyes meeting his. ‘No, of course not,’ he says, his heart melting at the sight of the hopeful look in her eyes.
The little girl walks over to the examination table, dragging a stool with her. She stands next to Henry and even when she’s standing on it, she can barely peek over the edge of the table. ‘Mommy,’ she asks, confirming that the little girl is indeed doctor Tran her daughter, ‘should I introduce myself?’
The doctor nods, while she checks the vomit, scrunching her nose. ‘That’s the polite thing to do, sweetheart.’
The girl holds out a tiny hand and says: ‘My name is Vanessa Tran.’
‘Hi Vanessa,’ Henry says in a soft voice, before holding onto her hand, that nearly disappears in his. ‘My name is Henry Cavill and this is Kal.’
Doctor Tran looks up from the bag of vomit. ‘Henry Cavill?’ she asks. ‘Isn’t there an actor whose name is Henry Cavill?’
‘Yeah, there is.’ Henry chuckles, feeling a bit awkward, but also amused that she doesn’t recognize him. It’s nice to be unrecognizable, even if it’s for a short amount of time. ‘That actor would be me.’
Her eyes widen. ‘Oh,’ she says, but she can’t seem to find the right words to say.
‘Mommy, is this man famous?’ Vanessa asks, while not breaking eye contact with Henry. The little girl blinks her eyes, almost in disbelieve that someone famous is standing next to her.
Doctor Tran pulls herself together. ‘Yes, sweetheart, he plays in some movies. He even played Superman.’
Vanessa widens her eyes as well and yet again she looks just like her mother. ‘Wow, Superman is here.’ She starts to giggle, a sound that Henry already adores. ‘So, if you are Superman, you are really strong.’
‘He is,’ doctor Tran says, placing the vomit samples aside. ‘He carried his dog inside.’ Henry can’t help but beam with pride as he takes in the compliment from the doctor.
‘Wow,’ Vanessa says again. She holds out her arms and asks him if he can lift her up. Henry looks over at the doctor, who smiles and simply nods, a non verbal sign of consent.
Henry lifts the little girl up in his arms and she wraps an arm around his neck.
‘I can’t wait to tell miss Sue that I met Superman.’
He can’t help but laugh, the little girl and her comments already making him feel less scared about what can happen to Kal. ‘Doctor Tran,’ he finally says, ‘is everything okay with Kal?’
‘What kind of kibble do you give him?’ she asks, while she is checking his heartbeat.
‘Doggy Herb,’ he answers, while Vanessa is tugging his curls, pulling on one strand until it’s straight, before letting it go and watching it curl together again. ‘Why?’
She looks up. ‘Well, then the news hasn’t reached you yet. We’ve had multiple cases of dogs who started to vomit after they ate the Doggy Herb kibble, some of them included blood. The manufacturer changed something in the ingredients and now lots of dogs have severe reactions to it.’
This woman demands all of his attention, without even trying. She is absolutely breathtaking and if she wasn’t talking about his sick dog, nor had a daughter, he’d ask her out.
‘Oh.’ Henry feels guilty. ‘I thought there was something different about it. I opened a new bag today.’
‘How much did you gave him?’
‘A little bit, at around eleven,’ he answers.
She smiles and without her telling him something, he already feels more at ease. ‘Then you have nothing to worry about. I’m going to put an IV on him, so he can rehydrate a bit. After that I’m going to give him some medicine and I’ll give you something to give him at home. In about three hours, you can take him home with you again.’
‘Really?’
She nods. ‘Really, sir. If you could place him on the floor? That would be easier for Kal and me.’
‘I’m sorry, miss Vanessa,’ he says, before he gently places the girl back on her feet. He shouldn’t feel this desperate need to impress the doctor. However, he can’t help but flex his muscles a little bit, as he carries the dog to the corner of the examination room.
‘Wow, mommy, he is really strong,’ Vanessa says.
‘No wonder he was Superman,’ doctor Tran says. She looks through some drawers and says: ‘I figure you want to wait here.’
‘I do, I do,’ he says.
‘If you want, you can grab something to drink around the corner. Maybe a coffee will help you stay awake.’
Does he look that miserable? Does he look that tired?
‘I can tell you how the machine works,’ Vanessa says. ‘I know how it works.’
‘That would be nice,’ he admits. Vanessa takes ahold of his hand and tugs him with her. He follows the little girl and he sees himself in the reflection of a mirror that’s right next to the coffee machine.
He does look miserable. His eyes are still red from the bit of crying he did when he drove to the clinic and the bed hair looks like multiple crows have been nesting there.
‘My mommy is going to make Kal better,’ Vanessa says, before grabbing a paper cup. ‘You don’t have to worry.’
‘I wasn’t worried,’ he tells the young girl, but the second it leaves his lips, he realized he only said that to impress the doctor. God, he is lying to a little girl, just to impress her mother, who isn’t even in the same room. For all he knows, the woman is married and the girl’s dad is at home.
But, come to think of it, why would she take her daughter to work then?
Vanessa starts to frown and she takes a step to the side, so she’s standing in the doorway. ‘Mommy, can I tell Superman he is lying and that you’re not supposed to lie?’
He can hear doctor Tran laughing. ‘You can tell Superman that, sweetheart.’
Henry feels a little finger poking his thigh. ‘Superman, you are lying and you’re not supposed to lie. My mommy says that you should tell the truth, especially about your feelings.’
He is genuinely impressed. This young girl is really in touch with her own feelings and can verbalize it. That’s extraordinary for someone her age, he thinks to himself. Doctor Tran is doing a good job with raising her.
‘I’m sorry,’ he says to Vanessa. ‘I’ll try to be better.’
‘You should, you are Superman after all.’
He has a paper cup filled with coffee and they accompany Kal and the doctor again. She hands Vanessa a juice box and says she needs to fill in some paperwork, but that the two of them can keep Kal company.
Vanessa and Henry stare at Kal, while Vanessa is slowly stroking his fur. It’s obvious that she’s growing more and more tired with every passing second, but she is desperately trying to stay awake. It’s really endearing, if Henry’s being honest and really not helping with his own baby fever.
‘My mommy is also a superhero,’ Vanessa says. ‘Not like Superman of course, but she always saves animals.’
‘Well,’ Henry says, unintentionally loud enough for doctor Tran to hear it, ‘your mom is an even better hero than Superman.’
That confuses her, because she frowns. ‘Why?’
‘Because I play Superman. It’s pretending. Your mom is not pretending.’
He watches Vanessa nod, as she is taking in what he just said. ‘Yeah, you are right. My mommy is a better hero.’ She sighs deeply. ‘Mister Henry, do you have kids?’
God, the girl is barely five or six years old, but she surely knows how to wrench his heart. ‘I don’t.’
‘Why not?’
‘Why not what?’
She rolls her eyes annoyed, probably thinking he is a slow one for not understanding. ‘Why don’t you have kids?’
He clears his throat. ‘I don’t have a wife,’ he says. ‘And you need two people for that.’
Her mouth falls open. ‘Well, my mommy doesn’t have a husband. I’ve always wanted a daddy,’ she admits with bitter sweet honesty. ‘But my real daddy didn’t want me.’
‘Enough, Vanessa,’ he hears doctor Tran say in a stern voice from the other room.
‘But mommy…’
‘No, enough. Don’t talk about that with strangers.’
‘But this man is not a stranger mom. He is Superman, he can help us.’
Doctor Tran walks into the room, an annoyed look on her face. She doesn’t say anything, just stares at her daughter, raising an eyebrow in the process.
Vanessa pouts. ‘Sorry.’
