RENO, Nev. —  U.S. District Judge Larry Hicks, who was appointed by former President George W. Bush in 2001, died Wednesday after being struck by a vehicle in Nevada. He was 80.
The Reno Police Department was called to a vehicle-pedestrian crash near the federal courthouse in downtown Reno at about 2:15 p.m. Hicks was transported to the hospital but died just after, authorities said.
The driver involved in the crash remained on the scene and is cooperating with the investigation, authorities added. Impairment does not appear to be a factor in the crash.
Officials paid tribute to Hick, who was remembered for his love of his family and Reno community.
"Today’s news regarding the Honorable Judge Larry R. Hicks who served Nevada for over 53 years is tragic," Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam said on X. "Despite his notable accomplishments, Judge Hicks once stated, 'My greatest thrill in life is my family.' His life philosophy was based on a balance of family, work, and self."
“Larry Hicks was a one-of-a-kind man, revered in our community and, most importantly, beloved by his family. On behalf of my family and the men and women of the Sheriff’s Office, we extend our deepest condolences to Larry’s son Chris, the current District Attorney, and all of Larry’s family. Judge Hicks’ legacy will forever be noted in Washoe County.”
On Wednesday night, the District Attorney's Office released a statement on behalf of the Hicks family:
"Today, our community lost an extraordinary man. Judge Larry Hicks was a deeply admired lawyer and judge, a devoted friend, mentor, and a committed servant to the administration of justice. To us, he was first and foremost a man who put nothing before family. He was a hero in all manners, a loving husband of nearly 59 years, a doting dad, an adoring Papa, and brother. His loss is beyond comprehension."
District attorney, judge, family man
Hicks was a former Washoe County district attorney and the father of Washoe County District Attorney Chris Hicks.
In a video interview with his son in 2022, the judge talked about the quality he was most proud of that he got from his parents: "Devotion to family above and beyond all other qualities. My mother and father were totally dedicated to their children."
In the interview, Hicks said he and his wife, with whom he also had two daughters, would be celebrating their 57th anniversary.
Hicks was born in Evanston, Ohio, and his family moved to Reno from Los Angeles when he was 13. He graduated from Reno High School and became the first person in his family to attend college when he entered the University of Nevada, where he joined Sigma Nu fraternity, according to the interview.
In 2020, Chris Hicks posted a tribute to his father after he won an award.
"Recently, the State Bar of Nevada honored my dad, Judge Larry Hicks, with the Presidential Award recognizing his illustrious career," Chris Hicks wrote. "The prestigious award is presented to those whose conduct, honesty, and integrity represent the highest standards of the legal profession.
"Congratulations Dad. There is no one more deserving! Thank you for being the father, mentor, and lawyer you are."
Earlier this month, Hicks presided over a private investigator's lawsuit that claimed Sparks police detectives violated his rights by naming him as the person who put a tracking device on Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve's vehicle.
Hicks called David McNeely's argument "unpersuasive and unsupported" and dismissed the case with prejudice, meaning a similar lawsuit cannot be refiled.
The U.S. District Court said flags over the federal courthouses in Nevada will be flown at half-staff in honor of Hicks.

Sherry Tenney's next court date is February 1st, 2024. So she could be trying to get ahead of a verdict. I have a feeling, given everything that's come out in discovery, that the judge is going to throw the book at her. She also owes nearly $80k in legal fees at this point, and with no income and no job, she's probably stiffing her lawyer too.
And, as always, a trapped wolf can still bite, so please avoid her at all costs. She is still bragging about being armed and dangerous.

For the first time in United States history, a former president became a convicted felon and is also the presumptive nominee for one of the major political parties in the upcoming presidential election five months from now.
Donald Trump was found guilty by a New York City jury on all 34 counts of falsifying business records in a scheme to illegally influence the 2016 election through hush money payments to a porn actor who said the two had sex.
Jurors deliberated for 9.5 hours over two days before convicting Trump. The former president sat stone-faced while the verdict was read as cheering from the street below — where supporters and detractors of the former president were gathered — could be heard in the hallway on the 15th floor of the courthouse where the trial was held.
