At any given time you could climb up to the roofs of Manhattan and find assorted newsies up there, I think.
Jack and Crutchie get up there and Jack rambles on about cowboys and seeing the big wide world and Crutchie smiles and listens and knows that his brother is all talk. Jack wouldn't really leave New York, not unless he got to take everyone with him. Jack's waxes poetic about this place he's never been too, and Crutchie joins in the daydreaming, knowing neither of them are taking it seriously. It's like make believe to them.
Davey and Les is always the former chasing down the latter, who is "too young to be somewhere this high up", but they end up chatting up there anyway sometimes. About Les' fears of going back to school without his new friends, about whether the newsies will still welcome them if they don't work with them, about whether they'll even remember them. Davey, of course, says that they're silly things to worry about. The Jacobs family made an impression on the newsies, and it'd be ridiculous to think they'd forget the pair of them. He doesn't say that he has the same fears.
Jack and Davey is mostly silent, with the occasional worry spoken softly between them, shot down by the other with words of kindness and the underlying tone of "you're being stupid to say that, course that's not true". Once Davey asked Jack if he really would leave to Santa Fe without them, and was content when he received the answer of: "Not without you. Not without any of you."
Race and Jack talk loudly into the night, bickering and playing cards and seeing if they can throw things at targets they set up back when they first became friends. Very few serious conversations have happened with them, but there were a couple of ones about relationships or worries they didn't think they could say to the others. The odd tear-filled conversation about sexuality is overshadowed by the constant talking over each other and teasing. But it doesn't go unappreciated.
The rare times that Spot is up there with anyone, it's normally Racer. Race who talks and talks and occasionally pauses to let the other add commentary. The pair of them make fun of Jack, and talk about issues going on within their boroughs. It's not a special place for them, but the lodging house is loud, and Spot always makes his way up to the roof of it whenever he visits for a while - just to get away from it all. Race follows him up there after a while, then keeps him company with chatter and hand-holding until Davey inevitably joins them and he can go back down to play more card games.
Davey and Spot exclusively end up there when they're both already too exhausted from socialisation to continue it. They sit in almost complete silence, drinking in the sounds and sights of NYC, until one of them eventually regains their voice and asks the other how things are going. They discuss important meeting topics and whether or not this next challenger will dethrone Spot (the younger boy is confident in his abilities, but checks with Davey's logical mind whenever he can). Davey asks him about Jack, and about the history of the bad blood between Manhattan and Brooklyn. And, now he thinks about it, Brooklyn and everyone. Spot nods along and explains in an incredibly biased way the reasons, and in turn asks Davey about his school - about his lessons, classmates, "anything interestin been said there lately?".
Jack and Spot used to go up there. Back when the latter liked the Manhattan leader. He still tries to spend time with Brooklyn's leader, but more often than not it ends in awkward silences, snide comments and the shorter boy announcing his leave about 2 minutes in. Then one day, Jack manages to catch the other boy when he's talking to Davey. He joins them, and Davey - after a few minutes - says something about needing to get Les home and leaves. It's completely silent, the wind's blowing, and goddamn it Jack's sure the other boy will just leave as well. But he doesn't. It's the only time Spot opens his mouth and says what he means to the Manhattan newsie - and he's still not sure why he did. He tells the other that him leaving the strike was a betrayal that cut him so deep he considered cutting all ties with the borough. He says that Jack hadn't left just the strikers, but friends and family, and that he'd left it all on Davey and him to sort out the mess as leaders. It's the only time he ever says to Jack that he thought they were family. And he makes it clear that he's unsure if they can ever be again. They're up on the roof for hours, long enough that the sun sets and rises. It ends with them both going off about their days, and if both leaders were seen and heard in tears that night, well. That's neither here nor there.

Writer : Amy Densham
Whether your kids live in rural Iowa or downtown NYC. If they have cosplaying parents or only they just learned about Halloween. Astrid and Leah bring that excited, welcoming, Con energy to their student’s computer screens all over the world.
The platform is Outschool. It’s been around since 2015 and started as a go-to for homeschoolers. During the  COVID-19 pandemic, Outschool grew beyond homeschooling. It became a place for learning and socializing whether you homeschool or not. Now serving over 1 million learners in 195 countries, Outschool has thousands of classes for ages 3 - 18. Learn about dinosaurs from a paleontologist. C# coding from a game developer. Or cosplay from an expert seamstress and a professional actress.
Tumblr media
Astrid Turner, bubbly and all smiles, remembers standing in line at a Con: “The cosplay community is one of the most supportive and wonderful communities out there. When I cosplay, it’s not attention on me. It’s attention for something we share. We already know we like the same things. The craftsmanship, the idea that you’re there together, dressed up, having an experience together.”
Astrid teaches Cosplay Costume Design and Creation Workshops and anything else costume-related (just send her a request). She can pleat a skirt, put a bodice in, and bring kids out of their shells with ease. Part of her class includes real-world skills like comparison shopping; if you’re asking mom to buy it, you need to have a plan.
What does Astrid hope her students walk away with from taking her class ? Ask about her experience teaching online classese.
With a classroom maximum of 5, Astrid gives personalized attention to all of her students. Some enroll with a  clear costume vision. Others just love Anime. Either way, Astrid helps them follow their own creativity and make it a reality.
Do they need a sketch? No problem. Does the fabric need to be washable? She knows just the thing. And costumes are just the beginning. Her eyes light up when she talks about intuitive, introverted students growing and connecting as the weeks go by. Someone who barely spoke in their first class is now the first one to share their progress and welcome a new student. They find their people and their voice.
Tumblr media
Leah Johnson, artful and confident, talks about her experience at Cons: “It feels like everyone is a family. They want to welcome you in. It’s an excitement of sharing. Always. Of what they’ve made, what they’ve done, other cons that they’ve gone to, and people they’ve met. Everyone there wants to inspire each other.”
