Tbh it sucks because Friends is so special to me but it tanked, actually got canceled unlike the other gens, the arcade game and merch sales weren't doing it so they tried to rework the series for the next gen

Aikatsu on Parade and all it's merchandise was partly an attempt to scrape up more money for Planet's release but??? I don't think it worked??? the first couple episodes mention all these really cool ideas about their idol world and then nothing came of it, it was a cute concept but I really think they just fell reaaally under budget and tried to skate by hoping nobody noticed

ever since Stars things have just been kind of mismanaged 😭 like why is the majority of their merch acrylic character stands?? you are a trading card rhythm game for 8 year olds 😭

I LOVE how diverse the music is!!!!! all the "standard idol stuff" really stands out too imo. Signalize was one of my favorites from the start, it just hits so different, most idol anime start with that extra sparkly guitar happy type of song but the instrumental for signalize was so unique, I always thought it was a bold choice for a show like that their rock music is so good. like so so gooddddd

I swear out of the like 700 songs of this series there are maybe 6 I don't enjoy?? ALSO WOW THATS A LOT

Same about the animation, OG s2-onward & Friends was great!!! I also love in the movie when Ichigo performs Kagayaki no Etude, there's a slow spinning scene when she's talking on stage about what the song means to her and every couple seconds it switches from 2d to cg angles and it's so seamless, I love it 😭💗

I think Planet's cg was also beautiful, I don't have much of an attatchment to the season but the character designs look really nice, good fluffy hair physics, and they've TOTALLY perfected the in-the-dark glowy look by then!!

another thing most of the fandom agreed on, Stars feeling kind of uncanny.. and the auras kept covering idols art certain parts so that's why they changed all the arches early on, they ACTUALLY got written complaints from kids 😭😂

I always wanted to see an idol with no type or a couple!!! Before Kaguya was introduced there was a huge theory going around that she was actually a Sexy/Cool type and since pairs were the point of Friends, we thought we were finally getting double type girls

I also wished the concept of my coords was used in more than that one ichigo gen ep, where you mix up brandless pieces, one of my favorite things to do is mix and match outfits in the ds games so I was hoping to see like idk maybe soleil could split their PR coords together one time or something??? idk would have been cool though!!

Ugh I do agree with you on the merchandise. Like I can’t play any of the card-based games because America so the cards would basically be glorified trading cards. This might be my doll collector brain talking, but why didn’t they make fashion dolls? I know they did for Friends but they didn’t expand on the concept at all, they just made two dolls. I want to see the girls in their basic coords and then fashion packs for each brand, like a set of multiple Futuring Girl rares or just one PR. I would have gone absolutely apeshit for that. It would also allow for mixing and matching, so maybe it could have tied into the show a lot more like with the concept of PR mixing you brought up! I feel like most PRs in units work pretty well together so I’d like to see the mix ups.

Yeah, I really do not care for planet. I think it really didn’t work, and was an awful lot like PriPara when it didn’t need to be! While the cg is admittedly gorgeous, I also feel like it tried to be so ✨aesthetic✨ all of a sudden instead of being bright and colorful like it’s always been! But maybe I just hate change.

I’ve heard that a lot of people find Raki to be a Mary Sue and hate the way she copied the designs of others. I don’t know enough about her to form an opinion, really, but what do you think?

I love the fact that the kids complained during Stars. They may be kids, but they have standards!!

I think double type idols would be super cool and really flesh out the world. Tbh I think there could be a few idols that could be double typed with only a few minor tweaks (I always thought Mikuru was a pop/sexy idol tbh). One thing I think would be interesting is to see how brands would react to it. Brands appreciate dedication, so would dual type idols have a hard time getting PRs because the pure-type brands would worry about being thrown aside? Cool conflict imo.

Now I have to ask, are the ds games any good? Are they able to be played as someone who speaks absolutely no Japanese? I’ve never really thought about getting one of the games before because I have no clue how they work

You Steal the Boys’ Clothes

Something I’ve been thinking of for a while.

Lucifer

It was rare the eldest was without his cape, as everything seemed to be a formal event and he must be dressed to impress. Being dressed to impress, however, means being clean so he gets it cleaned from time to time

Lucifer is a very organized, practical man. Constantly towing the line of obsessive for the sake of orderliness.