“This was a rigged, disgraceful trial,” Trump told reporters after leaving the courtroom. “The real verdict is going to be Nov. 5 by the people. They know what happened, and everyone knows what happened here.”
The verdict comes as the former president has been embroiled in several legal battles, from a now-resolved defamation case to being accused by the Department of Justice of sharing national secrets. Most of his remaining cases have been postponed indefinitely.
Trump is scheduled to be sentenced on July 11. Never before has this happened in American history, though Trump was the second president to be arrested. Then in office, Ulysses Grant was the first president to be arrested following back-to-back speeding incidents driving a carriage in 1872, according to NPR.
While he has no criminal record, there remains the possibility Trump will go to prison after his sentencing. But as a presidential candidate, what does this mean about his 2024 campaign chances?
The United States Constitution’s only requirements for running for president comprise being 35 years old, a natural-born citizen of the U.S. and a resident of the U.S. for at least 14 years. The only other limitation Trump faces running for president is Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, which says no one can run for office if they “engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.”
While Trump has been formally accused of assisting an insurrection by a House committee that investigated the deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, the Department of Justice has not prosecuted the former president over the attack.
Historically, imprisoned presidential candidates have run third-party campaigns. Indigenous activist Leonard Peltier ran in 2004 as the Peace and Freedom Party candidate while in prison for two consecutive life terms, according to Indianz.com.
Joe Exotic, of “Tiger King” fame and serving 21 years for his role in a murder-for-hire scheme, announced on March 15 he will run as a libertarian, Business Insider reported.
“Now that you have a taste of what us normal people go through. And we are now both convicted felons running for office,” read a post from Exotic’s X, formerly known as Twitter, account after Trump was found guilty on Thursday. “Will you now talk to me so we can fix this s**t?”
The best-known example of a prisoner running for president was in 1920. Socialist Party of America candidate Eugene V. Debs ran from the Atlanta Federal Penitentiary after he was convicted of violating the Espionage Act of 1917 for speaking out against World War I, according to Smithsonian Magazine.
Running for president for a fifth time, Debs’ campaign gave out campaign buttons that said, “For President Convict No. 9653,” Smithsonian reported. He received almost 1 million votes, but Republican Warren Gamaliel Harding won the presidency. During his short tenure as president, Harding commuted Debs’ sentence in 1921. Debs died a free man four years later.
With no other legislation or limitations preventing anyone in prison from running for the highest office in the land, the short answer is yes, Trump can run for president from prison.

LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
More good news today for Bidenomics, as the gross domestic product report for the second quarter showed annualized growth of 2.4%, higher than projected, and inflation rose at a slower pace of 2.6%, down from last quarter and well below projections. Economic analyst Steven Rattner noted that as of the second quarter, “the US economy is over 6% larger than it was before COVID (after adjusting for inflation). At this point in the recovery from the Great Recession, 2011, the economy was just 0.7% larger than it had been in 2007.”
Both consumer spending and business investment, which is up 7.7% in real annualized terms, drove this growth. Business spending makes up a much smaller share of gross domestic product, but it drives future jobs and growth, and much of this growth is in manufacturing facilities. In keeping with that trend, the nation’s largest solar panel manufacturer, First Solar, announced today that it will build a fifth factory in the U.S. as alternative energy technology takes off. This commitment brings to more than $2.8 billion the amount First Solar has invested in the U.S. to ramp up production.
While so-called Bidenomics is designed to rebuild the middle class, the administration is also trying to reestablish fair ground rules for corporate behavior. Yesterday, the Departments of Justice, Commerce, and Treasury invited American businesses to come forward voluntarily if they think they might have violated U.S. sanctions, export controls, or other national security laws by sharing sensitive technology or helping sanctioned individuals launder money. Coming forward “can provide significant mitigation of civil or criminal liability,” the note says.
It highlighted the anti–money laundering and sanctions whistleblower program in the Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, or FinCEN.
While many of us were watching the federal courthouse in Washington, D.C., to see if an indictment was forthcoming against former president Trump for his attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 election, a different set of charges appeared tonight. Special counsel Jack Smith brought additional charges against Trump in connection with his retention of classified documents.
The new indictment alleges that Trump plotted to delete video from security cameras near the storage room where he had stored boxes containing classified documents, and did so after the Department of Justice subpoenaed that footage. That effort to delete the video involved a third co-conspirator, Carlos De Oliveira, who has been added to the case.