Leah teaches Special FX, Halloween, and Cosplay Makeup or one-on-one classes by request. Some of her students want to become professional makeup artists. Some want to scare their grandmas with fake wounds. In both situations, Leah is raring to go! And so is her washable Mehron Practice Makeup Head - currently sporting terrifying clown makeup from her last class.
Every class is unique. Some learners pop in with full, top-of-the-line makeup kits and some join with leftovers from the makeup wearer in their house. Part of the fun for Leah and her students is figuring out how to create looks with what you’ve got. It’s a great life lesson too. Sometimes you’ll need a specific product but sometimes you just need to be resourceful. Leah playfully refers to it as preparing for the zombie apocalypse when you won’t have all the tools. Her personality beams through the screen as she uses her makeup head to show makeup techniques, up close, and with student-requested variations. For Leah, the online part wasn’t her favorite. There’s an unquantifiable distance when you’re interacting online. You aren’t in the same space. It’s not the same as in person. But she makes that work too. And it’s a small inconvenience compared to the big benefit: bringing creative, accepting spaces to students wherever they are in the world.

And it’s a small inconvenience compared to the big benefit: bringing creative, accepting spaces to students wherever they are in the world.
HOW IT STARTED
Astrid and Leah both grew up loving costumes but they didn’t find out about cosplay until much later. In each of their separate hometowns, they were that kid in full costume at the grocery store. Or decked out like crazy on Halloween. Sound familiar?
Astrid remembers her first Ren Faire: “My first costume was a disaster but I was so proud of it! Ever since then, I knew I wanted to make costumes.” Growing up in a rural area outside LA, she always wanted to go to the San Diego Comic-Con but she didn’t have anyone to go with and didn’t want to go by herself. None of her friends were cosplayers - a term she didn’t even know existed.
She taught herself to sew, learning by creating more and more complex projects. Elaborate Elizabethan gowns with striking details for the next faire.
As she grew older, Atrid took a detour, exploring other career paths but she came back to sewing when her kids were small. Making clothes and costumes for them brought back that magic. And the internet showed her there was a whole community out there. No longer the only cosplayer in town, she dove in head first.
Now Astrid and her 3 kids (ages 13, 10, and 7) attend Cons every chance they get. In full costume, of course. She enters competitions in the handmade category and, though she’s modest, has taken home more than one win. In middle school, Astrid was big into theatre, Shakespeare, and creating Renaissance costumes.
An actor, director, voiceover artist, and singer, Leah cosplays characters from Arwen to Cruella De Vil to Mary Poppins. She teaches makeup and cosplay on Outschool but does both professionally for film, theatre, and events. To name a few, she designed costumes for the TV show Kookville and a stage production of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. She even did makeup and created costumes for the movie Demon Squad, which you can find in Season 13 of Mystery Science Theatre 3000. She believes that cosplay isn’t just about expressing yourself, it’s about developing yourself and creating a full aesthetic. Beyond that, she wants her students to know, they can make a career out of their creative passions. And she’ll help them do it.
Leah talks about her first Ren Faire experience: “It felt awesome because I was trying to be intentional about creating a costume for me. Not for a play. Not for someone else based on their vision. It was my vision. It was what I wanted to do.”
You feel different in your cosplay. The persona, the confidence. It can be hard to describe but Astrid and Leah teach toward that feeling in every class.
Specializing in Elizabethan and Italian Renaissance costumes, Astrid also cosplays Collei from Gensin Impact and loves growing her skills in the anime genre. She even runs a social club on Outschool where Genshin fans can hang out virtually and game together.
Astrid beams: “A lot of kids and adults choose a character and they try to match that persona. It’s a little bit of safety. I’ve had people scream ‘OH MY GOD ITS COLLEI’ and run over to me. Under normal circumstances that wouldn’t happen. But at Cons, it’s so exciting. It’s amazing to connect with other people through that persona.”
*** Leah, with her cosplay weapon collection behind her: “You feel more confident in your character’s costume. It’s a projection of your best self. A lot of work, your imagination, and your brain is now projected on the outside. People can see that part of you that they can’t see in any other situation.”
Leading by example, Leah shows her students that they can make their creative passions into careers. She beams when she talks about a student getting confident enough to make an Actor Instagram account. Or doing professional-level wedding makeup for their entire family.
Teaching online from Arkansas since 2018, Astrid volunteered for the first-ever Outschool Cosplay Convention in 2021. Now called GameCon, the 2-day event featured presentations at different times of day for different timezones. Sessions about costume design, makeup, theatre performance, and more. And, most exciting of all, the costume showcase. Every kid got a chance in the spotlight to show off their creations. Astrid, laughs now: “I burst into tears when I logged off. It was such a rush of emotions. I found my people! I wish I had this when I was a kid.”

Cora Watches: The Way She Moves (2001)
Hello friendos! Today, in this random series no one asked for, we tackle a 2001 movie made for VH1, which I would describe as the love child of Dirty Dancing and She's All That. I've been watching X-Files season 9, spiraling in Doggett/Reyes (see here). This movie not only stars Annabeth Gish, it aired within months of X-Files season 9.
The Rookie fans: that's Kamar de los Reyes, aka Detective Caradine, as the male lead.
Let me whet your appetites. Here are the ending credits. Just drink it in:
youtube
Fun fact: this was hard to track down. It's not streaming and didn't get a US DVD release. So the copy I watched was not the best video quality, and it's a Polish overdub (I do not speak Polish). Not voice actors. It's just one (1) dude saying the lines in Polish over top of the English. ngl, it added entertainment value.
