Is a positive presence among everybody: Yes, a soldier sure is a tough-hard individual who is determined to follow their duty, but Scarlet is the opposite. She maintains her duties and also motivates and cheers others up to keep moving and never surrender, as taught by her father. The reason why others notice when Scarlet is present with them, they feel calm and encouraged.
Emotional, but also dangerous: Sure Scarlet looks like she's a sweet presence among everyone, but at the same time, we shall not forget she's SAS-trained. When things get serious, she gets serious. During some missions (1 and 2), she has shown remarkable strength and courage by eliminating enemy soldiers in combat, as if she's a different person. The cheerful presence Scarlet holds among others has another dark side inside that she never reveals, but towards her enemies.
Can indulge with anyone, and is respectful: She'd love to make friends or teammates! It doesn't mean she doesn't give importance to anyone, but she especially bonds a lot with Soap. They two have been childhood friends since the start and everyone notices how close they both are and thinks if they two are a couple. Even if Soap is her best friend and he has a superior rank, she'd still respect him as her Captain. But sure, personally, they two engage like they used to.
Very empathetic: Whether it's a random person or not who is dying in her arms, it breaks her. It happened once when she tried to save a person who was losing their life and in the end they couldn't make it. It makes her want to blame herself a bit, thinking she didn't do her duty right, even if everything wasn't in her power. Also, if she sees anyone in distress, she's able to console and help them in time of need, the reason why Scarlet is able to sympathise and understand others well.
BACKGROUND STORY
Born as Samantha Wright, she lives in a small town in England with her father, Albert Wright, who is a former SAS-soldier under the codename "Bolt", and mother Elizabeth. When Scarlet was a toddler, she used to hear stories from her father about him working in Special Air Services, an elite special forces unit, and retired the day when his one leg was brutally injured that made him unable to walk or run.
Those stories gave Scarlet an idea to also join the SAS like him, but her father chuckled and said that right now she was too young to do so. Sometime later, she met John MacTavish, who recently moved into her neighbourhood from Scotland, but wasn't happy that he shifted away from his homeland. She wanted John to be her friend, and make him familiar with the surroundings so he'll get used to everything and love staying at his new home. And soon, they two grew closer, and became best friends.
They two had a similar goal — to join the defense. And one day, that day had to come between the two, when John had to leave for military school. Bidding her best friend a bittersweet farewell, unsure what future has for them in between, John encouraged her to follow her dreams. Taking that as a motivation, Scarlet kept John close to heart, while continuing her aspiration to join the SAS.
Her father got to know about her plan, saying that it won't be easy, since the SAS had the toughest selection processes. That sure unsettled her for a while, but didn't make her back off from her decision respectively. Instead, she learnt a couple of exercises, tips and tricks on self-defense from him that mentally and physically prepared her fully at the same time.
When she recruited herself in the selection process, it was an absolutely different experience for her. The way her mind drastically changed during the training quite traumatized and scared her, knowing what it feels to be in the SAS. But, keeping her father's words by her side, she didn't let the weakness and fear sink her in and moved on further. At times, she was ridiculed by others that she'd never be able to complete the process, but chuckled it all out instead.
The day came, when her hard work paid off, and she finally became eligible for the special forces. It was a blessed feeling for her, as if luck always stood by her side. And this is where, her journey begins..

Vincent Foredale, Earl of Edgewater - The man behind the title
Vincent Rupert Alexander August Foredale is the only son of Dominique Margaret (granddaughter of the Duke of Fydelia and daughter of his second-born son, the Cordonian ambassador to England) and the Earl of Edgewater, Rupert Archibald Foredale. He was named after an ancestor who was known for spying for both sides during the Wars of the Roses.
Despite Rupert's reluctance to break the tradition, due to Dominique's previous complications, he was born at the City of London Maternity Hospital on April 25, 1968. Vincent was the first Foredale baby not to be born on the Edgewater or at the family London Estate. In August of the same year, he was baptised at Moorefield Church. Queen Elizabeth II and his son, the Prince of Wales, were their godparents.
Contradicting the fears of breaking the tradition, Vincent was a healthy and playful baby.
Until the age of five, Vincent spent his days between the nursery and the gardens, playing with his neighbour and best friend, Matthew Sinclaire. Together, the two boys spent countless hours doing all kinds of mischief: scaring the swans of Edgewater Lake (and running away from them), playing with the hunting dogs (something Rupert had prohibited), playing pranks on the employees of both estates or simply eating mud like all the children do (yes, rich children eat mud too).
