Activities such as painting, gardening, playing a musical instrument or doing needlework can induce a meditation-like state, helping to reduce stress and improve mood. How to get started? Make time each week for a favorite hobby or creative activity. It doesn't have to be a structured or expensive activity; even simple things like drawing, knitting or DIY projects can be effective. By combining mindfulness, exercise and socializing with enough sleep and a balanced diet, you will have a whole arsenal of tools to help you manage stress effectively. Why Your Diet Might Be a Big Deal for Your Mental Health
Can what you eat truly affect your mood? In short, yes. What you eat matters. Food and mood - what's the link? Having a healthy, whole, and well-balanced diet full of vegetables and nutrients can improve your sense of well-being and mood, mental health fluctuations, overall happier outlook, and an improved ability to focus.
The brain is the most vital organ which works 27\7 without resting from blinking eyes to solving critical formulas our brain is involved it. Therefore, our brain needs a constant supply of energy that comes from the food we eat. Think of your brain as a machine that works best only when it gets high-quality fuel. A diet full of vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals nourishes the brain, keeps it functional, and improves mental health.
Serotonin is a crucial chemical and neurotransmitter in the our body that enables us to regulate your mood. We produce most of our serotonin in the gastrointestinal tract where we digest our food. How those neurotransmitters interact with your digestive system and your brain depends on what we eat, which can shape how we feel mentally.
How your food is related to your mental health
We all know that our brain needs neurotransmitters for carrying impulses. One of the most important neurotransmitters is serotonin which controls sleep, appetite, and mood. It also inhibits the sensation of pain. An interesting fact about serotonin is that 95% of it is made in the gastrointestinal tract. Also, your gut bacteria manufacture ≈ 95 percent of the body's supply of serotonin, which influences both mood and GI activity. Thus, the digestive tract environment influences our overall mood.
Research has been done to find out the foods that are good for your health. Studies have shown that a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and under processed foods is associated with lower rates of depression.
Today Nutritional Psychiatry is working on this domain which is mainly concerned with the use of food and food supplements as alternative treatments for mental health disorders. When some people "go clean," they feel better physically and emotionally. Unfortunately, people don't know how much food influences their mental health.
Just like that machine, your brain can also be damaged by unhealthy fuel. Processed or refined foods are that low premium fuel for our brain. Diet high in sugars disturb the regulation of insulin and thus promote oxidative Stress. Many studies suggest the negative correlation between sugar diet and mental health. Evidence also suggests that a high intake of sugars leads to mood disorders such as depression or anxiety.

Preventing mental health conditions
21 studies from 10 countries showed dietary pattern comprising of fruit, vegetables, whole grains, olive oil, and antioxidants reduces the risk of depression. In contrast, a diet full of red and processed meats, sweets , butter, and potatoes, along with less intake of food and vegetables was associated with a greater risk of depression.
A recent study was done on adults which also revealed a positive correlation between anxiety and sugars. Animal research has also confirm these ideas. A study done in 2008 found that rats that went on a sugar binge and then were deprived of food showed a dopamine imbalance that lead to increased anxiety.
Another study published in 2009 found that long term consumption of sugar seemed to impair memory and reduce your ability to fight anxiety, although the mechanisms of how this happened are unclear as of now. These studies suggest that sugar affect your ability to cope with anxiety. 
What is a healthier diet?
It is a diet that is:
Free of processed foods (pastas, white bread, microwave meals).
High in vegetables and moderate quantities of fruit (which contain natural sugar).
Foods of different colors (carrots, blueberries, kale, strawberries).
Foods with little to no added sugar.
Meals that are high in protein, fiber, minerals like magnesium, and fatty acids.
What is the best diet for mental health?
Recently researchers are experimenting with diets for treating mental disorders. A study was done on people consuming a Mediterranean diet full of fruits and vegetables. Findings of the study revealed, that people had significantly greater improvements in depression symptoms. Furthermore, rates of remission were significantly low among such people.
Mediterranean diet example:
Get your starch with having whole grains, starchy vegetables, and/or legumes.
Fill up on plenty of whole foods such as fresh fruits and veggies.
Add in healthy fats to your diet, like raw nuts and olive oil.
We need to understand that our biggest enemy is processed foods to live a healthy life. These foods are high in flour and sugar. Such foods conditioned the brain to crave more and avoid fruits and vegetables. Most such foods are addictive as they stimulate reward pathways (dopamine). To boost mental health, we need to start eating sufficient number of fruits and vegetables.
