Or at least what's known about them.

Starting at zero, The Man's concept art has been uploaded to Pixiv by his creator, Seiji Tanaka, here and here. He was originally submitted as "Zeusman", based on the Greek deity of the same name. Even back then, he was supposed to be the true identity of Strong The Budo, except that in this rendition, he is a choujin cloned from the cells of Neptune King.

While Goldman was likely created by Yudetamago themselves, his Akuma Shogun identity is a refined version of "Vikingman", who was submitted by Kobayashi of Tokyo. Early color illustrations of Shogun tend to depict him with pure red armor, which may have been a leftover from his submission.

Silverman's redesign process for his appearance in the 2011 run was extensively documented and released in the "JC55巻 56巻 発売記念品 2016 夏" booklet. His first rough design is completely different from the finished product, mirroring Shogun even moreso than his final design.

Mirageman is one of the two Kenichi Ishii-submitted Origins, the other being Justiceman. Both him and Thingman, designed by Ken Hiroshima (who also worked on Painman together with Kentaro Sakamoto), were first shown as choujin submissions in Vol. 25 of Nisei Tag, named "Mirage" and "Doppelman" respectively. Thingman is nigh identical to his submission, but Mirageman used to somewhat resemble a circuit board, with PCB traces and pads covering his body.

Abyssman is credited to Masashi Omori and Takamasa Minato, presumably being a combination of multiple submissions, as the Fan Book commentary implies.

Ganman is famous for not only being a combination of two submissions, but also having his appearance modified after his initial reveal. His moose features were taken from Mikan's "Elkgin" and then applied to WANI's "The Cyclone".

Yudetamago later clarified in the Vol. 47 Q&A that his design was upgraded to make him look more dignified, as he's supposed to be on the same level as Akuma Shogun. I've uploaded a catbox album with all the panels I could find of Ganman's original appearance here, but the original WEB version of the chapter can't be found in its entirety anymore.

Crowman/Karasuman was submitted by Takayuki Wakisaka. His name and design have stayed exactly the same, except he's way thinner here than in the manga.

The same Takayuki Wakisaka also appears to have submitted Psychoman's Grim Reaper identity. His new white priest-like design was probably refined by Yudetamago, since an Instagram post by Takashi Shimada shows what looks like concept art, as well as an alternate design.

As of right now, this is all that is known about the design processes of the Perfect Origin. Feel free to add or correct anything if you happen to have more information.

Yet Another JP Art Book Haul

Yes, I've got quite a bit again. But hey, these purchases have been spread out across a month-ish and weren't that expensive (all things considered). So I'll break it down.

Return To Avalon Fate Art Works

Originally, I wasn't planning on buying this art book. It was an additional piece of another auction I was bidding on for all the Heaven's Feel production materials, but the auction ended up skyrocketing to around 400 dollars which I really wasn't looking to cough up for some art books. Instead, after the auction ended I found this art book by itself for around $25 which is a pretty decent steal when you consider it's a whopping 12 inches high and 8.6 inches wide.

It's just full of full color artwork and illustrations from all over the place, and it has a full timeline of the art works featured in the book at the end. It's a super cool look at the history of Fate (and Type-Moon) that I'd definitely recommend to fans of the series. Just don't get suckered into the eBay listings that can cost well over double and even into triple of that $25 price tag.

(Side Note: The art book is available in English, though at the very steep price tag of about 73CAD)

Heaven's Feel: Presage Flower and Lost Butterfly Key Animations

Let me just say, Spring Song Key Animations is a pain to get. Nobody sells it, and those that do charge an arm and a leg. Despite that I'd still love to own it one day (alongside all the materials for Heaven's Feel). Regardless of wants and desires though, these books are pretty, very pretty. Getting to see under the hood of Ufotable's stunning work is just amazing. Also, a quick side note (and one I really should have taken pictures of), all the pages have an outline in the color of their cover so the edges of the pages appear the same as the cover. Also, the covers get lighter with each volume. They're very well thought out and beautiful books.

Record of Lodoss War Anime Guide & Art Books

It's still crazy to me just how old these books are. The OVA for Lodoss came out in 1990. Now I don't think I'm that young, but it came out before I was born. And here I have these books that look like they haven't aged a day, it's crazy.

Now truthfully, there's not a huge amount of real art to these books. They're very much guide books before they're art books, but what it does include in terms of explicit art is incredibly interesting and appealing.

Dagashi Kashi Key Animation

I am a big Kotoyama fan, I love both of their works and really hope that the Dagashi Kashi manga can make it here. So of course I'd jump on a Dagashi Kashi art book. It was interesting though, it's incredibly difficult to find listings for this art book anywhere on the internet. Just one of those items that hardly seems to exist, but it wasn't even that expensive. I was at the mercy of a single seller, but I got this for around $55 which isn't the end of the world.

