What Are Some Of The Best Ways To Make School Assemblies More Fun And Interesting - Coeur de Xocolat
Yes, we know what you’re probably instinctively thinking in response to that question… can there such a thing? After all, your own school days might have been characterised by some less-than-enthralling assemblies, to the point that clock-watching became one of the go-to sports in your school.
But of course, boring school assemblies don’t do much good for anyone. If a school assembly isn’t delivered in a fun and engaging way, the pupils in attendance won’t absorb its messages. And the job satisfaction of the teacher leading an assembly certainly won’t be enhanced if they can barely summon up much enthusiasm themselves.
So, if you want to know how to make an assembly fun, let’s cycle through some proven ideas, right here. By adopting a few of them, you can help ensure everyone present at the next assembly you lead actually appreciates it, as part of an occasion that emphasises personal development and the school’s place in the broader community.
Make the assembly short, snappy, and memorable
With so many assemblies taking place over the typical school term or year, you don’t necessarily need to hold long assemblies that will just drive young minds to boredom anyway.
Instead, you might like the idea of making your assemblies shorter, but still impactful – perhaps by building on the same topic through a series of assemblies. This could also help make children more willing to participate in an assembly that they know won’t drag on seemingly forever.
Speak from the heart
Even if, in any given assembly, you’re addressing the children about a topic that might not be greatly related to you, there could still be scope to incorporate your own personal take on things.
There may be stories and examples you can use that can help make the given subject more relatable to the pupils, and that will help you communicate your own passion about it.
When someone is effortlessly enthusiastic in what they’re saying, this shines through to others. And by ensuring this in your school assembles, you can help give greater insight into your own values, and those of the wider school.
Incorporate music and video in interesting ways
Music isn’t just something to open a school assembly with! It could form a more integral piece of the assembly in general – perhaps with opportunities for the children to consider and communicate their emotional responses to any of a range of music genres.
There might even be a certain link between the music that you play and the theme of the rest of the assembly, and you could ask the pupils present to identify what that theme is.
Similarly, relevant and suitable video clips could be used at various points in the assembly to ‘punctuate’ proceedings. You could source a short film online to provide a starting point for discussion, or even – if you have the resources – create your own to tie in with certain themes.
Give your next assembly a ‘chocolate’ theme!
It might seem like a “cheat code” for making a school assembly more interesting, but yes, chocolate really can be the key (well, one of them) to making your own assemblies more worthwhile.
We aren’t, of course, suggesting that you merely hand out chocolate treats to the pupils. Instead, why not arrange a school visit by Coeur de Xocolat?
For your next school assembly, the children could be learning more about so many of the things that make chocolate so interesting and relevant to our world, ranging from the journey of a cocoa bean to the process of actually making a chocolate lollipop or bar.
To find out more about how to make an assembly fun and educational with our help, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us today, so that we can put together the right assembly presentation for your school, at the right price.

Delicious Etymology
excerpts in translation from the Rotcham Veriloquy, the premier etymological dictionary of Merch. It has been published in several editions since the late nineteenth century via the press of the university of Rotcham [Rochdale].
mikecorn n. /ˈməik.kɔːn/ [maize] a cereal grass of Lower Mendevan [Central American] origin. 1530 compound of mike alt. mayk, makee and corn < Morrove [Moroccan Arabic] ميك · maik (1502) < a language of the Arcabil [Caribbean], poss. Veonic [Wayuu] maiki "mikecorn".
shadome n. /ˈʃa.duːm/ [tomato] a plant of the nightshade kind having edible fruits; the fruit of this plant. 1570 < Vascon xadoma (1534) < Morrove شطم · shed'oma (1510) < Normal Nawat [Classical Nahuatl] shitomatl, denoting a kind of fruit used in stews and sauces. This is thought to be a derivative from the verb tomāwi "to swell".
shockle n. /ˈʃɔ.kəl/ [chocolate] a drink or later a foodstuff prepared from the quattle [cacao] bean. 1623 backwards from shockled adj. /ˈʃɔ.kləd/ "containing shockle" < Vascon xocolat (1596) < unknown root, poss. Nawat chicol "wooden stick" or Mayattan chocol "hot".
tartover n. /taːˈtuː.ə/ [potato] a plant of the nightshade kind with starchy underground tubers. 1583 alt. tartove < Vascon tartova (moresca) "(Moorish) truffle" (1555) < Tuscan tartuvo alt. tartuva "truffle" < Latin terrae tūber "truffle, lit. tuber of the earth". See also familiar and hypocoristic forms like tover /tuː.ə/, tattow /təˈtuː/ and tatter /ˈta.tə/.
tashban n. /ˈtaʃ.ban/ [vanilla] a plant of the orchid kind bearing podlike fruit whose seeds yield a extract used for flavouring and perfuming. 1608 < Vascon taxbàn (1567) or French tacheban < Morrove تشبان · tashbān (1518) < poss. Nawat tashpān, or directly < Thebevan [Totonac] tałpán, denoting a specific variety of the tashban orchid.