De Oliveira is a former valet at the Trump Organization’s Mar-a-Lago property who became property manager there in January 2022. Allegedly, he told another Trump employee that “the boss” wanted the server deleted and that the conversation should stay between the two of them.
In the Washington Post, legal columnist Ruth Marcus wrote, “The alleged conduct—yes, even after all these years of watching Trump flagrantly flout norms—is nothing short of jaw-dropping: Trump allegedly conspired with others to destroy evidence.” If the allegations hold up, “the former president is a common criminal—and an uncommonly stupid one.”
This superseding indictment reiterates the material from the original indictment, and as I reread it, it still blows my mind that Trump allegedly compromised national security documents from the Central Intelligence Agency, the Department of Defense, the National Security Agency, the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency (surveillance imagery), the National Reconnaissance Office (surveillance and maps), the Department of Energy (nuclear weapons), and the Department of State and Bureau of Intelligence and Research (diplomatic intelligence).
It sounds like he was a one-man wrecking ball, aimed at our national security.
The Justice Department has asked again for a protective order to protect the classified information at the heart of this case. In their request, they explained that, among other things, Trump wanted to be able to discuss that classified information with his lawyers outside a Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility, or SCIF, a room protected against electronic surveillance and data leakage.
Former deputy assistant director of the FBI’s counterintelligence division Peter Strzok noted that there is “[n]o better demonstration of Trump’s abject lack of understanding of—and disregard for—classified info and national security. He is *asking the Court* to waive the requirements for classified info that EVERY OTHER SINGLE CLEARANCE HOLDER IN THE UNITED STATES must follow.”
The Senate today passed the $886 billion annual defense bill by a strong bipartisan margin of 86 to 11 after refusing to load it up with all the partisan measures Republican extremists added to the House bill. Now negotiators from the House and the Senate will try to hash out a compromise measure, but the bills are so far apart it is not clear they will be able to create a bipartisan compromise. The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) has passed on a bipartisan basis for more than 60 years.
The extremists in the House Republican conference continue to revolt against House speaker Kevin McCarthy’s (R-CA) deal with the administration to raise the debt ceiling. They insist the future cuts to which McCarthy agreed are not steep enough, and demand more. This has sparked fighting among House Republicans; Emine Yücel of Talking Points Memo suggests that McCarthy’s new willingness to consider impeaching President Biden might be an attempt to cut a deal with the extremists.
As the Senate is controlled by Democrats, the fight among the House Republicans threatens a much larger fight between the chambers because Democratic senators will not accept the demands of the extremist Republican representatives.
The House left for its August recess today without passing 11 of the 12 appropriations bills necessary to fund the government after September, setting up the conditions for a government shutdown this fall if they cannot pass the bills and negotiate with the Senate in the short time frame they’ve left. Far-right Republicans don’t much care, apparently. Representative Bob Good (R-VA) told reporters this week, “We should not fear a government shutdown… Most of what we do up here is bad anyway.”
Representative Katherine Clark (D-MA), the second ranking Democrat in the House, disagreed. “The Republican conference is saying they are sending us home for six weeks without funding the government? That we have one bill…out of 12 completed because extremists are holding your conference hostage, and that’s not the full story: the extremists are holding the American people hostage. We will have twelve days…when we return to fund the government, to live up to the job the American people sent us here to do. This is a reckless march to a MAGA shutdown, and for what? In pursuit of a national abortion ban? Is that what we are doing here?
“The American people see through this. They know who is fighting for them, fighting for solutions…. Your time is coming. The American people are watching. They are going to demand accountability. We should be staying here, completing these appropriations bills, stripping out the toxic, divisive, bigoted riders that have been put on these bills and get[ting] back to work for freedom and for our economy and the American family.”

