Friday Night Shots - Player Interaction
Friday Night Shots - Player Interaction
Good evening! Welcome back for another week. I’m so happy you could join me. Truth to tell, it gets a little lonely behind the bar in this place, even on a Friday night. Maybe I should actually unlock the doors so people could come in? Just a thought. Anyway, take a seat and have a drink! I got anything you want. Let me turn the music down (I’ll call tomorrow to get Justin Bieber removed…

5th September 2023
The evening began with Green and Purple arriving to find Plum and Cobalt sitting outside the pub chatting.  This was partly because the weather was warm, but also because someone else was sitting at our usual table and we had been relegated to another long table on the other side of the room.  Pine arrived soon after and once introductions between Cobalt and those who had not been about last time…

Ok wholesome rant time.
I love board games. Not like, Monopoly or Scrabble, no no. Nerd board games. Board games with intricately designed pieces and rulebooks thick enough to scare away the average person. And Wingspan designed by Elizabeth Hargrave is the best one.
Now, I am an autistic floof who would prefer conflict be avoided, so if you want to make kids cry with your capitalist greed and brutalist strategy go play Ticket to Ride. This game is not that. It is a chill beautiful refined game to put your pinkies out and enjoy a cup of tea with your friends. Imagine sunny days with poofy pretty clouds happy carefree vibes.
The game centers around birbs. You are a birb enthusiast and if that doesn’t hold true in your real life it will soon. Your goal is simple: score the most points. There are a myriad of ways to do this but they all revolve around hosting a sanctuary to birbs of all habitats, diet, size, etc. You play birbs by paying food and eggs. You get these resources by taking a turn to obtain them in a specific habitat. The more birbs you have in that habitat the more of that resource you get and you get to use those birbs powers, which are themed after the real life birb. It’s an engine building game but these rules aren’t really why this is the best game ever.
This game excels at providing a warm fuzzy feeling in your heart. Your competitors cannot impede your progress as everyone has their own sanctuary/board. They can only help you (ie birbs that let everyone get a resource.) Everyone can flourish, and in fact the more players the higher the average score.
But the piece de le resistance is the theming. The birbs are FUCKING GORGEOUS. I don’t mean they only picked birbs that look pretty, I mean the art on these cards makes me calm and happy. And each card has a fun fact at the bottom about that bird or it’s history. The whole game oozes charm and really just encapsulates the feeling when you see an animal and go “oh he’s just a silly little guy.”
The base game is North American birbs so pretty standard but the expansions really leaned into silly guy territory. Or maybe I’m just not educated enough to recognize foreign birbs as normal. The base game is very well constructed and a great stepping stone into slipping into the rabbit hole of expansions.
Because of this game, I have a new hobby. Birbs. I have a favorite birb. I watch birbs out my window. I know random birb facts. I can identify most birbs into a general category. It’s wonderful.
Tumblr media
Look at this guy. This is a European Robin. My man does not have any worries. He is living under a rock. He doesn’t even know what a tax is! His entire existence is just round boi. Oh to be a birb like him on a snowy rock.
Tumblr media
This guy, however. This is a Sri Lanka Frogmouth. He has committed at least 3 war crimes and he knows it and I love him anyways. He’s so ugly! I love him. He is also my favorite irl birb. So he gets 3 pictures.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This guy, the American Woodcock, is in base game and he gives “mom i frew up” vibes. He looks guilty and uncertain and HIS NAME IS A WOODCOCK.
I met these birbs through this game and I’m a happier person for it.
TL;DR if you like board games and want a good relaxing time and maybe a new birb obsession Wingspan is the game.
Below: card art
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also bonus the art is mostly male birbs for the foliage but they can lay eggs so this game is 95% trans birbs. Hell yeah.

Board Game 30-Day Challenge Day 24
Day 24: What do you think about expansions? Are there any games that NEED an expansion to be good? Do you recommend any expansions? Should a game be able to stand on its own without expansions?
A game absolutely needs to stand on its own - if it can’t work without an expansion, the original is a failure.
A few expansions I particularly like: Spirecrest for Everdell; Wingspan European; Arts and Architecture for Tapestry; Sunken Treasures for Clank!
I appreciate having expansions that increase the number of players a game can accommodate, but I’d rather have the base game do so to begin with.

