I haven't seen many anime movies, but my favorite has to be Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop. It's just such a simple and sweet movie. The visuals and art style are so beautiful. The colors are all warm. And the themes for both Cherry and Smile are something I can relate to a lot. Especially because I consider Cherry to be autistic. There's a lot of reasons I think that and I'll put it in another post later. But also Smile's insecurity, especially with her smile, is also something that kinda hits home for me. And seeing both of them overcome this (Cherry with his fear of public speaking/sharing emotions and Smile with taking off her mask) gives you this fuzzy feeling at the end and it's so rewarding. I love this movie so very much and would recommend it to anyone. (It's also pg so anyone can watch it)

Rewatched Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop again and aaaaaa, both characters (especially Cherry) are still so relatable :,)

One of my favorite scenes, although sad, is when he reaches out to Smile, wanting to say what’s on his mind but not having the right words. When he puts his headphones on to block out all the noise, only to silently crouch down and start to cry, it’s heartbreaking.

It’s also comforting to me, though. Personally, I have so many of those sit down and cry moments when things get too overwhelming. I also resort to solitude and quietness.

And although I know the end message was that he needed to overcome his shyness in order for people to know what he wants, in order for Smile to know how he felt, I think realistically if the story continued it would still take him awhile to get used to talking to people and being more confident in what he has to say. That’s what I love about this story though, it feels so real. Yes, the ending was happy, but it wasn’t a fairytale either. It’s easy to imagine that things wouldn’t just begin to play out perfectly because during the actual film characters made mistakes, felt guilt and sadness, struggled with insecurities, and honestly they both were completely lost. As in, at the start they had no idea who they really were.

But anyway, I’m not sure if this movie has an active fandom, but I still wanted to give my thoughts. If you’re reading this and you haven’t seen this movie on Netflix yet, then I wholeheartedly recommend that you do.
