Simon Petrikov headcanons
Only child, had loving parents who supported him but often left him alone for long stretches of time. An eager, empathetic child, he craved relationships with others and struggled to find them. The people he cares for, he loves completely and with everything he has.
He and Betty were such an obnoxious couple. They were each other's first everythings and became attached at the hip from the moment they started dating. They did everything together, mostly because it was Betty helping Simon with all his books and expeditions and research. Dated 2 years before proposing and things fell apart not long after. Simon had his doctorate while Betty was finishing hers, they planned the wedding for after she got her degree.
Was in his mid-late 30s when he first put on the crown. He'd just gotten his PhD and proposed to Betty and was at the happiest point in his life. Secretly believed but never really acknowledged that the reason Betty disappeared is that he accidentally killed during during his first bout of crown induced madness. That lingering grief and guilt was a major driver of his later princess kidnapping mania, seeking out the princess his heart knew was gone. He calmed down again once he realized Betty was alive.
After Betty disappeared, he became a hermit to avoid hurting others and the War happened a few years later. He was affected enough by the crown's magic to not suffer from the radiation sickness. He met Marcy a few years after.
Always wanted children, even when he'd been a child. Was somewhat resigned to it never happening until he met Betty. One of their first big discussions as a couple was about their mutual desire for kids. They both wanted a big family.
Has a somewhat addictive personality which is one reason why he could never truly abandon the crown. Goes through phases with food where he'll only eat a certain thing for months on end. Smoked like crazy, he was trying to quit because it bothered Betty but never quite managed. Even a thousand years later, he still wakes up sometimes craving a cigarette.
Is actually quite different physically from modern humans. Future humans only have 4 fingers and toes, they also have a slightly different internal organ structure that evolved post-war. Simon and humans give each other slight uncanny valley vibes, facial/skeletal shape is mostly the same but a bit tweaked that they can tell something is off slightly. Oooans live longer, are more durable and have more flexible bones. Simon nearly faints when he sees Finn bend his arms in ways that's impossible for him.
Simon retains some effects of the crown. His dark brown eyes became a piercing light blue after that first time and never went back. While he loses all magical ability, he has a higher sensitivity towards it. Has a crazy high physical cold tolerance and can survive temperatures that would harm a normal person. However, his mental tolerance for cold is low. Hates being cold and bundles on layers whenever it's chilly.
He didn't keep memories well while as Ice King. When he came back to himself he found he remembered cold hard facts he learned as IK (names, events, general history of Ooo) but personal memories were only 'dreamlike impression'. People will tell him things he did and Simon will not remember, he finds it very upsetting. Every now and again, a memory will bubble up and no matter what he's doing he'll need to hide away out of embarrassment.
A musical prodigy, someone who can pick up and learn instruments quite easily. Could have done music professionally if he'd been so inclined but preferred it as a hobby. In order of proficiency it was piano -> keyboard -> harmonica -> acoustic guitar -> fiddle -> violin -> ukulele*. *Can only play his and Betty's song which he sang when he proposed.
Drums was never an instrument he learned pre-crown, it was never something he wanted. He learned as Ice King, a way to express his innate musical talent in a medium that fit the cursed king. Plays intermittently after being freed but it takes him years before he becomes comfortable with them.
Taught Marcy the basics of guitar while they traveled together. She'd already expressed an interest in music and he was happy to teach her and sing to her as a way to keep up her spirits. Often joked guitars weren't his specialty but they were easier to find/more portable in an apocalyptic world.
Every couple of months, he and Marcy will pick a venue and play together. Its never announced, they just show up someplace and start playing. The audience goes wild but they're just having having a little family jam session.
Goes grey early. He has a massive panic attack when he first noticed streaks of white in his hair. He thought he was turning back into Ice King before he realized he was just getting old. Its a concept just as foreign and frightening.
It took a long time for Simon to admit what Marcy was to him, it felt presumptuous to think of her as his own when he could barely provide for her and was slowly losing his sanity. Meanwhile Marcy saw him as a parental figure right away. They've since talked about it and acknowledge it but just call each other Marcy and Simon for simplicity's sake. Sometimes, when she's feeling fond she'll call him 'old man' and it makes him feel like a king.
Marcy has a serious fear of Hunson taking offense to Simon filling in the father role. Its one reason she doesn't call him dad even if she feels it. Hunson is cruel and apathetic and possessive. She won't risk Simon falling victim to his petty whims.
Worked hard to make up his past behavior to the people he'd hurt. Many were forgiving but some weren't and he had to learn that some people would never accept his efforts. Took a long time for he and PB to get on good terms. Bubblegum holds grudges and Simon was so ashamed over his actions he would've avoided her if not for Marcy. For her sake, the two of them painfully, awkwardly made peace with each other. They're now quite friendly and even hang out occasionally without Marcy.
Is super uncomfortable around Gunter/Ice Thing for a while. Takes him awhile to work up the nerve to go back to the Ice Kingdom. Ice Thing thinks of Simon as his father and refers to him as such which initially flusters Simon but he gets used to it. They're friendly, but not really close. Ice Thing houses the majority of Simon's book/artifact collection until he donates it to museums. Simon visits every now and again for research purposes and to see the penguins who mutually miss him. The more Simon feels separated from Ice King the easier time he has with Ice Thing.
Everyone but Finn realizes that Simon has basically adopted him. Finn continues to live with Jake until he dies then alternates between crashing at Marcy's, PB's and Simon's place and disappearing on quests for months at a time. Simon worries and dotes on the young human: making meals, keeping his place clean and generally being supportive until Finn is a bit more stable. Finn's obliviousness to Simon's paternal feelings makes him back off a bit more into friend territory but he still worries.
Simon not only moves out of his museum apartment but also out of the floating human city. It isolated him up there, being so unrelatable to the other humans. Moves back down to Ooo and Bubblegum gets him set up with a big house with plenty of extra bedrooms for his friends kids to stay in.
After the events of F&C, he throws himself into his third chance with a gusto. Still has bouts of depression and anxiety the rest of his life but its more controlled. He helps formalize education across the board and creates the first higher education institute in Ooo. Teaches not only about pre-war history but becomes the historian on the history of Ooo. Keeps records, writes books and does interviews that help capture the world which are referenced far into the future. While he will always be associated with Ice King, Simon makes a name for himself as well.