AG's early career cast her multiple times as the classic Good Girl: sweet, innocent, naive, kind of shy. This movie does the same. She plays Amie, a sweet-tempered office worker with a Wealthy Bland WASP-y Fiance and two Zany Gal Pals, as is law in a romcom. Amie likes photography, and if you don't think this movie will give her the chance to embrace life for real instead of hiding behind her camera, well, you have not been paying attention.
Tumblr media
Her girlfriends give her and Bland Fiance salsa dance lessons as a gift, hoping they'll "loosen up" before the wedding. When Amie and Bland Fiance walk into the studio, they see a Sexy Salsa Group dancing a routine, and Amie is amazed. Whoa. Who knew dancing could be sexy?
Tumblr media
Annabeth Gish does a reasonable job pretending to have two left feet; you better believe she steps on someone's feet within 60 seconds of the beginners' class starting. It's adorable.
Bland Fiance, who does Business, gets a Business Job offer to do Very Business in NYC, so he zips off and tells Amie, sorry babe, have fun in those dance classes without me. I have to go do Business.
And how convenient: Hunky Obvious Romantic Lead breaks up with the woman who was both his dance partner and girlfriend. She decides to bait him, tells him he can't train a new dance partner. He takes the bet, they see Amie awkwardly doing basic steps nearby, and Ex says Okay, train her, then. Yes, exactly like She's All That.
So now Amie is getting personal lessons? Just like that? She just goes with it, a little confused that Hunky Dancer is suddenly totally focused on her (meanwhile, her Zany Gal Pals are all eyebrows). Hunky Dancer has her meet him at a salsa club to give her a chance to learn in context. She shows up in one of the many super, super adorable dresses she'll wear in this movie. I have real wardrobe envy.
Tumblr media
Hunky Dancer was hoping she'd relax seeing everyone around her having a good time. But oh nooooooo the dancing is so SEXY and she is so SHY.
Luckily, Hunky Dancer is really nice about it. He takes her back to the studio so they can practice alone, no pressure, and she can kick off her shoes.
Tumblr media
We have the first of many montages. Amie and Hunky Dancer practice! She's getting better! This is where I realized that Annabeth Gish is actually a good dancer. She and Hunky Dancer end up leading a little studio get-together, and everyone is dancing and attractive and having a great time.
They step outside for some air, and... can you believe this... they kiss.
Tumblr media
Amie panics and walks away, leaving Hunky Dancer feeling guilty. The next day she explains to him that she's actually engaged (she had briefly lost her ring, then decided not to wear it in front of him, so he'd never seen her wearing one).
After some deep thought, Amie dumps Bland Fiance.
Tumblr media
She goes back to dance lessons, and if you don't think that means another montage, well. Try to keep up.
Tumblr media
And yes, the inevitable happens. Amie hooks up with Hunky Dance Man, in a very tasteful basic-cable-TV-movie, fade-to-black love scene.
Tumblr media
There is another montage. This time, they're going around the city, taking each other's pictures and just generally being cute. Everything seems perfect, right?
PSYCH!
At a big fun picnic, Amie again looks adorable.
Tumblr media
But at this picnic, Amie finds out that Hunky Dancer's Ex actually dared him to partner with her (as @mylittleredgirl pointed out: "am I a bet? am I a fucking bet?"), and she's very hurt, because we need some kind of conflict in our movie, because that's how movies work. Also, there is a Big Dance Event, and it is conveniently on the same day her wedding is/was scheduled. Amie very gently tells Hunky Dancer to take his old dance partner back.
Buckle up, because this is where we leave the rails.
-So I guess Amie is just... engaged again? Just like that?
-Amie's mom stops her just outside the ceremony and tells her to follow her heart and marry for love, not money
-as she walks down the aisle with her brother, Amie experiences her own mental montage, thinking about all the great times with Hunky Dancer and the many times he's been shirtless and brawny
-she bolts. just turns around, mid-aisle, and hightails it out
-oh, did I mention that her brother is a firefighter? Because he is. So Amie hops onto the fire truck in full wedding gown and veil and they drive over to Dance Event
-Amie kicks off her shoes, loses the veil, and joins the dance team onstage for the Big Final Dance, which she knows perfectly, even though she stopped going to rehearsals
And here's the final shot:
Tumblr media
Do I recommend this?: Honestly, yes. It's ridiculous but it's so fun. Of course, you might have to watch a blurry Polish overdub like I did, so keep that in mind. This is a giant ball of cheese, but I love cheese, and Annabeth Gish is so adorable, you can't help wanting to hug her.
What did we learn from this movie?
Be Yourself™
Follow Your Heart™
Feel the Music™
have an endless supply of cute halter dresses
Works for me.

I think he is insufferable to hang around sometimes, I would go crazy with the whole : I am retiring, now I am going back to work grab your bags, we are going to NYC to get work.
Now I got bored again, lets go back to boston. Omg I got bored again? Lets signed for Pottery lessons this season, got bored again lets go to pt.
Boy 🤯
That’s the life of a celebrity. He’s got a busy schedule. And this is his down time. I think people say dumb shit when they’re feeling a certain way. What’s odd to me is as much media training that he’s had to have had and that’s what he says 🤦🏻‍♀️
I don’t care what you’re feeling. When you’re voicing your opinion on a public platform it does matter. He said what he was feeling in that moment. But that doesn’t mean there was conviction in his words. But him being in LA during awards seasons says a lot. He doesn’t want to be forgotten. Someone wants a job.

Ending an awfully rough month with one of the gentlest films for this week’s Monday Philm: A Late Quartet (2012), dir. Yaron Zilberman. Hard to pick just ten shots for this post when the movie—and Phil as Robert Gelbart—are so gorgeous throughout.