Determined to make his son a man in his image, Rupert hired a strict tutor who imposed on the boy a rigid study schedule, to which the Earl added even more rules.
Encouraged by his mother, Vincent did his best to meet his father's high expectations. Nevertheless, before his son's achievements, the Earl reacted with indifference or sharp criticism. Feeling that his best was never enough made Vincent grow apart from his father through the years.
For that reason, going to Eton at the age of thirteen was almost a liberation for him. Although the young viscount often chose books and chess, Vincent, along with Matthew and other companions, lived the typical young boys' adventures.
One of the things he learned during that time was how to ride a motorcycle. A colleague who lived in the city taught him and the other boys in an open field near the college.
The exception was Miss Campbell (code name among Vincent's friends, 'Miss Candy Eyes'), the young man's first love. The girl worked after school at her parents' candy store in Windsor. Despite Matthew being the first to try to ask her out, the girl preferred to take out the quiet young Vincent. After those rendezvouses at Windsor, Vincent came back to Eton covered in sugar and cheap lipstick.
Still at Eton, Vincent discovered another passion – writing. Writing had become an escape for the teenage Vincent to deal with the turbulence of the adventure of growing up. His first experiences were some cheesy poems dedicated to Miss Campbell and a small Shakespearean-inspired play written for a literature class project. He tried to write a short novel but became too frustrated with its and his imperfections to continue the story.
After finishing his studies at Eton, and again following the old family tradition, he continued his studies at the University of Cambridge. There, he studied History and Political Science.
After a couple of years' break, Vincent ventured again into the universe of writing.
Inspired by the Cambridge atmosphere, Vincent drafted many stories, wrote several poems, and finished his first novel, a romance between an English spy and a French prostitute during the Napoleonic Wars. It had some flaws, but an editor showed interest in the story.
Unsurprisingly, Rupert did not allow the negotiations to move forward because "It was a waste of time, and being a writer was not a dignified occupation for a future Earl, especially a quixotic run-of-the-mill writer like you."
Feeling discouraged, he quit writing for years.
Despite Vincent having graduated with distinction, Rupert did not let him help with the family business or get a steady regular job. And God knows how Vincent tried. He knew his duty and knew he was capable of doing it.
At the same time, his mother was trying to force him on every high-society girl he came across. Dominique insisted that getting married and having children would give him a purpose in life until he became an earl. To make her point, she didn't tire of talking in the case of his best friend, Matthew Sinclaire. The master of Ledford Park, once an epic rake, had fallen in love, and now it was an example of the wonders conjugal happiness brings to a man. In fact, Lydia Sinclaire herself had confirmed she was finally expecting.
He dated some of those women to please his mother, but never felt a connection with any of them. Furthermore, he did not wish to drag anyone into a relationship or marriage of convenience.
Frustrated and somewhat out of spite, Vincent allowed himself to get lost in the bohemian life of London's high society for some time. However, that only made his heart feel emptier. Fearing for his friend's sanity, Matthew helped him find a suitable job at the British Museum that not even Rupert could raise objections to.
In the meantime, Theodore and Matthew joined the countess on the mission to find him a girlfriend. The viscount was exasperated with the matchmakers.
One night, the Sinclaires threw a party at the Trafalgar St. James. As usual, he had spent the night running away from potential suitors and making small talk. Fed up with the fancy party, Vincent was considering leaving when he heard a voice that filled the imposing ballroom. It was the most beautiful thing he had ever witnessed. His heart stopped, but Vincent had never felt so alive.
Bewitched, he didn’t mind exposing himself to shame in front of the hundreds of illustrious guests to get a chance to see her again. Even if nervous, Vincent played and sang with all his heart, hoping to reach her heart. To this day, some of the party guests still remember his surprising performance.
Maybe Mary couldn't be considered extraordinarily beautiful by most people, but there was something unique about her that made him want to look at her for the rest of his life – Would be her bright eyes? Her sweet smile with a mischievous promise on her lips? The unruly waves of her chocolate hair?
If her voice and beauty had amazed him, her soul entranced him. Mary was different from any other woman Vincent had encountered.
Although, in her words, she was "poor, but the queen of herself," Mary had no problems opening her heart, talking about her dreams, the wounds she carried, the flaws she had... Mary was completely genuine in everything she said and did.