Lake Atitlan: Panajachel & San Juan
My alarm woke me up at 4.45 for a shower, I didn’t know if I just couldn’t figure it out but it seemed like there was only cold water so it was a quick one! As I was getting ready there was a knock at my door at 5.20am. Apparently the car was already here for me, which I wasn’t expecting until at least 5.30! A few minutes later I was ready to go, the man from the front desk ushered me down the stairs to the awaiting driver who was cleaning off the windows. I sat in the back for the delightful ride across the cobblestones of central Antigua and then moved to the front seat when we picked up a French couple along the way. You’d think that we were on a tight deadline the way this guy drove us so fast, weaving in between the lanes and slowing down only when there was an unavoidable speed bump or pothole - although many times he’d just drive on the other side of the road to bypass it altogether. We passed through some rural areas and larger cities waking up for the day with the driver blasting mostly good beats but a few Christian songs that proclaimed everyone in the world needs Jesus. We were randomly stopped on a roadside checkpoint and the driver and French lady that could speak Spanish explained that we are tourists going to Lake Atitlan for the day. He dropped us off at the tour office with about an hour and a half of free time. The restaurant across the street was recommended for breakfast and the French couple went there but I wanted to go for a walk to explore Panachajel. There wasn’t much open yet so I wandered down the main street seeing what was on offer and it was pretty chaotic already. There were loads of stray dogs and some goats being walked, other ones tied up in front of a shop. I ordered a breakfast of French toast and coffee in one of the many restaurants. It wasn’t a normal French toast it was something similar I suppose, but deep fried and with jam in the middle. It wasn’t bad, just very unhealthy and way too much, it would’ve been 4 slices of bread with each piece double stacked. There was also some melon on the side which was so welcome from the overall oiliness of the toast. At 9am we met up with our tour guide Elena and another tour member from Tokyo, Toyoda-san. We began at the viewpoint of Panajachel where the three volcanoes are visible and we could all get a nice photo to start the day. There were stray dogs everywhere as we walked down to the pier to get in our boat and cross the lake. It was a cold ride of about 25 minutes and I was so glad to have my hoodie as I watched the others shivering and our guide wrapped in a borrowed raincoat from the boaties. Our first stop was at San Juan La Laguna, the pier had hanging lights and decorations so I already liked the atmosphere in this lakeside town. From the pier it was a steep uphill walk into the main village where we sat down for a demonstration of chocolate making from Karla at Xocolat. She explained the entire process from growing the cacao to grinding it down into powder and then took us through some samples of the edible chocolate as well as hand creams. Next we visited a textile workshop for a demonstration of how traditional Guatemalan textiles are made from picking cotton, dying it and then the weaving process. With the guide’s help I was able to spin a little stick in a bowl and make a cotton thread which she gave me as a bracelet. Our last visit in San Juan was a tour of a honey farm, it definitely felt more like a sales opportunity than a tour and he pushed us all to buy something made of honey. Elena got a free lollipop for bringing in the tour I suppose even though no one bought anything there. We walked back down the steep street and got onto the boat to head to our next lakeside village.