He knows where his cape should be, and that it’s not there

With a demon’s-only screech that warns Mammon to stretch his calves and run, Lucifer hunts down the three most likely suspects to interrogate them (Mammon, Satan, and Belphegor).

He tries to get a two-for-one by dragging Mammon into the study where Satan sits smugly with a book (because he knows he didn’t do it but MAN is he enjoying this!)

Imagine surprising not one, but THREE demons when you come shuffling down the hall with a Lucifer’s cape wrapped around you like a blanket.

It whispers and it drags and it absolutely DROWNS you.

Very charming. Ethereal, almost like some sort of wedding wear

Lucifer would’ve never imagined you’d be the culprit, and now his poor brain is trying to save and process the idea of you looking so sleepy-happy in his clothes

And the ex-angel falls all over again.

He catches the little cheek nuzzle and way you bunch it around your body, a foot poking out not to get tangled

Satan and Mammon will probably die laughing instead of at his hands, but Lucifer could really care less

Lucifer idly wonders where you’d curled up that he totally missed you, and escorts you gently but red-faced to your room

Satan and Mammon tag along, and when they see Lucifer come out with his cape they can only deduce he put you to bed.

Mammon

With no homework to do and some money in the bank, Mammon was ready to spend the weekend tearing up the town with you!

He was fresh out of the shower and mostly dressed, searching feverishly for his beloved white and brown jacket

Mammon wasn’t the cleanest person by nature (hello, money hoarder and collector of interesting/valuable things) so he tidied up as he went

As he started to suspect one of his little brothers was holding the jacket for ransom, he sent out a group text asking about it

There were several typical smart-ass responses (Lucifer, Asmo, and Satan) and he was in the middle of a snark fight when you showed up at his door somewhere between bashful and chill

In HIS jacket

Mammon’s brain shuts down.

HIS baby in HIS jacket? HELL YEAH! OH GOD, IT’S TOO PERFECT!

FIEND, TAKING HIS HEART!

“It’s kind of a human thing,” you explain. “There is a one-jacket fee among couples. Usually it’s a hoodie.” you tease, reluctant to shrug it off, “But this seems to be your only jacket so I guess I could give it back.”

It’s very subtle, but he’s worn that jacket for centuries and no amount of detergent can disguise the scent that makes his heart skip a beat

Something about the smell of your skin and a hint of his has him purring

You hold the jacket out to him. Mammon wraps his fingers around it and swings it around until he’s holding it over one shoulder

The yellow takes over in his eyes a little more. Gets a little brighter and intense.

“You want to take anything else off?” he husks playfully

Your day out turns into staying in and Mammon is happy to trade his jacket for a shirt you can sleep in (like, forever. It’s fine. Whatever, dummy.)

Leviathan

It was actually really hard to steal Levi’s clothes because he lived in his hoodie and turtleneck. His RAD uniform was really just for show and that wasn’t what you were looking for, anyways. You didn’t want to chill in uniform.

He was very particular about his merch because certain shirts were collector’s items and he didn’t like people messing with his folding patterns

You went to Asmo with your dilemma and he found it absolutely ADORABLE. It was almost enough to make him jealous, really

Somehow (Asmo being Asmo?), the fifth- born was able to swipe one of the green button-ups Levi wore under his RAD uniform

His first thought was to alter the garment to make it fit you (matching outfits? YES!) but Levi would probably kill him. His big bro hated shopping for clothes unless he HAD to have them.

Asmo gets the bright idea to magically/temporarily alter the fabric to fit you. Maybe Levi will like it so much he’ll just give you a shirt! 💖 (Or get some fucking outside time and go buy more shirts!)

Levi catches his own scent somewhere outside of the door and his brain goes off. He hits the pause button at lightning speed.

No one else smells like him! They haven’t shared bath products in centuries! He already finished his laundry so what’s happening?!

His first thought is: Mammon broke into my room while I was in the bathroom and stole something to pawn!

Levi doesn’t even think to take inventory of his stuff, barging out of his room to hunt down his big brother

He’s yelling and whining before he even sees him. Then he sees you. In his shirt.

All the angry words die in his throat as the absolute mortification and adoration sets his face on fire

SO KAWAII! It basically makes up for your normie-ness.