That night, he knew he was hopelessly, deeply, and wholeheartedly in love with her. When Mary fell asleep on his chest, Vincent thought he would die of happiness. Kissing her was as natural as breathing. It was the meeting of two souls.
For almost two years, Vincent lived in seventh heaven. He never felt so happy as he was with Mary. Whether it was a weekend away or a Sunday afternoon spent playing card games on the floor of Mary's flat (she was a very good player), all the moments together were sublime, the pinnacle of freedom and happiness. He was finally discovering his true self.
However, there was a shadow between them.
Outside their love bubble, his world was complicated and hard-hearted. He wanted to protect Mary from the weight of his duties, even if it involved some lies and omissions. Mary herself was in no hurry to enter this world. Although the world had changed, she was aware that Vincent would need some time.
Still and all, Vincent proposed to Mary, and she said yes. He still didn't know exactly how or when, but the queen of his heart would also be the queen of everything that was his.
In his dreams, Vincent would have offered her the family engagement ring. However, for now, the discreet diamond would have to be enough to witness their love.
But life tricked the young viscount. Weeks later they got engaged, Vincent found out his father had made some ruinous investments. After years of spending on pomp and pageantry, the family had no funds available. They were at risk of losing their properties and possessions. Matthew was working with him to find a solution, however, the more they dug, the more problems they found.
His heart was torn between his duty and Mary.
When his father proposed a marriage with Henrietta Marlcaster (widow of the fat cat Mr. Marlcaster), Vincent seriously considered eloping with Mary, but after some reflection, he decided to pretend to accept the arrangement to buy some more time.
The plan seemed to work for a while until, on one fateful February Sunday morning, his dreams shattered. The Sunday Times pompously announced to the world that the Viscount Vincent Foredale and the esteemed Lady Henrietta Marlcaster were engaged to be married. He didn't have time to break the news to Mary. She found out while waiting in line to buy bread for their Sunday breakfast.
Seeing Mary devastated because of him was the worst pain he had ever experienced. Even though she refused to see him, and wedding preparations had been hurried, Vincent kept fighting to get out of the engagement.
For the first time in his life, Vincent faced his father. Mary was worth a war with a battalion of enraged Rupert's.
Obviously, for his parents, giving up on the marriage with Henrietta was off the table. They needed her money to stay afloat. Besides, it would be a scandal.
The young viscount threatened them that he would give up everything to marry Mary. Rupert laughed disdainfully in his face.
“If she was, rich or had a title, maybe something could be done. But a singer coming from nowhere... that would be the final nail in our coffin.” Dominique appealed to her son.
After this argument, Vincent left home for a few weeks.
He looked for Mary everywhere. It seemed as if she had simply vanished into thin air. Vincent was desperate.
As the weeks passed, the creditors increased the pressure. His mother has started selling things. Every time he came home, something was missing. One day, on one of the rare occasions he was at Edgewater during that period, Vincent found his mother talking to an auctioneer. He was appraising the bust of Venus, a piece he knew that meant a lot to her. It was part of her dowry and one of her last connections to her homeland.
Seeing the sadness in her mother’s eyes made him feel guilty and selfish. Their family legacy was dying piece by piece.
"We mean more than ourselves. We are our legacy." Vincent had grown up under that mantra. That idea haunted his thoughts day and night.
During those troubled days, Vincent made the most difficult decision of his life. Since he had failed in love, he was determined not to fail in his duty. Even if that duty was making him deny his heart and principles.
So, on the 2nd of May 1994, he married Henrietta Marlcaster at Moorefield Church, in a sumptuous ceremony paid for by the bride.
As agreed, after the wedding, the new viscountess paid off half of the family's debts. The other half would only be paid when she had a child in her arms, her security for the rest of her life.
Pressured by the urgency of the situation, Vincent tried his best. His herculean effort paid off and shortly after, Henrietta got pregnant, and Harry was born on March 30 of 1995.
The duty was fulfilled: the debts were paid, Edgewater was rising from the ashes, and there was a new heir.
Satisfied that everything went as he had planned, Rupert changed his attitude towards Vincent, treating him like a "prodigal son." Unfortunately, the late redemption was not enough to heal their relationship. Vincent could not forget or forgive what had happened in his childhood, nor forced marriage, much less Mary's disappearance. Although he had no proof, Vincent had always suspected that it had been his father's work.
When Rupert Foredale died at the turn of the millennium, Vincent did not cry for his father's death.
He worked hard, but within a few years, Vincent had returned every penny to his wife.