Wow, realized a thing, and am now no longer paying attention to class, here’s some stuff for HVLRAI characters cause why not. This was like... just recently thought about, so it may contradict past writings of mine, but this’ll be it going forwards if I’m writing from the perspective of my own science team.
Gordon: Trans Man, uses he/him pronouns, Pansexual. In the HEV suit, he was around 6′1″, because the boots where basically platform shoes, and he was just very large. Outside of it, he pops down to around 5′7″, and Bubby holds this over his head forever. Fat man! Large, which, while a good amount of it is muscle, because this bitch strong as hell, he’s still fat. Because that’s canon. fight me about it. Has a prosthetic that looks similar to the HEV suit, completely functional as Bubby was the one who made it, and he’s also the one to keep up with maintenance on both Gordon and Coomer’s various mechanical limbs.
Benrey: Doesn’t know what a gender is, just kinda vibes. He/They/Dae pronouns used interchangeably. Bi Ace. Height can fluctuate, but usually stays around 5′5″, just cause they like it there. Whatever body type he wants at the time, doesn’t actually care. Makes himself a bit bigger when he lays on top of Tommy, cause Tommy likes pressure stims like that, but other than that... They’re pretty nebulous, actually. He has a few random scars from various times he’s died, but they’re all pretty faint and he treats them like a story. He has the one across his middle from where he was bisected by the door, a few gunshot ones. The only ones dae doesn’t parade about like that is the ones from the final battle, because it makes the others uncomfortable.
Tommy: Non-Binary, uses he/him, also Ace, but isn’t entirely sure on the romantic side of things where he stands. 7′2″ currently, but does have the ability to change that. He can get taller, and he actually stopped somewhere around eight feet when he stopped growing naturally, but he decided to stay shrunken a bit, for comfort reasons. Not too comfortable, but Tommy doesn’t like shrinking further than that, so that’s where he stays. Tall and thin, but not weak. I think of like, thin like a swimmer’s build? I guess. So he’s strong as hell. He has a few burn scars, from way before he knew how to control the abilities of the star in him, and keeps them around as a reminder to be careful with his abilities, since he could get rid of them easily if he so desired.
Bubby: What’s a gender? He doesn’t give a shit what pronouns you use for him, so most people just default to he/him, but he did like Xe/Xem, so that does get used a lot more often.  6′ even, and was so annoyed over Gordon being one inch taller than xem, and held it over Gordon’s head when he got out of the HEV suit. Also kind of thin, but that’s more due to Black Mesa mistreatment than anything on his part. Is pretty strong as well, though does get more so once he’s actually, y’know, able to exist without worrying about Black Mesa. A lot of random scars from various experiments from Black Mesa. He’s most freaked out around the Y-cut scar on his chest, since he remembers getting that one, and it’s just not a fun time. Most xe doesn’t like. He also has a few burn scars from xyrs fire abilities before they figured out how to make him immune to them.
Coomer: Canonically Bi babey, let’s get that rep in. He/It pronouns! 5′2″, small round man. Very kind. The weight of metal limbs means that he’s pretty strong as is, but because of those metal limbs, it’s technically the strongest of the group, if you go by pure physical strength. The power legs cause him to go flying into the air as seen, but also absorbs the impact of the fall, leaving Coomer with little to no damage. The extendo arms have a full length, but what that is is actually unknown, simply because of the fact that Coomer has never found the need to go past a comfortable length, ie, across the room to grab the remote when no one wants to get up. Scarring around his legs where he got the power legs, which I believe to be just above the knee, since that was caused by an accident, but the scaring for the extendo arms were surgical and actually an experiment by Black Mesa that one of the clones volunteered for and it ended up getting instead, so there’s less scarring there simply because it wasn’t a traumatic injury. I mean, it wasn’t fun for Coomer, but it wasn’t explosion in the lab, wake up with metal legs type deal.
Darnold: Genderfluid, He/Him or She/Her depending. Usually wears a lil pin to signify which set it is that day. Bi. He’s about 6′5″, so tall, but not as tall as Tommy, as no one is as tall as Tommy on a normal day. Pretty built, though physically looks smaller than Forzen, simply because his shoulders aren’t nearly as broad. Is actually stronger than them, basing it purely on weight lifting abilities. His hands are pretty scarred and calloused, from his work, and the scars can travel up to his arms on occasion, but he is very very careful when he works, so there aren’t a lot there. Has a prosthetic leg, his left leg, from an accident when he was around seven. Doesn’t like to talk about it. Bubby offered to give him some enhancements to it, but Darnold is comfortable with just a normal prosthetic, nothing fancy like Coomer or Gordon.
Forzen: They/Them. Doesn’t know exactly what their gender is, just knows pronouns. Actually, that’s literally the only thing they’re sure about. Everything else is a nebulous concept, but they know they are not straight, that’s really it. around 6′3″.  I’d compare them more to like a body builder? Very broad shoulders to begin with anyways. Pretty scarred up, though most of them are completely not what you’d expect. They have a scar on the back of their ankle from sliding through the kitchen in socks and running into a cabinet. there’s a small burn scar on their arm from where they reached into the toaster oven wrong. They are littered with the dumbest scars imaginable, nothing from actually being in the military like one would expect. Is also only in the military because they wanted to do a college thing but couldn’t pay for it, and ended up not leaving.
G-Man: Does not use pronouns, agender, aro ace. G-Man just went ‘no’ to everything, and now vibes in the void. Is always taller than you, unless you are taller than Tommy, as G-Man will never be taller than Tommy. Often times goes for a more skeletal form, cause it scares more people that way. Tall, skeletal, sucks the light out of a room? terrifying. Doesn’t keep scars, simply because G-Man doesn’t want to have scars. No real blemishes, though has formed a large amount of freckles from exposure to Tommy, since he is a star, and has not gotten rid of those. G-Man actually finds them very sweet, and has thus refused to get rid of them on principal. Ruins the spooky vibe that G-Man’s usually got going, but, for Tommy, G-Man would do anything.