A processed food is any food that has been altered in some way during preparation. Food processing can be as basic as: freezing, canning, baking, and even drying.

Additionally, food containing omega-3 fatty acids is also good for health. Lastly, we should eat plenty of green leafy vegetables because they in particular are brain protective. Nuts, seeds, and legumes, such as beans and lentils, are also excellent brain foods.
American Dietetic Association has found unhealthy eating patterns associated with mood disorders. People with mood disorders often eat either too much or too little. Thus, they either gain weight or feel exhausted
Mindful Eating
Another important factor is paying attention to what we eat and how we feel while eating it. The nutritionist also recommends writing your diet in food journals since most people are not fully aware of their eating habits. It can help you track your calories and can even help you to stop if you find yourself overeating in stress.
Brain Food
Our Nervous System needs nutrition to build new cells and tissues and to form protein. Therefore, needs a balanced diet that is rich in a variety of foods in adequate amounts. That is why nutritionists suggest eating a variety of food rather than eating the same meal every day.
Following are the nutrients that should be included in a healthy mental diet:
Complex carbohydrates
Omega-3
Proteins
Fatty acids
Eating Tips to improve Meatal Health
Avoid sugary and processed snacks which cause energy spikes and make it difficult to concentrate.
Increase intake of healthy fats such as olive oil, coconut oil, and avocado. This will help your brain work better.
Substitute healthy snacks like fruit, almonds, hard-boiled eggs, baked sweet potatoes with unhealthy snacks.
Make a list of your diet plan including only healthy foods and try to stick to it.
Avoid shopping when you're hungry because you'll be more likely to make bad impulsive purchases.
Pay attention to where and what you eat. For example, avoid eating in front of the television because it can be distracting and lead to overeating.
Eat regularly to maintain blood sugar levels to prevent fatigue irritability.
Keep yourself hydrated. Even mild dehydration can have an impact on your mood, energy level, and concentration.
Increase your overall intake of fresh fruits, and vegetables.
Every meal should include some protein. It contains an amino acid that helps your brain manage your mood.
Wisely intake caffeine because it affects your mood and disrupts sleep. Some people also report that it makes them angry and nervous.
Keeping your posture upright while eating is also beneficial to our digestion from biological point of view. 
Sharing meals
Eating meals with others has many benefits on psychological, social, and biological health. It a habit which brings a sense of rhythm and regularity in our lives. While eating together we also get to reflect on our day and makes friends. Moreover, Talking and listening also slow us down which allows us to chew our food properly.

Mental Health and Mindfulness Activity Research
With us deciding which activities we will be holding in our festival, I decided to do some research on how the activities we brainstormed are used to help with relieving and reducing anxiety and stress (which is very common amongst our target group: students) as well as general mental health.
Meditation:
Standard medical treatments for anxiety are anti-anxiety medications, cognitive behavioral therapy, or a combination of both.
Anxiety disorders affect about 40 million Americans.
Therapy is time-consuming and expensive.
Anti-anxiety medications work fast, but are some of the most addictive substances around and are not intended for long-term use.
Latest research shows that meditation works as well as commonly prescribed anti-anxiety medications!
A regular meditation practice not only can reduce anxiety symptoms, it also can reverse the damage caused by anxiety.
Researchers from Johns Hopkins University sifted through over 18,000 mindfulness meditation studies to determine its most effective uses. They concluded that the number one use for meditation was anxiety relief.
Other studies support that meditation benefits mental disorders of all kinds including generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety, panic disorder, agoraphobia, depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, binge eating disorder, bipolar disorder and addictions.
Meditation can reduce rumination, even in those with lifelong mood disorders
Meditation Balances Brain Chemicals
Meditation increases the level of GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), a neurotransmitter essential for feeling happy and relaxed.
Feeling anxious, easily overstimulated, and overwhelmed are common signs that you might be low in GABA.
Meditation can lift your mood by increasing levels of serotonin, another neurotransmitter vital to happiness.
Meditation also reduces cortisol, a stress hormone that, in excess, significantly contributes to anxiety, depression, sleep disorders and memory loss.
The brains of people who regularly meditate show measurable increases in the amount of gray matter, the volume of the hippocampus, and the thickness of the cortex.
Conversely, the size of the amygdala, the area of the brain region associated with fear, anxiety and stress, decreases and becomes less reactive.
Meditation increases blood flow to the brain, improves neural connections between various areas of the brain, and enhances neuroplasticity.
