Henry, Earl of Alconbury: Mother, what a pleasant surprise! I did not expect you in London quite so soon.

Catherine, Dowager Countess of Alconbury: Yes, we decided to come earlier, you see. You look well, dear Alconbury, what about Julia? How has she been?

Henry: She is as lovely as ever, of course. Julia will be overjoyed to hear of your arrival and keen to see Arabella again, just as I find me to be. Do tell her she already has two fast friends in us.

Catherine: I shall certainly do so. And since you did not come here to see me, I will keep you no longer. I suppose you wish to see the duke?

Henry: Indeed, Madam. I take it he's in the library?

Catherine: I fear your cousin is not at home. He was unwell earlier today and left soon after I noticed it. I do not know where he is.

Henry: Unwell? What do you mean?

Catherine: We were talking, and suddenly he paled, seemed a bit lightheaded as well.

Henry: I see. But in any case, you need not worry about his health, mother, for his sullen disposition belies a strong constitution.

Catherine: I am glad to hear it. Howbeit, I am sorry you wasted your journey.

Henry: The joy it brings me to see you outweighs any possible inconvenience, mother. And I could hardly call it wasted: Wolverham is not half as elusive as he fancies himself to be.