Levi’s stuck standing there, blushing his head off and unable to say anything as his fists shake with joy and nervousness

He gets a nosebleed. One of his brothers are laughing at him.

You guide him back to his room to take care of him, Levi lets you and becomes very fascinated with the idea of you in his clothes .Lots of petting and figuring out you look DOUBLY MEGA CUTE when the magic wears off and you’re just in a pool of fabric.

He’s totally down for matching clothes and definitely lets you keep the one you’re wearing.

Satan

His wardrobe is very...interesting...to say the least

Colors and personal combinations aside, Satan actually has a very smart wardrobe. Lots of basics and easy layers.

You can’t steal his signature green sweater or the blazer he seems to live in, so you settle for an emerald knit sweater that has a bit of a v-neck/university feel to it

It takes Satan a while to notice, as he’s buried in a book. You two tend to gravitate towards each other and just enjoy a cozy, companionable silence

He’s just finished a book and is debating cracking open one from the stack to his left when the color catches his eye

The smooth, sly comment dies on his lips when he realizes he likes the damn thing because IT’S HIS

You look very cozy and warm. It’s a very ‘cuddle me’ kind of look.

Perhaps you could warm his lap? Or give his poor hands a rest under the hem?

Very cheeky and clever. Grabs you by the sleeve of it just to ‘answer his curiosity about whether it matched his nails’.

Does he have a cute university student kink? If he didn’t, he does now?

There’s a 50-50 chance of you guys having sex.

Will definitely want to hold you and cuddle you close, petting the fabric and whispering compliments into it.

If you don’t already have a business/academic attire, Satan will definitely suggest a few pieces because YES. This is a thing he loves and it DOES things to him.

Asmodeus

He’s the type to let you think you stole something

Probably stages what he wants you to steal just so you take it

Honestly, I could just see him dumping some of his clothes on you because you’re dating now and this is a cute thing he read about!

It’s super likely he’s into couple outfits or coordinating outfits, so he’s either spent time in his closet pre-planning or asked you to try on a million things just because

This cutie pie purposely orders THE BIGGEST thing he can find so you can both fit in it at the same time

Asmo loves you to pieces no matter what, but seeing you in his clothes makes him squeal and hit a note Mammon has threatened to murder him over

Ever dramatic, this is like, THE BEST THING EVER

A MILLION Devilgram posts about it (safe ones, of course)

Do you guys spark a couple’s trend and spade of lover’s stealing each other’s clothes to snap a victory pic? Maybe

Probably fake faints at the sheer glory of you in HIS bomb ass clothes. Definitely fans himself

Spoils you rotten with compliments

This man is weak. “Gorgeous! Smother me.” as he falls back on the bed and gestures to his face

He won’t turn down the idea of sexy times (depends on your libido, comfort, etc.) but sometimes he makes raunchy jokes just to be funny. Smothering could also mean using him like a body pillow (which he’s totally okay with).

You get max cuddles and WILL be the envy of Devilgram

Beelzebub

Beel felt a little guilty for leaving you at the House of Lamentation with his brothers

You guys were supposed to hang out after school but there was an emergency practice. The coach always got pre-game jitters and demanded a few last runs. He showered and ran back to the House, hoping you still had time for him.

He tiptoed quietly into his shared room, unsurprised to find you waiting there for him. You’d been caught in Belphie’s sleepy little aura by the looks of it,

Beelzebub couldn’t help the grin or little hum that made it past his lips. Your eyes were open but he didn’t know if you actually saw him. You looked super cute in his humongous bed though

You were getting sleepier and sleepier, your eyelids getting heavier and heavier. Beel pulled the sheets over you and gentle untangled the arm you managed to latch on to

Maybe waking up to a bit of food would make up for everything! Beel toiled away in the kitchen, making a cute little snack tray for the two of you.

In reality, it could probably feed at least twenty, and he ate at least half of what he prepped.