We sought shelter with Iceage and their recommended latest effort, ventured into the ruins of rising Austin alexalone and from station to station with Mega Bog throughout the week. Chelsea Wolfe unleashed a wonder of a portrait for the latest DC Comics storyline, Gulfer and Charmer were at odds with the real world around them, and Bad Bunny deflected the haters in his by throwing up his millions in their faces. Meanwhile, the latest song reviews came by way of the 606 from rising electronic production duo Gone to Color and cosmic hardcore memory makers Turnstile.
Here are the rest of the week’s song and video highlights….
AFI - “Tied To A Tree” [Rise Records]
Tumblr media
You’d think after releasing half an album’s worth of singles so far from their forthcoming 11th studio effort Bodies, AFI would be done, but ahead of the album’s June 11th release date, they’re putting one last nail in the coffin with a very good, eerily quiet, yet heavy goth ballad offering entitled “Tied To A Tree’. The listen, which maximizes blank space, subtle, cold electronic production over faint, skeletal acoustics and thunderous choral climaxes around Davey Havok’s voice, is a fitting punctuation mark of drama in the dark amid the album’s array of cyberpunk anthems, shoegazing, and post-punk atmospherics they’ve crossed with “Twisted Tongues”, “Escape from Los Angeles”, “Looking Tragic”, “Begging for Trouble”, “Dulceria” and “Far Too Near”.

