i am once again getting confused by the various titles/romanizations for [ mochijun’s second main series w/ the vampires & vanitas ]. with the help of this thread & my own minimal knowledge of japanese + some googling, here’s what i’ve come up with:
ヴァニタスの手記 (カルテ) : original japanese title. directly, this would be “vanitasu no karute,” though the kanji for karute (meaning patient’s chart/clinical records/or here maybe doctor’s notes, in japanese) can also be read as shuki (meaning memo).
the case study of vanitas: from what i can tell, the main english translation title, used on the covers of the english manga + anime. plays into the doctor side of things with the “case study” bit.
les mémoires de vanitas: main french translation title. pretty straightforward, “the memoirs of vanitas”.
all good so far, but then here’s the bit that’s weird to me:
vanitas no carte: from what i can tell, an attempt at romanizing the original japanese title? bit weird to me since while “carte” *is* a french word (meaning map/card/menu?? do correct me if you know more french here) it’s not quite the same as karute (or shuki) in terms of meaning, even if the pronunciation is similar enough if you squint (and ignore the silent “e” in the original french).
vanitas no karte: even weirder as a romanization option. “karte” is a german word that from what i can tell means card/postcard, seemingly closer to the french “carte” than the japanese “karute,” even though i did see a claim in that thread that karute might’ve been taken from the german originally?? (and it is spelled with katakana in the original, typical for when japanese takes foreign words.)
in both vanitas no carte / karte japanese grammar is still clearly being used though, with the “の/no” possessive particle. it’s also used that way in this next one:
vanitas no shuki: clearly just a romanization of the original japanese, but using the kanji reading of “手記” > the listed “カルテ” reading.
—so i assume most english readers around here have been treating the carte/karte/shuki titles as romanized titles.
to be clear, this is not to say that any of these titles are wrong or that people are wrong for using any of these, i just find this to be a particularly interesting case for how words translate across multiple languages. the one question i still have (for any native/fluent japanese speakers out there, maybe?) is if there’s any more context for カルテ as a word. is it actually seen as a loan word, from the french/german? was it originally a loan word that’s so imbued in the language by now that some people don’t recognize it as a loan (e.g. cafe or kindergarten in english)? something else?

Random theory with barely any substance but what if the person who was suppose to use the book of Vanitas was not Vanitas but Noe?
Warning Manga spoilers ahead!
Now hear me out I know this is going to be a doozey of a theory and mostly runs off what if's but I've had the feeling for the past while that Noe is at least somewhat connected or related to the blue moon vampire. If not the blue moon vampire then perhaps one of the first red moon vampires.
We already know who the blue moon vampire is, this lovely lady right here
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But I always found it odd that the only characters we have met with white hair so far in this Manga are Noe, Chloe and this lady.
Who all reside in the forest.
I found it esspeically coincidental that the blue moon vampire covers her right eye with hair and when we are first introduced to a young Noe his right eye is covered with bandages.
Chapter 49s cover is in a royal purple shade and though that could be just because it looks nice it is strange that such an important character is now accociated with purple.
As we know in the human realm Noes eyes are purple, he also wears alott of the color, it could just be because its a regal color, or just the color accociatwd with the shapeless one since Domi also wears it.
But we also have to take into consideration that when red and blue mix we get a purple.
Now I know this might be me looking to much into small unimportant details but I couldn't help but find it strange how Noe as far as we know is the very last Archviste. Yet he admitted that he doesn't know who his parents are that all he knows is that he was found him the snow.
Who else wandered in the snow?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It says it was frightend of the darkness and the cold, and that it was cast out by the other vampires, is it possiable at all that maybe Noe was wandering in the cold for the same reason? And even tho we only get a small look at baby noe in the snow, doesn't he seem to be wearing a similar cape thing?
Is it possiable That there is more than one blue moon Vampire and all the tales got jumbled over time into one ?
As we know something terrible happend to the archvisties seeing as Noe was sold as a surviving one
Tumblr media
The shapeless one is also known to be feared by the vampires, so why would such a person take an interest in a child sold on the blackmarket? Unless that child sold a very important purpose, as Louis said,
Tumblr media
Another thing I couldn't help but notice is how Noe is tied to murr, its only some strange detail that I noticed but we never were told when Noe got murr or how, I always found it strange how murrs color pallette is rather similar to noes
With white fur and a red left eye, the only thing differant is the blue right eye, but is it differant ?
