Blood and Honey WIP CH Eleventy Seven
Pairings: Tav x Halsin x Astarion
Warnings: just a bit of blood and a metric fuckton of angst
Words: 1316
Summary: Though they're close to curing the Shadow Curse, their greatest challenge yet awaits. This snippet immediately follows chapter Eleventy Six
The center could no longer hold and Tav had a decision to make.
The shadows grew thicker, darker, they swirled around the four of them with gnashing teeth and brandished claws. The portal behind them shimmered, its border wobbling with every spell or arrow that struck it. Anymore of the onslaught and it would collapse.
Halsin stood stone faced before her, explaining that opening a portal to the Shadowfell would essentially ring the dinner bell for every Absolute-addled cultist still breathing in the inky, perpetual blackness of the shadow cursed lands. Wearing his serious expression he was still ruggedly handsome but she preferred his softer looks, like the one he gave her when she presented Art Cullugh’s repaired lute.
“It’ll never play Balduran Hall,” she said, shaking her head at all the flaws she still saw in the instrument. “But for our purposes, it will do.”
She held onto the smile he gave her. The curtain he kept between them, the one that kept him from getting too close, too comfortable in her presence, came down with his shuddering exhale and he looked at her with such an expression. Three parts awe to two parts admiration to make a whole of something she was quite sure he’d never show her again.
“Tav…”
Before he could say anything more she was seated, strumming the lute. She didn’t sing of course, recalling her disastrous performance at the tiefling party, so she called up one of her instrumentals. This was a rousing tune, one that evoked flashy displays of gallantry from men clad outfits embroidered with golden thread and jewels that flashed like flickering lights.
She used to play this when she performed with her sister, who wore her best flowing red dress clicking dried out clamshells together as she danced about the stage. Tav did her best to play her sister’s part, clicking her heels into the wooden floor, but there was a reason this was her sister’s specialty and not hers.
At the end of the tune, Cullugh’s brow furrowed, his groans quieted, and his eyes opened. He said only one word that came out crackly and dry from his disused throat, “Lavender.”
Halsin, after speaking at length with the man, had gleaned enough information to locate Thaniel and bring him home. But there was one more challenge that blocked their path.
“You must guard this portal. If it fails, we will be cut adrift in the shadowfell for all time,” he said.
Tav nodded and started issuing commands. “Karlach, Astarion, and Gale will hold the portal and I’ll escort you through shadowfell.”
“No. I go alone.”
“What?”
“I must do this alone.” Halsin repeated.
She inhaled, ready to protest before she stopped herself. “If this is about…” she paused, unwilling to voice exactly what she meant but he picked up on it anyway. “Fine, I don’t care. Just let me send Karlach or someone in there with you. If it’s as dangerous as you say…”
That danger was exactly why he couldn’t let anyone, least of all her, go in there with him. He knew the risks. To an adherent of Silvanus, the Shadowfell was nearer to hell than any devil’s domain. Creatures made of living shadow stalked a land devoid of light, warmth, or growing things. Though he was as close to his journey’s end as he had ever been in 100 years, it was also the most dangerous leg. Having her near would all but ensure his success. But having her near would also ensure that he would turn with her and flee the moment she was in danger.
“There is no time to argue,” he said, words heavy laden with emotions unsaid. “I’m going now.”
“Halsin, please…” She reached for him, intending to grab his wrist but her trajectory was off and she grabbed his fingers instead, her hand all but swallowed by his own. He could see the love written all over her face, it was always there he realized, always present in every look she gave him. And he was a fool for ignoring it, ignoring her, for so long.
“I…”
“No,” he said softly, pulling away. This was not the place for such words and he would not let her waste them here. “Whatever you mean to say, it can wait until my return.”
“And you will?”
“Yes.”
But he hadn’t. The portal was a hair’s breadth from collapsing and he hadn’t returned.
Karlach took a knee in the mud her arms limp around her battleaxe. Astarion was no better but at least he was still standing. Shadowheart fared worse, leaning at a precarious angle, clutching an arrow wound to the side.
The center can no longer hold.
Tav refused to abandon Halsin. She was sick to death of these Shadowlands, heartsick at the lives it claimed. If Halsin and his Thaniel could cure the disease that festered here, she would see it done. But not at the expense of her comrades.
“Karlach, get ready to run,” she yelled. “Astarion grab Shadowheart. I’ll bring up the rear.”
Astarion smelled the lie before it was halfway out of her mouth. He was more than ready to cut and run, he welcomed it as protecting the portal was already proving too much fucking trouble with a possibly broken rib and an exhausted sword arm. If running meant Halsin was lost, well…that’s just a nice bonus. After their fight, after he put words to the damnable feelings Astarion had been fighting down ever since laying eyes on her, he hoped the bastard never came back through that portal.
Tav made him confront truths he wasn’t ready to. But Halsin made him confront a deadlier truth he didn’t even realize was there.
“Oh no, don’t you fucking dare Tav,” he yelled.
The rage boiled in his chest and his heart filled with a righteous fury matched only by one other iniquity in his long undead life. He knew her deception was born purely and sinlessly of love, but such a gift was wasted on Halsin. All her gifts were wasted on him and he refused to let her cast her pearls before bear-shaped swine.
“You mean to stay behind to either ensure Halsin comes marching out of that portal or die trying and it’s increasingly looking like it’s going to be door number two!” He spat.
Shadowheart wheeled on her. “Tav! You can't!”
She suffered under three pairs of staring eyes, each reflecting a melange of rage, fear, and pain. Tav clenched her fists and turned to Shadowheart appealing to her friend. “Heart” she said, hoping the invocation of her nickname would make her hear the reason in her voice. “We’re out of time. Karlach’s not gonna last too much longer. There’s too many of them and we both know there’s not much magic left either of us.”
A carrion bird dove from the inky black sky, talons stretching for the nearest eye – Shadowheart’s by the look. Tav reacted, quick as hellfire igniting, batting the bird out of the sky with a flick of her staff. It fell into the nearby lake, squawking and flailing until the cold, brackish water claimed it whole.
“It’s either one of us or all of us. Let it be just the one,” Tav said deep and slow.
Shadowheart shook her head. “Then I choose all.”
“Well I don’t!” Astarion called, pulling a dagger out of another shadow. More crested on the distant hilltop. They’d be on top of them in moments, dead barely moments after that. “I’m not dying for that bastard.”
“I’m not asking you to.”
“You’re not dying for him either!”
“I don’t intend to.”
“Then what…?”
Karlach screamed, using what had to be the last of her energy to bring her axe down on a half-dead shadow. Two more took its place.
Tav did not answer him.
Instead she turned, and entered the portal.
The center fell apart.