Painting and Drawing:
Shawn McNiff writes in Art Heals: How Creativity Cures the Soul "healing through art is one of the oldest cultural practices in every region of the world," and "Art adapts to every conceivable problem and lends its transformative, insightful, and experience-heightening powers to people in need."
Art therapy is a distinct field and art therapists are trained and educated in both art and psychology
Making art enables you to feel and express gratitude by helping you to observe and see beauty where others may not. It also gives you an outlet for expressing some of your anger and frustration, as well as your personal political and world views.
Art can help you discern feelings and express thoughts that are difficult to articulate. Engaging with the arts and creating something is a way of engaging with and being in relationship with yourself, helping you to know yourself better. The process of creating art opens channels of communication beyond those of the purely verbal, dissolving barriers caused by words or our own internal censors, helping us to see ourselves, and others, more fully and clearly. In so doing it connects us more deeply to ourselves and to each other. If you are working in class with other people the atmosphere becomes one in which there is a mutual give and take of ideas, and a spirit of generosity.  The creative process helps to create new relationships and foster existing ones in a positive productive environment.
Therapeutic Photography:
Therapeutic photography involves taking, analyzing and using photos for the purpose of personal healing, growth, or understanding, whether done consciously or unconsciously. By actively constructing, exploring and reflecting on photographs by pairing it with creative writing, you are able to learn more about yourself and how you see the world.
Photography can be a form of mindfulness (or present state awareness), similar to meditation, which is proven to help people suffering from depression and anxiety. Often when you’re taking photos, you can find yourself in “flow”, which brings many health benefits similar to meditation like calming the mind and providing relief from stress.
By creating photos that you are proud of, you can start to build self-esteem. Similarly, sharing your photographs and getting positive feedback from others can help you continue to build confidence and become empowered, which can help you become more comfortable expressing your opinion, thoughts, and story with others. A 2014 study found that those who took part in creating visual art had a significant increase in psychological resiliency. The neurotransmitter dopamine can be increased through this process, which can be lacking in those suffering from depression and has been found to immediately start to help prevent depressive-like behaviours.
A person’s perspective on themselves and the world can be gradually explored and changed through the process of taking photographs, analyzing them and discussing with others. Neuroplasticity tells us that our brain has the ability to change constantly throughout our lives and grow new connections.
People are using therapeutic photography techniques to help themselves and others overcome depression, anxiety, chronic pain and much more.
Zentangle Art:
Zentangle is known to many artists and craftivistas as a way to create structured designs through drawing various patterns. Basically, it’s a specific way to draw images, most often in black pen on white paper. 
Zentangle has become an international phenomenon that now has applications in stress reduction, education, therapy and even motivational training.
Zentangle itself may be relatively new, but the basic principles involved are as old as the history of art. 
It includes ritual [a core practice in ancient and contemporary arts] and mirrors the symbols, designs and patterns of numerous cultures [Mayan, Maori, Celtic, and American Indian, for example] from ancient through present times. And like “doodling” it is based on a human behavior in which one refrains from planning and allows lines and shapes to unintentionally emerge.
It Teaches How to Own Mistakes: Using a pen on paper requires that you risk making mistakes; in fact, most tangle art has at least some misplaced lines which cannot be erased. Tangling teaches you how to incorporate what seem like “mistakes” into the overall pattern of the design. It’s a great metaphor for everyday life—nothing is ever perfect, but how you adjust to imperfections [mistakes or the unexpected] in life is what really matters.
It Reinforces “Aimlessness.”: Many Zentangle enthusiasts highlight the tangle doodle process as a form of mindfulness. I like to think of tangling as a form of "creative aimlessness." Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh observes that we need to cultivate aimlessness in life rather than continually striving to be “number one.” Zentangle teaches us not to rush and to take good care of ourselves in the present moment—after all, the present moment is all there is.
It’s Self-Soothing: Repetitive creative work, in and of itself, can be calming and self-soothing. In fact, some of the preliminary research on the Zentangle process indicates that engagement in the process has measurable relaxation benefits. This is particularly true if you accept this process as one with no expected outcome other than the enjoyment of putting the pen to paper and staying open to whatever emerges.
It’s Simple: Zentangle art only requires a black pen and paper; you can do it just about anywhere.
Henna Hand Tattoo:
Henna, or Mehndi, is an evergreen plant. A member of the Loosestrife family, henna originally comes from Egypt, a country that is still one of the main suppliers of the plant. The henna plant typically grows in the drier climates of India, Northern Africa, and the Middle East.
The red-ish brown dye is made by crushing the dried leaves and then mixing the fine powder with other natural and acidic ingredients such as eucalyptus oil, lemon juice, or black tea.