Coshocton Carnegie Library
213 N. 4th St.
Coshocton, OH 43812
Coshocton’s Carnegie Library is located on the corner of 4th Street and Chestnut Street in Coshocton, Ohio.  The Coshocton Library Association started in 1872 as a subscription library. Over the years, it evolved into a free public library. The trustees of the Coshocton Free School Library solicited a grant from Andrew Carnegie, a businessman and philanthropist from Pittsburgh, in 1902. A total of 2,509 Carnegie libraries were built between 1883 and 1929, including some belonging to public and university library systems. This included 1,689 in the U.S. with others around the world. Carnegie agreed, and a lot was chosen at Chestnut and 4th Streets. This was the 1000th library to be built with Carnegie funds. Completed in 1904, it was designed by E.W. Hart of Columbus, and is constructed of granite-colored pressed brick, with a red tile roof. The main level was originally home to the book collection, while the upper floor was designed as an auditorium and the basement was used for various meeting rooms.
After an unsuccessful attempt to pass a bond issue to build a new, larger library in the 1950s, the Coshocton library eventually moved in 1973. Its current home is in an old post office building on Main Street. The city sold the old library building in 1980 after it was determined that it would not be financially feasible to renovate the structure as a new city hall.  Meanwhile, the old Carnegie building, described in Centennial History of Coshocton County by William J. Bahmer as “splendidly arranged for the purpose used,” sits vacant and unmaintained across the street from the county courthouse. Although the city has made attempts to purchase the building from the current owner, they have been unsuccessful.
However, in 2021, the City of Coshocton was looking to partner with Our Town Coshocton to breathe life into a historical building vacant for more than 50 years. Our Town is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving, revitalizing and promoting historic Coshocton County with a particular focus on Main Street and downtown.  Mayor Mark Mills detailed a tour he took of the old Carnegie Library building and had conversations with attorneys of the family who owns the building. The hope is that Our Town can take control of structure and return to it to community use through purchase or donation.  The plans are not that the city take possession of it, but ultimately Our Town receives the building and makes it a little, miniature history museum for the City of Coshocton.  Mills said such a museum could include exhibits related to specialty advertising art, mining, industrial heritage and other local history.

Jonathan Wackrow on CNN earlier this week to discuss the strongly rumored upcoming grand jury indictment and arrest of the former president.
Trump was arrested on Tuesday as part of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's probe and called for his supporters to protest. This uncorroborated arrest claim is not to be the case, with the grand jury set to reconvene next week.
Barricades were placed outside the Manhattan Criminal Court on Monday as a precaution following Trump's calls for protests. The NYPD is also preparing for how to respond if Trump were to hand himself into the authorities in response to what would be a historic indictment.
Discussing what the Secret Service's role would be in such circumstances, Wackrow said the agency wouldn't be involved in managing the surrounding area, as that would fall under NYPD and FBI jurisdiction and focus solely on protecting the former president as he enters the court.
"The Secret Service plays an interesting role," he said, seeing the Secret Service as a coordinating entity. They're the ones that usually come up with these security plans for rallies and speeches and any type of political events surrounding either sitting or former presidents."
"But in this case, they're not. They are in a protective mode. This is the administrative movement where they protect Donald Trump from point A to point B, let him do his business before the court, and leave.
"They are not playing that active role typically see them in. They're not providing the magnetometers at the courthouse providing the perimeter security that we typically see," Wackrow added.
"Now, are they working with law enforcement partners? The answer is yes to be informed are not the controlling entity looking into whether a $130,000 sum Trump allegedly arranged for his former attorney Michael Cohen to pay Daniels to keep an alleged affair the adult film star and the former president had secret ahead of the 2016 election amounted to a campaign violation.
Investigators are also examining if any records were falsified when Cohen was reimbursed for the money listed in Trump Organization records as legal fees.
Trump any wrongdoing and dismissed claims he had an affair with Daniels in 2006 and has again alluded that violence could break out should he become the first U.S. president to be arrested while attacking Bragg and his investigation.
"What kind of person can charge another person, in this case, a former President of the United States, who got more votes than any sitting President in history, and leading candidate (by far!) for the Republican Party nomination, with a Crime, when it is known by all that NO Crime has been committed, & also known that potential death & destruction in such a false charge could be catastrophic for our Country?" Trump wrote on Truth Social in the early hours of Friday morning.
In a separate Truth Social post on Thursday, Trump suggested that there could be "years of hatred, chaos, and turmoil" if he is arrested under the hush money probe.
