The girls looked particularly good here and I really enjoyed that performance of "stone cold" (although I am starting to get a bit tired of it XD). By now I've gotten used to Kaori doing Wakana's chorus parts but seeing the official MV at the very end of the broadcast is making me miss Wakana again T_T

"from the edge" was fun to watch but ultimately just meh. Not a fan of the song. There are some epic parts but overall, there is too much going on for me and as we all know, LiSA's voice is not my cup of tea.

I knew I'd listened to a lot of background-y music this year, but Cult of the Lamb absolutely deserved to be #1, I thought it'd missed its chance to be high on the list last year

#don't know what otacore is but I did listen to a LOT of Living Tombstone & similar in the back half of the year so I'm guessing it's that.#catfishchat #really happy with the artist list ^-^#was obsessed w/ yuki kajiura for like 7 years so I'm doing school-era me proud #honestly this is much more like my highschool listening style than what I've listened to in the past few years #highschool me would absolutely have listened to edm tracks on repeat -_-#but also would've liked starcadian and ghost #I don't feel great rewarding this platform for its dataharvesting but #I can't divest myself of all my known vices and this ^^^ is one of them.

I've been having the biggest, massive Yuki Kajiura & Projects brainrot - to be honest, I'm always in a YukiKaj brainrot, it comes and goes, but she and the singers and the band always remains a major favorite of mine for very obvious reasons, really. This is Kalafina (sadly now disbanded). This freaking masterpiece keeps being banned from YT so I decided to upload it here cause it's one I just keep watching over and over again for real.

It's the harmonies, the coreography

YukiKaj didn't perform with Kalafina, she does perform with FictionJunction (her other main deal), so she isnt in the video, the girls are her singers Hikaru, Keiko and Wakana respectively - no one can convince me they are not etereal beings; this performance is from the Kalafina Arena Live 2016. thoughts on the heavens feel movies?

the runtime was not nearly long enough to do the story justice imo

i appreciated a lot of the additions like sakura's dream sequence or the new illya scene where she overhears taiga talking abt kiritsugu

but they did cut a lot of important moments particularly for illya and kirei (my two fave characters) in the last movie

the film trilogy structure did not make a lot of sense to me, the way they had to force 1 blockbuster fightscene per movie just really shows where their priorities are

lancer vs assassin was a sidenote in the VN, and while i won't say saber alter vs herc didn't deserve the treatment it got it also wasn't in anyones list of top 3 HF scenes

the most egregious was saber alter vs rider in the third movie though because it was sandwiched between some of the most anticipated scenes of all time (nine lives blade works and kirei vs shirou)

also i wasn't particularly impressed by yuki kajiura's soundtrack

wasn't bad or anything but i was expecting more remixes of classic vn tracks like light and darkness

like basically as far as im concerned all the FSN anime adaptations should be viewed as supplemental material to the VN rather than replacements so i won't get too mad at them choosing to focus on certain things rather than others but at the same time i would prefer them to do justice to my favourite moments yknow

First Anime Tie-In Announced!

KEIKO’s first physical single Yūyami no uta will be released on January 24, 2024, it has been chosen as the ending theme for the upcoming three-cour Sengoku Youko anime adaptation which will begin airing in Japan on January 10.

Comment: Oh wow, I‘m hyped for this. An anime tie-in for Keiko composed by Yuki Kajiura, I‘d say that‘s pretty much a guaranteed hit. Wonder what that will do for Keiko’s solo career. The snippet sounds ultra promising.

KOKIA updates: November 6-22, 2023

Admin note: As explained before, I am currently still not able to provide full translations within a reasonable time frame, so below follows a summary of KOKIA’s recent updates on her official channels instead. Thank you for your understanding. I will soon make a new post to explain the current situation.

In her blog entry of November 6, KOKIA talks about her collaboration with composer/producer Yuki Kajiura, talking about the song Kaze yo fuke ('May the wind blow') (more information here) and Kaji Fes 2023, where KOKIA will appear as a guest on the second day, December 9. She'll perform the new song as well as previous songs with Yuki Kajiura. KOKIA mentions there have been many requests for another collaboration over the years, and this opportunity makes her very happy.

She remarks how this might be the last chance for her Japanese fans to see her, as her November performance at the sonorium is fan club members only. She might have another small project at 01073 house soon however (the place of her photo exhibition), so stay tuned for more information.

KOKIA held her fan club concert at the sonorium in Tokyo last weekend, November 18-19. In her blog entry leading up to that on November 17, she mentions that it will be the first time she will be selling tickets for a concert she'll hold at the end of the year at the venue. That performance will be a fresh experience with new instruments, and a chance for thanking her fans for 2023 and to welcome the new year. No further details other than the ticket price of ¥ 7,000 have been revealed so far.

As for next year, KOKIA mentions she's been quiet as she's preparing for 2024, making it a year where she will sow seeds and bloom again, bringing her songs to various places.