In the brief making-of featurette Discord and Harmony, Phil talks about how this isn’t a film where someone is dying, no one is robbing a bank—it’s just about life and regular people going through real struggles in their relationships, reckoning with their lives up to now. That really allows the characters (and actors) to shine, making use of the smallest nuances to show how the quartet has fallen out of tune.
So many little things I love about this film, especially on this watch—Robert’s damp, messy, fresh-out-of-the-shower morning hair at the start. His impression of Daniel’s accent. The balance between the cold, undersaturated blues and greens of New York City in the winter and the rich warm tones found in the music, in bed, in the concert hall. I’m not too familiar with Christopher Walken’s career but he brings such a quiet sadness to Peter’s loneliness. Imogen Poots is overacting but it’s kind of camp? Robert’s gives a little laugh, and PSH’s voice is so deep, so bass, it rumbles the speakers on my old TV a bit. For a film about music, there’s an awful lot of silence—which serves as tension, cut softly by an up-bow or violently by Robert’s outburst.
Especially loved the scenes of Robert jogging through Central Park, because in less than a month I’m gonna be running through Central Park in this year’s NYC half marathon! It’s a funny, full-circle moment when I think about it, since Phil is one of the primary reasons I’m running it to begin with!
I started rambling a bit here so I’m just gonna throw it under a cut:
I’ve mentioned before that Phil confided in a friend that he felt this was his best performance. It’s interesting to watch A Late Quartet with that thought in mind. His friend partially agreed, later writing that this performance was the start of what should’ve been—the next, deeper, more powerful, incredible chapter of Phil’s career. He is so clear-eyed, so in control of his body, in sync with the story and his fellow actors and the music. He took violin lessons and was quite good, apparently to everyone’s surprise lmao. Robert’s pain goes so deep, uncertainty and doubts and fears of not being good enough stretching back 25 years, and PSH shows it with the tears in his eyes, a quavering voice, glares of restrained fury and deep breaths.
Anyone at all familiar with Phil Hoffman is probably aware of how hard he was on himself—almost comically, often infuriatingly humble and/or self-critical, take your pick. So I’m glad he was proud of this performance and recognized his own strengths here. He was and is so loved, outside of his work, just for who he was, for being himself, someone so many people would move heaven and earth for. I know I would love him anywhere, doing anything. I’d love him if he fulfilled that fantasy of running away to work at a gas station in the middle of nowhere, unknown and unrecognized, or his other idea of moving to France to teach English, or if he stayed at the deli forever. That’s just how the stars are crossed. But I’m also grateful for what he did do, the souls he brought forth from his own, the lives he lived onscreen and left for us. It’s acting and it’s art and it’s so much more.
Feeling especially emotional tonight because it’s the end of February, the longest shortest month, and this has been a particularly terrible one. It’s one of those illogical quirks of love and grief that he is the reason this time is unbearable and he is also the reason I am able to bear it. Gd, words fail. I just didn’t know what life meant until I met him, is all. Love you in the snow and love you in the sun, Phil.

TMNT AU Idea the Foot Clan
What if the turtle bois weren't raised by Splinter but rather raised by Shredder/Oruku Saki. I'm still thinking about how they got kidnapped and where it goes from there but to quickly say they are indoctrinated into believing the foot clan's ideals and beliefs to bring New York under their heel.
The Foot Turtles
Foot Leonardo: He's the faithful servant that doesn't know how to think for himself, like he believes fully that his master is everything there is and puts nothing else in his eyes, he is also rash even if skilled, he tries to act calm and collected but he has a really short fuse whenever someone or one of his brothers talks badly about Shredder or Karai he would have them put them in their place, he is a mix of both 03 and Rise, Leo is pretty ominous when fighting him he acts like a ghost as he turns invisible to make you question where the pitch or tone of his voice is coming from til he has you in his hands before you could beat him, Leo takes the role of an assassin religiously Leo kills his targets quick so they wouldn't suffer. he's in charge of his brothers despite being fully close to them he spends his time as a teacher in the foot ranks, he spend his time assuming the role of Shredders personal Ninja learning from both Kunoichi and Shinobi honing their skills and lessons ever since the older ones taught the blue turtle at a young age, the Blue Turtle believes he is helping the world saving the people from themselves. Leo is the Ghost of the urban jungle.
