Shadow of Night Read Along Ch21
‘No offense taken, Goody Alsop. But if you take this matter to your elders, Diana’s identity will be known across London.’ Matthew stood. ‘I can’t allow that.’
‘Every witch in the city has already heard about your wife. News travels quickly here, no small thanks to your friend Christopher Marlowe,’ Goody Alsop said, craning her neck to meet his eyes. ‘Sit down, Master Roydon. My old bones no longer bend that way.’
To my surprise, Matthew sat.
Matthew is throwing his cranky weight around with the subtelty of a bulldozer but Goody Alsop is having none of it. She is the boss. You show him Goody.

The Congregation should really be afraid of Diana because there’s no way the living embodiment of the Book of Life is scared of them

Part Twenty-Three
Summary: Baldwin Montclair had a string of ex girlfriends, a single child, and a lifetime longer than most people could dream of to make all kinds of mistakes. His family knew one which kept coming out of the woodwork to irritate him every other century.

Miriam Sheppard was glowing. A beaming smile plastered across her face, she strolled down the street arm in arm with a tall man with curly brown hair. Martin scrutinised him; Betrand was dressed well in a grey linen tunic over a brown one with longer sleeves, grey linen pants, and a thick leather belt with loops for worker's tools that marked him out as a craftsman.
..Geranium and pomegranate..plum and galbanum...
...calcite... must be a stonemason...
The fact that their scents had mixed confirmed his worst fears.
'You have mated.'
Miriam shook her head.
'Bertand is Clermont adjacent, and I do not wish to hear it.'
Betrand was smiling, his bright blue eyes crinkling at the corners.
'Betrand Volt, a pleasure to meet you.'
'Martin Bouchard. If you hurt this woman I will ensure that her alibi stands up in court'
'I will hold you to that' Bertrand laughed.
As they walked across the courtyard Martin leant closer to Miriam.
‘I am happy for you. Truly.’
Miriam smiled. ‘Thank you.’

Miriam and Bertrand shared a glance as Philippe’s explanation of the situation wound down.
Miriam placed a hand on Bertrand’s arm. Betrand took a breath, bracing himself.
‘It appears that Hugh is serious about his intention to stay in his relationship with Fernando’
‘Relationship’ Philippe scoffed. ‘The boy was blinded by lust. He has no common sense.’
‘Emotions rarely do’ Bertrand said, carefully. Miriam leaned forward, wide-eyed and serious.
'Hugh ran away to another country to be with the man he has chosen to love. I do not believe that ambushing him and forcing him to return to France without Fernando will ease his feelings on the matter.'
Philippe sneered and raised an eyebrow.
'He is a De Clermont. He will recover.'
'I do not think he will,' Betrand leant forward as well. 'Hugh is a sensitive soul. You may feel entitled to his obedience as his father, but if you attempt to force this situation in your favour, it will destroy him.'
For the first time in weeks, some of the fire drained from Philippe's eyes. He glanced at Godfrey and Baldwin, who nodded.
'If we push Hugh too firmly, we will push him away' Godfrey said, quietly.
'Fernando may have his uses' Baldwin chimed in.
'The son of a cook?!'
'He is highly educated,' Baldwin started counting on his fingers, 'He has an eloquent, measured wit-'
'-he is agreeable enough that you can send him to negotiate with your enemies if you think them beneath a "proper" Clermont emissary,' Martin added. 'And if one of them takes offence to that, they may do him in. Hugh's bond with his mate will be broken and someone else being responsible diverts the blame from yourself.'
Miriam and Bertrand glared at Martin as Philippe, Baldwin and Godfrey shared a thoughtful glance.