Delightful Weekend Brunch at Figaro Coffee
We were looking for a place to grab an early brunch as we had just finished some morning chores for the weekend. I wanted to have a big breakfast but my husband was also craving for some cakes and cold beverages. Thankfully, there’s a cafe that serves all of these with a branch that is just a few minutes away from our place, Figaro Coffee.
The mall had just opened but we were ready to enjoy a delightful weekend brunch at Figaro Coffee. With branches scattered all over the Philippines, it’s quite easy to find a cafe nearby. We headed up to the fifth level of Shangri-La Plaza Mall in Mandaluyong where Figaro Coffee had its cafe overlooking the central lobby.
Figaro Coffee Company is a premier full-service coffee chain whose menu also includes sandwiches, pastas, set meals, as well a selection of freshly-baked muffins, cakes and pastries. Founded in 1993, Figaro is considered as the country’s number one Filipino cafe which started even before the big international coffee chains arrived here.
Figaro has always been known for its freshly brewed coffee, but it’s really “a cafe above the rest” because it is so much more than just a coffee shop. I can enjoy a full savoury meal at Figaro complete with beverages, pastries, and desserts any time of the day.
My husband wanted his ice-cold frappes right away so he ordered the Choco Chips Java (P195-L). I wanted something a bit lighter on the calories so I chose one of their refreshing juices, the Green Earth Detox (P185-L) with its healthy combination of kale, spinach, red grapes.
There are always plenty of enticing pastries on display at Figaro to start your day. These include the Black Forest Ensaymada plus other cookies and breads.
My favorite at Figaro is their Heavenly Cheese Roll (P75). These light and fluffy cheeserolls are similar to a sweet ensaymada but with a softer texture. Figaro heats up these cheees rolls for those who want to have them for dine-in.
Figaro has several pasta and sandwich options, but you can get the best of both worlds with their Half Sandwich + Half Pasta (P275) combo meal. The pasta flavors include Arrabiata, Pasta a la Carlo, Garden Herb Pesto, and my choice which is the Chicken Mushroom Carbonara. This is a creamy and savory white sauce pasta with chicken chunks, shiitake mushrooms and parmesan cheese.
For your sandwich options, choose from Grilled Ham & Cheese, Chicken Waldorf, Gourmet Tuna, and the Grilled Chicken Pesto Focaccia Sandwich which has grilled chicken fillet with bell peppers, pesto spread, and grated cheese inside a multigrain bread. You can also add P60 for a small drink.
What we really love at Figaro are their delicious and savory All Day Meals. The Sukiyaki Beef Tapa (P260) comes with classic and traditionally marinated beef tapa served with garlic fried rice, fried egg, and side salad.
Another breakfast dish that is good to have the entire day is the Smoked Bangus Belly (P290) with its deboned premium cut smoked milkfish belly that is also served with garlic fried rice, fried egg, and side salad.
For my husband who wanted to have a big lunch, he ordered the Crispy Liempo with Laing (P300). This is Figaro’s signature crispy pinoy liempo and taro leaves cooked in a special coconut milk. It is served with side salad and garlic fried rice to complete the meal.
For dessert, we were thinking of trying Figaro’s newest tropical treat, the Pina Colada Cake, but there were many other tempting cakes on display. Figaro offers a Pasta and Drink Combo (P190) which includes any medium hot or iced drink and a pastry or a slice of cake (+P39). So we decided to get a slice of Grand Xocolat Gateau Cake (P125) plus a cup of Hot Chocolate (P150) to go.
It’s easy to enjoy your favorites at Figaro Coffee because these are also available for delivery. Order via GrabFood with their Unli Deals promo and get 25% off for orders with a minimum spend of ₱350 (maximum discount of ₱100). You can also order online using the GLife and Booky apps, or order directly from their branches. Check out their location and contact list on this link: bit.ly/FCBranchList.
Remember to bring your Loyalty Stamp Card whenever you visit Figaro. Get 1 stamp for ₱200 worth of single-receipt purchase in any of their participating branches for dine-in and take-out until August 31, 2023. Collect 4 stamps for a Free pastry, 8 stamps for a Free Angel’s Pizza Gift Voucher, 12 stamps for a Free 8 oz. Classic Hot Drink, and 17 stamps for a Free 16oz. Classic Iced Drink. Enjoy all these treats and more at Figaro Coffee Company!

— Ficha Johan
Nombre completo: Johan Alexander Hudcek.

I was looking at my tub of ice cream that says “3 chocolates” (spanish) and “3 xocolates” (catalan) and I was bewildered for a second until I went to go look it up and found that chocolate in catalan is xocolata (feminine) while in spanish it’s chocolate (masculine). I genuinely always thought it was xocolat - TIL I guess!