Tumblr media
When Noe was sold we see him sporting bandages that cover his right eye, we are never told why he wears them, there's no scar to show that he was injured, so why does he wear it? Is it possiable that maybe he was born under neither a blue or red moon?
It is also quite the coincidence that the shapeless ones pet name for Noe is "mon chaton" meaning "my kitten"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also how the shapeless one said that he was having fun because Noe came with him was certiantly odd. Almost as if he expected Noe not to. That things would be much more fun with Noe around and as we can probualy guess the shapeless ones idea of fun is not fun at all.
Does the shapeless one know more then he is letting on? And is there more to Noe than even he knows about ?
The final thing I want to say on this, is that it certiantly is odd that Noe was kept sheltered and away from everyone bar the other children growing up, that as Domi said he was kept deep deep in the woods
Tumblr media
Do you know who else found themselfs deep in the forest? The blue moon Vampire.
Also very strange is how the shapeless one sent Noe to Paris to find the book of Vanitas, how did he know it was there? And how did he know someone already had it ?
Of course this is just me over analyzing a bunch of things but it was fun to think about, feel free to share your thoughts on this theory! I have a few more but I don't want to take up too much time

The Case Study for Having the Hottest Character in a Vampire Story be a Self-Proclaimed Average Human.
You ever tell yourself you ought to marry a nice doctor?
Did you spend your tween-aged years day dreaming about some hot goth vampire boy?
Do you like your characters with manic smiles and unhinged personalities?
If you answered NO to any or all three of these points you should STILL read The Case Study of Vanitas by Jun Mochizuki. It's really quite Good.
If you answered YES to any of these, you then you probably saw the hot unhinged vampire doctor and aren’t even reading this anymore. For you that’s enough information to dive head first into this Kool-Aid. I'm not judging. But I see you there.
Tumblr media
Okay, okay so backing up a bit, it was recently my birthday so I decided to Treat Myself. I picked up a manga that I had never heard of, though I liked the cover. When I flipped through the pages I caught sight of this panel:
Tumblr media
AND YOU KNOW I CAN STAN A BASIC BINCH. NO POWERS ONLY SASS. And then I flipped a bit more and I saw this gem:
Tumblr media
DAMMMMMMMN SON YOUR WORDS SAY YOU’RE GOING TO SAVE LIVES BUT YOUR EYES AND THESE BLOOD SPLATTERS SAY YOU’RE GOING TO MURDER SOMEONE. It’s the Gap Moe I never knew I wanted.
And then I saw this face:
Tumblr media
And that’s when the money left my wallet.
SO, what on earth did I buy? Wat is this story even? Well we’re about to get into my plot overview and review! Spoilers ahead! ALTHOUGH it’s worth noting that I'm only reviewing volume one AND only summarizing chapter one so you’re probably fine.
Our story begins with a vampire called Noe. Noe lives in a world where vampires and humans coexist, so him being a vampire is Not a Big Deal. More important to his character is that he's looking for this book called the Book of Vanitas.
A side note about Noe—
I bought this story for Vanitas but Noe is Best Boi.
Tumblr media
HE IS A PURE CINNAMON ROLL. Noe is at heart a country bumpkin who can see beauty and wonder in everything. He’s polite, a tad blunt, and he loves his cat Murr.  He also has a backbone and a strong sense of justice. Bless him.
Anyways Noe goes with his cat to look for this book. He’s having a good time too; he has never been on an airship before so he’s super excited. He also has never been to Paris so he’s thrilled at the thought of traveling. He’s just very wide eyed and ready for adventure to happen to him and it’s incredibly endearing.
And lo! Adventure happens!
He meets a young woman named Amelia who turns out to be a Sick Vampire, and then she has a bit of a psychotic breakdown because it turns out there's some evil force infecting vampires that makes them go feral and corrupt their True Names (which seems to work via fae logic in this universe—so think of a vampire’s name as their soul?)
Anyways, sick vampire! What do you do if there's a sick vampire? Do you need a vampire doctor?
