Former President Donald Trump blamed the United States for "almost forcing" Russian President Vladimir Putin to invade Ukraine.
Trump's remarks came as Russia continued to stall in their struggling "special military operation," ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin more than seven months earlier on February 24, 2022. The ex-President has been critical of how President Joe Biden, who he may run against in the 2024 presidential election, has handled diplomatic relations with Russia. But critics accuse Trump of taking positions seen as favorable to Putin.
During an interview on Real America's Voice, a right-wing network favorable to Trump, the former President criticized the Biden administration. He argued that their "rhetoric" in the months leading up to the Ukraine invasion contributed to Putin's decision.
"They actually taunted him, if you really look at it. Our country, and our so-called leadership, taunted Putin. I said, you know, they're almost forcing him to go in with what they're saying. The rhetoric was so dumb."
He claimed, without evidence, that the Ukraine invasion would have "never" happened if he were still President. He also did not provide any specific examples of how the U.S. "taunted" Putin into invading Ukraine.
Trump also touted his working relationship with both Putin and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky when Real America's Voice host Wayne Root suggested Biden could send Trump to negotiate a peace deal.
"I got along very well with both Zelensky and Putin," Trump said. "If you remember, Zelensky was very nice because when they asked him about the Ukraine, Ukraine, Ukraine hoax—that was the phone call—he looked at them and said 'What was wrong with the call? He did nothing wrong.'"
William Pomeranz, the Director of the Wilson Center's Kennan Institute, cast doubt on Trump's comments in an interview with Newsweek, pointing out that Biden said Ukraine would need to work on its corruption in order to gain entry to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) but that Putin's given justification for the invasion was unrelated to NATO.
"It's something Putin has been thinking about for many years," he said. "I think Putin basically launched this campaign to annex what was two territories—but is now four territories—to expand the Russian Federation. I think this was an example of imperial intent. He wanted to expand his territory and the Russian empire."
He said it will never be known if the invasion would have occurred if Trump won the 2020 election but that he did not believe Trump would have "stood up for Ukraine."
"Did Trump think that he had such a great relationship that he could dismay him from attacking, I just don't think so," he said.
TRUMP FACED CRITICISM FOR PAST RUSSIA-UKRAINE WAR COMMENTS
Trump has faced criticism for several comments about the Russia-Ukraine war. In the days leading up to the conflict, Trump said Putin was a "genius" for moving troops into Ukraine.
"Here's a guy that says, you know, 'I'm gonna declare a big portion of Ukraine independent.' He used the word 'independent,' 'and we're gonna go out and we're gonna go in and we're gonna help keep peace.' You gotta say that's pretty savvy," Trump told Clay Travis and Buck Sexton in February.
In March, he again renewed controversy after appearing to push Putin to release any information he has about Hunter Biden's alleged business dealings in Russia during a conversation on Real America's Voice about an accusation that Biden's company received $3.5 million from the widow of a former Moscow mayor.
"She gave him three and half million dollars. So now I would think Putin would know the answer to that. I think he should release it. I think we should know that answer," he said.
Newsweek reached out to Trump's office and the White House for comment.

What was your first ship and what fandom is it from? Rate Royai from 1-10 and explain why. What songs remind you of WhiteRose? :D
THANK YOU SHAY~! (FOR BOTH THE ASK AND PULLING THROUGH MY RWBY STORM LOL)
What was your first ship and what fandom is it from? My first ship was definitely MirSan from Inuyasha… I mean they’re just so good and probably one of those couples who created shipping lol
Rate Royai from 1-10 and explain why. Royai is like 100000000000000 times infinite in that kind of a scale because they’re just a couple whom is so complex and deep! There’s so many layers to Royai, them as a couple and individually and even by themselves, they somehow still work together??? Idk how to describe it, they’re just perfect in my eyes because they go through so much shit and yet pull through it all together every time NO MATTER how horrible the situations are. They’re just amazing.
What songs remind you of WhiteRose? OHOHOHOHOHOOOOOO oh god… honestly I want to say every love or friendship songs reminds me of them tbh. But if I had to choose a couple, they would be: “Marry Me” cover by Tom Jay Williams, “Born For You” by David Pomeranz, “Let’s Hurt Tonight” by OneRepublic, and “Because You Loved Me” by Celine Dion