The Manhattan District Attorney's Office has been contacted for comment via email.

Oct. 27 (UPI) -- Rep. George Santos pleaded not guilty Friday to 23 new federal charges while also facing an effort from House Republicans to oust him from office.
Santos, R-N.Y., entered the guilty plea in a federal courthouse in Central Islip, N.Y., for the arraignment on the latest charges.
A superseding indictment announced earlier this month by prosecutors charged Santos with wire fraud, making false statements, falsifying records, identity theft and access device fraud as he was accused of taking part in a credit card scheme that repeatedly charged the accounts of campaign contributors.
U.S. District Judge Joanna Seybert set a trial date for Sept. 9, 2024. A status conference is scheduled for Dec. 12.
Previously, Santos pleaded not guilty in May to more than a dozen charges, including seven counts of wire fraud, three counts of money laundering, one count of theft of public funds and two counts of making false statements to the House of Representatives.
His former campaign treasurer, Nancy Marks, however, pleaded guilty to federal charges related to a scheme using false donor names to inflate the amount of campaign money Santos reported he had collected, which ultimately helped him qualify for national party support.
Friday's proceeding comes as GOP lawmakers, led by Rep. Anthony D'Esposito, R-N.Y., on Thursday introduced a privileged resolution to force a vote to expel Santos, saying the freshman congressman was "not fit to serve" while referring to the charges against him.
The measure requires the House to take action in the next two legislative days.
The chamber disbanded Thursday afternoon and was not set to return to Washington until Wednesday.
An investigation into Santos by the House Ethics Committee was sidelined for nearly a month as Republicans grappled with internal turmoil following the ouster of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., on Oct. 3.
After Rep. Mike Johnson, R-La., was elected to fill the role on Wednesday, Republicans launched the alternative plan to remove Santos now rather than wait until the outcome of the ongoing probe.
D'Esposito informed Johnson of his plans to bring forward the privileged resolution and Rep. Nick LaLota, R-N.Y., said Johnson told them to "do what's right and do what's right for New York."
Santos responded to the resolution in a post on X, declaring, "I'm not resigning."
"I'm entitled to due process and not a predetermined outcome as some are seeking," he said.
Party members delayed the vote to oust Santos until the day after Johnson's election to give him a brief grace period to acclimate to his new role, according to LaLota who declared "we need to clean up the Santos mess for Long Island, for New York and for the House of Representatives."
Santos continues to deny any criminal wrongdoing and refuses to resign from Congress, saying he plans to run for re-election in 2024, while describing the charges against him as "a witch hunt."

Pet bird
Someone’s pet bird is coming to eat at a bird feeder in the Dyer’s Store community. If you have been missing a pet bird, email [email protected] to describe your missing pet, or call 276-734-0588. Pardon me for being this uncivil this early in the morning but, seriously, what in the FCK is this shit? From Oregon Public Broadcasting:
Federal law enforcement officers have been using unmarked vehicles to drive around downtown Portland and detain protesters since at least July 14. Personal accounts and multiple videos posted online show the officers driving up to people, detaining individuals with no explanation of why they are being arrested, and driving off. The tactic appears to be another escalation in federal force deployed on Portland city streets, as federal officials and President Donald Trump have said they plan to “quell” nightly protests outside the federal courthouse and Multnomah County Justice Center that have lasted for more than six weeks.
Federal officers have charged at least 13 people with crimes related to the protests so far, while others have been arrested and released, including Pettibone. They also left one demonstrator hospitalized with skull fractures after shooting him in the face with so-called “less lethal” munitions July 11. Officers from the U.S. Marshals Special Operations Group and Customs and Border Protection’s BORTAC, have been sent to Portland to protect federal property during the recent protests against racism and police brutality. But interviews conducted by OPB show officers are also detaining people on Portland streets who aren’t near federal property, nor is it clear that all of the people being arrested have engaged in criminal activity. Demonstrators like O’Shea and Pettibone said they think they were targeted by federal officers for simply wearing black clothing in the area of the demonstration.
LEO’s in camo? Unmarked vehicles? Disappearing people off the street without charge? Detention in something far too close to a police black site? (Ask some folks in Chicago how those work out.) I always knew I missed something not growing up in Santiago...