Game release: "Wingspan: Oceania Expansion" (PC, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch)
Monster Couch and Stonemaier Games‘ strategy card game Wingspan has added even more birds with its Oceana Expansion. I already covered the base game in this GOG release news two years ago, and it seems that there’s still a lot of interest in the title based on the popular boardgame. Being the second expansion (after the European Expansion), the goal is the same: attracting birds to one’s…

App Expansion Review - Wingspan: European Expansion
App Expansion Review - Wingspan: European Expansion by @monstercouch @stonemaiergames @elizhargrave
The Wingspan app published by Monster Couch Games has been a wonderful app since it came out in October 2020. Online play oddities aside, the game has very few bugs that I’m aware of and it’s a brilliant digital adaptation of the boardgame designed by Elizabeth Hargrave and published by Stonemaier Games. The app even has beautiful renditions of the amazing artwork! You can see my review of the…

30th May 2023
Pink and Blue were late arriving thanks to a debate as to whether the actor Gary Lewis was in the Roland Emmerich film The Day After Tomorrow.  Eventually Blue and IMDb were proved right when Pink found the guy who WAS in the film (Richard McMillan, who bore no resemblance to Gary Lewis whatsoever), but that meant they were late arriving and Plum and Byzantium were already there.  Unfortunately,…

So I’ve been playing some BOARD GAMES and have some RECOMMENDATIONS TO MAKE
Tumblr media
Everdell is a worker placement game where you and your opponents compete over seasons to build the best town of woodland creatures. I can totally see Armello and Redwall fans loving this one, the art is an absolute joy. Everdell’s a great intro to the worker-placement genre. All your resources are generated by how you place your workers and the points game is played in card synergy. You have a hand and a meadow shared by all players giving you lots of good choices. Its worth noting the game’s presentation is a delight from the rubber berries to the tree standee. I highly recommend Everdell, the base alone has provided a number of satisfying games.
Tumblr media
Wingspan! This is a game that’s been popular since its release and for good reason. Wingspan is accessible enough for people who enjoy the art and want a laid back birdwatching game and in depth enough for engine crunchers to have fun tooling their plays each turn and really get into it. Like Everdell A++ presentation, the birdhouse dice tower and wooden dice are wonderful. Of the two expansions I recommend playing out the base for a while, then adding the oceania expansion first. Nectar and the new playmat abilities make acquiring birds much faster so you get to so more. The european expansion is good but mostly adds More to your game, nothing drastic just new birds, goals, etc. If you’ve been debating Wingspan pick it up. I highly recommend it, jts such a different pace.
Tumblr media
Castles of Burgundy is a city planning game. By building different tiles you get access to different abilities. You roll both dice and take actions based on what’s rolled using Workers to tweak your rolls increasing or decreasing them. These rolls give you access to add different tiles to your supply, move tiles from supply to map, or sell off goods acquired with boat tiles. It reminds me of a more complicated Alhambra, if you ever wanted more out of the building aspect give this one a look.
Tumblr media
Feast of Odin is one of the more in depth games I’ve played, a brain burner for sure. In Feast of Odin each player rules a viking settlement placing workers across different costed columns to farm, fish, hunt, raid, pillage, forge, mine, woodcut, go to market, go on long voyages, any number of viking esque activities that give you tiles. These tiles are used in your board like an inventory management sim, tetris-ing odd shapes to fill out your board, seal away negative points, and unlock bonuses. The game has so many options to play like building storehouses or discovering islands that give new areas to fill in, sending vikings out to new offshore settlements that reduce the number fed each feasting cycle, this game is dense but worth it. Watching your plan come together in the late game is satisfying and the limited number of spaces for worker placement adds stakes. If you’re looking for a good 3-4hr first experience kind of game this is a good one.

