Schindler’s List (1993)
I came into Schindler’s List guarded. I wanted to like it, but was afraid it wouldn't live up to my expectations. Would it feel like homework? What if it was too sad to be enjoyable? I feared for nothing. This picture is everything you’ve heard, and more. It's cinema at its best: rich characters, powerful emotions, and unforgettable imagery. You don't have to have seen every movie ever to know it's one of the greatest ever made.
Based on the true story, Oskar Schindler (Liam Neeson) sees the Nazi displacement of Kraków’s Jews and sees an opportunity. By employing the little-demanding Jewish accountant Itzhak Stern (Ben Kingsley) and other Jewish Workers in his factory, he can make a small fortune. As World War II rages, he witnesses to the horrors of concentration camps until, one day, he can no longer bear to watch idly.
At 197 minutes, the screenplay by Steven Zaillian is perfection. The time we spend with Schindler allows us to see true change the way it happens in real life. It’s not really one single moment; it’s little things that slowly chip away. When Schindler finally realizes he’s surrounded by monsters and decides to act, it’s a decision so organic and so real. This realism is present in others as well, with special attention given to Kingsley’s Itzhak Stern and Ralph Fiennes as Amon Göth. Fiennes is particularly engrossing because he's so evil but never in a cartoonish way. You're always unsure of where his character is going next. There’s so much tension when he’s on-screen, and to get to know him as we do here is both a heartbreaking and frightening experience.
I know over 3 hours SOUNDS like a long time, but here, it isn’t. The picture is perfect just the way it is, because you get lost in it. You’re enraptured watching the situation escalate in German-occupied Poland. Because of the length of the arcs, you kind of become acclimated to what's shown - in the same way these people would have been. Then BAM! The film pulls out an earth-shattering moment that makes you realize how truly horrifying this historical event was. No textbook summary or journalist’s photo could compare to the scene - if you've viewed the movie, you know the one - where colour is introduced in this otherwise black-and-white film. That choice by director Steven Spielberg is so powerful you can never forget it. Not only because of what it means then, symbolically, but also for what it means in the end.
Schindler’s List is subtle, masterfully acted, and rich with emotion. I don’t want to praise it beyond reason and leave others to be disappointed by it, but it changed me. Partially, the transformation came from the powerful story and layered characters. The impeccable craftsmanship at work and the undeniable passion in every single frame are equally responsible. Right up until the very end, I was hungry to see more. Now that it’s over, I’m not sure how I feel. The final shot is one that has left me in turmoil because I’m not sure if it’s the best scene in the film, or the worst. I don’t know if that makes any sense, but feelings often don’t. Schindler’s List made me feel so many things at once. I can't wait to see it again. (On Blu-ray, August 4, 2017)

While Zillian isn't the type to make wishes like that, if given the chance he would ask for the pack of Scarfies that raised him to be brought back from the dead. Sure, his later Clan, Eon-Eon, also suffered massive loses as well, but they at least had a fighting chance. Those scarfies were in no way capable of defending themselves from Valfrey's forces and didn't deserve any of it either.
(Me cryptically hiding the true name of a Knight in my Blog title for a third time. 🔥)
Since I only ever mentioned Zillian once and never described him at all, here is some more info about him.
Zillian is a member of Clan Eon-Eon, a group of Dream Matterborn who are responsible for the Fountains of Dreams. He was born within a region known as the realm of Shadows which is known for its dark matter infestation, which left a permanent mark on about half his body when he was struck with dark magic once. He was an orphan who was raised by Scarfies, thought to be dark matter himself up until he grew wings. When Valfrey's Samurai came to eradicate all things dark matter they also killed these scarfies. Zillian fled to Eon-Eon territory where he joined the clan and became a fountain keeper and then got promoted to the role of Tower Operator. He is non-binary (any/all) and has the artist ability. Very silent at first with a scary looking stare, but just as an odd sense of humour. Likes to startle people by peaking into rooms and waiting for them to notice him, then leaves laughing, for instance. He likes to draw hands on his canvasas and lets them chase his enemies in battle.

Finally completed the redesign for my demonsona, Willemence (AKA "Willem”) Zillian Wyvernblood, Aspiring Master of Beasts!
In case you missed it, his name is he’s a Beastkeeper and a total dork who loves studying the creatures of the Boiling Isles and wants to help the locals develop a better, slightly less fearful understanding of them. He hates the idea of the Coven System, however, and only joined because his parents wanted him to. So he lives in the woods outside of Bonesborough where the Emperor’s Coven can’t bother him; runs a wildlife rehab centre out of a shack with his friend where he does most of his work. His Palisman is a flying turtle named Spin, and he has a hood that’s supposed to scare off anything that would try to sneak up on him
Also he gets mixed up with Kikimora and they have to work together because of totally legitimate plot reasons.

'Netflix is about to release a television series where the protagonist will find himself trapped in a web of violence and betrayal that he never expected, as the marketing campaign for Ripley picks up the pace before the show's debut on April. The streaming platform has released new character posters for the upcoming project (via Rotten Tomatoes), giving audiences a new look at the main cast of the series created by Steve Zaillian. During a complicated time in the world, no one can be trusted, but Tom Ripley (Andrew Scott) still has a mission to follow, and he'll stop at nothing to get what he wants.
The premise of Ripley is based on Patricia Highsmith's successful novel, "The Talented Mr. Ripley", which follows the titular character as he is sent to convince an important figure's son, Dickie Greenleaf (Johnny Flynn), to return home. However, upon arriving at Dickie's home, Ripley realizes that he feels jealous about the people who live there, becoming fascinated with Marge Sherwood (Dakota Fanning), a close friend of Dickie's. Without finding a better solution to his problem, Ripley begins to meticulously imitate Dickie, scaring the people he was supposed to protect.
Taking into account how lucky they were to get an impressive cast for their Ripley adaptation, Netflix began to heavily promote the series based on the star power it will bring to the screen. The first trailer for the series made it explicitly clear that Marge doesn't trust the new visitor, setting the stage for the conflict that has entertained audiences for more than half a century. Besides creating the television series, Zaillian wrote the screenplays for it, and he also directed every episode of the story. The filmmaker previously worked as a writer on The Irishman, Martin Scorsese's acclaimed film about a criminal network with plenty of ambition.
The Talented Cast of 'Ripley'
Adapting a story as powerful as the one told in the pages of "The Talented Mr. Ripley" always requires an immense amount of talent, which is why Zillian and Netflix decided to cast Andrew Scott, Johnny Flynn and Dakota Fanning. Scott was recently praised for his performance as Adam in All of Us Strangers, a haunting love story between two men where nothing is as it seems. On the other hand, Fanning recently appeared as Emma Collins in The Equalizer 3, the final installment of Robert McCall's (Denzel Washington) journey as a dangerous vigilante...'