Perhaps Henna's most well observed quality is it's natural cooling effect, which offers a delightful tingling sensation to the skin (similar to chewing spearmint gum and drinking cold water). Once this property was discovered, people of the desert, used henna to cool down their bodies. By making a henna paste and smearing it on themselves, they achieved an air conditioning effect.
Weaving Therapy:
Experts refer to the Relaxation Response:  The rhythmic repetitive movements seem to put us in the present moment, quietening our minds that are so often full of busyness and distractions, and research shows that these repetitive movements have a powerful calming effect – both from our hands moving as well as the motion of moving our eyes from side to side.
Knitting involves a complex, bilateral and co-ordinated pattern of movements and it uses up a lot of brain capacity, which means the brain has less capacity to pay attention to other issues, so it’s a good distracting technique for people with chronic pain. And the repetitive movement involved in knitting enhances the release of serotonin, which can help people to feel calmer and happier. The rhythmic nature of the movements is calming and leads to a meditative-like state.
Besides the many physical health benefits, such as being a pain and stress reliever, knitting also connects you to a social circle and community of fellow knitters, and this is especially important in those who feel isolated, depressed, and lonely.
“Knitters produce objects that people enjoy. And knitters will tell you that just stroking their yarn cheers them up,” says a knitting devotee.
Knitting and crocheting is the one daily therapy and relaxation tool you can take anywhere with you – you get peace of mind…and a fabulous scarf!

Scott is working hard on getting the creamery built. Every day that does not bring adverse weather sees him out there building the walls. There are also lots of other odds and ends and details he adds in there that breaks up the monotony. I’m am so blessed to have such a wonderful life here with him. Our life has purpose and meaning as we both work hard to bring you the benefits of traditional hand-made artisan cheese.
The winter drags on. Seems like a long one this year doesn’t it? Every year winter is the same 13 weeks on the calendar but the weather conditions during that period of time alters our perception of time, I think.
There is a common winter ailment called seasonal affective disorder. I’m sure some of you know of what I speak. It’s a type of depression that’s related to changes in the seasons. Symptoms can begin as early as the fall and continue into the winter months. Occasionally, SAD causes depression into the spring or early summer, but that is rarer. Spring usually brings a rush of relief.
I experience SAD every year. This year is different. I’ve significantly changed my diet and it shows. While I can still feel the effects of this winter season, it is muted compared to previous years. I feel kind of heavy sometimes; slightly weighted down by life in general. 
As an aside, I generally just suffer through it. However, there are things you can do. Light therapy or phototherapy is the most common treatment. Some schools of thought attribute the issue to reduced vitamin D from the sun as there is less light due to the length of the day.  More severe cases may require medication or psychotherapy.
The symptoms may start as a minor issue such as having trouble sleeping or a general loss of interest in doing anything. Low energy, feeling sluggish or maybe agitated for no reason. As the season progresses, the symptoms get worse and worse. In the past it has seemed overwhelming to me. And then, poof, spring arrives and it all evaporates like mist.
Let’s talk about how cheese might help with that. Did you know that cheese has nutritional properties that stimulate our happy hormones? First, let’s cover the basic nutrition in cheese.
Cheese and Nutrition
Cheese is a delicious and tremendously efficient source of nutrition. It supplies many valuable nutrients, including proteins, sugars, vitamins, minerals, and trace elements. A 4-ounce piece of solid farmhouse cheese, for example, supplies more than half the adult nutritional requirements for protein, fat, calcium, and phosphorus as well as significant portions of vitamins A, B2, and B12. If you compare the nutritional content of a 3.5-ounce chunk of a hard, aged cheese such as Cheddar or Emmental to an equivalent amount of chicken eggs (two eggs are about 3.5 ounces), the cheese contains about twice as much protein and one quarter the cholesterol.
The miracle of evolution has ensured that milk is an extremely nutritious food. After all, without it how would mothers, down through the eons, have guaranteed the survival of their babies? Cheese concentrates the nutrients in milk. It’s a highly efficient method of getting vital nutrients for our bodies.
Another advantage to cheese is that its nutrients are “predigested” by bacteria and enzymes during cheesemaking and aging. That means the process of breaking down the proteins, fats, and sugars began before it was savored on our palette and began the journey to our tummy.
Plants in the pasture have absorbed nutrients from the soil; the dairy animals have extracted those nutrients, packaging them in the form of milk. That’s another place that a lot of gathering nutrients has already been done for you. Your body has to devote less effort to processing cheese than it does with many other comparably nutritious foods.