Though, that didn't heal his heart. To ease his pain, he focused on his new family. Although the marriage started out as a nightmare, Vincent built a (most of the days) cordial relationship with his wife, maintaining a peaceful coexistence.
On the other hand, Edmund (Henrietta's son from her first marriage) and Harry were the centre of his world. Initially, Edmund did not react well to either the marriage or his brother's birth. After almost a year of attempts to get closer to the boy and a lot of tantrums, Edmund let Vincent into his life. The Earl was determined to learn from his father's mistakes and give his children the love and support he never felt.
At the same time, the new Earl resurrected the family's patronising and charitable spirit. The region's inhabitants noticed the difference in attitude between father and son. Vincent was approachable and kind-hearted, therefore, everyone felt free to come to him.
In all those years, there wasn't a single day that Vincent didn't think about Mary. He had never stopped loving her. He wondered where she was, if she had got married, if she had children, if she had moved to the USA... Every day he missed her more and regretted letting her go. Sometimes, he thought to look for her, but the more time passed, the more ashamed he felt about his actions. The last thing he wanted was to hurt her again with his ghost.
On an unusually sunny morning in December 2004, life had the biggest surprises in store for him.
When the friendly Mrs. Daly told him she was a friend of Mary's, Vincent almost fell out of his chair. It filled his heart with hope, just to be broken by the fatal news: Mary was dead. Vincent felt the cold taking over his body. For a few seconds, he couldn’t breathe. The pain in his heart spread throughout his body. Vincent thought he was going to die right then and there.
While he was still lost in the wave of pain and despair, Mrs. Daly revealed another plot twist: Mary had a child. He had a daughter. Their daughter. If only he had known that Mary was pregnant... How would their daughter be like? Would she be happy to meet him? There was a whirlwind of emotions in his heart. Vincent had never felt so sad and so happy in his life.
When Mrs. Daly told him the girl's name was Beatrice, his heart skipped a beat. Several times during their long pillow talks, they had talked that if they had a daughter, it would be Beatrice, "like the Dante's muse."
He was amazed. Vincent felt his heart melting in love as he saw the pictures of Beatrice. Tears fell uncontrollably down his cheeks, despite the wide smile on his face.
She was his second chance to love Mary, and he wouldn’t let his love down again.
Since day one, Beatrice was the light of his life, not only because of the love she represented but also because of the girl she was and became through the years. Father and daughter had a strong bond, which sometimes caused some misunderstandings between the children.
After Beatrice came into his life, Vincent felt like he was reborn. If life had given him that second chance, maybe it was time to pursue other dreams. Mainly encouraged by his daughter, Vincent came back to writing, and his "run-of-the-mill writing" won over the English and success beyond borders, as Mary had always predicted.
Matthew's death threatened to tear him apart. A part of himself had also been reduced to ashes in that fire, but now Vincent had a new responsibility - taking care of the legacy of his best friend and of his most precious treasure - Ernest. And Vincent did it with all of his heart.
Unfortunately, he continued to be haunted by the shadows for the rest of his days.
This is Vincent Foredale. A man who suffered as much as he loved. A man who fought for his dreams, silencing the mockers. A man who rebuilt his home from the ashes. A man who sacrificed himself for those he loved. A man who genuinely sought to help the disadvantaged. A man who never allowed the bitterness of life to harden his heart.

Leto, his apartment, and his office all have the distinct scent of warm amber, patchouli and vanilla musk. He keeps in touch with his mother and stepfather who still live in Avignon. Growing up in a bilingual household, he is fluent in both French and Mandarin; however, due to studying in Cambridge, he is also fluent in English. Since taking the position at Mount Phoenix, he is learning Korean, but currently has to utilize a magical artifact (his necklace) to actively translate the speech of those around him and his speech for them. Though one may expect his job to take a toll on his own mental health, Leto has a very healthy work-life balance, though he is not above making a house call at two in the morning for someone in need.