Beel returned to the room with what he considered a decent amount (scraps, kind of, but enough variety! He tried! It’s the thought that counts!) and was surprised to see his sheets all tangled and half-kicked from the bed

You were wearing his jacket now, passed out and turned into the furry lining that usually went across his shoulders and neck

DId you sleep walk? He was trying to understand how you’d gotten into his jacket

Beel realized it was the first time you’d been in his clothes and it was enough to make his heart melt

Super huge on you, obviously (extra fabric everywhere), but so cute! He could basically swaddle you in his jacket

“They’re a restless sleeper,” Belphie yawned. “I thought it would help them calm down.”

It used to work on Belphie, so Beel could see why he resorted to it

Beel offered his twin some food, sitting carefully on your other side.

He shifted some of the parka fur away from your face, trying to fix your hair and nudge your chin up so your nose wasn’t buried in anything. He stroked your cheek a little, mesmerized by the sight of you and how you felt.

Belphie declined, muttering something about, ‘Stop looking like that and eat your food! Gross!’ before Beel settled for patting your head one last time and eating quietly

Belphegor

He’s another one that’s hard to steal from

You’d think it’d be easy since he sleeps all the time, but Belphie really only wears 10% of the clothes he buys

Yes, he’s a pajama snob and has all things comfy and cozy, but hardly any of them smell like him because he falls asleep anywhere with little issue (no special clothes required!)

You thought about stealing his blue cardigan with the pocket, but he’s always sleeping in it!

Belphie picks up on your train of thought, and the frustration, because you fall asleep thinking about it. Dreaming about coyly stealing his cardigan and being all cute and snuggly in bed

It’s enough to wake him up, shuffle to you, and break your sleep. He flops down on your bed with his cardigan unbuttoned and says ‘climb on’ while patting his chest

You’re obviously sleepy and confused and he loves it. Belphie slides you onto his chest and wraps his arms around you, resting bits of the fabric on your back as you settle into him

It’s not the same but it’s close enough

Would you be offended if he got you cow pajamas so he could snuggle you like his favorite pillow? He falls asleep wondering about the answer

He wakes up to see that Beel has covered the two of you with his favorite blanket.

You in his blanket? Against him? Slowly smelling of him and his clothes? It’s the best thing to fall asleep to.

Makes a joke out of your clothes-stealing quest by stripping one of his pillowcases off and putting you in it like a little sack. You have to stay on his bed now because you’re his pillow and all pillows stay on the bed.

“What? You wanted to smell like me! It’s something I use!“ Belphie defends as you wonder whether or not you like this human pillow thing while he snuggles you.

Since there was so much BS in the fandom today, time to share some love! :)

- @zeta-jane is an absolute godsend of a friend. They are sassy, funny, talkative, energetic and so full of amazing ideas!!! Zeta is always there for me when I need someone to lean on. They’re such a kind friend and they will not hesitate, baitch to fight people who hurt me- probably because they know I’d do the same for them! They’re such good company both online and IRL, and I am blessed to have met them! I am even more blessed to be writing City of Dust and Shadows with them, which has become the longest fic either of us has ever written! We may or may not surpass it with our future collabs, however ;) They are just the coolest person ever and they deserve all the love in the world. I adore them so much!!! TUT

- @mikayu-chan is such a got damn SWEETHEART. They are trying to see the positive side of things, especially after so much fandom drama in the past, and I’m so so proud of them for trying their hardest to live their best life. They have it way too hard and I want to give them a big ole hug and many days of fun!!! They always make me laugh and we have a great time on calls! I’m glad that we see eye-to-eye on so many things and that we continue to teach each other new things all the time!! They are really an irreplaceable friend and such a joy to talk with, to write with, and to laugh with. I love you Chan

- @yuudefensesquad is sUCH A GOOD BEAN who deals with SO MUCH and she just needs a big ole hug and lots of Yuuchan i stg. Caydence is such a funny funky lil nugget and I protecc her with my life okay. Her art? Flawless. Her shitposts? FUCKIN HILARIOUS. Her meta? Super engaging and intriguing! Her bravery? ABOVE US ALL LOL. She is just awesome and I’m glad I forcefully adopted her into my lil family of mikayuu nerds bc it just wouldn’t be the same without her. Caydence ily never stop being you. A lot of shit challenges her irl and everywhere else, but she still keeps her head up and man I really respect her.