Godfrey had the decency to wait until dinner to start gushing over Miriam.
'Your foundational work on sulphur compounds has been invaluable in my own research'
'I am very pleased to hear it' Miriam beamed.
'I was wondering..is it true you contributed to the Chrysopoeia of Cleopatra?'
Even Philippe looked up from his plate.
'Sadly our experiments failed' Miriam's smile soured a little, a bitter twist at one end. 'Lead cannot be transmuted into gold.'
'Even the witches have failed' said Martin. A coven of twenty, the elements represented by five a piece. By the time they were finished ten were catatonic, four were dead and the others had been drained of their powers to such a degree that they never fully recovered them.
'A pity' Philippe deadpanned.
'Perhaps in another century' Godfrey said, hopefully raising his cup a little in mimicry of a toast.
Miriam's smile was clear and genuine.
'Perhaps.'
________________________________________________________________
Baldwin had once made the mistake of grabbing a book out of Hugh's hands while he was reading because he wanted to get him to focus on him instead. The look that Hugh had turned on him haunted him. He was wearing a similar expression now.
'What is this?' Hugh spat.
Bertrand held his hands up defensively. 'We are here purely as observers.' His eyes flicked over pointedly at Philippe, and the slightest hint of tension eased out of Hugh's aggressive stance.
Matthew had shoved himself in front of his older brother as soon as they spotted the group wading through crowded street. Fernando had tried to do the same but Matthew had sandwiched him against Hugh's side. At Bertrand's words, he stopped growling under his breath, but his height and glare were drawing attention.
'Come' Philippe managed a stiff nod, 'Let us discuss things somewhere private.'
'Let's not'
'A compromise' Martin gestured to a spot a few meters away from them where the wall of the Great Mosque rose skyward. 'We reconvene over there; you stand, we sit, and if you do not wish to listen to what your father has to say you may escape as you like."
Hugh and Fernando shared a glance, then nodded hesitantly.
They strode across to the wall and crouched against it, shielding their eyes from the noon sun awkwardly with their hands. Matthew, Hugh and Fernando loomed over them, careful not to helpfully block out the sky.
The silence dragged for a moment.
Philippe cleared his throat.
'I have never approved of this...union-'
'Four hundred and thirty-one years and you have made that quite clear'
'-however I am prepared to overlook my feelings on the matter if you would please come home.'
'No.'
Philippe looked stunned. Hugh's eyes were wet with unshed tears but he held his head high.
'I am a De Clermont, but I am Fernando's mate first, and last. I belong by his side. We will not be tolerated for appearance' sake.'
Philippe glanced at Matthew, contemplating. The young man flinched, following his father's train of thought.
Martin's eyes narrowed.
'"Family assassin" works both ways'
Everyone whipped round and stared at Martin. Philippe was the first to recover; he looked back at his eldest son, his hand firmly grasping Fernando's.
Philipe sighed, went to stand, remembered he wasn't supposed to, and remained crouched.
'What would be an acceptable compromise?'
'We wish to be a scion' Hugh watched Philippe mull it over, and relaxed a little again when his father nodded.
'I require your services to the family to continue. You are my negotiator, after all'
'I can do that'
'We will provide regular reports on subjects of concern' Fernando chimed in, as the group got to their feet. Philippe nodded his head again and clapped a hand on Fernando and Hugh's shoulders.
'Come! Let us work out the details.'
Author’s Notes
My face cast for Bertrand is Harry Taurasi (formerly Cesare Taurasi). He played Piero De Medici in The Borgias, and Bertrand de Fortunesa in Young Dracula.
Miriam’s scent: Galbanum and pomegranate
Bertrand’s scent: Geranium and plum
I found a site online that said that Volt is an extinct French surname (it still exists in Egypt and the USA) but now I can't find it again.
Philippe, in my opinion, is a borderline narcissist sociopath who absolutely obsessed with control. Apparently it's crucial to remain calm when talking through issues with a narcissist; use a lot of "I" phrases, like "I think", "I feel", ect.
Martin knows damn well that Philippe picked Fernando to babysit Matthew when they came to deal with the account because if he'd sent Baldwin it'd be on sight, and he was trying to keep Hugh and Godfrey around for the important missions.
The Chrysopoeia of Cleopatra (or Kleopatra) was an single page of alchemical text authored by Cleopatra the Alchemist (not to be confused with the famous Egyptian ruler). It depicts the alchemical transmutation of lead into silver, and is found within an 10th/11th century manuscipt in the Marciana Library, Venice. Cleopatra the Alchemist was alledgedly the pseudonym of an unknown author, or group of authors, trying to transmute lead into precious metals. In my headcanon Miriam was part of the unknown group.
It is possible to turn lead into gold; however, you need to use a particle accelerator and absolutely ENORMOUS amounts of energy in order to do so. Even then, the amount of gold you would end up with makes the experiment a massive financial waste. Here’s an interesting article about it.
The Great Mosque (or Mosque-Cathedral) of Córdoba is officially called the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption. It was built on the orders of Abd ar-Rahman I in 785 CE, allegedly atop the site of a demolished Visigothic church.

Shadow of Night Read Along Ch4
‘Do not play games with me,’ he said shortly. ‘You do not want me as an enemy, Widow Beaton.'
Matthew and Diana are trying to get a witch to help with her magic.
When asking nicely doesn't work, just look mean and threaten. Grrrrr
Although sadly, Diana's magic is as temperamental as Matthew is.

Part Fifty-Five
Summary: Baldwin de Clermont manages to upset an ancient hag. He wakes up.. different.
Also on Ao3
'Domenico and Gerbert are awake, I take it?' Ysabeau strolled past Marthe in the dining room busily setting out everything for breakfast.
'Yes. He woke up shortly before six. He is out hunting now.'
'Ah, I thought I heard the bell.'
Ysabeau made herself comfortable on the couch with a copy of the morning paper.
'Baldwin was very dissapointed' Marthe glanced aside at Ysabeau, and the two shared a smile.
'Well, we can't have everything...' Ysabeau trailed off, looking blankly at the wall opposite her. 'What on earth is that sound?'
Marthe sidled over to the dining room window and peeked out.
'That would be Gerbert. The wheelchair is ablaze.’
________________________________________________________________
Eventually it was time to say goodbye. Domenico begrudgingly accepted a farewell hug from each of the twins, and gingerly patted Hugo on the head.
‘Are you sure you can’t stay a little bit longer?’ Becca asked, hanging off Gerbert’s arm. He shook her off gently, and gave her a gentle squeeze on the shoulder.
‘No, I’m afraid I must go.’ Gerbert’s expression turned sour. ‘I have a territory to...tidy up.’
‘You can do it!’ Pip punched the air with both hands, then wrapped himself around Gerbert’s legs. Becca attached herself to Gerbert on the other side, and the twins squished him tightly. Gerbert let out a small huffy chuckle.
‘Remember not to keep in touch’ Baldwin said, as everyone moved towards the taxi cabs waiting patiently in the middle of the drive.
‘Uncle Baldwin!’
‘Sorry, sorry’
‘I will...send you something from Venice’ Domenico muttered, smiling awkwardly as the twins let out a cheer, jumping excitedly and hugging him tightly.
‘Adieu’ Ysabeau smiled cooly as Marthe put Domenico and Gerbert’s bags into the trunks of the cabs. ‘Let us hope you remember the lessons you have learned during your...impromptu holiday.’
‘..Quite’ Domenico said. Gerbert said nothing.
‘Goodbye Grunkle Ger! Goodbye Uncle Dom!’
The twins chased the cars down the driveway, laughing and waving as they slipped beyond the front gate and disappeared down the road.