Cheese Tastes Good
Cheese tastes good and satisfies us. A big reason for that is the fat. There are beneficial fats available in milk. Many of them work as antioxidants and also provide fat-soluble vitamins good for our skin and other organs. In cheese, milk fats undergo lipolysis, which breaks them down into more easily absorbed and beneficial fatty acids, some of which in turn enable us to metabolize the fats from other foods.
CLA
Cheeses, especially those made from the milk of grass-fed animals, are a good source of conjugated linoleic acid, or CLA, a highly beneficial nutrient. In small studies involving animals, CLA has been shown to prevent heart disease and several types of cancer. It also appears to enhance the immune system.  CLA is considered a fat-reducing fat. You heard that right. There are studies on this. Let me give you some info from one study. I’ll put a link in the show notes.
Jean-Michel Gaullier, PhD with the Scandinavian Clinical Research Group did the study. It was a relatively small number of participants. 180 men and women were followed for a year. A third got a typical off-the-shelf pill of 80% CLA. Another third got a 76% CLA syrup formula, disguised in a capsule. The last third took a placebo capsule of olive oil.
No one had to change their diet or exercise habits. All reduced their calorie intake a little bit during the study. Likely that was due to tracking with a food diary. That can really wake you up to what you are actually consuming. As far as exercise, all got about the same amount.
The results were:
Both CLA groups lost weight – about 4 pounds; the placebo group stayed the same.
The CLA syrup group had a 9% body fat loss; the CLA pill group had 7% body fat loss; the placebo group had no body fat loss.
Both CLA groups had similar improvements in muscle mass.
Good news ay? Losing weight was good, but I found the conversion of fat to muscle mass to be the most interesting to me.
CLA is found naturally in beef, lamb, goat and dairy products.
Facts About Fat Content
Because cheese contains fat, naturally, it raises concerns. There are some valid concerns there. Not for the fat, but for the calories. A little bit of cheese goes a long way. Real cheese delivers a lot of nutritional bang for your buck and a lot of caloric bang for your buck. The fat is the culprit there. The key is to eat moderate amounts along with your other dietary choices. Let’s talk about the fat content of various cheeses.
Contrary to appearances, hard, grainy cheeses such as Parmesan may actually contain more fat than creamy, luxurious ones such as any triple cream cheese. The rich triple cream types are labeled “75% butterfat” while a Parmigiana–Reggiano claims around 35% butterfat. The trick is that cheeses are labeled by percentage of fat in their solid materials, not in their total weight.
Cheeses retain water, even after much of it is extracted during cheesemaking. The less water a cheese retains, the harder or denser it will be. A dense cheese with, say, 50% butterfat, could actually deliver more fat per serving than a soft, gooey one with 70% butterfat.
Lactose Intolerance
Let’s talk about lactose intolerance. Well–made, aged cheeses are actually one of the few dairy products that will not cause problems for many people with this difficulty. The first and most important step of cheesemaking, alongside protein coagulation, is the conversion of lactose into lactic acid – the souring or fermentation action of lactic acid bacteria on milk. The small amount of lactose left over after active cheesemaking ends is further broken down by glycolysis during aging.
What this means is that for people who have trouble digesting lactose, it’s not a problem because the digestion has already been done for them by the cheesemaking and aging process. Give it a try. You, too, can be a happy cheese eater. Speaking of cheese making your happy. Why is that?
Why cheese makes people happy
A wonderful piece of info I ran across wherein a neurologist talks about how cheese literally makes you happy. Dr. Thomas C Morell is the neurologist. Link to the article will be in the show notes. The title of the piece is Nutritional Neuroscience. The central core of the article is using nutrition to help heal TBI or traumatic brain injury.
There is some really good information about how the brain functions along with how and why nutrition is important to maximize brain function. Later in the article he gets specifically to cheese as “the first food that will help your brain.” He cites cheese as an extraordinarily rich source of proteins and amino acids. One of those amino acids is Tyrosine. Dr. Morell’s comments on the relation of tyrosine to neurotransmitters in the brain are noted in the article.
Some quotes from the article: (again, reference in the show notes) “The body does not produce Tyrosine so it must be obtained from outside sources, of which cheese contains very high concentrations. We quickly began to realize that cheese is one of nature's perfect foods for the body and for brain functioning! Furthermore, the pleasure of eating cheese in its multitude of varieties is not just for the sensuous pleasure of taste and smell, but actually has nutritional importance that will help the neurotransmitters in your brain. Cheese not only supplies calories for metabolism as well as being an excellent source of Calcium, but contains proteins and amino acids that are intricately associated with manufacturing many important brain chemicals.”