- @mikaisatop is MY FRICKIN RIGHT HAND MAN. My SOULMATE. SARAHHH I ADORE YOU. You might be busy rn but I love you so much girl ;__; even though she’s busy I always bother her bc I want her to know I wouldn’t ever forget about her!! I’m so happy we got to collab so much and will continue doing so!! Winter’s Waltz is so much fun to write and I’m so happy she is writing it with me anyways despite such a busy schedule. - @6lilystrings9 IS JUST THE BOMB DOT FUCKIN COM. Lily and I didn’t super duper connect until more recently but omg talking with her is just a freakin BLAST. We always get so hype with each other, even over each other’s fandoms that we aren’t even in!!! Something about the energy in her pulls out the energy in me and we just get GOING lmao. She is so very talented and amazing and a fascinating person all around! I’m so glad we got to hang a bit at KatsuCon in 2017 but I hope we can do that again in the future! I miss her all the time!

- @weirdfairytales is the MAN. THE MYTH. THE LEGEND. Anna is just the biggest definition of a meme I can think of and I LOVE her for it. I’m so glad that we met way back when MikaYuuHell Skype existed and that she thought of the masterpiece that is Cherry Boy one wild night. I’m so glad we continued to be great friends and talk about so many things. I love when our messages get super long cause we just have so many things to say XD Cosplaying Victuuri with her at Katsu was so lit, and I can’t express how much I love her Victuuri fic too!!!

- @hannaadi88 is such. a. sweetheart. I can’t say it enough. Hanna does so much and gets so little I stfg yall need to APPRECIATE HER MORE. Her writing is STUNNING and the projects she makes for this fandom are just outstanding!!! From gift exchanges (I SAID ONS REMIX BEFORE IM SORRY i was wrong XD) to 365 Days of Mika and Yuu, she has put in so much for us constantly! She has also granted us with the lovely fic Scented, and not to mention one of my favorite fics of ALL TIME, Eye of Horus- the Ancient Egypt take on Unwritten!!! And she named it that without knowing my first tattoo is literally the eye of horus! XD I was shook lmfao and I still am. Meeting Hanna was amazing and the day I spent with her and @ihavetobenkyou (who is also a-freaking-MAZING and a big bundle of goodness!!!!!!) is one I’ll never forget. She’s so chill and just gives off this ‘wise’ aura idk why but I just look up to Hanna so much. No matter what she writes I will always support her and you all should too!!!

- @just-another-dream-about-yuu is ONE OF MY FAVORITE HUMANS TO EVER HUMAN. Julia omfg I cannot express how much I love you. TwT Julia is not only one of the most talented artists I have ever seen, but she is so sweet and fun and so full of energy and excitement!! She’s super busy with adulting so she’s not around in the fandom a whole lot but I always make sure to include her bc I won’t let her leave XD JULIA YOU CANNOT ESCAPE…. lmfao I will always drag you back… I won’t ever forget the day I got a twitter notification that someone drew me Unwritten fanart and the croaking sound I made was insane LMAO my friend who was with me was like WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED XD I was so excited!!! I still adore every piece of fanart she’s given me and I always will. Thank you, Julia, for bringing my imagination to life so many times, for showing me what you saw when you read my writing. It means more than I can say.

- @coleglend is the most underappreciated person in this fandom I swear. Or, who was in this fandom- Cole is off doing other things besides OnS, but regardless, she is so very amazing and beyond talented. I can’t even express how beautiful her art is and the emotions each piece sparks in me. Even her new Marvel artworks are just breathtaking and I truly admire them!!! I don’t know anyone who can make such detailed, visually engaging art- everything she creates belongs in a museum I swear. I want to print them and frame them for my walls!!! I look at her art all the time!!! Now that I’ve established how gorgeous her art is, talk about Cole as a person! She’s so sweet and kind and I love seeing her little posts on Instagram and such, even though I can’t understand most of them, I like seeing that she’s with friends and having a good time.

- @linnpuzzle is one of the coolest most amazing people in this fandom!!! Her art is STUNNING and as she knows, I will drop everything to commission her and buy her merch because I just am addicted to her gorgeous art!!! I am so honored to have some of her art as part of my collection of OnS things and I am forever going to treasure the commissions I’ve purchased from her!! Besides being a great artist, I love talking with Linn, too! I’m so glad we have things in common outside of MikaYuu, like Voltron and Kyo Kara Maoh :D Linn is truly too good for this world and she deserves everything okokok.