Finally, in her entry for November 22, KOKIA announces the digital release of her 25th anniversary album The Lighthouse. Her second jazz cover album Watching from above vol.2 is also digitally available. She links to two press releases, on CDJournal and Barks (which I am currently not able to translate, apologies).

The Lighthouse is available via various online sources here. As some songs have now official English translations that didn't have them before, I will update the discography page accordingly.

Please note that for now, it seems only the first disc of the two is available for digital release/streaming.

30th Anniversary KajiFes Day 1 Impressions

I was extremely fortunate to have been able to attend both days of KajiFes. Took a lot out of me financially, but it was very much worth it. Been a fan of Kajiura for around 20 years, and KajiFes my first time watching Kajiura and FictionJunction perform live. I was also thrilled to be able to hear a number of Kajiura's BGM vocalists live.

This isn't going to be a comprehensive report, sorry; I don't have the energy for that. I'm not going to touch on every song or use paragraphs. I'm just going to post like I was excitedly tweeting this.

On to KajiFes Day 1:

FINALLY GET TO SEE YUKI KAJIURA ON STAGE LIVE I WAS SO HAPPY. AND THE FRONT BAND MEMBERS AHHH

I have loved 'Canta Per Me' for almost 20 years, so thankful to be able to hear Yuriko sing it. How nostalgic.

YURI KASAHARA. OH MY GOD. UNREAL. CHILLS. Utterly incredible. I love Liminality so so so much. And 'Salva nos'! Jaw-droppingly and mind-blowingly epic. The FJ utahime were also absolutely on point in that. Just WOW

Remi! I love Remi so much, very happy she was one of the guests. She sounds so ethereal and is an adorable human being. I love 'Luminous Sword', very happy I got to hear Remi sing that live.

I was secretly hoping that Chiaki Ishikawa would show up, but alas, it was not to be. Still, 'Obsession' with Lino Leia was very enjoyable. And then 'SENYA ICHIYA'? MY FAVOURITE SEE-SAW SONG?! I could have cried, hearing it made me so happy. Rito did a great job.

Oh, Kajiura and the FBM have been pretty awesome as always, but shoutout to the accordionist (Yoshiaki Sato) and Uillleann pipes player (Naomi Nakahara). I confess, I've never been much of a fan of the Uilleann pipes in YK's stuff but I definitely have a new appreciation for them after watching Nakahara play, she was amazing

Aimer was awesome. Commanding while she's singing, and adorably awkward when she's not. I don't understand Japanese, but I could tell YK was teasing her a little, it was cute. 'I beg you' was my favourite of the songs she performed, it was epic.

YAY 'STONE COLD' always wanted to hear that live

Revo showed up just for 'Sajin no Kanata e' (and some banter with YK), still managed to be a show-stealing drama queen, loved it

Also, Sajin no Kanata e with everyone, pretty good, and then the part that was Wakana's solo comes and KEIKO IS SINGING IT? EXCUSE ME? "GOODBYE DEAR FRIEND" HOW DARE YOU BREAK ME LIKE THIS I'M CRYING NOW

Encore! 'image theme of Xenosaga II' with utahimes plus Lino Leia and Rito was AMAZING. It's almost a proper choir with the six of them.

I wondered for a bit if I should pick this canon amongst those I would talk about for Femslash February, because it's very much an anime classic for yuri fans and fans of "girls with guns" series but it's also far from as popular/well known as it used to be...

So since I recently finished a rewatch, let's talk about Noir!

Noir is a 26 episodes anime from 2001, set in modern times and following two assassins working together.

Mireille comes from a family with ties into the Corsican mafia and is haunted by a tragic event from her past, while Kirika is an amnesiac living a life that she knows isn't her own in Japan as a normal girl in the first episode. They are connected by a broken watch and by the word 'Noir', the name of a legendary assassin, that they feel is connected to their pasts. When they team-up, they take it as their working pseudonym.

So the basis of the story is two emotionally repressed assassins partners, that have an arrangement about finding the identity/memories of one of them, but also with the promise that Mireille will kill Kirika once they achieve that goal. As you can guess, they have a pretty strange and messed-up relationship! And there's a good amount of shipping subtext to it, with the two of them living together and slowly growing closer and sharing little moments of intimacy (as well as some beloved tropes like sharing a bed ;D) that means everything will get more complicated once harsh truths are discovered.

More shippiness comes with the character of Chloe, another assassin that is linked to Noir but will take a somewhat antagonistic role towards our protagonists. She's canonically attracted to Kirika, in her own "assassin with repressed emotions" way, of course.

Altena is another important reoccuring female character, that is deeply linked to Chloe, to the truth of Noir and to an organization called Soldats that Mireille and Kirika are investigating. There also are a few other minor female characters that appears during the series, some with more shipping potential than others!

It's a pretty slowly paced story with a good number of episodic episodes mixed in with those more connected to the main plot but I'd say it's still an interesting watch today, so give it a try if it sounds interesting to you!

Also, the soundtrack was made by Kajiura Yuki and is absolutely lovely!