Then he talks about how cheese makes people happy. “Cheese can make people happy. Why? It starts with Tyrosine which is a building block for many of the neurotransmitter chemicals in the brain. It can improve mood and well-being particularly during times of stress. Tyrosine is a substrate of many well-known neurotransmitters including adrenaline, norepinephrine, and dopamine. Cheese may be one of the basic primordial foods that improved the performance of our brain, with deep connections from the olfactory bulb to the parts of our brain responsible for memory and emotions. Cheese may just be the perfect food to capture the nutritional-emotional duality that our bodies and brains need!”
I find it so refreshing that our medical profession is starting to look at food as nutrition for building, maintaining, and healing the body. “Cheese contains high levels of casein which is the primary protein found in milk. As casein is broken down and digested it is converted into Tyrosine. Casein is also broken down into the chemical casomorphin, an opioid molecule in the same family as morphine. This may explain some of cheese's addicting qualities!”
I can relate to the addicting quality of cheese. As my diet has improved, my urge for eating too much food is strongly diminished. However, once I start eating cheese, I may overeat if I don’t pay attention. “There are many receptors for the Tyrosine molecule in the olfactory bulb where our sense of smell courses through the Central Nervous System. What You Need
1 pound (4 cups) of 2 or more cheeses of your choice – Gruyere, Emmental, Appenzeller and of course our Pinnacle
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1 cup dry white wine — such as Sauvignon Blanc
1 clove garlic — minced
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1 tablespoon kirsch – Kirsch is a clear colorless fruit brandy. You may substitute a brandy of your choice
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg – ground
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard (optional)
Assorted Fondue dippers
What to do
Grate all of the cheeses. In a medium bowl, combine the cheeses with the cornstarch, tossing thoroughly to coat all pieces.
In a stove-safe fondue pot or large heavy saucepan, bring the wine, garlic, and lemon juice to a simmer over medium-low heat. Add the cheeses to the simmering liquid a little at a time, stirring well between each addition to ensure a smooth fondue. Once smooth, stir in the brandy, nutmeg, and mustard.
Arrange an assortment of bite-size dipping foods on a platter. Carefully pour the fondue into a fondue pot. Serve with fondue forks or wooden skewers.
Dip and enjoy!

If using a crock pot, no need to wait for the wine and lemon to simmer. Put it all in there and stir as needed until the desired consistency is achieved.

Study: 12 Percent of Depression Could Be Prevented With 1 Hour of Exercise a Week

Exercise has long been viewed as an antidote to depression, but for those in the throes of a depressive episode or even a blue mood, it can be hard to summon up the motivation to get moving. Recent research suggests, however, that even a minimal amount of exercise may be enough to combat depression in some people - as minimal as one hour a week. The study was large, involving nearly 34,000 adults who were healthy, with no symptoms of common mental disorders, at the start of the study.
The participants were followed for 11 years, during which time it was revealed that people who engaged in regular leisure-time exercise for one hour a week were less likely to become depressed. On the flipside, those who didn't exercise were 44 percent more likely to become depressed compared to those who did so for at least one to two hours a week.1
"The majority of this protective effect occurred at low levels of exercise and was observed regardless of intensity," the researchers said, adding that, "assuming the relationship is causal, 12 percent of future cases of depression could have been prevented if all participants had engaged in at least one hour of physical activity each week."2
Study author Samuel Harvey, associate professor of workplace mental health at the Black Dog Institute and the University of New South Wales, told Time, "There is good evidence that physical activity can help people recover from depression Our study takes this a bit further and shows that exercise may also have a role in preventing people developing depression in the first place."3
In this case, part of the protective effect of exercise was attributed to its social and physical health benefits, though there are many routes by which exercise is good for your mental health and brain.
Staying Active Is Good for Your Mood
In my 2008 interview with Dr. James Gordon, a world-renowned expert in using mind-body medicine to heal depression, he stated that physical exercise is at least as good as antidepressants for helping people who are depressed, in part because it increases serotonin in your brain and in part because it increases brain cells in your hippocampus, which are sometimes reduced in people with depression. He's far from the only one to come to this conclusion.
