i just voted for "while my guitar gently weeps" for a poll on the beatles bracket and obviously i stand by it because it fucking slaps but i do feel like tumblr is one of the only places i won't be killed with hammers for admitting i like regina spektor's cover better
“I look at the world and I notice it's turning
While my guitar gently weeps
With every mistake we must surely be learning
Still my guitar gently weeps”.
absolutely criminal of them to not include objectively the best verse of wmggw in the actual album version and it be reserved to just appear on the anthology version because like
excuse me but I NEED the album version's backing track over the lyrics "I look from the wings of the play you are staging / While my guitar gently weeps / As I'm sitting here doing nothing but aging" is that too bloody much to ask
"While My Guitar Gently Weeps" [demo] (Harrison) - The Beatles Anthology 3
On 25 July 1968, George recorded the demo of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" at Abbey Road Studios. The song, which was to be released on the White Album, had been written while George visited his parents in Warrington.
"Around the time of writing While My Guitar Gently Weeps I had a copy of the ‘I Ching - the (Chinese) Book of Changes’ which seemed to me to be based on the Eastern concept that everything is relative to everything else, as opposed to the Western view that things are merely coincidental.
This idea was in my head when I visited my parents’ house in the North of England. I decided to write a song based on the first thing I saw upon opening any book - as it would be relative to that moment, at that time. I picked up a book at random - opened it - saw ‘Gently weeps’ - then laid the book down again and started writing the song. Some of the words to the song were changed before I finally recorded it - as can be seen here:
I look at the trouble
and hate that is raging
While my guitar gently weeps
While I’m sitting here
Doing nothing but ageing" - George Harrison, I Me Mine (x)