Cold Cave - “Psalm 23″ [Heartworm Press]
Tumblr media
“Psalm 23″ is the third single off Cold Cave’s forthcoming EP Fate In Seven Lessons, due out on June 11th, and is perhaps the most curious-sounding previews we’ve heard from Wes Eisold’s dark pop outlet. Unlike the '80s new wave-indebted “Night Light” and the slick industrial mechanics of “Prayer to Nowhere”, “Psalm 23″ writes itself a stylistic detour from the familiar dark paths Eisold and company have taken over the years by branching synthetic lines into hallucinogenic patterns that make for Cold Cave’s most decidedly psychedelic listen yet. The band is zoned in for the listen’s accompanying video directed by Travis Shinn and Jeremy Danger, which sees its members vibing in the dark surrounded by candles which Mark Lanegan apparently gifted them.

Flash Trading - “Drifting” [House of Feelings]

“Can’t you see that I’m drifting free / I’m waiting for the stars to go?”, sings Flash Trading vocalist Dani Laundry on “Drifting”, the third single from the underground experimental pop duo’s forthcoming debut album City of Refuge, due out later this year. Since emerging with those plans in the form of caffeinated longing in its lead single “Show Cause” or the sun-dazzled observations of “Know the Answer”, the Brooklyn pair have been professing an M.O. for tying inverted feelings into motion. That’s no different here as Laundry’s waning patience falls back into a cool blur of dance synths, before asking “Do you want to trust in me?” The space around her is soon consumed by white hot light, and before you know it, she’s disappeared with it.

Foxing - “Where the Lightning Strikes Twice” [Grand Paradise / Hopeless Records]

After a lengthy, ominous build, Foxing have finally revealed the details behind their fourth studio effort Draw Down the Moon. It was produced by slick indie rock producer John Congleton, arrives August 6th on their newly launched imprint Grand Paradise in conjunction with Hopeless Records, and will include previous singles in the theatric, sci-fi synth prog exploration “Speak With the Dead” and the recent indie festival-scaled lifter “Go Down Together”. Latest preview “Where the Lightning Strikes Twice” deals with the ups and downs of success as an artist from a creative and financially existential perspective, with the latter digging further into the ground given the past year. Despite the grief, the band finds more power in embracing 2010s neon indie anthems than loud emo rock clangor these days to contend with the weather of these times.

Jim Ward - “Foreign Currency” [Dine Alone Records]
Tumblr media
One of last year’s most underrated and best heavy listens from post-hardcore lifer scene came from the return of Sparta, the post-At the Drive-In vehicle of guitarist Jim Ward, and their grounded-from-the-atmosphere comeback effort Trust the River. Ward, on his own merits, has remained prolific in Sparta’s 14-year absence through his Americana punk band Sleepercar as well as his own solo work, but early impressions from his forthcoming of the latter, Daggers, due out June 11th, touches closest to the surface of where Trust the River left us. Recorded alongside Thursday drummer Tucker Rule and Incubus bassist Ben Kenney, its latest single “Foreign Currency” projects a silvery shine of guitars into outer space from the Earth’s atmosphere, and all its cautionary warnings from life on this planet with it. Previous to this, Ward previewed the album with "Paper Fish” and “I Got A Secret”, featuring War On Women’s Shawna Potter.

Modest Mouse - “Leave A Light On” [Epic]

Between that Foxing track above and “Leave the Light On”, the latest preview off Modest Mouse’s first new album in six years, The Golden Casket -- which arrives on June 25th -- it very much sounds like we are in the midst of a revival of indie rock’s golden radio era from the first decade of the 2000s. Modest Mouse are no strangers to themselves in that regard, though hearing them embrace bright, churning digital keys and effervescent effects wasn’t really their style back then. On the heels of recent single “We Are Between”, the album’s second advance preview “Leave A Light On” is a mutating arena-sized indie space odyssey painted in with portraits of equally eccentric characters from the Isaac Brock universe.

Sleater-Kinney - “High In the Grass” [Mom + Pop]
Tumblr media
Honestly, I don’t think it’s merely for the sake of a solid tour packaging that Wilco and Sleater-Kinney are teaming up this summer. As we get closer to the latter’s 10th studio effort Path to Wellness, set for release on June 11th, Carrie Brownstein and Corinne Tucker are sounding looser and shaggier with their hot rock licks than they did on 2019′s polarizing pop swerve The Center Won’t Hold . Following the album’s lead single “Worry With You”, “High In the Grass” is the latest example of their style mirroring who they’ll be surrounding themselves with a lot more of in the coming months through a jTucker-led jam about spring and summertime while being caught up in youth’s bliss. “We lock up when the pollen’s up / We love when the party’s on / There is only this day for us to move / We live just a moment long,” she proclaims. Kelly Sears directed its hippie-hued animated visuals.