In 2013, a meta-analysis published in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews found that exercise is moderately more effective than a control intervention, which in some cases was pharmaceuticals, for reducing symptoms of depression.4 Separate research published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine found that aerobic exercise "at a dose consistent with public health recommendations" is an effective treatment for mild to moderate depression.5
In addition, a 2017 study revealed that exercise appears to be a "promising and acceptable" treatment for adolescents and young adults with depression, adding that, for best results, the exercise should potentially be engaged in multiple times per week over eight or more weeks and involve:6
Supervision
Aerobic activity
Moderate to vigorous intensity
Similarly, but in contrast to the featured study, a 2014 study reviewing exercise program variables in the treatment of depression also found supervised aerobic exercise engaged in three times a week at moderate intensity for a minimum of nine weeks was useful for treating depression.7 So there are still some questions about what type of exercise, what intensity and how often is best for treating depression, but what's clear is that exercise should be on your agenda if you're struggling with depression or low mood.
In addition to aerobic activity, mind-body exercise like yoga has also shown promise. For instance, Iyengar yoga, which focuses on detail and precise alignment of posture combined with deep breathing, reduces symptoms of depression in those who are not taking medication or who have been taking the same medication for at least three months.8
Still more research, this time involving nursing students, a population among which depression is common, found that both physical exercise and mindfulness meditation were effective in managing depression (with the meditation being even more effective than the exercise in this case).9
Exercise Boosts Calm, Helps Buffer Stress - Try This 3-Minute Mood Booster
Exercise benefits your brain and mood via multiple mechanisms, including creating new, excitable neurons along with new neurons designed to release the GABA neurotransmitter, which inhibits excessive neuronal firing, helping to induce a natural state of calm10 - similar to the way anti-anxiety drugs work, except that the mood-boosting benefits of exercise both occur immediately after a workout and continue on in the long term.

It's a derivative of the Sanskrit word "bliss," and a deficiency is associated with increased anxiety and stress.12 Even in the immediacy, if you're looking for a quick way to boost your mood, doing a short, high-intensity workout will likely do the trick. Undergraduate students who were more physically active had higher pleasant-activated feelings like excitement and enthusiasm overall than people who were less physically active, and they reported feeling more of them on days when they engaged in more physical activity than normal.13
Please keep in mind that physical activity should include not just "exercise" but also plenty of non-exercise daily movements, such that you're in motion more so than not (except while you're sleeping). Non-exercise movement is a foundational piece of optimal health - even more so than a regimented fitness routine, but ideally you should strive to do them both.
If you're currently sedentary, you can start by simply sitting less but, ultimately, I recommend aiming for at least 7,000 to 10,000 steps each day and limiting sitting to less than three hours. That being said, if you want to give your mood a boost right now, try the nitric oxide (NO) dump exercise developed by Dr. Zach Bush, which I demonstrate in the video below. In addition to stimulating your brain, this simple exercise will help you maintain homeostasis in your body, and it takes only about three minutes.
I suggest doing this workout two to three times a day, unless you're injured or recovering from a hard workout, and it may serve as a way to help keep your mood elevated. As you'll see, you can do it anywhere - and I do, at the airport, waiting for luggage, in the lounge. Don't worry about how it looks, focus instead on how great it makes you feel.

Sleep Is Also a Must for Relieving Depression
While the focus of this article is exercise, I do want to point out the importance of healthy sleep for a healthy mind. Lack of sleep has long been linked to depression, but it was thought that insomnia was a symptom of depression and not the other way around. It now seems that insomnia may precede depression in some cases and may even double your risk of becoming depressed.14
Further, sleep therapy is regarded as a valuable form of treatment. A 2014 study funded by the National Institute of Mental Health found that 87 percent of depression patients who resolved their insomnia using cognitive behavior therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) had major improvements to their depression, with symptoms disappearing after eight weeks whether the person took an antidepressant or a placebo pill.15
Unlike sleep hygiene therapy, which focuses on regular exercise, avoiding caffeine and alcohol at night, and promotion of other healthful habits for restful sleep, CBT-1 teaches people to reserve their bed only for sleeping, and involves the following guidance:
Establish a regular wake up time
Get out of bed when you're awake
Avoid eating, reading, watching TV or performing similar activities in bed
Avoid daytime napping
The study found that those who overcame their insomnia using this program recovered from their depression at nearly twice the rate of those who did not. People with evening chronotypes, otherwise known as night owls, also tend to have more symptoms of depression compared to those who go to bed early and wake early,16 so strategies to regulate your circadian rhythm, like exposure to sunlight during the day and avoidance of blue light at night, could benefit your mental health.
Ideally, go to bed by 9 p.m. or 10 p.m. and wear blue-light-blocking glasses after the sun goes down. EMFs are also known to disrupt sleep, so take steps to lower your exposure, especially at night while you're sleeping.