(Leo's appearence)
The eldest turtle is a red ear slider turtle adding more red patterns to connect from his face to his arms and legs almost like the phases of the moon,he has brown and green hazel eyes and his armor is a mix of both a Samurai and a Ninja, his bandana is a dark blue with ocean patterns behind it, scars are etched into his biceps and legs for the hard enduring training from the Kunoichi and Shinobi foot member's, he has a sash wrapped in his chest proudly wearing the foot colors and their symbol stamped on his armor pauldrons
Foot Raphael: He's the rash brat with a violent temper and aggressive attitude with how he was picked on or mocked at as a mutant turtle, he thinks he's the strongest one amongst the foot clan is, he is somewhat arrogant because of his harsh training with Oruku, Shredder has put the red banded turtle through hell and torture training Raph physically and mentally with a blend of manipulation. The big guy believes what Saki did to him is the right thing to him, Raph has a sense of superiority due to being chosen by Oruku with a baggage of the need of validation from his master to have the Mantle of his title was indeed an honor to Raphael, if something happens to Oruku than the red turtle would become the next Shredder, he would never let his brothers hear the end of it, if they got cocky about their abilities or how they think they'll beat him. Raph is a aggressive fighter that uses you're expectations of him and exploits that to his advantage to purposefully miss his attacks til you lose, the big red turtle is quick and finishes his target. Raph has the most compassion when giving his trust and believing that shredder is counting on him, his sense of validation is ever present to show he can be a better son and a hero of NYC he's a mix blend of 2k12 and Rise Raph
(Raphael's appearance)
Raphael is an alligator snapping turtle with ocean blue eyes, spikes on his shell, sharp nails and spikes on his skin, but most of it has to be filed down or completely removed, Raph has armor that is both armored and cloth covered giving that he is an apprentice of Oruku becoming the next Shredder, his red bandana covered half of his face while wearing a whole face mask leaving his eyes exposed that have black and red eyeshadow to blend with his mask which has kanji written behind, along with the foot clan symbol on top of his mask,
Foot Donatello: Donnie is a practical thinker, he believes fighting is useless and so he makes the best and most efficient choices to keep one from happening he's more focus on surveying his brothers and keeping them out of trouble trying not to care but still does. Donnie won't hesitate to prevent his brothers from fighting because of some occasions they would fight each other for Shredders attention, but the purple turtle at times has to commit acts of violence or assassination like his brothers when Shredder demands it and Donnie has to begrudgingly accept while being empathetic in taking out his target. Donnie has a moral compass that makes him question if what he and his brothers are doing the right thing and this dilemma is ever growing onto him, being Shredders covert spy says a lot about how the foot spies depend on Don to give and process crucial information to expose the foots enemies. He's a mix of Rise and IDW Donnie
(Donnatello's appearance)
Donnie is a spotted turtle painting his shell in purple dots shaping it into a purple dragon, his eye color is honey gold colored and he wears a long sleeve jacket with a bandana that covers his head with the dragon pattern from behind, fishnet top and leggings, both covered in leather and black wraps along with a strapped chest belt with the foot insignia. With a wrist com that acts as his mini computer and a wrist phone to call his brothers
Foot Michelangelo: out of all of the brothers Mikey is the most violent turtle trained to become Shredders personal weapon of war who is to believe he relishes in his passion for violence, he's the rebel out of the group and would sometimes talk back at Shredder or Karai, he would learn his lesson when he loses or is beaten down by Oruku, Mike has emotions but he simply cares about himself too much about himself and his own feelings than everyone else's. Katarina Wong, MTS ’99
“I think a lot about the word ‘belonging,’ because it goes hand in hand with not feeling ‘enough of’ in terms of my own culture and longing to belong. For the two years I was at HDS, genuinely engaging intellectually and spiritually with some of the deepest questions that shape our humanity became an incredible lesson in owning where I am. HDS became a community I felt I belonged in. I think that's the core of HDS for me—that belonging and exploring the expression of human experience.”
Katarina Wong is a writer, artist, and curator and is the associate director of fellowships at The OpEd Project. With a Cuban mother and Chinese father, she is the first generation of her family born in the U.S. Her writing and her artwork merge themes from these cultures as a way to understand the immigrant experience and her cultural inheritances.
HDS, NYC, and the Impact of the Pandemic
I graduated from HDS with a master of theology studies degree within the world religion track and with a focus primarily on Buddhism. After almost 20 years in New York City, I left after five months of the pandemic and moved to Santa Fe. In fall 2020, so many of us were working remotely, but I think we all thought we'd get a grip on this, and that life will go back to usual.
I was working at Columbia University as program manager of arts administration at that time, and a friend invited me to Santa Fe knowing that New York was a rough place to be. I went to Santa Fe thinking I'll get a little bit of a reprieve, but then we didn't go back. As I was in Santa Fe working remotely, another opportunity came along that led me to change jobs. I am now the associate director of fellowships at The OpEd Project, which is an organization dedicated to elevating underrepresented voices in the most urgent, important public conversations happening.
The unexpected upside of the pandemic was that it gave me time. Without access to a ceramic studio, I decided to focus on completing a memoir about renovating an apartment in Cuba and confronting my own cultural heritages, which had always been very uneasy for me. I grew up feeling I wasn't Cuban enough, not Chinese enough, not American enough, though that I've come to accept that being in this liminal space between the three cultures is a place in and of itself—one I can find respite in.
Religion, Spirituality, Art, and the Relationship with Vulnerability
Another thing that happened during this time was that my undergraduate alma mater, St. John's College, started a series called Spiritual Journeys and invited me to speak about my own spiritual journey. I centered my conversation around something I had been thinking about when I was at HDS: How, as an artist, do I talk about art as I experience it in the studio as a nonlanguage-based experience with its own kind of logic? It’s always seemed like a question of translation, which fueled my interest in the limitations of language around these kinds of experiences.
Before I went to HDS, I had been reading contemporary Buddhist writers. I realized Buddhism has a whole library around the limitations of language, not about art necessarily, but about the enlightenment process, which is a nonlanguage-based experience. There is language around it in the practices, the chanting, and the ritual, but there's a gap between how far language can take you and the experience itself. That gap became interesting to me, and how sometimes we prioritize language over experience. How much does language help one get into the experience of something beyond it? At what point do we just have to stop talking?
I grew up being curious about my parents’ respective religions. In my father’s village, the religious practices were a blend of Taoism and Buddhism influenced home altars. Certain days, mysteriously, his mom would be doing something on the home altar, but he never knew what it was. It was part of the fabric of how everyone lived, but for my dad, it felt more superstitious than religious.
My mother went to a convent school where she had very good experiences. Her beliefs are definitely influenced by her Catholicism. When she came to the United States, she continued to carry her beliefs but didn’t feel the need to be active in the church; however, my parents decided to send my sisters and me to evangelical school thinking that it would be stronger academically than public school. They probably thought a little religion can't hurt you, but I had a very negative experience there. I became very cynical about Christianity, especially as it was expressed in the fundamentalist movement. I formed a lot of very strong judgments that I still can feel occasionally rising up in me today.