His lineage was never any secret. His mother's family came from old money and his mother owned a very successful bed and breakfast in Avignon. A beautiful and creative woman, Madeleine Leroux had caught the attention of a guest whose extended stay lasted a month. Morpheus had been straightforward with his identity as well as his feelings, but when she relayed the news of her pregnancy, their relationship became complicated as Morpheus could not remain in the mortal realm for much longer. Nine months later, Leto was born during a partial lunar eclipse on Winter's Solstice. Father and son kept in frequent contact through the boy's dreams. When Leto was five years old, his mother married a travel author named Gregorie who brought his own child into the family, a seven-year-old son named Michele. Though Michele's extroverted personality starkly contrasted the quiet and shy Leto, the boys became fast friends once bonding over their love of music, stories, and running. Playtime became daily adventures as Leto discovered his powers, making their imagined situations all the more real and fantastical. Their youth was very happy. However, while Michele was quite the indiscriminate lover frequently in and out of relationships, Leto felt no attraction toward anyone. In fact, the moment he realized someone was 'catching feelings' for him, Leto felt exceedingly uncomfortable and retreated from interacting with them entirely. He began to think that something must be wrong with him, but Michele assured him that "your soul knows what it wants, and it's not them, so don't worry about it so much". There was no pressure to just give it a try, no reassurance that someday he would find 'the one', only loving support that Leto was just fine the way that he was.
Tragedy struck in high school when after a few minor falls, Michele was diagnosed with ALS. To someone so active and full of life, it had felt like a death sentence and Michele fell into a deep depression; believing his life was over as he withered away, he attempted to take his own life on more than one occasion; the entire family took the hit, but Leto tried to maintain some realistic optimism. He understood the depths of his brother's depression and the hell he lived in, but rather than let Michele surrender completely, Leto insisted his brother live as much as he could while it was still possible. The pair took a gap year from school and traveled the world, experiencing all the things on Michele's bucket list until he could no longer walk; but this time, despite being confined to a wheelchair, Michele had Leto to sculpt his daydreams into reality and experience entire adventures without even leaving his room. For Michele, death would be the greatest adventure of them all. One night, during a dream visit with his birth father, Leto asked Morpheus for a favor. Michele passed peacefully in his sleep dreaming of hiking through the Alps and watching the sunset. With his brother's death, a piece of Leto's soul died as well, but when his mother and stepfather thanked him for what he had done for Michele, it was through their gratitude that Leto found a new purpose in life: He would become a psychiatrist and specialize in palliative care, depression, and grief.
He studied harder than he had ever studied before, was accepted to and graduated with honors from the University of Cambridge, remaining as a psychiatry resident at Addenbrooke's Hospital specializing in hypnotherapy and grief counseling. As it was one of the most prestigious trauma centers and research hospitals in the world, he encountered patients of all kinds, including staff. In Fall 2023, Morpheus came to Leto in a dream and told his son that it was time to return the favor he had requested years ago, that Leto's services were needed elsewhere, that it was time to go to Mount Phoenix. Leto accepted this new mission without hesitation and tendered his resignation the following morning.

POWERS: Dream walking--When a person is unconscious, Leto is able to enter their dreams and observe as an outsider. While he is unable to influence the dream itself, he is able to notice details and information the dreamer may not remember which is helpful for individuals struggling to recall traumatic events or repressed memories.
Fantasy Sculptor--When someone is daydreaming, he can make the imagined setting as real as possible to the daydreamer, affecting all the senses, as though they are physically living in that fantasy world they created. It is an illusion only he and the dreamer can experience and he is limited by the dreamer's own mind, only able to create what they imagine.
STRENGTHS:
Creative--He has an overactive imagination that is abundant with ideas for nearly any occasion.
Compassionate--He will instinctively help out someone who needs it.
Adventurous--Leto is very open-minded when it comes to trying new things.
Supportive--Though soft-spoken, he is a proverbial cheerleader when it comes to supporting another's passions.
WEAKNESSES:
Flighty--Leto makes daily to-do lists and keeps several synchronized calendars to ensure he does not forget his obligations because he is easily distracted depending on the circumstances.
Withdrawn--Large crowds and new social interactions make him nervous.
Public Speaking--Anxiety takes the helm when he is made to speak in front of large groups.
Physical Intimacy--While he has no difficulty sculpting romantic scenes for the daydreams of others, personal intimate situations with him make Leto extremely uncomfortable.

What Was The "New Woman" and What Does It Have To Do With Victorian Femlock?
(This is an ongoing series about the historical case for how canon Sherlock Holmes and John Watson could have been women. It is leading up to the launch of my new web novel series on Patreon, Ladies of Baker Street—a sapphic/wlw, Victorian women adaptation of Sherlock Holmes.

Throughout this series, I have been making the case that Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson could easily have been women in the late Victorian era. So far, we’ve looked at how a woman Dr. Watson could have earned her medical degree from the University of London in 1878, and how a woman Holmes could have attended a Cambridge-affiliated women’s college in the mid 1870’s as well as why she may have decided to quit.