- @zilleniose-chu is truly an ICON of this fandom. We don’t talk alot outside of business stuff lolol but they are just freakin amazing!!! I adore their art so much- I always have, ever since I first saw their page!!- and I LOVE their AU’s and headcanons!! They are full of such great ideas and humor and they can share those ideas through really stunning and captivating artwork

And omg Maqui ignited the fire in all of our ShuuNaru hearts amiright!??? GOD her art inspired me so much to the point to where I wrote a ShuuNaru fic and it was so much fun!!! Maqui, thank you for drawing so many awesome things and creating so much for the fandom!! TO EVERYONE ELSE, WHO I DIDN’T MENTION BC MY BRAIN IS JUMBLED AND I AM EXHAUSTED: I LOVE YOU SO MUCH. DONT STOP CREATING. THE FANDOM IS A FLAMING GARBAGE HEAP SOMETIMES LIKE IT WAS TODAY. But DON’T LET THAT STOP YOU from having a good time, doing what you love, and creating things that you are proud to share!!! And if your heart leads you elsewhere, to a different brand new fandom, I hope you always remember the people you inspired with your work!! I hope you forget the bad memories and always treasure the good ones. I hope that we can be friends and/or that I can continue supporting you no matter where we all end up in the years to come. And if you decide to support me too, I give you my biggest, most heartfelt thanks.

No matter how ridiculous this fandom can get and how much stupid discourse can dampen the mood and disappoint me, I will never let it stop me from loving MikaYuu and OnS and what I do. I will never let it stop me from writing all that my crazy little heart wants. I will continue to write until my passion dies, and when that day comes I will probably cry as I say goodbye and resort to watching from the sidelines as everyone else carries on. I will never forget the fun I had here. These past 3 years have been so impactful already, and I know the future ones will continue to be- with the old friends, with the new friends, and with friends to be made!!

Let’s spread love more often rather than hate. I encourage anyone who feels inclined to make posts (maybe not as long as mine if you dont want XDD) talking about your favorite creators and friends in the fandom, too! Or, if that seems too corny to you, just continue to draw, write, edit, and cosplay! Continue to make people laugh and smile and cry and swoon! Show Review: Sled Fest - A Double Whammy Review

Review Part One ft. Emo Trash

So picture this: you’re one of two 20-something music nerds from nowhere, Connecticut and you’re lugging about 20 pounds of audio equipment in a backpack on a plane to go spend a weekend in the basement of a suburban home in Chicago (a city you’ve never been to before) for a crazy, over the top, killer house show festival (which you have only attended maybe 2 house shows before this.) Great, now you know how myself (Robin) and my cohost Jer were feeling as we braced ourselves for day one of Sled Fest!! A chaotic mix of anxiety, excitement, and caffeine led us to the Panda Palace, and thanks to the wonderful people running Sled and all the amazing bands who played, any nerves melted away as the night drifted into pure, unbridled enjoyment. Anyway, let’s tell you about the very bands that made sled fest so memorable.

Dogma Soup kicked Sled Fest off with a bang. Their chaotic energy shined through in the small basement full of string lights. They filled the room with an energy that immediately got everybody on board for what was going to be a crazy night. You could tell how much of a blast they were having up there and it was truly infectious. By the time they ripped through their last song, there was an unmistakable sense that a bar had been set, every band playing was going to have to BRING IT.

Mango Tree left me stunned. It’s as simple as that. The way their songs wormed their way into your ear with their soothing yet unbelievably catchy melodies made it impossible to look away. We all just watched in awe as two people with captured the entire room, and made it feel like a life-defining moment. It was a beautiful experience full of sing-a-longs, storytelling, dancing, and the true DIY experience: losing your mind having fun in a basement surrounded by people you truly connect with.

Poncho Villa’s Skull brought a raw and intimate energy to the dimly lit, crowded basement, and they managed this using only a cajon and a well-weathered Spanish nylon. From catchy melodies and anthemic choruses that had members of the crowd singing along to slower, more personal songs of loss and family, the sibling duo had a unique flair and salsa-fueled rhythm that stood out and caught people’s attention.