Through my experience at HDS, those feelings began to soften and to shift. As I get older, I see that there is so much in religion, in spirituality, in art, in relationships that the only way to go deep is to allow yourself to be vulnerable. When I was in my 20’s my heart was more on my sleeve. Then, through lived experiences, I built defenses around that vulnerability. That's the thing that I find needs to come down first: breaking that barrier, being vulnerable to one another and to oneself by letting yourself be vulnerable by asking questions about practices and being open to experiences that are not your own. Curiosity goes hand in hand with, or maybe leads the way towards, vulnerability. If you can be deeply curious about someone else's experience and put judgment aside, that's a way of allowing yourself to be vulnerable.

Following the Unexpected Rhizome Path to a Place of Belonging
I chose HDS somewhat serendipitously because of a conversation I had with Sohyun Bae, a friend and fellow artist who had attended. I had never thought of divinity school as a place where you could ask the questions I had been grappling with, but we got into a conversation about the question of translation and nonverbal experiences, and she said I should consider Harvard Divinity School. So, in following one of those unexpected little rhizome paths, I applied and was accepted.
When I got to HDS, I really had to confront my own biases. My time at HDS gave me an opportunity to rethink Christianity. Some of the courses I loved taking were around early church history and some of the esoteric movements. I found I was able to reconnect with Christianity, not in a way that I would consider myself Christian, but I gained an appreciation for the beauty and the meaning that this religion can bring to people. On that level I began to feel, who am I to judge? I let go of some of the antipathy that I had towards Christianity that I experienced as a kid.
There's something about the HDS community that was so welcoming and so intellectually curious, pulling people in from everywhere, studying all these different things that allowed me to be open. I remember at orientation the words, “you all belong here,” which reminded me of my reaction when getting my HDS acceptance letter. I thought, oh my god, I got the other Katarina Wong's acceptance letter. I'm just going to show up and hope that she doesn't show up. I was experiencing “imposter syndrome,” but as I made friends and I talked to other people I found out that everyone felt that way.
I think a lot about the word "belonging,” because it goes hand in hand with not feeling “enough of in terms of my own culture and longing to belong. For the two years I was at HDS, genuinely engaging intellectually and spiritually with some of the deepest questions that shape our humanity became an incredible lesson in owning where I am. HDS became a community I felt I belonged in. I think that's the core of HDS for me, that belonging and exploring the expression of human experience.
For Incoming Students and the Recently Graduated
To incoming students, I would say, take advantage of everything that HDS has to offer, including the whole Harvard University system and consortium. I audited a lot of classes and attended many of the Harvard public offerings. I made it my full-time career for two years to follow my curiosity and see where it led. Use this as an opportunity to build beautiful relationships with others, especially those who you might not otherwise. My HDS experience and the people I met are what helps sustain me even today.
For those who are moving into a post-HDS career, whether to get your PhDs, or on to chaplaincy and onto a career, the opportunity is to continue those relationships. Use your experience at HDS to consider the most important and pressing problems that we're challenging today—social justice, climate change, inequity, and so much more!—and ask yourselves, How can we be in this world with integrity and with love? That is a super important question—one that HDS helped me to think about differently and to reshape those conversations with others.

@duraffinity I like your suggestion for the white bread husbands, so here’s Wesley, Chris, and the velociped.
On with the fic!
--
Chris really should have planned this better when he volunteered to allow one of his fellow instructors the use of his car when their own had gave out that morning and was at the shop.
He had errands he needed to run today, but at the moment he was without a vehicle and no one else could give him a ride. Fiona was too busy and Beverly was out of town for a family thing, and none of the other instructors were available. So, with a sigh, Chris was going to have to walk about town to finish his errands.
As he walked down the streets, canvas bag in hand with items from the store, he heard a loud car horn go off and someone using some rather colorful language at someone else.
Then he heard a familiar voice.
“It’s specifically for bicycles! I have every right to be here! God, you’re worst than the drivers in New York City!”
Chris turned, looking over to see Wesley waving his fist at a retreating car. “Wesley? Is everything alright?” He asked, walking over.
Wesley turned his attention to Chris, looking startled, before he put on that charming, little smile of his. “Ah, good afternoon, Chris! Sorry, I’m sure you heard all that. Some jerk decided to drive in the cyclist lane.”
“Which is not for cars.” Chris commented.
“Exactly! As I implied in my shouts, drivers in New York did that all the time! But then again, I don’t think anyone there could drive to begin with.”
“I’m surprised you bothered taking a bike to get about in a city like that.”
“Well, it’s cheaper than a taxi, and public transportation there isn’t exactly the most charming of places to sit. Trust me, you don’t want to know what I’ve witnessed.” Wesley replied. “Besides, a good ol’ velociped can get me from point A to point B just fine!”
Chris raised an eyebrow, mouthing the word ‘velociped’, before looking back at Wesley. “Then why are you trying to get a driver’s license?”
“Oh.” Welsey blinked. “Well, because it seems the right thing to do now that I’m back here.”
Chris shrugged, he guessed that was a good enough reason. “Well, then I shall leave you to your riding. See you at your lessons on Thursday.”
“Ah, off to do errands or something, Chris?” Wesley asked.
“Just finished, actually.” Chris replied. “Now I’ve got to make the trek home.”
“You’re not driving?”
He shook his head. “I’m letting another instructor borrow my car for today because her own was acting up this morning.”
“That’s very kind of you.” Welsey said, actually sounding impressed.
Chris felt a warmth at the back of his neck. “Oh, well, it’s nothing, just a kind gesture. One should try to do them, after all.”
Wesley nodded, smiling. “Well, how about I offer my own kind gesture by giving you a lift.”
“Ah.” Chris blinked, looking at the bike then up at Wesley. “Not that I’m trying to be rude by rejecting the offer but... how?”