I also posted an excerpt to my version of Holmes's first case, which takes place while she is a university student at Girton.
But what about beyond education? What opportunities were there for women to lead the kind of lifestyle necessary for canon Holmes and Watson? Would they have had the freedom to live in a flat on their own? Ride around London in cabs by themselves? Go to clubs and Turkish baths and investigate crime?
Earlier in the Victorian era, it would have been a lot more difficult. At this time, women still were legally dependent on the men in their lives. Laws in 1857 and 1858 made divorce accessible to middle-class couples (though women still had to prove more than just adultery as grounds for divorce, unlike men, who only had to prove adultery), and they also specified that a woman could keep her earnings and not have to give them to her ex-husband.
But it wasn’t until 1870 that married women could keep their own earnings, and not until 1882 that married women could own their own property.
In spite of this reality, authors were creating stories about female detectives since 1861 (Revelations of a Lady Detective, by W. S. Hayward), a good 16 years before Sherlock Holmes even existed!
So the idea of an independent, clever, resourceful woman going on adventures and solving crimes was seeding itself into Victorian consciousness for decades before the first actual British woman detective was transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in 1922.
Outside of literature, the view of what women could (or should) be began changing in the mid-1800’s. And one of the primary reasons was simple: there was an excess of unmarried women.
By the 1861 census, there were 2.5 million women who weren’t hitched. And in a culture whose ideal is “every woman a wife,” this is a big-ass problem. It was such a big deal that it became known as “The Woman Problem.” What to do with all these “redundant” women? (Yeah, that’s what folks called them.) If you can’t marry them off, then who is going to provide for them?
The obvious answer is that they need to be able to provide for themselves. And that, gentle readers, was one of the main motivators of the culture at large to educate women and open up the workforce to them.
For wealthy women, the whole “angel of the home” bullshit was still very much the ideal. Just because the laws were changing doesn’t mean the expectations were. And working-class women had always had to, well, work. But for middle-class women, this change in perspective was life-altering.
If women weren’t always going to be under the care of a man, then they were going to have to live on their own. They would have to have jobs. They’d have to take transportation to those jobs. They would be spending their wages on their own.
There would be entire industries that could rise up to cater to the needs of these newly independent women.
It didn’t happen quickly. It took decades. But the world that Holmes and Watson were born into at the start of the 1850’s was drastically different than the one in which they came of age in the 1870’s.
And starting in the 1880’s into the 1890’s—at the height of Holmes’s career and the partnership with Watson—these changes multiplied rapidly.
The mid 1870’s saw the creation of mixed-gender clubs (as in the equivalent of Watson’s gentlemen’s club or Mycroft Holmes’s Diogenes club) and Turkish Baths that were either solely for women or who had a dedicated wing or special hours for women only.
Department stores began appearing in the 1870’s as well, providing women with specialized and safe shopping environments. Hotels and restaurants created dining rooms especially for women, as did tea shops.
Hansom cabs provided discreet and safe travel for women who could afford them. The rising popularity of the tricycle in the 1880’s and the bicycle in the late 80’s and 90’s gave women yet another way to move about freely.
The Rational Dress movement in the 1880’s challenged the restrictive feminine fashions of the day.
The Women’s Suffrage movement during the last part of the century pushed for the inclusion of women in political life, though women would not achieve full suffrage in Britain until 1928.
Women began living together in boarding houses run by other women as well as in their own flats. These new freedoms opened up opportunities for queer women to live together in relative safety, especially since sex between women was not criminalized (mainly because it was not thought that women had much of a sex drive, and “mere” affection between women was viewed positively until the concept of sexual orientation began to be more widespread in the early 20th century).
Literature of the 1880’s and 90’s was especially fascinated by the rise of independent women. In 1894, Sarah Grand coined the term “New Woman” in describing the profound changes to women’s independence. She was only one of several women writing novels about this new breed of determined, adventurous, and free-spirited woman, including Olive Schreiner, Mona Caird, Ella D'Arcy and Ella Hepworth Dixon.
And as for fictional women detectives? The trend gained steam during these decades too, with even the Strand featuring the exploits of Grant Allen’s women detectives, Lois Cayley and Hilda Wade, in the late 1890’s.
None of this is to say that society greeted the New Woman with open arms. Far from it. They were ridiculed and often harassed in the street and accused of being unnatural and “mannish” (oh the horror!). But little by little, they created space for themselves and for the women who would come after them.