The doctor leaves the room again and Henry asks Vanessa about school, hoping the kid doesn’t start about her estranged father again, though he wants to know more about that and it is a convenience: doctor Tran is single from what she just told him.
He finds out that she is six and can already read what’s on the posters in the examination room. Even though this kid isn’t his own, he can’t help but feel proud, when she recites the entire alphabet and shows him that she can count to a hundred.
But all while she’s doing that, fatigue is catching up with her and eventually she falls asleep against his arm. He carefully lifts her up, hoping that he doesn’t wake her up and walks to the room where doctor Tran is currently doing some paperwork.
‘Oh, she’s asleep,’ she says when she notices Henry standing in the doorway.
‘Yeah, she was pretty tired.’
She smiles, before holding out her arms. ‘I’ll be right back,’ she says, as she holds her daughter close to her body. She leaves the room and probably will tuck her daughter in somewhere. He sits next to his dog, looks at him, looking less and less fatigued and more like his own happy go lucky self.
‘Kal is looking better,’ she says, while she crouches down next to the dog. Kal stares at her, almost with heart eyes. ‘I recommend you switch to something like Purina One, or something like that,’ she tells him. ‘Doesn’t matter, everything but Doggy Herb.’
‘Is it deadly?’ he asks. ‘The other kibble.’
She shakes her head. ‘Well, no, wait, that’s a lie. If you give him lots of it, it can be fatal.’
‘I feel so stupid.’
The doctor looks at him. ‘Don’t,’ she says. ‘From the looks of it, you are a great owner.’ She checks the bag with fluids and says: ‘I want him on the scale for a second.’ She removes the IV from him, but from the looks of it, Kal is too tired to move.
‘Why on the scale?’
‘To determine how much of the medicine he needs,’ she tells him. ‘We don’t want to OD him, do we?’
It’s almost a cruel joke, but he can’t help but laugh. This woman is quite something and he is seriously intrigued.
Henry is yet again going out of his way to impress the beautiful doctor, but her facial expressions don’t give away much. She turns on the scale and writes down what she sees. ‘You can place him there,’ she says, pointing near the entrance. ‘Maybe the view will help him a bit. He should get moving in about half an hour.’ He places his furry companion near the door and Kal can move his head up, staring to the silent outside world, all still too deep asleep. When he looks at the doctor again, she taps the screen of the scale. ‘Now I know how much you both weigh, but I need Kal’s weight.’
Why is he feeling insecure? She’ll probably know that his weight is mostly muscle, that is shows his hard work. He steps on the scale and watches her scribble something on the paper. When Henry steps off, he notices her frown. ‘What?’ he asks.
‘This only confirms what I thought.’
‘What?’ he asks again.
‘Mister Cavill, your dog is kinda fat.’
She could’ve slapped in across his cheek and he wouldn’t be as surprised as he is now. Kal is fat? ‘Excuse me,’ he says in a defensive tone, crossing his arms in front of his buffed out chest. ‘My dog isn’t fat.’
Doctor Tran doesn’t seem impressed by his facade at all. ‘He is,’ she tells him. ‘An average American Akita weights between the forty and sixty kilos. Your dog weighs seventy kilos, while he should be between the fifty and sixty kilos.’
‘It’s muscle.’ Geez, he never thought he could get this defensive.
The doctor tries to hide a smile and her overall amusement, but she is failing miserably. ‘It’s fat, I already felt that back in the examination room.’
‘But how is he too fat?’
She shrugs. ‘You feed him too much, I guess. I’m not there with you when you feed him.’
‘I give him the prescribed amount of kibble.’ And a bit more, but his dog can’t possible get fat from that, right?
‘Do you train Kal?’
He nods. ‘I do.’
‘And do you give him snacks?’
He searches though his pocket and finds a chunk that he usually gives Kal during training.
‘How many do you give him?’ she asks, studying the snack as she takes it from him.
‘About twelve of those during a training session and I do those about two or three times.’
’No wonder he is fat.’
Does the doctor need to be this crude? His dog nearly died, could she show him some compassion?
‘Mister Cavill, this is the size of a pound,’ she tells him. She breaks it into four smaller bits and adds: ‘Dogs don’t care about the size of their snack. Instead giving him one of those, giving him a fourth, isn’t something he’ll notice.’
Henry sighs deeply, embarrassed of his defensiveness. ‘I’m sorry,’ he says.
‘For getting defensive?’ she guesses. ‘Oh no, it’s totally understandable. Someone is saying something about someone you care about. But, sir, it’s my job to make sure Kal is the healthiest he can be. Just give him seventy five percent of what you would normally give him, give him tons of walks and don’t give him the entire snack, just a quarter will do.’
He nods, taking the tips in. ‘Thank you, doctor Tran.’
≫≫≪≪
Kal is finally feeling better and Vanessa has woken up again. She is hanging around Kal’s neck, giving him tons of kisses. Kal doesn’t seem to mind, because he continues to lick Vanessa’s face when he gets the chance. Henry knew that his loyal dog was good with children, but this is on another level.
‘I’m sorry that I called,’ he says to doctor Tran, who is leaning against the counter, her white coat hanging open, revealing a thick looking sweater.
‘Why? Your dog was sick and you called a vet. It’s okay, I knew what I was doing when I sighed up for the job.’ She looks at her daughter and adds: ‘Besides, I think I have a very tired, but very happy six year old for the weekend. She got to pet a lovely dog and met Superman. Honestly, I should thank you for calling our clinic.’
Henry lets his gaze drop on the petite doctor that is standing next to her. He doesn’t believe in love at first sight, but he certainly does believe in attraction at first sight. It has been a long time since Henry met a woman like doctor Olivia Tran. She blatantly told him his dog was fat and told her daughter that she could say to “Superman” that he was lying. She is definitely something else and he hates it that he has to leave now.
‘Well, thank you,’ he says, ‘for helping out Kal. I don’t know what I would’ve done if he didn’t make it.’ He holds out his hand and the doctor leaves him hanging for a good second, before she places her slender hand in his, adding: ‘It’s my job, mister Cavill.’
‘Henry, please, call me Henry.’
She nods. ‘Okay, Henry, I’ll see you in a few weeks, for his yearly shots he needs to have according to his passport and we have to check if you are a strict enough owner, because this little fatty needs to lose some weight.’ She lets go of his hand, before scratching the Akita behind his ears.
‘Mommy, can we have a dog?’
‘No, angel, we can’t,’ she says. ‘So give Kal one last kiss and say goodbye to Henry, okay?’
Vanessa does what her mother tells her to do, because she gives Kal a kiss on his nose and walks over to Henry, who crouches down, so he is about the same height as the little girl. ‘It was very nice to meet you, Vanessa,’ Henry says.
She wraps her arms around his broad shoulders. ‘It was nice to meet you too, mister Henry,’ she whispers, still a bit groggy. She lets go of him and walks to her mom, holding onto her hand tightly.
‘Thank you, again.’
‘Of course,’ doctor Tran smiles. ‘And I’ll see you in a few weeks.’
He steps out of the clinic with Kal and sighs deeply. This was quite something, he thinks to himself. As he walks towards his car, he looks over his shoulder, only to see Vanessa being picked up by her mother, balancing on her hip. The two of them wave to him and he smiles, holding out his hand and waving back.
When he gets into his car, Kal sitting next to him, he lets out a groan. He shouldn’t have a crush on this vet, he really shouldn’t.
But Henry keeps thinking about how doctor Tran stared at him, how Vanessa hugged him and how his dog seemed to be at ease with them, loving the doctor from the looks of it and adoring the attention Vanessa gave him.