“Oh, just get on behind me and hold on tight! Here.” The older man started to undo the strap of his helmet, then held it out. “You can wear this while you ride with me! And don’t worry about my safety, I’m very good at riding.” Then he winked, and Chris has to wonder if that was meant to be dirty or if he just did that as a gesture of ‘trust me’.
Either way, the warmth was felt in the taller man’s face now and he coughed. “Oh, I... well, since you’re offering.” He slipped on the helmet and moved to get on the bicycle. There were metal bars on the back tire for him to put his feet it looked like, so he did just that, then wrapped his arms around Wesley.
“Alright, hold on tight.” Wesley commented before he started to move his legs and off they went.
Wesley talked the whole time, about some silly thing that happened while he was riding his bike in NYC, but Chris was only somewhat paying attention. His mind seemed a bit distracted by the fact that he was holding his driving student like this. He tried to ignore any stares from townsfolks who watched as they zipped by.
When they got closer to his neighborhood, Chris gave his address and Wesley soon arrived, stopping outside of it. “Alright, that wasn’t so bad!” He commented as Chris got off, then was given back the helmet.
“Yes, uh, thank you for that.” Chris said, clearing his throat.
“No problem. And if you need a ride tomorrow morning, if you haven’t gotten your car back, just give me a call.” Wesley pulled a card from his pocket, holding it out.
Chris took it from him, looking it over. It was a simple business card, but there were phone numbers on it. Seemed rather odd to have your personal cell on a business card, but it also seemed very fitting of Wesley.
Also, was Wesley not aware that he had given Chris a similar card after their first lesson together? Maybe he shouldn’t bring it up...
“I’ll let you know.” Chris pocketed it. “Thank you, again.”
“You’re welcome! See you tomorrow.” Wesley replied once he got his helmet back on. “Hopefully.” Again, he winked, and then rode off, narrowly avoiding a squirrel.
Chris winced, then scratched at his neck. That was... something.
--
EDIT: I completely forgot that Wesley had given Chris a business card before, but I am now loving the idea that he gives Chris a few of them before Chris finally has to tell him that he’s done this before.

Set post-homecoming where Rose stayed in NYC. She wonders why she feels a connection to the dark haired boy and why he appears in her dreams even though she is dating someone else.
Lol, sounds a little like how they came together in the Duke Eloi universe, but, I'll make this different for you.
Warnings for this one: written mostly on my phone
At the start of the new semester, Rose had a completely different class schedule than her twin and her boyfriend. She had other friends, obviously, but there were no two people closer to her than they were and she felt a little lonely walking into biology, where the overly strict teacher and organized the seating alphabetically. Rose was seated next to "Trixie Carter" and she didn't know who that was. She was an extrovert with people she was comfortable with but an introvert in new situations.
"Trixie!"
The bellow nearly startled Rose off her bar stool. As she looked up, a slender black girl with a large afro was running backward right into her.
"Hey," Rose shouted, throwing her hands up to defend herself, but it was too late.
She had been knocked into.
Rose went flying off her lab stool, taking the time to make sure she hadn't injured herself before standing back up. She hoped she didn't bruise.
"Trix, watch it. Sorry, dude."
Rose also took offense to being called "dude" but when she whipped around, her voice died in her throat. There was a boy, offering out his hand to her. Not just any boy.
The boy.
The haunted boy in her dreams, who laughed all the time and took her on hot air balloon rides. The boy that had sent her to a psychiatrist when she was just a child because she had so believed him real that she would run away from home to find him. The boy who she daydreamed about to this day, even when her boyfriend kissed her. The boy, who she'd always wondered about but never doubted the authenticity of. The boy.
The boy.
"You didn't hit your head, did you?"
Did he sound nervous or did she just want him to? Did she want to believe that he knew her too? And, if he did, what did it all mean? Did she want to know what it meant?
Rose took his hand and let him help her up. Their hands touched and her heart jumped. The boy, real and solid.
"You be careful," he said, and he very slowly let to of her hand.
Rose lowered herself to her lab stool, watching him take a seat further back in the class to a girl she knew from her geography class.
"Sorry I bumped you," the girl beside her said but Rose barely heard her. "Jake says I'm a klutz but, in my defense, he shouldn't have been throwing crap knowing I was going to have to run to catch it."
Rose didn't care. The boy had a name. Jake. What a wonderful name, Jake.
She eventually had to turn around and face the teacher but the lesson didn't reach her. The bell rang and she barely noticed, although there was her boyfriend, waiting at the door like he always did. Rose gathered her things and walked into his arms but, over his shoulder, she watched Jake and Trixie walk away.
Jake looked back at her and she wondered what that meant.

Unveiling the Passion: A Dialogue between a Composer and Conductor on their Journey to Julliard and the World of Classical Music
by Levi Wise Kenneth Catoe Jr.
Tumblr media
May 1, 2024. (NYC) In the realm of classical music, where melodies soar and harmonies intertwine, the name Julliard evokes an unparalleled legacy of artistry and excellence. This esteemed institution has nurtured countless musical prodigies, shaping their talents and inspiring them to leave an indelible mark on the world of music. Among these luminaries is a Julliard-trained composer whose extraordinary journey is a testament to the transformative power of classical music. From humble beginnings to the grandest concert halls, this composer's story is an enchanting symphony of passion, perseverance, and unwavering dedication to the art form.
Levi Wise Kenneth Catoe Jr.: What is your background in music, Alex, and if you can explain to our audience a little bit about your classical musical training would be greatly appreciated?
Alex Marrero: I am a private teacher of classical piano lessons, and I have studied with Mary Stein, Morris Borenstein, Vladimir Feltsman, Evelyn Chen, and Jeanne Golan. LWC: That’s great Alex. How long have you been studying?