Marmalade brought the vibes hard. They came out and slowed things down for everyone, without losing any of the passion that had driven the day. Putting on a killer performance, they flowed with their songs and filled the multi-colored basement with sweet riffs and gorgeous melodies. You couldn’t help but get lost in it.

Tunnel Songs played one of the most hectic sets at Sled Fest. Dom immediately brought his trademarked chaos, playing in a full Santa suit, and the crowd was ready. As they started ripping through their songs the pit immediately opened up as people from all over the room flooded to the center screaming lyrics back at each other. The entire room reacted to Tunnel Songs, from the stage where people were spilling over from the pit onto the band members, to the stairs where people came down dancing their way to the pit with giant smiles on their faces. People had come ready for Tunnel Songs, and Tunnel Songs was ready for them.

Equipment played one of the tightest DIY sets I have seen in recent memory. It perfectly showcased their chaotic sound and the entire basement went wild for “Wet Mulch.” Energy spread throughout the crowd as they played; chaotic, feral energy, and the only solution was to go absolutely wild. They played with such confidence and energy and passion that you could easily just get lost in the energy. A truly phenomenal set by a truly phenomenal band.

Vermont brought the bangers and the Sled Fest crowd definitely responded in kind. Their songs conjured up the last energy remaining in a sweaty basement after a packed day and made magic with it. The set had chill energy that allowed everyone to hang back and recover while at the same time inviting anyone to lose their mind one last time before the night was over. Plenty went with the latter, and we left everything we had left in that pit.

Review Part Two ft. Ari Jindracek of DRM

As a newer member of the DIY scene, Sled Fest on Saturday, December 14th was the first house show I had ever been to. (I couldn’t go to the first half-day of the festival due to previously-scheduled appointments, so I will not be speaking to the bands that played December 13th except to say that I know full well that I missed out because the lineup was amazing.) At first, I didn’t know anyone and felt deeply out of place, because it seemed like everyone knew someone else except for me; however, part of my problem was the whole “sitting in a corner, making sure my camera settings were right” thing I was doing. As the night went on, I made some Show Friends and had the absolute time of my life, both during the quick musical sets and during the periods in between, when people would just sit on the floor in clumps or hang out in the garage and, according to Twitter, drink hot dog water for fun.

Bailey Minzenburger kicked off the set with a friendly vibe, chatting with the audience throughout the set like it was any old rehearsal; most of the day’s bands would have a similar conversational attitude. The music was slow, fuzzy, and peaceful, like a blanket in the cold afternoon. Guitarist Georgia contributed a lot to the effects, pulling out a slide to make shivery tones on and off, and Bailey, the namesake of the band, ranged from whispers to howls over the course of the set. The rhythm section, bassist Niko and drummer Jack, kept the sound rock-steady, laying a foundation for an impressive array of songs.

Half Kidding, or 60% of Half Kidding, weren’t on the bill, but when the scheduled band didn’t make it, they stepped up to the plate with borrowed instruments for a bite-sized three-song set, because, well, DIY. It speaks to how tight-knit the scene is that not only was most of the band in attendance, they were ready to play at a moment’s notice. The sound was obviously sparse, since the band’s drummer was not in attendance, but vocalists Madison and Kate’s voices blended smoothly and beautiful, and their songs were groovy and fun.

No Momentum held court for the first really heavy moment of the day, including an attempted circle pit (it dissolved pretty much instantly, which is a crying shame). Their music was crunchy with feedback and fun to listen to, which means that I’m looking forward to looking them up in my free time and hearing that unreleased album they were selling out of in the merch room.

Thank You, I’m Sorry bandleader Colleen kicked off one of the band’s songs by saying “Who’s ready to get fucking sad?” and no one could have made a more apropos remark about the band. I actually did reach the verge of tears during “Menthol Flavored Oatmeal”, though, this far removed from the show, I don’t quite remember which lines got me there. If I got emotional over a song I could hardly comprehend, just imagine what kind of things Thank You, I’m Sorry can make you feel if you really sit down and tune in.

Mush's set had a real convivial energy, as they performed with smiles and joked with each other between songs. Frontman Erik looked like he was having fun during the whole set, and the vibes leaked out into the crowd. Their music felt very mid-2000s in its tone, bouncy songs that got people dancing like it was hard to stand still.