Options include turning off your Wi-Fi at night or, even better, don't use Wi-Fi and switch to wired Ethernet (and hardwire as many devices as possible in your home and office to avoid Wi-Fi fields). You can also install a Faraday cage (copper- and/or silver-threaded fabric) around your bed. Getting back to exercise, this will also help to improve your sleep, which is yet another way it may lower your risk of depression.

How Eating Disorders Relate to Substance Abuse
For people who struggle with an eating disorder, sitting with your closest friends and family around a table spread with food is a terrifying prospect. It’s what makes this time of year, with a bevy of social holidays centered around eating and drinking, so tricky.
Interestingly enough, it’s also a tough time of year for those of us recovering from drug or alcohol addiction. So, we decided to take a closer look at the relationship between eating disorders and substance abuse.
Eating Disorders and Substance Abuse Share the Same Stigma
There is a considerable stigma associated with people who have an eating disorder. When you think of someone who is struggling with an ED, you might think of female celebrities that appear on the covers of gossip magazine with the words “deathly thin” or “disappearing.” 
However, eating disorders don’t only affect women. Ten percent of cases detected are in males. Typically, the onset of eating disorders will start at a young age (12-25 years). According to Medical News Today, someone with anorexia has 5-8 times greater risk of dying early in life while bulimia doubles that risk. Furthermore, eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental health disorder. 
Somebody with anorexia has a 5.8-times greater risk of dying early, compared to healthy individuals with no eating disorders. Bulimia doubles the risk of premature death.1 
Spotting someone with an eating disorder an be more difficult than you think. Not everyone shows the same physical or psychological signs of disordered eating. While it might be physically apparent for some people (excessively thin), it’s also common to maintain a healthy body weight or sometimes even overweight. 
Recovering addicts or alcoholics notoriously develop substitute addictions in the way of excessive exercise or orthorexia.
So, What is the Actual Definition of an Eating Disorder?

Typically someone with an eating disorder seeks to control their food intake and their weight.  A skewed body image is one of the most common symptoms. For example, they will see themselves as “too fat” even if they are in fact, dangerously thin. They may participate in dangerous behaviors such as excessive exercise, binge eating (eating large amounts of food), purging behaviors (self-induced vomiting), use of laxatives or diuretics, and substance abuse. 
There are different types of eating disorders which include anorexia nervosa, bulimia, EDNOS (eating disorder not otherwise specified). 
Substance abuse like eating disorders, are influenced by genetic, biological, environmental, and psychological factors. Scientists estimate that genetic factors account for between 40 to 60 percent of a person’s vulnerability to addiction, including the effects of environment on gene expression and function. Multiple shared neurotransmitters are thought to be involved in both eating and substance use disorders.2 – National Eating Disorders Association
50% of people with an eating disorder (ED) are also abusing drugs and alcohol.
What Do Eating Disorders Have To Do With Substance Abuse? 
There are various beliefs around whether we should consider eating disorders a type of substance abuse. Conflicting opinions aside, there is no denying the staggering similarities not to mention the rate of co-morbidity.
According to the National Eating Disorders Association, nearly 50% of people with an eating disorder (ED) are also abusing drugs and alcohol. So, if someone has an eating disorder, they are 5 times more likely to abuse drugs or alcohol than someone without an ED. 
Sarah* struggled with disordered eating and spoke of her relationship with drugs and alcohol as a coping mechanism.
“An eating disorder often goes hand in hand with drugs, alcohol, and depression,” she explained. “For me, my eating disorder came first, and I found that drugs – either prescription or otherwise – helped me get through the day. Just living became too much. It was too painful.”

How to Help Someone With an Eating Disorder
When you haven’t experienced addictive behavior first-hand, it’s really hard to understand it. Simply being around our loved ones is difficult. Especially when they seem consumed by their eating disorder or alcohol or heroin. It’s like watching the events of a natural disaster unravel right in front of you. The nightmare of watching something terrible happen and you want to scream out, but when you open your mouth, all that comes out is silence. 
Show empathy. You may not understand exactly what they are going through but let them know you are here for them regardless.
A defining characteristic of addiction is isolation. When someone feels alone, they will find a way to make that feeling go away. A way to handle a world that seems unmanageable. 
“I think the drugs helped me get through a deep dark hole that I had dug myself into,” Sarah said of her drug use and ED. “Drugs made my life more livable. It allowed me to connect and go out with friends without food being the main focus.”
