hey there, I love this blog! I was wondering if there have ever been shoujo magazines dedicated to horror/mystery/suspense?
Totally! Mostly from Akita Shoten and Asahi Sonorama rather than from the Big 3 of manga publishing, though. Probably the most well-known are:
Mystery Bonita (still publishing, runs Children of the Whales and ran Bride of Demos)
Suspiria and Suspiria Mystery (discontinued, ran Vampire Princess Miyu)
Halloween (discontinued)
Nemuki (still publishing as Nemuki+, runs Hyakkiyakosho)
Most of these came out in the 80s following the horror movies boom, ergo titles like “Halloween” and “Suspiria”. In general, they run shojo manga in the mystery/suspense/horror category combined with manga that feature supernatural or occult elements, fantasy stories (and a bit of sci-fi), or just manga that are a bit strange and mysterious. Occult themes were popular in Japan through the 80s and 90s as the end of the millennium approached, so these magazines also rode that wave.