Teamonade as a band are deeply skilled: Ryan and TJ on drums and bass respectively made for a solid rhythm section that gave guitarist Osi plenty of time to show off with stunning vocals. The band played several songs that they described as “jostlers” that were impossible to ignore; “Sadder Than U” caught my attention for how fun it was to learn and immediately sing along with. Watching Teamonade felt like the most radical kind of party you could ever feel lucky to get invited to.

Biitchseat, apparently, screeched up to the gig with twenty or so minutes to spare before their set, and I’m thankful they arrived in time. Dual guitarists Kris and Talor traded off vocal duty on singing about some of the most specific tiny joys of life, like finding friends in line for the women’s bathroom, naming bees, and loving the people you choose to spend your life with.

“Folk-goth” act Winnebago Vacation brought very soothing music into a sometimes-too-loud show, giving everyone a moment to breathe. Their sound at times made me imagine sitting in a pine forest at dusk; if you imagine that too, it was about as peaceful to stand there, swaying in time. Quiet guitar and ethereal vocals twirled around each other like campfire smoke in the late afternoon air, completing the audio-visual illusion.

World’s Greatest Dad brought a hard edge back to Sled Fest, and they made damn sure of that by stopping before the end of one of their songs so vocalist Maddie could warn people that a pit was about to open up and everyone had best be ready. (My expensive camera and I appreciated that warning.) The band seemed like they were constantly moving, and at one point, they all turned toward the middle of the stage to smile at each other to grin, clearly having the time of their lives rocking our worlds.

The effect-heavy sound of Mess made the Panda Palace basement feel like it was echoing even though it was too crowded to hear reverberation. The wash of sound felt smooth, like a really good piece of chocolate tastes, and washed over the room like a ray of sun. I hesitated to call Mess’s set peaceful, though, because I was so tuned in the whole time, trying to drink up every last note of their music in all its layers.

Elton John Cena, featuring Erik from Mush, felt like a band on the punkier side of pop-punk with the sharpest corners sanded down. Singer Avery’s voice is immediately recognizable no matter her project and brings a distinct sound into the band’s work. Their edge was undeniable, with guitars that bit and a high-octane Guided By Voices cover that got everyone moving to the grooving rhythms.

Arcadia Grey’s set was plagued with technical difficulties, but they may have been the highest-powered band of the night. They barely stopped moving around, creating a moshing set for the crowd and themselves. Vocalists Cori and Nate swapped duty amongst themselves and had stage presence that was almost too good for a chilly basement. Their songs are fun and ear-shredding, and if they’re playing to sold-out, adoring crowds in a few years, I wouldn’t be surprised.

Plans swung into their set with an upbeat force, constantly volleyed up into the air by drummer Sebastian’s skillful work. They were also the only band of the night to really get serious with the crowd mid-set when vocalist Cody stopped to talk about mental health and suicide to a group of people; while a lot of artists sang about mental illness, hearing a mid-set speech about it is different, and I appreciated the moment to talk about the realities of life outside of the string-light-lit basement.

Niiice screamed their way into the home stretch of Sled Fest with a musical fervor that turned toe-tapping rhythms into mosh-pit energy. The guitar and bass roared, ragged-edged in the way good punk bands can be and drummer Sage, also of Thank You, I’m Sorry, seemed to pour himself entirely into his kit, powering the set like a colossal motor.

Savvy readers will know that I had the pleasure of knowing about Mover Shaker in advance of this gig, and, if all the people singing along are any indication, a lot of people were there with me. The band started off their set with their most peaceful song and ended with a pit that took up half the basement when they pulled out the one song in the set that wasn't from their newest album. From disco to screamo and from laughing over stage banter to the verge of tears over flawless lyrics, Mover Shaker's set was an emotional roller coaster and I'm thankful they let me get on board.

Sled Fest had everything I wanted it to have and more: fun people, amazing music, a dog, hysterical overheard jokes, and, most of all, an environment where I was able to feel like part of something. I was able to talk, face to face, with artists who were about to go on stage and melt my brain and make me love every second. I felt at home in the Panda Palace and in the DIY scene of the day, memes and all, and I hope that some of us meet again at the next show at the next house and mosh together like a family.