He forces himself to stop thinking about this, because for all he knows, this is the last time he would see either of them. He doesn’t even know if his favorite veterinarian will be helping him when he gets back in a few weeks for Kal’s shots. ‘Forget about it, Henry,’ he tells himself sternly. ‘You’re not a teenager anymore, with a crush on someone he can’t date anyway.’

Significant Relationships: Zeki’s Praesul (WC)
BACKSTORY:
“We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light.”
Iman Amari lived in the darkness. Her sins pulling her deeper into a life she did not ask for. Bond and chained to her vampire that kept her tame and obedient. Locked away from those who had loved her; now either forgotten or dead. She was nothing more then fodder either for breeding or sustenance.  Soon, it was  the only life she had known the only one she wanted. One night, she was roused to the sound of metal breaking and the soft squeals of worn henges on old doors. Iman woke to find her restraints broken and the door to her cell left ajar. In the rarest moment of clarity, the young woman ran. Bare feet padded against the cool concrete. Her heart pounds against her chest but adrenaline drove her forward.
Following a path she had never taken but was some how sure it was the right one. Iman didn’t stop running, not when the cool night air hit her skin and filled her lungs. Nor when twigs and pebbles bore into the soles of her feet. Not till she stumbled upon a small camp of hunters; humans  who had taken her in.  “No one can escape the farms, those who try aren’t long for this world.” she would tell them. “ But you did mama, how?” this was his brother’s question. There was no answer at first; the barest of smiles played on her lips. Leaning forward she kissed Omar’s forehead first and then Ezekiel. “ It was a miracle.” Omar looked on in wonder after each telling; while Ezekiel wore a deep frown on his young face.  When ever he heard the stories of her life he couldn’t make heads or tails of it. He knew the world they lived in but it all seemed so far fetched. She'd been addicted to drugs, used by devilish creatures. She should have died: Iman Amari should not be alive but she was, how? It was a conundrum an eight year old couldn’t  understand.
“Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.”
The Hideout is all he’s known as home. Now fifteen, he watches his twin brother Omar grow and train. Watches their step-father train Omar up. He is bigger than most,  bigger than Ezekiel. He doesn’t have the taste for fighting. Not because he’s afraid - though a part of him is. He doesn’t crave violence but he knows it is a necessity. Joseph makes him watch though; not to be cruel but to teach him.  “I’m not strong like you, I can’t do it.” is his explanation as he throws his practice sword to the ground. “ Don’t be a baby, Zeki.” his brothers words are taunting and cruel. There are people watching, pretty girls he wants to impress with his power and boys who’s respect he wishes to gain. Not that he didn’t have it, even with his younger sister Ezekiel is called the runt by his brother and friends. Though never around their parents, thats how he knows when one is near. Eyes sting as he watch his brother and company run off. Frustrations fuels him as he punches the wall. Again, and again until strong hands  take hold of his shoulder.
“ I have something for you,” Joseph voice is commanding but there is a softness that cools Ezekiel’s anger. Turning to face the man that tower over his five foot form. Dark eyes widen in delight as a small-- some might say sickly looking dog  placed in his arms.    “Even the weakest in the pack can grow and become strong.”  Ezekiel isn’t sure why this gift is so precious or why what is said by Joseph stays with him but they do. Joseph words are prophetic-  he does become strong. Stronger than any would expect —except perhaps his mother and his real father. Over the years he grows, his goodness and light shining through. What he does he does for love, love of family or friends for those in the hideout and lost sheep that have yet to be found.  There is something stirring  within him, though he doesn’t know it. A force that isn’t his own. pushing him toward the path of  the light and righteous. Dictating decision he believes are his own - though his thoughts are noble. There is a higher purpose at play here and soon his life will no longer be his,  if it ever was. He is a tool to use.  He is a weapon to wield.  He will become a crusader.
A Little Deeper:
- Ezekiel leaves the hideout at 18, this is around the time that his mother Iman, stepfather Joseph and brother Omar are killed during a scouting mission. Killed by outsiders that had ambushed them.
- When offered the chance to kill one of the outsiders who killed his brother and mother, Ezekiel couldn’t bring himself to do it. He wanted to, the desire was there but for some reason he resisted the urge and allowed those in power to enact  justice for Josphe, Iman and Omar.
- He is completely unaware of his angelic lineage or that he is a Nephilim
-Married at the age of twenty-five and has been faithfully so over the last five years. His half sisters were both at the union.
-  Some with in the hideout still call him runt or Zeki but the nickname is endearing to him
- Recently, he’s been feeling pain in his chest and tingling in his finger tips and isn’t sure why.
-His Akita is pretty damn big some would say abnormally so.
CONNECTIONS:
*important connections towards Ezekiel’s development. Feel free to reach out if interested in taking  plots with * next to them ( will eventually put them up for WC :D
- *Love you for a thousand years: This is Ezekiel’s wife. He is fiercely protective of her though maybe he doesn’t need to be. Trust her more than most .
- You got a friend in me: Old hideout buddies he probably is still in contact with. Though discreetly.
- The darker the berry: A demon or fallen that was at one point very tempting to Ezekiel probably is still tempting. Some how he resists and it can be rather frustrating... for them.
- *Wise old sage: (Praesul) Though they are not at all old or at least they don’t appear to be. This is a  connection that will help Ezekiel towards his awakening/ enlightenment.
- *Always and forever: ( familial ) Zeki has two younger half sisters. They were very close at one point before he left to live on his own. And at least on his part, he tries to keep that closeness. There might be some bad feelings with him leaving so soon after their mother’s death.

Heyy! I was wondering if you could write a markiplier x reader, where he goes with Chica to a park and Chica starts playing with readers dog? If you don't want to, I'll totally understand
Dog days
Tumblr media
A/n: Yay!! First request! Thank you so much for requesting this it was and adorable one and I enjoyed writing it! Sorry if it’s not that good I’m still trying to improve on my writing so hopeful in the future I’ll get better! Chica and Mark have my whole heckin heart~
The sun was shining, the day was warm and there wasn’t a cloud in sight. Mark decided that today he would take Chica out to the park. Recently he noticed that his work was taking over his personal life, and since the weather was beautiful he made today the day to take Chica to the park near his house.
Mark walked downstairs, Chica close on his trail
“ today’s the day bubs! “
He said enthusiastically, Chica barked in response.
He opened his garage door and let Chica run out first before he followed, he reached out to the nearby counter, picking up the leash and calling Chica over. After clicking it onto her collar, he stepped back inside and wandered through the front door to leave; locking it behind him.
~
( Y/N ) followed her regular route to the nearby park, her Akita named (D/N) pulling her along. As she walking into the park she noticed that there was much more people than usual. Lots of them had dogs which excited and worried her since (D/N) wasn’t easy to control when it came to other dogs. She decided to follow a path that would lead her to a private part of the park where other would rarely go to. She let out a satisfied breath noticing that no one had beat her to the spot, she unbuckled (D/N)’s leash and let them roam around the empty area.
(Y/n) threw a ball watching (D/N) scamper after it excitedly, she smiled widely. Looking away to check her phone as a notification sounded, she tucked it back into her pocket a second later to notice (D/N) hadn’t come back. She quickly looked around, panic taking hold of her body as she ran the direction she saw them go last.