AM: I started taking piano lessons at age 5. LWC: Wow that is wonderful Alex. What would you say is a good age to begin studying classical music, and is there an ‘age’ at which people might become too stuck in their ways to adapt to the rigors of classical musical training over a course of a lifetime?
AM: I think that parents can introduce music to a child once they know they are having one (a baby); even for the 9 months before the child is born (in utero), the music that the mother may sing to the child shares the same chemistry as the future child to be born. {Note: Personally, I do believe that when we are younger, it is easier to adapt to the rigors of performing arts training, but as people grow older, our minds become less malleable regarding the arts, so accepting certain disciplines becomes tougher.}
Tumblr media
LWC: Great point and oh I do so agree. You must expose a child to classical music in utero. Can you please explain your Julliard training, simply because Julliard is regarded as the premier institution for the arts, but I have heard some say it’s out of touch as well as too demanding? What are your feelings regarding the Juilliard training? AM: When I finished my bachelor's degree in music history from SUNY-New Paltz, I wanted to "test the waters" at Juilliard, so I took a couple of "survey-style" music history courses between the autumn of 2003 and the spring of 2004. I knew for a fact that there would be sons and daughters of United Nations diplomats who could blow me away with my level of piano technique, but I continued and soon persevered. I believe that Juilliard is becoming a lot more progressive while maintaining its standards. However, since Juilliard is a school of music, dance, and drama, the institution is surely asking itself, how are we providing foundations for the performing artists of the future?
LWC: As they should be. I had private vocal classes at Juilliard for Broadway Voice lessons and I am an alumnus of AMDA (American Musical & Dramatic Academy) so there is definitely a reputation to uphold but also a changing young artist of today that now sees celebrity as an influencer of Tik-Tok or IG which may not be necessarily disciplined professionally in art (performance, vocal, acting, or dance). As a conductor of music explain to the readers what that requires and also if you can the importance of the conductor to an orchestra.
Tumblr media
AM: My opinions are certainly subjective, so I think it is very important to keep in mind that performers around the world, whether playing, singing, or doing both, perform the great majority of music without sheet music and may average 5 minutes in length. If someone decides to become the conductor of a large ensemble, such as a chorus or a band, or an orchestra, it is really important to be an all-around musician. They must know Solfege {note: Solfege, also called “solfeggio” or “solfa,” is a system where every note of a scale is given its own unique syllable, which is used to sing that note every time it appears.} Harmony, Ear training, Score Reading, and Composition; and these are some of the skills that they’ll need along with knowledge of historical performance practice, including contemporary special effects. They will need to have a great voice with great vocal skills, great keyboard skills, and a great understanding of how all instruments work with their ranges and strengths. As a conductor, you should be able to perform as a soloist with your major ensemble, your right-hand technique should be impeccable with changing meter, whether or not you use a baton and your left hand should also be excellent with entrances, releases, and dynamics. Ensembles that intentionally rehearse and perform concerts without a conductor, such as the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, may use open-ended questions when reaching collective decisions on the compositions they are working on.
LWC: Oh wow, thank you for your considerate response to the question. So for anyone of our readers who is interested, there is everything that you should be considering above. Alex, who is your favorite composer, and why is this person your favorite composer(s)?
Tumblr media
AM: While (Johann Sebastian) Bach is my favorite composer, I am being very open-minded about listening to as many different composers as possible. My Composer Advocation Project (CAP) involving the Committee on Cultural Inclusion (CCI) for the College Music Society (CMS) features contemporary works by contemporary musicians in the USA and around the world.
LWC: What composer inspired you to become a musician? Was it a classical or mainstream musician?
Tumblr media
AM: I believe that in the USA, Leonard Bernstein made a tremendous impact on the classical music world as a composer, conductor, pianist, educator, and author. I really like the fact that he knew what was happening in the worlds of ballet, drama, musical theater, and pop music of the 1950s through the 1980s. LWC: What mainstream artists do you listen to, if any?
AM: Although I do not do enough of this, I really enjoy listening to jazz, Latin, and electronic dance music. LWC: Really? You’ve just given some flashbacks with the EDM (Electronic Dance Music) association because now I’m thinking of the Lee Curreri ‘1980s character from Fame (movie and TV show) Bruno, who was classically trained but alternately inspired by the use and experimentation of synthesizers. But alas, I grew up loving theater; my favorite musical scores are Man of La Mancha and West Side Story. Do you have a favorite musical theater soundtrack?
Tumblr media
AM: Going back to Leonard Bernstein, I believe West Side Story is a great combination of the classical, jazz, and Latin styles of the 1950s.
LWC: Thank you so much. Now please promote yourself to the readers, and where can I find you for private piano instruction?
Tumblr media
AM: Although I prefer to drive to the homes of my students in Orange County, New York State to have piano lessons with them, I also offer instruction remotely online. I can be reached via LinkedIn at Alex Marrero/Private Teacher/Classical Piano Lessons I teach students music through the piano and in that order. I will close with my own quote:
"The more creative we are, the more human we will be..."
I send my best wishes to everyone. With great hope, Alex Marrero Thank you, Levi!
LWC: Bravo, my friend, bravo. Thank you very much for that and all of your shared wisdom. And there you go, all of you future musical enthusiasts. Please link up with and follow musician, Mr. Alex Marrero and tell them that BOSS (Black Owners Seeking Success) sent you. J

Augustine Holt grew up in the bustling streets of New York City, surrounded by the sounds of the city and the sights of its towering skyscrapers. From a young age, she displayed a natural talent for music, particularly the piano. Despite her modest upbringing, Augustine’s parents recognized her potential and encouraged her to pursue her passion.
After completing her education, Augustine found herself working as a piano teacher’s assistant, sharing her love for music with eager students. It was during this time that she crossed paths with John Wick, who happened to be seeking piano lessons to fill the void left by his late wife, Helen.
