However, I didn’t but either of those in the pic, but Baklavas and Halvas, which are worth trying and as a souvenir for sharing. In that market, not only fresh produce, desserts, and other foods they’re offering, but there are restaurants, some gift shops, Judaica items stores, and many more. I followed a narrow alley in the Muslim quarters of #Jerusalem, where I met this cute guy Hamza who took me to meet his other friends. We talked in broken English, but the smiles we shared were worth more than the words we could have spoken. What exactly is travelling if you haven't taken some narrow alleys, lost your way in some intricate details, not talked or cheered with a local, or tasted local cuisines. 24 Adar On this day in 1886 the first organized Arab assault on the Jewish settlement in Israel took place in Petach Tikva.  Petach Tikva, referred to as the mother of all settlements, was founded in 1878 by a group of Orthodox Jews from the Old Yishuv in Jerusalem.  It was financed by Baron Edmond de Rothschild who purchased the land legally from local Arab merchants, yet the Arabs from the local village tormented the colonists almost from the beginning.  The conflict was due to the fact that local Arabs had lost the land due to the lack of payment of taxes and debts. So, they did not recognize the purchase as legitimate. To further complicate matters, the Ottoman government did not immediately ratify the sale, and the local Arabs remained as sharecroppers.  When the Jews tried to assert their ownership, things turned for the worst. After several skirmishes had taken place back and forth, on a rainy day when most of the local men went to the close by Jaffa for the day, some 200 Arab rioters attacked the small city.  One person was killed and several were injured. The settlement suffered widespread destruction, and all of the animals were stolen. Ottoman authorities did arrest some Arabs and returned some of the animals, but they were reluctant to take strong action against their coreligionists. The settlers themselves played down the incident as they did not want to cast negative attention on the new settlement of Israel. These events happened 12 years before the first Zionist Congress, and 62 years before the state was founded.