“ Hey hold on now! “
said a deep male voice, she jogged over the hill to see a bright golden dog tugging at a toy with her own dog. She let out a sigh of relief and rushed over,
“ hi! I’m so sorry sir! “
The male jumped at the new voice, looking up to meet her eyes. He stared for a moment before a sweet smile graced his face, (Y/N) blushed lightly
“ oh hey, no it’s no problem! I’m guessing this bub is yours “
She nodded and laughed
“ yeah, (D/N) you nearly gave me a heart attack! “
She scolded sweetly, she then turned back the the taller man
“ I’m (Y/N) by the way! “
The man held his hand out for a handshake
“ I’m Mark “
(Y/N) accepted the handshake and smiled widely.
Chica noticed the newcomer and trotted over to (Y/n), her tail wagging fast.
(Y/n) giggled and bent down to pet her, making (D/N) come over and join the petting.
“ I’m guessing this ones yours? “
Mark nodded bending down to join the trio
“ you got that right her names Chica“
She nodded along before straightening herself back out, Mark following along. The two dogs ran off down the hillside, following an unknown object
“ I’m glad she’s got someone to play with “
Mark said, breaking the silence
“ yeah, me too, she’s a really gorgeous dog! “
Mark laughed placing a hand on his hip
“ thanks, so is yours. Do you normally come over here, I can’t help but feel like I’ve seen you before“
(Y/N) nodded
“ I do actually, but since today has been the nicest day this week I decided to stay longer than usual “
The two adults walked down the hill following the two energetic dogs,
“ I’m sorry to say I haven’t seen you around “
Mark dismissed her politely
“ yeah, my work has been keeping me away from getting out. I decided that today was just to perfect to let pass “
She smiled at his words,
“ your are correct good sir “
They both laughed with each other.
“ if you wouldn’t mind me asking, would you two want to join me and Chica for a coffee in the nearby Café. “
(Y/N) blushed and nodded
“ me and (D/N) would love to “

Out of concern for his stress level, a handling assessment was not attempted at this time. Summary:: Yako's owner reported that he barks when he sees other dogs. Here at the Care Center, Yako is uncomfortable around novel dogs. He spends most of his session keeping to himself and wandering the yard, avoiding the novel dog in the process. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner Recommendations comments:: Place with a New Hope partner: Due to the high level of anxiety displayed in the care center combined with his overall timidness, we believe Yako may be best set up to succeed through placement with an experienced rescue partner who can reassess his behavior in a stable home environment. Force-free, reward based training only is advised. Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Fearful,Anxiety Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: Yako's previous owner notes that he may growl and bark when his toys are approached. We recommend that Yako be left alone while eating, and that food guarding behavior modification steps (available at ASPCApro.org) be utilized if this behavior is problematic in his future home. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Yako's mouth, and any time something is removed he should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. He should be taught the "drop" cue and trade-up games. Fearful: Yako is a bit fearful at the care center, he appears to manage his stress well though has escalated to higher level warning signals when uncomfortable. It is important to always go slow and give Yako the option to walk away from any social interaction. Yako should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Yako’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Yako would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. Anxiety: Yako has shown some signs of potential anxiety in the care center, vocalizing (whining, barking, panting) continually through the SAFER and through one-one sessions outside. This behavior was not reported at intake or in his previous home environment so we cannot be certain whether similar behavior will be seen in a future home environment. YAKO IS RESCUE ONLY…..TO SAVE THIS PUP YOU MUST FILL OUT APPLICATIONS WITH AT LEAST 3 NEW HOPE RESCUES. PLEASE HURRY!!! IF YOU CAN FOSTER OR ADOPT THIS PUP, PLEASE PM OUR PAGE FOR ASSISTANCE. A Man’s Best Friends (Oneshot)
Rating: T Pairing(s): Hanzo/Happiness, Hanzo & his cute puppies Warnings/Triggers: Mentions of blood, mild swearing, description of corpses Notes: Mermaid AU, Human!Hanzo, I’ve been told the cuteness of this made someone cry so you’ve been warned Summary: Early in Hanzo's Ecopoint career, an unusual call to action brought friends into his life that he never knew he missed. It's only the beginning of their adventures...
Another fic for @kannibal‘s MerCree AU over on Twitter (go check it out for more info and art!!), this time focusing on how Hanzo came to own his loyal dogs (Tinted Moonlight fans will be pleased with their addition! ;P)
AO3 || Twitter || Ko-Fi || Storenvy
Read below the cut
Hanzo had been working with Ecopoint for less than a month when the emergency call came through: a flash storm had struck a civilian tour group off the western coast of Ross Island and Overwatch had ordered them to act as first response until rescue services arrived from mainland. It was outside of their expertise but they were the best chance those people had at surviving the next twelve hours.
Normally, Hanzo would be kept within the offices to avoid public scrutiny towards the higher ups. However, in this situation, all capable hands were called upon to sail so he had no choice but to head out on his motorboat. Certainly not the most glorious of jobs nor the best use of his skills, but Hanzo couldn’t find it in himself to care all that much.
Anything was better than wasting away at a desk.
The shipwreck…
It was too familiar, seeing bodies floating amongst the wreckage. Images pulled straight from his nightmares of another time, another ocean too close to heart. Hanzo stared at them, hands gripping the edges of his boat as he sought out a flicker of green, mind screaming for the wind to calm, for the waters to settle, just give him his baby brother back—
No, Genji was…
It didn’t matter.
Hanzo pulled himself away from the group, trailing along to the nearby cliff rocks. There were enough agents here to pull up survivors and no one was checking the land for anyone stranded, or at least that’s what he reasoned to himself as good enough reasons to run away.
Away from the noise and rabble, Hanzo could actually clear his head and breath easily. The dragons rolled under his skin, itching all up his arm, and he ignored them. One round of these rocks and he could go back to the others in better spirits.
As he neared the land, watching the waves lapping at the cliffside, a sharp, high-pitched noise broke through the ambience to him. Hanzo pulled his hood down and looked around, listening closely. It got louder as he neared the cliffs, a never-ending chain of short barks - too quick for a seal pup, not deep nor a wail like an adult’s. There were no dogs stationed on Ross Island, yet there was no mistaking that sound.
Turning a corner, Hanzo came upon the source: a dog stranded on a rock’s edge, limping around the small space it occupied, and barking like there was no tomorrow. Hanzo cut the boat’s engine and let it float up close, slowly standing with his arms out as he clicked his tongue.
“Hey, hey,” He cooed as he came up to the rock ledge, making himself as small as possible. “I’m not going to hurt you.”
The dog - a puppy, now that he was closer, only a couple months old at best - kept barking, trying to move away from him but with nowhere to go, it was just as stuck. It snarled, a weak, pitiful sound, and snapped at Hanzo’s glove when it came close enough. Hanzo sighed and allowed it; the glove was thick enough to stop the puppy from causing any real damage.
With the puppy occupied, Hanzo made a grab for its scruff and hauled it off the rock. The puppy kicked, whined and shivered but was too weak to put up a real fight even as Hanzo released it onto the boat. All it could do was peer over the side and howl, staring out onto the open water.
Hanzo startled when he heard a howl of reply.
He cursed to himself and gave the puppy a look. It ignored him, shifting on its paws as it yipped and barked at the water. Hanzo followed its gaze to the waves, narrowing his own as he searched it. A dot of white came up from the water, howled to them and Hanzo pushed the boat off the rocks, floating closer.
Sure enough, another puppy was paddling towards them, struggling to stay afloat with something clenched in its teeth. As Hanzo drifted the boat closer, he saw the full form:
A person.
“Kuso,” He cursed again, starting the engine up again and rushing over to them. The puppies made more noise and the snippy one left pawprints of blood all over the floor; a problem to deal with later.