Played my second favorite board game tonight: Wingspan! This game is perfection because it's simple with enough complexity that some brain power is required to win. You'll also learn quite a bit about birds! I bought the game organizer from @thebrokentoken which can accommodate the European bird expansion. You bet I'll be playing any seagulls I get no matter how badly they throw off my plans. Congrats to @racheldrawsstuff for her pretty decisive victory. . . . . #birds #seagull #catsofinstagram #mycattroubadour #boardgames #gamenight #ornithology #birding https://www.instagram.com/p/B6uMaAVAN_p/?igshid=ta4nj10sogmt

The barred owl (Strix varia), also known as northern barred owl or hoot owl, is a true owl native to eastern North America. Adults are large, and are brown to grey with barring on the chest. Barred owls have expanded their range to the west coast of the United States and Canada, where they are considered invasive. Mature forests are their preferred habitat, but they are also found in open woodland areas. Their diet consists mainly of small mammals, but they are also known to prey upon other small animals such as birds, reptiles, and amphibians.
The adult is 16–25 inches long with a 38–49 inch wingspan. Weight in this species is 500 to 1,050 g (1.10 to 2.31 lb). It has a pale face with dark rings around the eyes, a yellow beak and brown eyes. It is the only true owl of the eastern United States which has brown eyes; all others have yellow eyes. The upper parts are mottled gray-brown. The underparts are light with markings; the chest is barred horizontally while the belly is streaked vertically (hence its name "barred owl"). The legs and feet are covered in feathers up to the talons. The head is round and lacks ear tufts.
The historical lack of trees in the Great Plains acted as a barrier to the range expansion and recent increases in forests broke down this barrier. Increases in forest distribution along the Missouri River and its tributaries provided barred owls with sufficient foraging habitat, protection from the weather, and concealment from avian predators to allow barred owls to move westward. Decades later, increases in forests in the northern Great Plains allowed them to connect their eastern and western distributions across southern Canada. These increases in forests were caused by European-American settlers via their exclusion of fires historically set by Native Americans, by their suppression of accidental fires and by increased tree-planting; to a lesser degree this regional net forest increase was also caused by these settlers' overhunting bison and elk and, in some areas, by extirpating beaver and replacing native ungulates with livestock.
Breeding habitats are dense woods across Canada, the United States, and south to Mexico. The barred owl is particularly numerous in a variety of wooded habitats in the southeastern United States. Recent studies show suburban neighborhoods can be ideal habitat for barred owls. Using transmitters, scientists found that some regional populations increased faster in the suburban settings than in old growth forest. A factor of this suburban success may be easily accessible rodent prey in such settings. However, for breeding and roosting needs, this species needs at least some large trees and can be locally absent in some urban areas for this reason. On the other hand, studies from the Northeastern United States, such as in New Jersey, found barred owls breeding mainly in plots of old-growth woodlands, and rarely successfully breeding in peri-urban areas, in part because of competitive and predatory displacement by great horned owls.
The barred owl's nest is often in a tree cavity, often ones created by pileated woodpeckers; it may also take over an old nesting site made previously by a red-shouldered hawk, Cooper's hawk, crow, or squirrel. It is a permanent resident, but may wander after the nesting season. If a nest site has proved suitable in the past they will often reuse it as the birds are non-migratory. In the United States, eggs are laid from early-January in southern Florida to mid-April in northern Maine, and consist of 2 to 4 eggs per clutch. Eggs are brooded by the female with hatching taking place approximately 4 weeks later. Young owls fledge four to five weeks after hatching. These owls have few predators, but young, unwary owls may be taken by cats. The most significant predator of barred owls is the great horned owl. The barred owl has been known to live up to 24 years in the wild and 23 years in captivity.
The barred owl hunts by waiting on a high perch at night, or flying through the woods and swooping down on prey. A barred owl can sometimes be seen hunting before dark. This typically occurs during the nesting season or on dark and cloudy days. Daytime activity is often most prevalent when barred owls are raising chicks. However, this species still generally hunts near dawn or dusk.  The barred owl is a generalist predator. Prey is usually devoured on the spot. Larger prey is carried to a feeding perch and torn apart before eating. Barred owls have been known to be attracted to campfires and lights where they forage for large insects.
The usual call is a series of eight accented hoots ending in oo-aw, with a downward pitch at the end. The most common mnemonic device for remembering the call is "Who cooks for you, who cooks for you all." It is noisy in most seasons. When agitated, this species will make a buzzy, rasping hiss and click its beak together forcefully. While calls are most common at night, the birds do call during the day as well.