Holmes and Watson, with their education, career-mindedness, and intrepidness would have been quintessential New Women, down to the emerging genre of women detectives. They would have faced prejudices and still had to fight to overcome barriers, but they would not have been unique in that way—they had plenty of company.

cdrama rec/review: le coup de foudre

If You Like, You’ll Like: the reply series, sad-looking dogs that are loved very much, because this is my first life (VERY similar male lead), sibling love, my sunshine but if people were nicer and had significantly better hair, multiple couples that are all a lot of fun

PREMISE
flashback to 6-8 years ago (because the OP here can’t remember lol): it’s desk selection day in qiao yi’s classroom! a very dramatic moment for all high schoolers, qia yi has to select who she sits next to. because she’s at the bottom of the class ranking, she gets last pick, which essentially narrows down her choices to that creepy kid who writes love poetry to every female student in the class and yan mo, the scary genius student who has placed 1st in their class since...forever.
taking a gamble, qiao yi goes with yan mo. yan mo eventually agrees to tutoring qiao yi outside of class and they become friends. then...friends? if you know what i mean. it’s very sweet and cute. only problem is that yan mo is both a genius and from a Family of Means, and so is already planning on attending cambridge (yeah, fucking cambridge) after graduation. not wanting to separate, yan mo asks qiao yi to come with him and she agrees to study hard so she can get accepted to a university in the UK, too.
but then, well, bad shit happened.
qiao yi ended up staying in their home town, yan mo left for cambridge, and we got two v heartbroken teenagers on our hands.
4 years later, yan mo returns after studying in the uk, and by chance they end up bumping into each other. angry because qiao yi hurt him, yan mo puts up an ALOOF AND COLD AND I DONT CARE AT ALL front that she sadly buys. but after he leaves for the big city to pursue a business opportunity, qiao yi harnesses some amazing big dick energy to go after him, in a sort of inverse DONT LET HER GET ON THAT PLANE! move. very abba.
the plot bounces between their (and their friends’) high school years, their lives as reunited adults, and their future lives as married folks. i love it very, very much.
MAIN CHARACTERS
zhao qiao yi
as a high schooler, qiao yi was a quiet girl with low self-esteem, who consistently ranked at the bottom of her class and was always attempting to retreat into her school tracksuit like a turtle. despite this, qiao yi has some solid friends and is always kind if somewhat shy or uncomfortable in certain situations. as a adult, qiao yi works as a television producer and is clearly more confident.
she buys truly awful graphic t-shirts as thank you gifts that one feels obligated to wear. falls for scams easily. will help you fold 1000 paper stars for your boyfriend even if she hates your boyfriend because she’s ride or die like that. look at how cute she is no one is allowed to be mean to someone as cute as this.
yan mo / “frank”
if you liked se hee in because this is my first life, you’re in luck because here is a 10% angrier version. at first, yan mo seems cold, aloof, snobbish, pretentious, arrogant...
okay, but he’s ALSO got a lot of feelings and will help people out. well, at the start of the show, he’ll help two people out. but that expands to like 10. so, progress! in high school, he falls for qiao yi in the typical Cannot Spit It Out fashion, buying her sentimental cans of coke, PUTTING IN ONE EARBUD SO SHE CAN LISTEN TO THE BEATLES WITH HIM, feeling Weird about her tying his tie, and single-handedly ruining a for-profit afterschool tutoring business in about 30 seconds, because they weren’t teaching qiao yi anything, and he knew he could do it better. tbh he completely fucking destroys a lot of things and people in under a minute. #ruthless
he’s very protective of qiao yi and rather than explain it, here is a clip from the special episode where yan mo confronts another student who left a love confession meant for qiao yi in his desk by mistake (subtitles have to be selected under settings, but it’s subbed in english):

zhao guan chao
zhao qiao yi’s twin brother, who has always placed 2nd in their classes after yan mo. despite his high grades, he comes off as a laidback teen heartthrob and has a reputation for being a flake and a playboy. BUT he’s legit a chill dude and clearly popular for a reason--he gets along with (almost) everyone. he loves his sister and is extremely protective of her, especially since she’s so shy and has low self-esteem for Reasons That Will Be Explained in the Tragic Backstory. he’s such a good brother. the best brother. also looks out for qiao yi’s best friend, wu yi. understands the value of shoes.