Holding steady as the puppy and survivor came into clearer view, Hanzo’s stomach dropped and he bite down a wave of nausea. Their face was down in the water, no movement to be seen. The puppy was pulling on their coat sleeve and from what little he could see, the skin was too blue, too bloated to be alive. Not that the puppy had noticed as it came up to the boat, pawing at its sides and whining loudly.
Without thinking, Hanzo unzipped his coat and pulled the puppy out, shoving it into his coat and ignoring how the wet fur felt against his shirt as he zipped back up. The puppy whined again and curled up to press against his warmth, shivering despite it. Hanzo stroked an ear and, careful not to jostle, reached down to pull the body out.
Even through his gloves, he could feel how cold and stiff they were, and bit his tongue as he dragged them onto his boat.
The standing puppy barked and poked at the body with its nose, whining when there was no response. Hanzo tore his gaze away from the lifeless blue skin and open, frozen eyes that saw nothing, and held tighter to the puppy nestled against him. The other one cried and looked up at Hanzo, and if he didn’t know better, he would say it was heartbroken.
He opened his mouth but no words came out. What could he say to a pair of dogs to make them understand they couldn’t save this person? That they were safe?
Instead he stroked both of their ears without protest from either and did one last sweep of the area - nothing but water and washed up wreckage - before turning back on himself to the designated rescue service dock. The rest of the effort could go on without his help; someone else needed it more.
0XX0
Once the body had been taken away to be identified (and he allowed the puppies to see for themselves that the person was gone for good, even if he had a hard time pulling the wet one away), Hanzo dragged them all to the first aid tent set up on the beach and set himself in an isolated corner to take care of the problem that left his boat in a bloody mess.
The puppy whined and nipped as he cleaned the injured paw, but Hanzo held on and winced at the sight. A deep cut across the paw pad, blood half-clotted and frozen from exposure. It would need stitches and antibiotics to avoid infection and possibly losing the leg, something that while Hanzo was trained to do, did not look forward to holding down a defenseless puppy.
Hanzo let out a long breathe and raked his thoughts for something - anything - to get his mind off it. The wrapped up puppy, curled up in a spare blanket on his lap, watched his movements with tired eyes and he soothed down its fur, whispering nothings to it.
He kept talking quietly, keeping his voice strong and steady as he rifled through the first aid kit. The puppies watched him and he looked them over, taking them in for the first time since finding them. Their most obvious feature was their thick white fur, though upon closer inspection Hanzo could see that they had faint red-blonde markings over their heads - the injured one had them akin to Urajiro markings, while the drying one had them in large spots over its front end. The curled tails and tight knuckles of their paws confirmed his suspicion of their Akita Inu breed.
The revelation brought a smile to his lips and he cooed nonsense at them, basking in the memories of his family’s pack of Akitas. His father forbade him and Genji from playing with them, trained or not. But that never stopped him from wishing for their loyal companionship, or a chance to bury himself in the fur and laugh as they pounced him for treats.
Friends he could actually trust.
The puppy seemed to calm as he talked about everything and nothing, and he kept it still long enough to securely stitch the paw pad together and administer the antibiotics. The puppy certainly wasn’t happy about it but didn’t make any move to chew at the bandages wrapped around its foot.
Hanzo took the chance to do another check and change the wet blankets for dry ones. While there were no collars on either puppy, there was a dent in the neck fur indicating there had been before the storm. They were probably on the ocean floor now, and with it their names and a way home. Not that he could give them names, because that would mean getting attached and—
The injured puppy - a male - squeezed himself onto Hanzo’s lap, curling around his blanketed sister and yawned with a squeak. Hanzo stroked his head and the puppy caught his hand, licking his thumb before starting to suckle on it.
Well, Hanzo’s heart was a lost cause.
The three of them stayed in the corner for who knows how long before one of the head researchers (Hanzo couldn’t remember her name at the top of his head, he had his attention held elsewhere at that moment) came over to him to tell him the mainland services had arrived.
“We looked at the records and the owner of these dogs didn’t survive the wreck,” She said, looking between her clipboard and the puppies, her mouth set in a thin line. “The ship captain confirmed the body you brought back was their owner.”
Hanzo stroked his free hand over the puppy’s ears, swallowing as he remembered how hard she had tried to save them. He nodded as she yawned and licked his fingers, staring up at him with warm honey eyes that he couldn’t resist. Her grip on him was tight and he knew he wasn’t letting go any time soon.
“What will happen to them now?” He asked, raising an eyebrow.
His boss rolled her shoulders and shook her head. “Next step will be to contact family and direct the dogs to them if they’re willing, but for now…”
She watched them, relaxing her brow and sighing. “Probably best they stay with you. There’s already too much for the rescue servicemen to handle. Can you handle them?”
Hanzo nodded, releasing the tension built up between his shoulders. “My family bred Akita Inus for generations, I know what to do.”
“Alright, I’ll leave you to it. You can head back to base, we don’t want anyone here recognising you.” Hanzo held back a biting remark and just nodded again as he pulled his hood up, leaving nothing but the sleepy puppies in his line of sight.
They would need names afterall.
0XX0
It didn’t take a genius to see how enamored Hanzo became with the new canine additions to his bunk, but most were certainly surprised by how quickly it happened. The agents and researchers at the Ecopoint base knew Hanzo to be aloof, stoic and at best, moody in interactions with others. Yet, when they watched him with the puppies from afar, it was as if he were a completely different person.
He smiled widely when they barked for his attention, gladly gave them ear scratches and belly rubs, and laughed at their childish antics in the bunkers. If the Ecopoint group chat was full of puppy photos, no one complained (or told Hanzo about it).
Hanzo himself made a point to ignore his ‘co-workers’ and focus on the puppies, now named Iwanko (イワンコ), for his insistent barking on the rock ledge, and Hachiko (ハチ公), for her loyalty and diligence to her master. He made them temporary collars from strips of old reflective jackets and took responsibility for their medical care, hiding himself in the medical bay to change bandages and give medication. They slept with him on his top bunk bed, curled up on either side of his head and growling at whoever strayed too close during the nights.
(If Hanzo stopped sleeping with a dagger under his pillow, that was his business alone.)
Being stationed in a highly sensitive research base, Hanzo spent most of his free time training Iwanko and Hachiko to act responsibly. Thankfully their previous owner had the sense to train them with basic commands, which helped ease them into Hanzo’s more intense training regime. From sit, shake, and heel, they learnt to track a scent, retrieve biotic emitters from a backpack, and activate the SOS line on Hanzo’s communicator.
A pair of eager students if he’d ever seen one, though Hachiko was perhaps a touch too zealous in her goal to please Hanzo. She would trip over her own feet in her bursts of energy to get a task done, or even trip him up if he didn’t acknowledge her accomplishments fast enough. Iwanko, while not as energetic, preferred to learn things at his own pace. Quite stubbornly so, if Hanzo had anything to say about it, but once he knew the command, there was no forgetting it.
Some of the agents, when they thought Hanzo couldn’t hear them, would say that the only reason the pups learnt anything was because of their equally stubborn teacher. It was meant as a scathing remark, but Hanzo held his head high and took pride in his relentlessness to teach his new companions. His methods were effective and that was all that mattered to him.
In the midst of it all, time taken up elsewhere and everything else taking a backseat, it honestly surprised Hanzo when he found 3 months had passed before any news from the previous owner’s family came back to them.
“None of the next of kin want them,” Dr. Khalil told him in the conference room, surrounded by other researchers and yet no higher ups. “So our best option is to send them to New Zealand for rehoming.”