It really is cool though, it reignites hope in me for LidenFilms to drop an art book for Call of The Night. But until then I'll happily enjoy my Dagashi Kashi art book. (Also, cool enough they include both the OP and ED in this art book, and it reads left to right. Weird, right?)

Now for the big guns

Bakemonogatari Production Note & Key Animation Note Vol. 1

This was a bit of a shock, to say the least. The Bakemonogatari Key Animation Notes typically go for around $100, so getting it and the Production Note for half of that was wild. Of course, I'm fighting an uphill battle with the latter volumes of the Key Animation Note almost exclusively going for that $100+ price tag.

Anyways, really impressive work as expected, and one of my favorite approaches for a Key Animation collection as it adds a small screenshot of the finished product at the bottom corner of each page. Also, the sheer volume of these production notes is wild. There's 3 whole books in the first one with over 1100 pages total. Crazy stuff.

The Garden of Sinners Storyboard Collection

This was a big find. I'm a massive sucker for storyboard collections (have even more bought/ordered), so finding the 7 volume run for Garden of Sinners is awesome. For first time buyers though, it might seem a little odd. The books are oddly small. Like a regular JP manga volume kind of small, in contrast to the massive scale of various art books.

Regardless of size though, these things are really amazing to see the differences between the staff of each movie. How they approach the essence of storyboards and how direction is reflected in it, and plenty of other things. It's just so incredibly fascinating to me.

Al Jaffee : 1921-2023

Al Jaffee, the famed American creator (comics artist and writer passed away on April 10, 2023. Born March 13, 1921 , Jaffee would go on to be a cartoonist and humorist throughout his life. Jaffee’s first professional comicbook work was the story "Squat Car Squad" in Joker Comics Vol 1 5, with a cover date of December 1942, and a street date estimate of September 1942.

He was most famously recalled for his creation of the “MAD Fold-In” feature in MAD magazine, which first appeared in MAD #86 April 1964.

Jaffee’s first MAD credit was for writing the article “Baseball... Science or Skill?” in MAD issue #25, Sep 1955. It was illustrated by Jack Davis.

Al Jaffee’s first MAD magazine cover idea/cover writing credit was MAD #82 October 1963, and it was illustrated by Norman Mingo

Al Jaffee not only contributed to MAD magazine but also was a contributor to 3 issues of American humor comic-magazine CRACKED , having done several pieces for CRACKED issues 5, 6, and 7.

In 2016, Jaffee won a Guinness World Record for "the longest career as a comics artist" at "73 years, 3 months” He held the record consecutively up to the retirement date of 06 June 2020, and still holds the title in passing.

Mad #014 (cover date August 2020 ) featured Jaffee’s final original work/contributions for MAD magazine with a cover concept/writing credit for a cover piece to be illustrated by Sam Viviano, and a new Fold-In “Why is the "What, Me Worry?" kid so worried? (Al Jaffee) “

Jaffee formally retired from comics work in June of 2020 at the age of 99.

Jaffee will be remembered by his colleagues, fans and many other people for his long and illustrious body of work, his personality, and his influence on many creators.

The Supercorp Zine Digital Omnibus, to include all four second edition copies of the zines as well as the full volume 5 zine along with a few extra omnibus-exclusive illustrations from some of our artists! Well over a couple hundred pages, this full digital collection is $35 USD.

As amazing as it would be to offer these previous volumes and the omnibus as physical prints, it is just too big of an undertaking for a small volunteer team of five. We do not have the labor, time, nor space to expand that big-though it was incredibly tempting. Could you imagine the cinderblock the omnibus would be? How would we even ship it? A question for another time line...

Why is shipping higher?

We have two reasons for this.

Firstly, the book is just not going to fit into the envelopes we have used in the past. It has an estimated weight of close to two pounds per book and a spine of over 3/4 of an inch thick. It simply will not fit in the envelope with the merchandise bundles.

Secondly, we are hoping to circumvent the issue of damaged zines this year by upgrading to a box over an envelope. Many books were damaged during travel last year and we want to make sure the copy you ordered is in the condition we will receive it in. This will also allow for better padding concerning the merchandise so your book won’t get scratched or punctured. Your zine will arrive in a USPS flat rate box measuring 9 7/16″ x 6 7/16″ x 2 3/16″. It is a white box with blue and red detailing.

We have done our best to keep the prices as low as possible for the final book, as well as the previous volumes to make everything more affordable. Keep an eye on our socials for special giveaways!