Okay, FF9, I'm sure we all agree which OST is the best in that game (Roses of May/Something to Protect/You're not Alone :D), but
Please share your experiences with Ozma 8D
Yes!! Those are easily the best OST in the game! I also love The Place I'll Return to Someday and Vamo alla Flamenco! I love every song in the game, it has the best OST of any FF game in my opinion(but 8 is a VERY close second).
Ozma huh? It took me a while to beat it when I was young because I didn't quite understand the strategy, but every playthrough after my first, I was able to beat it first try. Though that thing can be incredibly scary especially if you don't know what you're doing. The last time I played which was a few years ago, I got real excited for the fight only to... beat it in like 2 minutes. I personally found Ozma to be one of the easier super bosses in the FF games, but definitely not a cakewalk.
Now I wanna replay Final Fantasy IX.

The Adventurer & Scholar: Khaida is, first and foremost, a scholar of magic and an adventurer at heart. Former Crystal Brave, Current Scion of the Seventh Dawn: Khaida joined the Braves, wanting to make a difference and live up to the inspiring example of the Warriors of Light. She was heartbroken when the organization turned corrupt. She was one of those who defected early on after the fateful Banquet, and when Alphinaud returned to the Stones to disband the group officially, Khaida was one of those who volunteered to help rebuild the Scions. Since then, she’s been as much a Scion as an adventurer, and always happy to help when called upon.
Aetheric Oddities: Khaida’s aether is...a little odd. There’s always going to be the tang of the void lurking beneath the rest of her saturated aether, voidtaint from a Mhachi ancestress who dove too far into the void. Not that she knows this. Yet. She’s also more sensitive to aether than your average Spoken, and uses it as another sense, along with the others. Please note that it’s not a perfect sense, and she can miss things; so if you don’t want some aetheric oddity of your own character being sensed, that’s perfectly fine!

Shipping: I love ships. I will not lie about that fact. Just be aware that Telemakhos is always going to be a part of her life. I love romance, trysts, one-sided crushes; I love it all. Give me that sweet shippy goodness.
Friendships: Khaida needs more friends, please! I want her to develop more bonds, meet more people.
Adventuring Shenanigans: Khaida is an adventurer and scholar, and she certainly would love other adventurers to join her in her shenanigans!

Final Fantasy IX Vinyl Album Will Feature 25 Tracks
Square Enix announced a Final Fantasy IX vinyl album will release on July 7, 2022. Pre-orders for the Final Fantasy IX vinyl album are available through the Japanese Square Enix online storefront. It will feature a total of 25 tracks spanning two discs. The album will cost 5,500 yen ($44 USD) and is a limited product.
The first disc will contain 16 songs, with eight songs featured on each side. The second disc will have a total of nine songs, with Side A featuring six songs and Side B featuring three songs. You can take a look at the full track list for both discs in the Final Fantasy IX vinyl album below.