“Is that their only option?” Hanzo asked, crossing his arms and leaning against the table. It earned him a room full of stares but he held up against them. He’d faced down worse for less.
“We can’t keep them here, Shimada,” Khalil sighed, shooting him a look of long-suffering and impatience. “They’re not approved to be here, for one thing, and they’re untrained.”
“Then I’ll train them,” Hanzo said without thinking, strengthening his glare on the doctor. “If any of you can get them approved to stay, I’ll train them.”
“To do what, Shimada?” Someone behind him asked. He didn’t dignify them with a glare.
“The Akita are hunting dogs—”
“Exactly, they could harm the ecosystem!”
“—And with training, they could serve as excellent trackers,” Hanzo raised his voice, curling his fists. “I would even go as far as to say that they could outperform your current tracker team.”
This earned him a few murmurs and curious glances, a scoff of disbelief here and there. Hanzo stared Dr. Khalil down, daring them to prove him wrong. He would happily welcome such a challenge, anything to prove himself to these holier-than-thou assholes—
“I’ll forward your proposal to the bosses.” Dr. Khalil cleared their throat, looking Hanzo up and down with a hint of disgust. It bubbled something vile in Hanzo’s stomach. “It’ll be laughed off, but I’ll humour you, Shimada.”
It was better than nothing, Hanzo let out a long breathe and quirked his lips up into a smile that was too sharp, too cunning to be friendly. It cooled the air around them, freezing them down to the bone.
“Give me six months, and they’ll show you otherwise.”

Ask me for the Moon
Pairing(s): McHanzo
Rating: T
Summary: Jesse's been tracking this werewolf for a while, so he decides to ask for help from another hunter. Hopefully, the other hunter doesn't figure out Jesse himself is a werewolf.
Read on Ao3
Author’s Note: More Werewolves, okay? Okay. Title comes from a phrase which basically means asking an impossible request.
~Tip me with Tea~
Jesse’s lived in this town for about a year now. It’s a tiny little hamlet tucked deep inside a thick forest, perfect for a Hunter like him. Dense forests attracted all sorts of creatures, so there was never a shortage of work. Just last week there had been a Wendigo harassing a group of hikers. And Jesse wasn’t the only hunter to have the same idea. He met the other hunter briefly recently while stopping by the convenience store, an attractive Japanese man a little older then Jesse himself named Hanzo. It was nice to know that if Jesse needed backup, he’d have it.
Which leads to now. Jesse’s been tracking a werewolf in the area, and after a few months without any progress made, it was high time for a new perspective on the case. The only downside is that the other hunter might figure Jesse out and try to hunt him. The anxiety that rises at the thought makes Jesse itch idly at the seam of his prosthetic arm where it’s attached. There is no visible bite scar left on his body, the mark of the curse gone with his lost arm. Jesse still feels the teeth from time to time, a phantom pain he could do without.
His old hunting dog Molly sits next to him in his truck, and her greying face turns back towards him when he growls a little at the ghostly sensation. Jesse just reaches over and scratches her ears, and Molly turns from him again to watch the foliage of the forest pass by. Bringing Molly to meet with Hanzo is a precaution on Jesse’s side, normally a hunter’s dog is trained to detect werewolves. Her being present should clear Jesse’s slate, if Hanzo even suspects him of being a werewolf at the moment. Can’t hurt to be safe.
Soon enough his truck is pulling up to Hanzo’s place. A well kept two story cabin surrounded by thick foliage and trees. Jesse would have nearly missed it if Hanzo hadn’t told him of a carving Hanzo had made in a tree that marked the road to the cabin. Jesse puts his truck in park and clambers out, moving to Molly’s side to let her out before approaching the porch.
Jesse has to turn back to look for Molly when she isn’t immediately at his side, his companion standing tense and alert next to the wheel well of his truck. The reason for her nervousness is easily spotted; Hanzo himself owns two dogs it seems. Two dark furred Akitas lay chained to the porch railing, one of which stands at attention while the other is staring at the newcomers warily.
“It’s okay, Ms. Molly.” Jesse reassures his old gal, returning to her and scratching her ears, “They’re jus’ as shy as you.”
To prove his point Jesse goes up to the dogs, trying to tramp down his nervousness. They could easily point out his Lycan status to Hanzo. To his surprise though, the two Akitas slowly wag their tails, pressing their noses to his hand to ask for pets. Jesse happily complies, and that’s where Hanzo finds him moments later. The sound of a throat clearing is what notifies Jesse to Hanzo’s presence, and Jesse grins sheepishly up at the other hunter while he rubs one of the Akita’s bellies. At least Jesse didn’t blush.
“I see you’ve met Katsu and Masa.” the other hunter says by way of greeting before offering Jesse his hand to shake. “It’s good to see you again, Jesse.”
“Good ta see you too, Hanzo.” Jesse rights himself to take Hanzo’s hand and shake it.
More pleasantries are exchanged while they make their way inside Hanzo’s cabin. Molly and Hanzo’s Akita’s follow before settling down on a large doggie bed in the corner of the sitting room. Molly just flops between the other two dogs. It’s cute enough to make Jesse snort.
“Our pups get along well enough, that’s a good sign,” Jesse says as he settles in a chair across from Hanzo in the living room. “If they’ll work together, we should follow suit for sure.”
Hanzo hums in agreement, pulling a map of the forest trails and the nearby town out from a folder he’d retrieved from a locked cabinet. Clipped newspaper articles follow, and Jesse leans in to take a closer look as Hanzo spreads them out. A lot of it is witness sightings Jesse himself is aware of, but the map is new. Hanzo’s circled areas of the sightings, drawing an even larger circle around where all of them have taken place.
“The wolf we’re hunting likes to frequent this area.” Hanzo taps the circle when he sees Jesse staring, “It’s far enough from town that there’s no way any of the residents there is our werewolf, but it means there are a lot of cabins to check out.”
“We can cross both o’ ours off, at least.” Jesse jokes, before getting back down to business, “All the sightings happened at night, full moon, that whole shebang. At least we know we’re dealing with a Moon-shifter.”
Hanzo nods and hums, looking lost in thought. Jesse’s close enough to catch whiffs of Hanzo’s scent every time he moves. Hanzo smells a little bit like the woods after a good storm rolls through, and Jesse has to force himself to stop leaning towards Hanzo to get more of the scent. Jesse’s playing a dangerous game as it is with this hunter, no need to get his libido involved.
“At least we know the wolf will only shift on the full moon, so that brings down the chance of civilian casualties. The only issue is being able to locate the creature by the next full moon.”
Ah. Now, this is where things get harder for Jesse. He shifts in his seat next to Hanzo, trying to make his body language as controlled as possible to hide his unease.
“Can we find it before then somehow?”
Hanzo turns his gaze to Jesse, and he can feel he’s being studied carefully by the other man. Jesse sits taller in his chair under that gaze, trying not to think about how pretty Hanzo’s eyes are. Goddamn, they are though, and Jesse’s sure he can hear his heart hammering.
“It would be a lot safer to confront the wolf when it’s not a wolf, that’s all.” Jesse says, “Huntin’ a wolf in their human form isn’t impossible, jus’ a little harder.”
Hanzo’s turned his gaze from Jesse, staring intently down at the map. Jesse’s confident he’s stepped in it now before Hanzo looks up from the map.
“It would be possible, and admittedly more beneficial.” Hanzo starts. He turns his gaze from Jesse again, looking troubled and apologetic. “I am actually out of town the week the full moon rises, so I would not be able to aid you.”
Well, that makes it much easier. Jesse tries not to let his relief show so plainly.