hao wu yi
qiao yi’s best friend, and another classmate of The Crew. i say this with so, so much love, but she’s got a lot of chaotic dumbass energy. struggling along the bottom ranks with qiao yi during high school. she has the worst taste in men as a teenager, falling for the guy who literally bullied her in like. ep 2. thankfully she’s got qiao yi and guanchao.
the trio are close, and that doesn’t change as they grow up. wu yi ends up becoming a novelist who writes pop and steamy romance novels and has a significant teenage girl fanbase. it’s amazing.
fei da chuan
my boy. another classmate, he, qiao yi, and wu yi make up the official Dumbass Trio of their high school class and have adorable adventures + solidarity in it. he’s also yan mo’s uncle. somehow. because rich people families are wild. while he’s got a place to live, he more often than not crashes at yan mo’s, who Does Not Like It. but da chuan does not notice or care.
abrasive but 100% sincere about everything and toward everyone. people will think he’s an asshole or a gangster but then he’s secretly feeding abandoned kittens in the corner or something. as an adult, has the best business casual outfits. serves as a big brother figure to a lot of people, but qiao yi in particular. cannot, cannot fucking do math.
SUPPORTING
“alicia” / cheng youmei. an old family friend of yan mo’s who is very posh and rich and dignified. studied abroad with him at cambridge, and is cold toward qiao yi after arriving back in china. cosplays B)
teacher gao. everyone’s high school teacher who later owns a bar that seems to be there only for dispensing advice. seriously. there is no way this bar is economically sound as the only customers you ever see are gao’s students coming in one at a time for Wisdom and you never see them pay for anything. also the bar has no fucking roof and is directly above traintracks. i have hang-ups about this bar
lin shu. yan mo’s mother. very sweet and pretty and a ballernia turned program director. is almost never home but clearly loves her son. du chaun’s sister. somehow.
zhao suyin. qiao yi and guan chao’s mother. one of her kinks is roleplaying condor heroes characters? okay okay okay
tian weimin. qiao yi and guan chao’s stepfather who works as police officer. best dad award. he’s so sweet and corny and peak dad humor. he loves them kids & they love him back
grandpa. yan mo’s dog in high school. a very old basset hound with sad eyes:
dollar or d. i cant tell you anything about him, other than he used to be a stray and yan mo says he’s ugly, which, rude.
DRAWBACKS
plot...hm. there’s SOME plot, but this is about characters + romance + friendship + family. if you’re looking for scheming mothers-in-law or tragic car accidents or secret destinies this isn’t the one for you. similar in vibe to Reply 1988 (they even watch the show in the show :’D / make references to it)
OKAY SO every plot summary i’ve seen says that yan mo is in a relationship with someone else when he gets back to china. no he is not. i say this because it was a huge turn off for me/initially put me off watching the series. he is definitely a one-and-only type. there’s no cheating in this show. lmao, hell, neither of the mains are even interested in anyone else but each other
i liked du chuan and his love interest a lot, but they definitely didn’t get as much screen time as the others
while it’s clear qiao yi + yan mo are the mains, another couple gets a lot of screen time as well. this might be a skip if you don’t like multiple couples/secondary relationships in a show
i surprisingly enjoyed the high school storyline a lot more than the adult one? which is super weird for me, but idk i was sad when it was over because it was so cute.
some...weird technical decisions. every once in a while, the camera will have like a nostalgia filter and then it disappears and then the edges get a bit blurry and idk it feels very film school 101 to show that what’s on screen is a ~memory. the soundtrack/music is sometimes also too loud--to the point where it can drown out the actors (particularly janice wu in the high school arc, since qiao yi is soft-spoken)
REASONS TO WATCH
the lead actors (janice wu + zhang yujian) are legit two of my favorites and they have great/easy chemistry. all the actors are amazing. everyone’s loveable
SIBLING GOALS the zhao twins are amazing and they’re both each other’s biggest fans. gaunchao had some really heartwarming brother moments
i love love lmao. this spoke to a lot of my favorite dynamics: exes reunited/having to work together, childhood sweethearts reuniting as adults, “gangster” and princess, childhood friends turned lovers, bickering couples, cold man who actually has a lot of feelings, lots of people being overprotective, idk. everything was just great. 0 complaints on any of the ships.
i genuinely liked every character other than that one piece of shit poppa zhao. even alicia, who’s put into the stereotypical rich bitch role, was actually really fun and subverted a lot of expectations for this trope
it’s just. real cute y’all. probably my favorite cdrama and definitely in my top 10 (maybe 5?) dramas overall.