NYY @ BOS, 14th July (4-5, win)
That didn’t end quite the way I expected it. Or, you know, the way anyone expected. Back from the All Star break with solid performances in the field and on the mound from Sale, Betts, and Kimbrel (though a couple of heart attacks from the latter), the Sox played a bit of back-and-forth with the Yankees, falling behind in the top of the third, coming back in the same inning, adding on in the fourth, then falling behind again in the 5th, leaving them trailing by a run in the 9th. Then, against Aroldis Chapman, the unapologetic shitbag wife-beater who can throw the ball a thousand miles an hour, they managed a comeback and win without hitting a ball beyond the boundaries of the infield. In fact, Benintendi’s walk-off RBI was a 5-pitch walk from Chapman. The last Red Sox win on a walk-off RBI walk was Ted Williams in 1956, apparently. Also, and I can’t stress this enough, fuck Aroldis Chapman.
Weird, huh? Awesome way to get back into the swing of things... far better, say, than DFAing an underperforming third baseman you only signed to sell stuffed panda toys.
(I’m sad Sandoval didn’t work out, but not terribly surprised. It was an idiotic move at the time and never seemed to evolve into anything more than that. He did lead the team in homers for the first couple of weeks this season though)
Anyway, enough about endangered species, and let’s not dwell on a few too many left-on-base missed opportunities. . Let’s look at the bright sides:
The front four in the lineup all gathered two hits each, knocking in four of the runs the Sox scored. Mookie, Pedey, Xander, and Hanley all played great baseball last night, both on defence and with bats and, for Pedey and Mookie, with a perfect double steal in the ninth that set up the tie and the win.
Hanley went deep, but also very high, with a two-run shot in the bottom of the third that looked almost like a lob. He seems as convinced as I am that he’s about to get very hot, which is cool.
Benintendi walked-in the walk off. That will never not be brilliant and hilarious and what the fuck, baseball?! to me.
The comeback in the 9th all came with nobody out, by the way. It might’ve been more dramatic with two-outs, but I like the idea that the Yankees were doomed from a position of strength, that they couldn’t help but snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Fuck those guys. And fuck Aroldis Chapman.
We won!
The bullpen, after a not-great performance from Pomeranz, locked it down. Nice work, Barnes and Scott.
The Yankees lost! Because we beat them! With a bunch of infield hits and a walk! Hah!

Democrats Want to Compel Interpreter to Testify About Helsinki Summit

Democrats Want to Compel Interpreter to Testify About Helsinki Summit
Tumblr media
U.S. Democratic lawmakers are trying to compel a government interpreter to testify about what was discussed during President Donald Trump’s one-on-one meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, but legal analysts say that is not likely to happen — unless the president allows it.
Trump and Putin met privately for more than two hours at Monday’s Helsinki summit. Only interpreters were present for the meeting, and details of what was discussed remain unknown to anyone else.
Democrats want to compel the U.S. government interpreter, Marina Gross, to testify before lawmakers, while Republicans are blocking the move.
The call for Gross to testify raises questions concerning legality, executive privilege and the ethical code for interpreters who pride themselves on their discretion and confidentiality.
“There is no precedent for issuing a subpoena for the translator,” scholar William Pomeranz told VOA.
Pomeranz, deputy director of the Kennan Institute for Advanced Russian Studies at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington, said he did not expect the translator to be questioned by Congress, “especially because the intent of the [Trump-Putin] meeting was to be an off-the-record conversation.”
Subpoena request
Democrats say that they are concerned about what Trump may have said to Putin and that the circumstances of the summit are exceptional. They cite the fact that the Trump’s administration is already being investigated by special counsel Robert Mueller over Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election, and say the circumstances justify subpoenaing Trump’s interpreter.
Tumblr media
President Donald Trump speaks during his meeting with members of his cabinet in Cabinet Room of the White House in Washington, July 18, 2018.
The White House has been engulfed in controversy since the Helsinki summit, when Trump cast doubt on U.S. intelligence findings that Russia interfered in the 2016 election. Trump has since walked back his comments, saying he does believe U.S. intelligence conclusions.
Pomeranz said the summit “is still clouded in mystery in terms of what were the concrete results.”
He said, “President Putin has suggested there were certain agreements that emerged from the summit. Yet, the State Department and President Trump have not articulated them.”
Tumblr media
Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee, speaks with reporters after a news conference in Washington on July 17, 2018.
The top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, Adam Schiff of California, formally requested Thursday that the committee issue a subpoena for Gross to testify, but he was overruled by Republicans who hold the majority in the House.
Democratic Representative Bill Pascrell Jr. of New Jersey also raised concerns about whether Trump could have used the summit to pursue his worldwide business interests.
“Given this history, the American people deserve to know if Trump used his position or this meeting with Putin to continue to pursue his own financial interests,” he wrote in a letter requesting that the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform hear public testimony from Gross.
Executive privilege
Conservatives in the House are arguing that executive privilege shields a president’s interpreter from reporting to Congress, and many if not most legal scholars seem to agree.
While Congress has an oversight role over the executive branch, conservative lawmakers say that presidents should be able to meet with world leaders and speak candidly without interference from lawmakers.
They also warn that subpoenaing Gross would create a dangerous precedent that could hurt the state of U.S. diplomacy as well as future presidents of either party.
Legal scholars who expressed opinions said it’s likely that only Trump could permit Gross to tell anyone about what she heard. The White House has not said whether Trump has asked her to do that.
Interpreters’ code of ethics
The move by Democrats to compel Gross to testify also raised questions about the right of interpreters to adhere to their code of ethics, which bounds them to strict secrecy.
Interpreters say they view their ethics code of confidentiality similar to the lawyer-client privilege or the duty of priests not to disclose what penitents tell them during confession.
Interpreters also say that it can sometimes be difficult to recall the big picture of a conversation they have listened to after relying on short-term memory to interpret.
Pomeranz said the role of the translator is “focused simply on making the statements, not necessarily of the content of the discussions.”
“To be a simultaneous translator is a very difficult job and it doesn’t necessary mean you are in the position to remember the specific details of the conversation,” he said.
Gross is an employee of the State Department and has served as an interpreter to high-level U.S. government officials before. She was the interpreter for Laura Bush at the Russian resort of Sochi in 2008 and interpreted for former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson in Moscow in 2017.
VOA’s Sarah Williams and Pete Cobus contributed.to this report.