“I’m sure we can find it before then. Two hunters should easily be able to track a werewolf in such a small area.”
A week later, said hunters have still not located the wolf. On the upside, Jesse got to know Hanzo better at least. Jesse’s hunting partner is a skilled bowman and has a humor drier then the deserts Jesse hails from. It’s only natural for Jesse to be smitten with his archer friend when that week ends.
Jesse even had to fight down the urge to give Hanzo a good bye kiss when he saw Hanzo off on his trip. Heck, Jesse had offered to take care of Katsu and Masa for him, but Hanzo had refused politely. Hanzo already has a dog sitter for them lined up. Part of Jesse almost hopes that the hunt doesn’t end that soon when Hanzo returns home. Any excuse to spend more time with Hanzo would be a blessing.
“I’m in deep, Molls.” Jesse laments to his dog, laying out on the grass in his backyard as he awaits the full moon.
Molly offers no condolences, only flops down next to her master, and yawns. She’ll no doubt be sleeping by the time the moon rises enough to trigger Jesse’s shift. In the meantime Jesse scratches her ears idly, thinking of dark eyes and hands callused from archery. It’s enough to calm him before the shift that when it hits it happens without much issue.
Jesse shakes himself as he raises onto all fours in his wolf form, before trotting off into the dark wood. With Hanzo out of the area, Jesse feels better knowing that he has free reign of the woods without worrying about the other hunter coming across him. Now he can hunt the other werewolf without Hanzo possibly discovering him.
Jesse’s just crossing a small stream when he hears the crash of foliage under a large body. The sounds could mean a million things, could be a lot of different animals, but whatever it is sounds large. A bear could be a likely culprit, but Jesse can’t risk not investigating and letting the other werewolf slip through his fingers again.
Jesse stalks through the foliage quiet as he can, following the noise. The noises double back the way Jesse came, heading back towards Jesse’s cabin. With that realization, Jesse treads more carefully.
Jesse almost gets right up to his backyard before he realizes the noises have stopped. He stays stock still, crouched in the bushes, listening. Not even Molly safe and sound in the cabin is making a sound, and Jesse is grateful for his hindsight in taking her back inside.
Jesse listens and waits for another minute before he rights himself, the trail is apparently cold, and he’s chased it to its end. It’s in the middle of him turning back that a huge form comes crashing into him. They both roll with the force of it before Jesse is flung clean through a small tree. The noise it makes is like a thunder crack, and Jesse shakes off the twigs and debris as he rounds on his assailant with a snarl.
It’s the other werewolf, and if it weren’t for Jesse’s heightened senses, he probably wouldn’t have even seen the other wolf aside from their glowing eyes. They’re smaller than Jesse, sleeker, with black fur that’s mottled grey around the muzzle.
They circle each other, waiting for the other to make their move. The other wolf makes a move first, lunging for Jesse once more. Jesse’s prepared for the attack this time, getting under the wolf and tossing them aside. Jesse takes the opportunity to pounce, pinning the other wolf to the forest floor.
Jesse’s about to go for the throat and fix this werewolf issue once and for all when he catches the scent of a summer storm rolling through the woods. Jesse keeps his teeth from the other wolf’s jugular to chase the smell, sniffing loudly between them both before he backs off of the wolf in shock.
“Hanzo?!”
Confusion then recognition flickers over the other wolf— Hanzo’s— face.
“…Jesse. You…”
“Yeah.” Jesse looks sheepish, sits back down on the forest floor. “You too, huh?”
“Yes.” Hanzo rights himself and plops down across from Jesse. “This complicates things.”
“Oh?”
“Do not misunderstand me.” Jesse must not have hidden his disappointment from Hanzo all that well. “I do not mean anything bad by that. It's just that the hunt we’re on cannot go on, now that we know who the other werewolf is.”
“Not quite what we expected, huh?” Even with a muzzle, Jesse’s crooked smile is there.
Hanzo laughs in reply, short rough chuffs. Jesse finds he likes all variants of Hanzo’s laugh. Jesse has to keep his tail from wagging.
“No, not at all.” Hanzo settles down more comfortably. “But I admit, I’m glad it turned out this way.”
“Me too.” Jesse drums his paw pads against the earth. “So. Would you like ta go out for coffee?”
“Are you asking me on a date, not moments after you found out I was a Lycan?” Hanzo tilts his head, amusement in his voice.
“To be fair, ya only figured out I was one moments ago too.” Jesse grins in response.
“This is very true.” Hanzo does that chuff laugh again. “I think I will take you up on your offer. Coffee after tonight would be great if that would work for you.”
“If your shift is anything like mine, we should make it a breakfast date.” Jesse finally lets his tail wag. “I know I’m practically a starved man when the sun rises.”
“It’s a date then.” Hanzo smiles, a big razor-sharp smile, but to Jesse it’s still beautiful.
“Wonderful.” Jesse grins a big pointy smile of his own. “Last one to your backyard buys?”
“That’s a little childish, don’t you think?” Hanzo raises an eyebrow before rising to his feet, looking down at Jesse and tilting his head once more.
“Aw, that’s not— Hey, where are ya going?!” Jesse barks when Hanzo turns away from him.
“I believe it’s called a head start,” Hanzo calls back with a laugh as he trots into the darkness.
Jesse scrambles up to his feet to give chase and the forest echoes with their shared laughter.

love in a time of social media part one. shance. eventual nc-17. alternate universe. lance is the king of shitposts and selfies. shiro is an artist who loves his dog and fatalistic humor. somehow, they fall in love. warning! underage drinking and casual use of marijuana
.
They meet online.
Specifically, they meet on tumblr. Shiro is an artist of middling popularity and Lance is a shitposter of the highest caliber. Shiro follows Lance months before Lance follows him; indeed, Lance is unaware of Shiro's work until Shiro @'s him in a small comic.
'I couldn't resist,' Shiro types below the image. 'Thank you for the inspiration, @lances-a-lot.'
Shiro—@white_iron—has a simple art style and a sharp sense of humor that makes Lance laugh out loud. He reblogs the comic, telling his followers to check it out, and proceeds to creep on Shiro's blog. Lance's first stop is Shiro's small about section.
Hello! My name is Shiro. I am a post-grad history student and I spend my limited free time walking my dog or doodling. art tag doodles photography
Shiro's blog consists mainly of his artwork. Occasionally, Shiro will also post real-life pictures of his dog, a beautiful black and white akita with bright eyes and a dopey smile. There aren't any pictures of Shiro himself. Lance—who takes roughly a thousand selfies every day—comments on this oddity to Blue, his enormous gray long-hair.
Blue blinks at him.
"My curiosity has been piqued," Lance replies primly.
Blue blinks her big gold eyes at him again.
"Enough of your judgement!" Lance over-dramatizes. "I can follow who I want!"
Shiro's blog is twenty-four pages of self-produced content that Lance blazes through in less than an hour. There are no reblogs. Lance nearly twitches at the restraint and—after a moment—decides to check if Shiro's likes are public.
"Jackpot!" Lance crows when the page loads.
Shiro's likes are a riot of memes and shit-posts. Art references and how-to's. Nerdy history jokes. Links to academic articles. Male fitspo. Healthy recipes, juice cleanse tips, and over-indulgent foodie pics. NSFW gifs of twinks writhing open-mouthed on rumpled sheets. Pictures of space and nature. Lots of dogs. Several of Lance's selfies. More than one necromancy pun. If it is at all possible to fall in love with someone based on their likes, Lance does it.