Yes! Yes, you do! That’s where Vanitas comes in. He crashes through the ceiling because why the fuck not
Tumblr media
--and because he looks like such a ruffian that we pretty much assume he is here to kill Amelia. But nope.
Tumblr media
He’s a vampire doctor and wants to save all the vampires even though he himself is a human. So, he rescues Amelia and turns her back from a raging demon to just regular undead citizen and all’s well that ends well.
And then Vanitas is like, “OH HEY Noe! You're our protagonist and audience viewpoint! Why don’t you join me in saving the vampires! AND guess what! I also own this book you were looking for! It’s the source of all my power!”
Tumblr media
And Noe tells him “NO. I DON’T LIKE YOU.”
And so, the series ends and they go their separate ways.
Lol. As if.  Poor Noe, he’s got a case of unwilling protagonist syndrome. But Joseph Campbell and the rest of us know that the heroic quest cycle will soon dictate his call to action!
Like it or not, Noe and Vanitas are going to be glued together from now on. Let the vampire adventure hijinks ensue!
Anyways, now for the review portion of our post.
Obviously, the immediate appeal for this manga is the art. Jun Mochizuki is a veteran of the industry and it really shows. Each panel is beautifully laid out; the art and expressions are detailed and clear. Even small throw-away panels are given their due, and they even went so far as to hire some designers to draw some of the more complicated stuff, like the airship. They did not cheap out on the background details AT ALL.
The other big draw for this manga is the banter. Noe and Vanitas are so incredibly likable yet distinct in their personalities—Noe being the naïve but earnest straight man and Vanitas being the hyper yet cynical jokester. They really complement each other and any scenes they have together are a treat.
The only thing I’m not sure of is the plot. I’ve only read volume one but so far it’s already foreshadowing a ton of mysteries so I really hope the author knows where they are going. Nothing’s worse than a story that hints at a lot but doesn't pay off (COUGH COUGH GAME OF THRONES COUGH GOUGH)
What I can attest to is that the action sequences are excellent. They are clear, well-staged and engaging. Manga has so much trouble staging action sometimes but it’s done well here, which is good because this manga looks like there will be a ton of fights with vamps gone wild.
Anyways, if any of this at all piques your interest, give it a read! Heck, it even has an endorsement from Hiromu Arakawa (the mangaka of Full Metal Alchemist fame) so if you don’t believe me, believe one of the gods of the industry!
Anyways, let me know if you have read this and what you think, or if you have any series you want me to look at next!
Ciao!

Something I started to feel curious about is the fact that Noe says he doesn't know what happend to his parents, tied with fact he was found alone in the woods crying.
Not just that. he was found in the human world, how the hell did a lil baby vampire get there alone.
I know that this could be just a quick way to avoid talking about Noes backstory but it opens up alott of possiable theorys.
A part of me wonders if Noe had his memories altered by someone or something. Hoping to maybe protect him in some way, Or if he had been perhaps an experiment of some sort.
We so far know that something bad happend to the archviste 's seeing as Noe was sold as a survivor and we have yet to meet another vampire with the same abilities as him.
So the fact that Noe never brings up what happend to them and insted says he doesnt know is quite odd and the fact that we can assume that he doesn't know how he got into the woods.
And also the fact that when we first meet baby Noe he is covered in bandages makes it seem like something bad happend to him, at first I assumed he got beat up on the black market or something but then he started saying how he actually kind of enjoyed the black market that it was like traveling and seeing the world makes me think other wise.
A theory of mine is that since we know the Archvisties are able to see someone's memories by drinking their blood, i wonder if that isn't where their abilities end. If perhaps a more powerful archvistie with more control is perhaps able to alter someone's memories, and if that was the case was Noe sent away on purpose not knowing anything ?
That whatever wiped out the Archvisties missed one on accident, due to maybe his parents sending him to the human world on purpose ?
I know we probualy won't get an answer any time soon since the manga seems to be on the route to a quick end, but I very much would like to get more lore on the archvisties since I do belive it would be a very interesting arc . To learn more about a past that noe brushed under the rug。
It may also explain why the shapeless one is so taken with Noe, because making a vampire that has control over someone's memories loyal to you would be a very good thing to have.
If im completely honest i wouldn't be supprised if the shapeless one was the cause of whatever massacre fell upon the archvisties but I dont have any proof on that yet so we may never know .