Lance's infinite scrolling comes to a halt at half past one, when his one of his many phone alarms notifies him of the time. Lance groans, closes his browser, and hauls his butt out of his narrow bed. It takes him a couple minutes to find an acceptably clean pair of skinny jeans and an unwrinkled sweater; he hasn't done laundry for several weeks.
"After lab," Lance tells Blue as he wriggles out of his worn sweats into his socially acceptable denim. "I'll do a load tonight."
Blue flicks her tail at him, a rude gesture that Lance returns with one of his own. Blue sends him baleful glance.
"Don't look at me like that," Lance says even as he plants a kiss between Blue's mismatched ears. She lost half of her left ear in a fight before the shelter picked her off the street. "You started it."
Blue meows loudly and bats Lance's nose.
"Okay, okay, you're right. I started it." Lance presses one more kiss on his cat's skull. "Have fun bird-watching. I'll see you later."
Then—with his good-byes said—Lance grabs his notebook-laden satchel, and is out the door.
.
Lance's lab is as much of a challenge as it always is. Lance is good at math—numbers and variables are easy—but his brain refuses to wrap around the concepts of physics. It's a small miracle that Pidge is his lab partner; without her, Lance is certain he would fail.
"You're a lifesaver," Lance gushes as they leave the old building. "Let me buy you pizza to show my gratitude."
"I told Matt I'd have dinner with him," says Pidge. "His roommate is going through some sort of clean eating phase and it's driving him nuts."
"He can come," Lance says. Then, less magnanimously, "But he has to get his own slice."
Pidge rolls her eyes as she texts her older brother. Lance shoots a text to Hunk, who responds with a single thumbs up emoji. They all meet at less than ten minutes later at the off-campus pizzeria that sells by the slice. Lance gets three for himself and two for Pidge; Matt, who is the only person over the age of twenty-one, covertly buys a pitcher of beer that they pour into their small, plastic water cups.
"Sweet, sweet, processed goodness," Matt half-cries as he chews, his mouth filled with cheese, pepperoni, and grease. "How I missed you."
Lance would be more sympathetic to Matt's dilemma if the man hadn't embarrassed him in a game of beer pong at a sorority the week before. Lance can't prove it, but he knows in his heart of hearts that Matt cheated. Nobody beats Lance at beer pong, okay. Nobody.
"That bad?" Pidge grins.
"You have no idea," Matt bemoans. "Like—Takashi's a great dude, don't get me wrong—but when I found him on Craig's List I was more worried about being murdered in my sleep than I was about weird diet habits. Turns out I should have been more worried about the diet habits. Our fridge is filled with kale. Kale, Kit-Kat. From the farmer's market."
"Kale is really good for you," Hunk interjects.
"That's what Takashi said," Matt mutters. "I don't know how much longer I can go on like this."
"Hasn't it only been three days—"
"An eternity—"
Lance laughs at Matt's plight and, once dinner is finished and the four of them part ways, he takes out his phone to tweet about the roundabout retribution.
Lance @lancesalot #revenge is best served blanched. or in a smoothie. #kale #healthyliving #karma
.
It's a little past nine when Lance returns to his apartment. His roommate, Rolo, and his ambiguously defined girlfriend/partner-in-crime, Nyma, are sitting on the couch sharing a joint. A bag of popcorn is ready on the battered coffee table and the television is playing an old nineties buddy-cop flick.
"Hey," Rolo says, smoke curling upwards from his mouth. "Wanna join?"
"Nah." Lance turns down the proffered joint with a shrug. "Gotta take my laundry down. You feed Blue?"
"Like she'd let me forget."
Blue—who is perched on the windowsill—releases a single, plaintive meow. She has no problems letting anyone know what she wants and when she wants it, especially when it comes to being fed.
"Thanks man."
"De nada."
It doesn't take Lance long to gather his dirty clothing and stuff it into his hamper. He takes it all to the basement, throws a few loads in, and settles into one of the old armchairs that have accumulated in the corner. He knows that he should read ahead for his classes, but the siren song of social media grips him. An internal debate rages inside him for all of three seconds before he opens his tumblr account.
Lance barely feels the twinge of guilt.
There are several asks—all anonymous, as per usual—and one unread message. Lance is a little surprised by the latter; after a few weird encounters, he changed his setting so that he could only receive messages from people he followed. He clicks on the conversation first.
white_iron Thanks for the follow! I'm really flattered. You're one of my favorite blogs.
Lance smiles at the message.
lances-a-lot no problem!!! ur art was super funny i laughed at everything pretty sure my cat thinks i'm crazy now
After hitting send, Lance plugs in his chunky headphones into the audio jack. He has a new chillwave playlist that Pidge gave him, but he knows that if he doesn't give Tycho his full attention Pidge may murder him. So instead, Lance pulls up his trusted Rihanna compilation and double clicks on the first song. He bops his head in time with the beat and opens his asks, quickly answering his anons.
Several chart-toppers later, a small ping interrupts Rihanna's plea for the dj to turn the music up. Lance looks at the vertical line of icons on the side of the page and sees that he has another message from Shiro. Lance opens the conversation immediately and reads:
white_iron My dog already knows I'm crazy.
white_iron sent a photo post.
A small preview image has been loaded into the conversation. It is a cartoon version of Shiro's akita, her expression morphed into one of extreme judgement. Her eyebrows—twin dots of white on her dark face—are low over her big eyes and her ruff is fattened comically around her muzzle. Lance cannot help but laugh at the exaggerated accuracy and immediately reblog it.''
lances-a-lot OMG THATS FANTASTIC
THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT BLUE DOES
white_iron Stare into the depths of your decrepit soul and find you wanting?
lances-a-lot haha, yes! blue acts like i dont spoil her rotten shes such a princess
white_iron I definitely know how that goes. Bee has three dog beds, but she insists on sleeping in my bed or in my roommate's.
lances-a-lot blue has peed in every. single. bed i bought for her i stopped trying after awhile it was getting to be an expensive exercise in futility
white_iron Two words. Dog toys.
Lance talks to Shiro for the next couple of hours while his laundry finishes. Mostly, they swap stories about their pets and commiserate about their less than desirable—if not inadvertently hilarious—behavior. Lance even tells Shiro about how he rescued Blue. In turn, Shiro talks about the process he had to go through to adopt Bee. Shiro mentions that Bee is a service dog; what for, he does not say.
Don't be that asshole, Lance reminds himself as the topic wanes. His comfort is more important than your curiosity.
Lance is having such a good time talking to Shiro that he barely notices midnight pass. In fact, if it weren't for the enormous, jaw-cracking yawn that his body produces, Lance would not have noticed at all.
lances-a-lot dude i just noticed what time it was like i could seriously talk about blue forever but laundry sleep ADULTING i have calc at 8 am, ugh kill me now
white_iron Tell me about it. I have to TA an 8 a.m. class.
There is a small pause. Lance gnaws on his bottom lip as he watches the ellipsis that indicates typing flicker in and out of existence.
white_iron Talk to you tomorrow?
Lance bites down harder on his lip. Normally, he would send back a quick affirmation before logging off, but his interaction with Shiro feels different than the interactions he's had in the past. Their chemistry is undeniable and their conversation never felt flat or stilted. Yet while Lance knows he's been lowkey flirting with Shiro, he cannot be sure if Shiro has been flirting back.
Fuck it, Lance thinks as he gathers all his courage and sets his fingers back on the keyboard. He can feel how warm his cheeks are. Just do it.
lances-a-lot its a date ;)
After he sends the message, Lance closes his laptop and jumps off the armchair. He feels jittery and unsure, yet also oddly hopeful that maybe this time—for the first time—his interest won't be a mistake.
